Ok I'm making an official post for Estrials. (or well official until I make a better one)

Everything below cut so I don't make anyone scroll past the novel length (/hj) post I'm about to make when they're just trying to browse their dash :]

Alright so Estrials! They're a species I made up (though they are definitely inspired by some other things like atla cause of the elemental abilities) and they can be anthro, feral, or even like catboy esque(?) (for the lack of a better term) (an example of what I mean would be my sona)

Heres some examples of existing Estrials (in order: my sona (he/it/pup) (small child edition), evil xisuma (little creature and non little creature forms), jimmy (again little creature and non little creature forms), amd bigb (only little creature form i still need to draw his more humanoid one) gotta love bigb and his little sweater) (also ex is part voidwalker too which is why he looks so different from the others, so like yeah you go combine Estrials and another species that would be epic)

If you're still here, now I'm going to tell you how to make your own! (please do I beg I want more little creatures in the world)

Ok so, they are an open species, though there are a few rules (both like actual rules and trait rules so you stay in line with the species)

-First rule: don't be a dick. I will revoke your Estrial rights if you're not a decent person (no like actually I can't take your character but I can make a list of no good icky people so other Estrial fans know not to interact with you)

-2nd rule: have fun! No really I'm not going to be an evil overlord about people making Estrials. Just enjoy yourselves and be kind to others

-3: more of me just saying this than a rule but you can totally have more than one Estrial! Make like 50 of you want I really don't care

Now rules for like traits and stuff

-1: your Estrial has to have some sort of wings (preferably feathered ones but you can do bug or bat wings if you want) (mechanical wings are also cool! Especially if they're meant to be like a prosthetic or something that would be sick) and some sort of horns (literally any horns idc go wild) you can have any number of these traits too

-2: only one elemental ability per Estrial please (or none at all, you can make an element-less Estrial if you want) there's only one Estrial that has more than one elemental ability and he's not even really an Estrial (it's my sona, it's complicated and lore related don't ask unless you want a novel length reply full of lore)

-3: they have to be either based off of some sort of canine or some sort of feline, though you can totally add features from other things (ex: lizards or fish or deer idk) as long as the base creature that has most of the features showing (so like the main body and head I guess?) is a canine/feline you're good (so like the tail, legs, and even ears can be some other creature if you want) (i actually have one that isnt shown here that has a fish tail and some fins kinda like vaporeon. So really, go wild)

-4: any patterns and colors are ok, so yeah make that sparkle dog looking thing !! Go wild, be free my friends. Make the shadow the hedgehog Estrial (no actually you totally could)

Ok no more rules! Info time 😈😈

-Estrials can be any size that's bigger than like a small dog (so like chihuahua ish or bigger) and smaller than a horse (yippee big creature)

-The anthro and catboy(?) Estrials can be any human height btw (anthros can be a little smaller than humans too as a treat)

-They can have any length of fur (so yeah you could make a hairless one, I'd actually be real interested to see that someone do it before I do) and be from any region (hence the different fur lengths. Some of them live in real cold places and have to be real fluffy to keep warmth in, and some live in warmer places and have a lot less fur to cool off easier)

-All Estrials can hide their wings (like magic poof they're gone completely and then poof they're back now) and the catboy(?) ones can sometimes hide all their Estrial features (so like their nose, horns, ears, wings, and tails)

-I'm leaving a whole lot up to interpretation so like go wild I guess. Just don't do anything too weird.. I don't want strange things associated with my species..

Ok now the big thing: elemental abilities

So we have 5 elements + no element (though I'm kinda thinking of adding a 6th.... maybe..). Every Estrial falls under one (and only one) of these categories, though their power levels can vary (so like some fire Estrials can only do tiny poofs of flames and others can have like whole fire tornados going on)

Fire, water, air, earth, and plant

They all overlap with others a little too

-Fire Estrials can bend/control/whatever you want to call it magma, lava, fire, and lightning. They can also heat things up, which does mean they can heat other elements enough to somewhat control those (so like heating metal until it's molten and being able to shape it, or heating water enough that it turns into steam. Though steam is a lot harder for fire Estrials to control) though they lose that ability once the element cools off again

-Water Estrials can bend things like water, ice, some gasses (if the gas has a liquid state at a reasonable temperature. So like not things that require to have subzero temps to be liquids like oxygen), and any other liquids (not including molten things if you count those as liquid).

