I have always felt femme, but for the past year or so I have found presenting traditional femininity (specifically with clothing) to be a chore. Its just uncomfortable for me now. I want to present myself in a more butch / androgynous way, but I feel guilty (or shameful?) for the years privilege I had "looking like a straight woman". Im also afraid I will be rejected by those who knew me as femme or be seen as a "fraud" because I am in my mid 20s and just now deciding this. Any advice?

Ah this is old, but identity really is fluid and can change over time. If people think you’re a fraud, they’re silly and not worth your time.

As far as the ‘privilege’ thing goes, society hates women/woman-aligned people no matter what they look like, so why not just be as comfortable as you can with yourself? You might face some more direct misogyny and/or homophobia for it, but femmes can face very similar backlash for their brand of gender nonconformity. The fact that you used to look one way should not have any bearing on how you can look today.

Kat Blaque said smth along the lines of “you have no obligation to be the person you were yesterday.” That was one of the best pieces of advice in every aspect of my life, especially gender and sexuality.

I go back and forth on my identity all the time, and feeling shame or guilt about that really does nothing but make it harder.

It makes so much sense to me that butch & femme lesbians (especially the ones who are butch4femme/femme4butch) love Morticia and Gomez from The Addams Family.

The Addams Family is meant to show a traditional nuclear family in a funhouse mirror. Since the 1960s sitcom, Morticia and Gomez have always been a subversion of what a heterosexual couple can look like. What a wife and a husband can look like, what femininity and masculinity can look like.

Butchfemme culture subverts femininity and masculinity, gender roles and roles within relationships in similar ways. It explores what femininity and masculinity can look like when taken out of the painfully heterosexual and cisgender context the society offers us. So it's not hard to understand why butches look at Gomez kissing Morticia's hand passionately and relate to it, or why femmes see Morticia enjoying being adored and relate to that.

I don't know, just something I was thinking about the other day.