-Air Estrials can control all gasses (unless they need to be superheated to be a gas) and air. They can also definitely move things with air, so like sandstorms and using lots of wind to lift and move big objects. They can even control the weather a bit because of this (though water Estrials also kinda can. They can make it rain at least) by blowing storms around (including hurricanes and tornados, though they can also cause them too)

-Earth Estrials can control anything that's made of some sort of metal or mineral. So like glass (even if it's not molten, they can still change its shape, though they can also control molten glass) any rock, and all kinds of dirt (including compost in case you were wondering. So like if its considered dirt they can control it)

-Plant Estrials can control all plants. And can move things using plants. And can grow plants. Idk what you want from me the name is kinda self explanatory.. they can also grow plants in their fur (or hair if you have a catboy(?) Estrial) (again I don't really know what else to call them..) this does include stuff like coral, mold, and fungus btw so go wild with your biohazard mold guy (omg Ethan Winters ??? Somebody call crumb immediately) (that is a joke do not call crumb cuptoast just because I referenced Ethan Winters..) (though crumb if you somehow see this hiiii you can make an Ethan Winters Estrial, that would be so sick actually)

anyways, dsmp sona, look @ them aren’t they pretty. he joined l’manburg gathering day they officially gained independence n managed 2 escape durning the manburg era but came back 4 new l’manburg, was there all throughout l’manburg’s life. now lives on the outskirts of snowchester n get around quite a lot.

wait, did something weird happen to Ava's Demon to put it in the Homestuck category? I'm only aware that it's a webcomic. Is there tea beyond that? [eyes emoji]

Okay, so to compare avas demon to homestuck is a bit unfair i have to admit in retrospect... Avas demon never reached the heights that was homestuck. It was more the latter parts of its lifespan that rang familiar.

Unfortunetely i was never active in the fandom during the early days even though i read it so i can only scavenge for tumblr posts made long before i joined.

But basically the biggest controversy is the alledged nsfw commissions the author was making of their canonically underage characters. Which is... Ya know. This has long since been taken down and swept under the rug, take it with a grain of salt though bc i wasnt there so i cant provide a first hand account unfortunetely.

What i have been through is hiatuses lots and lots of hiatuses. This is basically what killed the old fandom bc the authors update schedule is very inconsistent and people who rarely gets updated on the situation. So the comic could update... And then promptly go on hiatus immediately after said update.

A very hilarious situation occurred where, to give people content over the hiatus a couple of other artists/writers breifly had their own hiatus arc featuring their own host-sonas (basically demon possession but not really). They were completely unrelated to the plot but the funny thing is that that thing ALSO went on an abrupt hiatus.

To put the hiatuses in perspective: avas demon began in 2012. It's almost been 10 years and we still have progressed about 1-2 days in universe. The main characters of the story are based on the seven deadly sins, we have met four of them. We dont know the other three we havent gotten to that point in the story yet. In almost ten years.

This can be blamed on frequent hiatuses and the authors dogged insistence (until very recently) to make the comic one panel format. This made the comic have the pace of a snail. A whole conversation could take MONTHS to get through, simply because a single panel (albeit very beautifully drawn) could be dedicated to like someone looking away or moving slightly, dragging out the interaction significantly.

The vibe of the latter part of homestuck video reminded me of it, just the disillusion of it all: the whole hiatus hell, patreon for like 1 panel per month, mishandled priorities aka when is the product we want actually going to come out-

There are of course newer fans and godspeed to them but almost all those who started in 2012-2013 no longer read it. I myself have slowly accepted i'm probably never going to get that spicy spicy maggie backstory. It might have been an exaggeration to call it dead dead, more like its heart have stopped and every so often the doctor remembers to use the defibrillator.

Anyways thats my tea, i hope it was informative or something in that manner. Feel free to correct me on things because again i dont know all the controversies or fandom happenings.

i like anime

i like playing music

i played clarinet in middle and high school

i recently bought an electric guitar. it’s a bit tough because i have small hands but i’m gonna do what i can.

i like video games. i LOVE video games.

the first system my dad bought for us was a sega genesis. like. specifically bought for us. mom and dad used to be gamers too so we had NES and SNES, but the sega was ours. by ours i mean me and my bro. sonic 2 was our favorite. it let us co-op.

my favorite color is blue. a lot of people think it is purple because my sona was purple. my sona was just purple because on gaiaonline, the purple hair looked better.

one time i killed a bee. i was panicked. i was scared. it was in my room and buzzing around. i smacked it with the broom several times until it was stuck crawling around on it. i hurried downstairs with it and flung it outside. i found it dead later that day. and i cried. i felt so bad. it hurt to hurt another creature. a creature that was just scared and confused. it didnt want to hurt me. and i shouldnt have hurt it. and thats why i catch and release bugs now. even if im terrified. ive since released at least three wasps from my room.

i am actually mixed, not ‘just black.’ no, i dont really have a connection to the other part, but it’s still there. my grandmother was born in thailand. i think my mother was too but i’m not sure. i dont like talking to her about her life tbh.

i have a mole on my eyelid. its a feature i like to give to my characters sometimes if i identify strongly with them.

5e Seraphine, the Starry-Eyed Songstress build (League of Legends)

I mean I’m going to have to build her eventually, right? Honestly Tasha’s Cauldron comes out tomorrow so I may as well take a bit of a cheat day and make a build for the new champ. I mean I still have to and pick out a bunch of spells so at least I’m doing that?

Samira build is going to come out sometime in the year 3587 lol.

GOALS

Lookin' for a song in everything I meet! - Seraphine is a stage performer, rallying the whole crowd into song to make it loud and proud!

You're all breathtaking! - Seraphine can unite everyone around her with shields and heals. COUGH SONA COUGH.

Sing it with me! - When the time comes Seraphine can bring the whole world closer together! Good thing she isn’t mute.

RACE

I would really love to do a funny joke and say that Seraphine is a Tiefling or an Orc or something but no: she’s a Human. I can’t even justify any of the Eberron races so we’ll just be going for good ol’ Variant Human.

As a human you can increase two ability scores of your choice: pump up your Charisma and Dexterity to keep fit and beautiful. You can also learn a skill of your choice and for hearing so strong you can hear the voices of a dying nation inside your special necklace take Perception proficiency. You can also take any language of your choice so I’d suggest one that fits with your group, or whichever one you think is Korean. Actually I think Seraphine sung in Chinese which also made people mad? Man Riot can’t stop making her controversial, huhn?

But of course the main appeal of Variant Human is the free feat at level 1. I think Alert is pretty good for mimicking super sensitive hearing. Along with a +5 bonus to initiative you can’t be surprised nor can you be snuck up on. Being able to hear everyone has its perks, huhn?

ABILITY SCORES

15; CHARISMA - If you’re gonna get the crowd to adore you you’ve gotta look the part.

14; CONSTITUTION - I don’t care if Seraphine is a squishy midlane mage we simply don’t need anything else more. Feel free to swap this out with a different stat if you want better roleplay but worse health.

13; DEXTERITY - You need to be able to keep your balance on a moving platform as well as be able to dance along with the K/DA crew.

12; WISDOM - Seraphine’s big thing is being able to hear the emotions of everyone. Knowing what makes people tick is Insight, which is a Wisdom skill.

10; INTELLIGENCE - Seraphine is just your average, everyday girl. Ditzy and a little clueless.

8; STRENGTH - Seraphine can best be described as “petite.” Muscles in the chest hurt your nice soprano.

BACKGROUND

Now you may not know this but Seraphine is a singer, which is a type of Entertainer. As an Entertainer you get proficiency in Performance (obviously) and Acrobatics as well as a music instrument of your choice (Indie Seraphine plays guitar so grab a Lute) and a Disguise Kit, so maybe you can disguise the fact that you’re a copy of So...

Being the premier superstar of Piltover means that you get to tour around a lot By Popular Demand. You can perform in exchange for a place to stay, and doing so will get people to notice you! "Music helps you keep your head up."

THE BUILD

LEVEL 1 - BARD 1

YOU MAY BE SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT SERAPHINE IS A BARD. As a Bard you get proficiency in three skills as well as three instruments! Choose whatever instruments you want (you mostly sing, and the majority of magical instruments are Lutes anyways which you’re already proficient in) (my secret advice? Pan Flutes and Horns have a few magic instruments) but for your skills take Insight to hear the crowd, Persuasion to rally the crowd, and Arcana to learn why your magic crystal is screaming.

You also get Bardic Inspiration! Seraphine talks about being inspired so she can inspire others, and you can inspire your allies with a d6 to add to Attack Rolls, Saving Throws, and Skill Checks!

But of course Bards are spellcasters with Spellcasting too! You can learn two cantrips from the Bard list: Prestidigitation will let you get some special effects on stage and Vicious Mockery doesn’t have to be mockery... It would just be a lot cooler if it was.

You also learn four spells from the Bard list: Comprehend Languages will let you understand everyone’s song, and Faerie Fire will let you light up their life. On the more unnerving end Dissonant Whispers will let folk listen to your crystal, and Detect Magic will let you tell exactly what kind of magic you’re hearing. That’s weird: why is the Hextech crystal radiating Necromancy?

LEVEL 2 - BARD 2

Second level Bards are Jack of All Trades, being able to add half their proficiency bonus to any skill check. Because you see the rhythm in everything! Additionally you get Song of Rest, helping your friends take a break and recover more health during short rests.

But most importantly you get another spell! Another way to cheer someone up is to give them a good laugh, and Tasha’s Hideous Laughter will make them do just that! Maybe they’re laughing about the fact that Riot keeps insisting your not a copy of Sona? Oh don’t worry the jabs at Seraphine as a character are just gonna keep coming.

LEVEL 3 - BARD 3

Third level Bards get Expertise in two skills: choose Insight to hear the souls of both cities, and Performance because... yeah duh. You don’t become famous in a day.

But much more importantly you get your choice of Bard College, and for the rich and fabulous the College of Glamour will make sure everyone loves you! You can now officially captivate the whole audience (up to your Charisma modifier) with your Enthralling Performance, charming them and making them idolize you and defend you on Twitter. To both shield your allies and speed them up with Surround Sound Mantle of Inspiration takes a Bonus Action to give them Temporary Hitpoints and let them take a reaction to move out of danger. Yeah this was pretty much on a silver platter for me so I figured I’d take it.

You can also learn another spell and for an effective Beat Drop take Hold Person, rooting them in place for long enough that your ADC can do their magic.

LEVEL 4 - BARD 4

4th level comes with your first Ability Score Improvement. Charisma is pretty much everything for us now so pumping that up would be helpful!

You can also learn another spell and another cantrip! For your cantrip Dancing Lights will let you light up your stage and also pulls double duty by letting your dumb human eyes see in the dark. As for leveled spells Suggestion is a more direct form of emotional manipulation, suggesting actions for the other person to take. These actions can’t be directly harmful or against what the character would normally do, but “you should buy my $30 release skin” is a fairly ordinary request, right?

LEVEL 5 - BARD 5

5th level Bards get Font of Inspiration, allowing their Bardic Inspiration to come back on a Short rest instead of a Long rest. This is great because your Bardic Inspiration die also increases to a d8, increasing your Mantle of Inspiration Temp HP too!

You can also learn third level spells but the keyword here is can because I’m actually going to stick at second to take spells like Calm Emotions. Man you’ll never guess what this spell does.

While Calm Emotions is a nice spell feel free to deviate from my builds as you see fit. Like seriously a temporary ceasefire is nice but so is a huge Fear cone.

LEVEL 6 - BARD 6

6th level Glamour Bards can make people dance like they have a magical instrument from Ionia. Mantle of Majesty lets you Concentrate on a not-spell once per Long Rest and get the ability to cast the Command actual-spell as a Bonus Action for one minute. Command lets you make one word commands at your enemy as long as they can understand you and you aren’t asking them to do something harmful to themselves. So commands like “Dance!” “Sing!” and “Cheer!” are all viable (though perhaps not effective in a teamfight.)

You can also add another spell to your spell list but again the third level Bard spells aren’t too enticing to me, so take Enthrall to make sure they concentrate on you and you alone.

Oh and you get Countercharm, letting you use an action to give allies against Frightening and Charming effects. Or they could buy some Tenacity. Or you could get a Paladin.

LEVEL 7 - BARD 7

7th level Bards get 4th level spells and Confusion will get the crowd mixed up in the noise, resulting in a cacophony that would sound like unbearable noise to most. Because it is unbearable noise. But at least your friends can fight them in the madness.

LEVEL 8 - BARD 8

8th level Bards get another Ability Score Improvement. Do you know what’s helpful for a class based entirely on Charisma? Maxed out Charisma!

You know what else is helpful? Charm Monster, so you can talk to any crystal scorpions that might be looking for their family. I mean, assuming the Brackern speak human.

LEVEL 9 - BARD 9

9th level sees your Song of Rest increase to a d8. Does this ability scale really poorly? Yeah kinda.

At least you get 5th level spells now. If you want some high notes that’ll dance around you Animate Objects will let you make a bunch of tiny objects to hit your foes! Honestly at this point all the Enchantment spells become uhhh... evil? So we have to go for a different school if we want “good” spells.

LEVEL 10 - BARD 10

10th level Bards get Expertise in two more skills: Persuasion will help you shift the hearts of a nation. Take whatever skill you want as your secondary one since it honestly doesn’t matter too much. (I personally opted for Perception.)

But more importantly it’s Magical Secrets time! This will let you get any spell from any class’ spell list and add it to your own! Most of the time when you get this feature you want to grab some stuff at the max level you can cast but I’m actually going to go down to third level for some support and buffs! For a healing aura around you take Aura of Vitality from the Paladin spell list. To quickly charm a crowd Incite Greed will force everyone to be charmed by you as they want to see your 50 dollar Brackern Corpse... I mean Hextech crystal.

Along with your two Magical Secrets you also get another cantrip. Message is always good to keep plans in team chat.

LEVEL 11 - BARD 11

11th level Bards get 6th level spells like Otto's Irresistible Dance, which forces everyone to get into the rhythm! It’s much harder to fight when you’re dancing: it’s like being stunned! Good thing only you can force a stunning dance on enemies.

LEVEL 12 - BARD 12

12th level Bards get an Ability Score Improvement but now that your Charisma is maxed you can grab Inspiring Leader to rally everyone together for an awesome performance!

LEVEL 13 - BARD 13

13th level Bards see their Song of Rest increase to a d10, and this is the point where I make a joke about Song of Rest scaling poorly.

You at least get 7th level spells, and because none of these really fit Seraphine I’m going to suggest Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion for a K/DA stage. But again I need to remind people that I’m picking options for RP and you’re welcome to build the character however you want. Take what you think will be useful and make your own song!

LEVEL 14 - BARD 14

14th level Eloquence Bards have Unbreakable Majesty! As a Bonus Action you can put on your Ultimate Skin to force enemies to make Charisma saves if they try to attack you. If they fail, they’ll target someone else! This is a great way to keep the damage off you since you don’t exactly have great HP or AC. Do remember that it only lasts for a minute though, but you can get it back at the end of a Short or Long rest.

Additionally you get two more Magical Secrets! If you want to sing to enemies far and long (but maybe not Wide) Gravity Fissure is a Dunamancy spell that forces everyone in a line to take a massive amount of damage and be pulled to the center of the spell.

Now that you got your ultimate the world is honestly your oyster. My recommendation to get a crowd to put their hands up would be Chain Lightning, but that’s more because the spell is good than because it fits Sera.

LEVEL 15 - BARD 15

15th levels get their maximum Bardic Inspiration die of a d12! This also means that your Mantle of Inspiration will now give everyone 15 temporary hitpoints! "Harmonize!"

LoL Wiki doesn’t let me link to voice lines anymore and that’s a true crime.

And hey; 8th level spells! If you want to make some Gamers™ mad about your “cash grab” Twitter account just inflict them with Feeblemind so they can spam pictures of Skarner like the marketing department gets to choose what the champion designers make. Because remember: even if Seraphine isn’t real the people pretending to be her are, so don’t be an ass please!

LEVEL 16 - BARD 16

Who likes ASIs? We haven’t used our hyper-sensitive hearing enough so take the Observant feat for a +1 to Wisdom and a +5 to passive Perception and Investigation. And the ability to pick up on lyrics by reading people’s lips!

Are there more useful feats? Yeah, but we build for character here. If you want a powerbuild check out Reddit.

LEVEL 17 - BARD 17

But you finally get access to your mythical 9th level spells! Honestly all the options are great for a girl who has everything, but I’m going to go for the fun Music Video option of True Polymorph. Turn Akali into a dragon! Turn Evelynn into a demon! Turn Skarner into a battery! The possibilities are endless! (Unlike the #BrackernRights memes.)

LEVEL 18 - BARD 18

18th level Bards get their last two Magical Secrets. This is also the last two spells you’ll be getting so better make them count! Of course the best way to make a spell count is to Wish for anything. With this you can finally unite Piltover and Zaun, as long as you believe enough! Or you can bring back Skarner’s family...

For something a little more in-character and a lot more immediately practical: Mass Heal is the perfect Catch-22 to negate any burst. A burst of 700 HP to everyone is never not useful for a bit of Redemption.

LEVEL 19 - BARD 19

19th level Bards get their last Ability Score Improvement: we have an uneven Wisdom score thanks to our last Feat so eh. May as well take Resilient Wisdom for better saving throws and even scores.

LEVEL 20 - BARD 20

20th level Bards have Superior Inspiration! When you roll initiative and have no uses of Bardic Inspiration left, you regain one use. That is literally how the ability is worded. I mean, okaaaaay? At least you can spam Mantle of Inspiration a little more?

Whole world hears me now! - You’re a full caster with no multiclassing! 9th level spells: no strings attached! You’ve even got a nice spread between Concentration spells and Non-Concentration spells, as well as both utility and combat spells.

Everyone fights to be heard; I'll fight to listen - Being a Bard means you’re good at just about everything, and particularly good at a select few things. 29 Passive Perception? +17 to Persuasion?

We've only just met and I'm already inspired - Who would’ve guessed that a Support class built to support well would be a good support? You’ve got charms, heals, and CC a plenty along with Inspiring Leader to bolster everyone before a battle and Mantle of Inspiration to keep everyone moving with the music!

CONS

Stage fright? Never heard of it - A lot of your BADDEST™ toys are locked behind big spell slots. You’ve only got two 6th level slots, and just one 9th level slot despite having three different 9th level spells to choose from. Again feel free to build your spell list however you want as I just picked what fit in character.

Pretend it's a big rehearsal - Your DEX is meh, your CON is meh. 140 HP isn’t godawful but it isn’t great when you’ll likely have 14 AC at best with Studded Leather. You know what’s really hot right now? Tattoos. See if your DM’s a cool dude who’ll pass you a Rare Barrier Tattoo from Tasha’s to essentially get Medium Armor! Elven Chain is also nice and pretty.

Joy's too quiet without sorrow on the downbeat - I don’t want to make two points related to your stats but they’re the only thing that’s really hurting in this build. Your only good stat is Charisma: and everything else ranges from meh (+2 in DEX / WIS / CON) to bad (0 in INT, -1 in STR.) While you’ll still be able to roleplay with Jack of All Trades skills your Saving Throws hurt. Your concentration is bad and anything heavy will break your petite spine in two. Luckily INT saves aren’t common but anything Strength or Constitution based will quickly put an end to your performance.

Uniting the world in song isn’t easy, but if anyone can do it it’s you. Harmonize, move with the rhythm, and unite everyone through song. There’s nothing you can’t do, and no one can bring you down down down down down down. Well, except perhaps an angry crystal scorpion monster and his army of Twitter followers.

The Cuphead ripoff scandal; or the artistic costs of imitation.

Okay, so since it’s been on my mind all week, I want to talk about the whole Enchanted Portals situation and you’re all going to have to suffer through that, you’re welcome.

Basically, if you don’t know, it’s a Cuphead... fanwork, I think is the best way to say it. It’s what happens when two people loved Cuphead so much they decided to make a game about it. Specifically, they wanted to make Cuphead about it: everything from the 30s cartoon-inspired art style, jazz soundtrack, level design, game-play, and several bosses are direct and undeniable imitations of Cuphead.

Which frankly is itself interesting, for lack of a better word, because that’s a lot of work to make the closest thing possible to an existing IP without crossing legal lines and both creators have openly cited Cuphead as inspiration. (Unsurprisingly, no other games, though, to the best of my knowledge). I can recognise the work put in, because it takes some amount of skill and definitely a lot of time to make any game.

But--because of course that was coming--I don’t think effort alone is worthy of success or praise in the absence of independent artistic vision. Just because something is hard to do doesn’t mean it justifies being done, and I think this game is a great representation of why nigh-plagiaristic imitation weakens a work. For one thing, when you imitate--especially so closely--another work, you put yourself in direct competition and comparison with that original, which in EP’s case is such a poor choice: the art, music, design, and overall flair is not anywhere near the level of polished, cohesive, or original as Cuphead, which will be reflected in critical reception.

For another thing, it is a waste of talent that could actually be strengthened by original thought. As I said, these people clearly have some skill and the capability of making a Cuphead-like game, and the greatest failure here is one of imagination in my opinion: if they had leaned into their own art style, instead of an imitation of Cuphead imitating the 1930s tradition, I think this game would be 1. entirely clear of plagiarism and 2. a better game with its own unique and memorable design.

Likewise, if they had chosen inspiration from another time-period for their soundtrack, they could have used this opportunity to showcase their original content and ability to compose interesting and, frankly, more fitting music given the “magic” setting, instead of simply being a worse version of Cuphead. Jazz is not the only frenetic, upbeat, frequently improvisational music style suitable for a bullet-hell type shooter--but it is the one that was at its height in the 1920s and is considered representational of the 20s-30s era, the same time-period from which Cuphead draws its visual aesthetic. These elements work together to create a cohesive whole, which is a key part of Cuphead’s overall concept.

EP lacks this vision. It’s transparently clear that each element of design was chosen not to improve the overall work, or help it stand apart from all others, or to further an artistic goal, but purely to be similar to Cuphead, without any real understanding of why Cuphead itself has those features in the first place. Cuphead was first imagined as a game concept in 2000, then later began work in earnest from 2010 onward. A huge amount of consideration went into the creation of the work over its developmental lifetime, which is why the quality is as high as it is.

By contrast: if we’re generous, the team behind EP spent the last two years learning how to imitate Cuphead. Not how to design their own game in the style of Cuphead. They have set out specifically to make a less polished, less considered version of Cuphead, and in that they have succeeded. But I personally don’t think that endeavour should be lauded or encouraged, because it is still a blatant ripoff. In our current media landscape, I personally feel that we should be asking for more from creators artistically, not simply asking for more of the same--especially considering the drop off in ripoff quality.

Ripoffs will always occur whenever anything garners enough attention and success and often the hallmark of ripoffs is laziness: poor quality animation, simplistic level design, and other instances where it’s clear that everything was done to the bare minimum just to get it out the door. While I’m not claiming the development of EP is lazy in execution--i.e., the art isn’t stolen, the animation is done by the team--I do feel that there is more than one way to be lazy when creating a ripoff. An absence of creative individuality in favour of imitation is itself laziness.

It’s hard for me to exactly pinpoint the core issue I have with EP’s development, the one underpinning these other issues re: creative integrity. It’s not lazy the way many ripoffs are, although laziness is evident in the goal of the project itself. However, I don’t have a problem with Pokemon ROM hacks and “original” games of that vein, and I don’t consider those to be lazy, which is where this whole situation gets hazy to figure out. I also feel that fanfiction or -sona style OC design is a legitimate and very acceptable way to engage with media you love, and some amazing creativity does stem from that space--including works that, with a little tinkering, eventually become original works in their own right.

I’ve thought about it for a bit this week and I think the crucial difference between EP and fanfiction, and EP and ROM hack, is that EP is being presented as kickstarter: it is a purchasable game, not a homage or fanwork, such as a ROM hack or fanfiction. There is a clear attempt to make money from shallow, unimaginative imitation of one of the most creatively designed and financially risky games in the current market, and frankly I hate that.

While EP claims to be doing this project out of love, I think the fundamental misunderstanding of what makes Cuphead as unique and interesting and successful as it is is something of an insult to StudioMDHR and the years of work they put into making the game. My personal feeling is that the backlash EP is receiving is entirely deserved and will hopefully encourage other game creators to resist the urge to blatantly plagiarise in favour of developing their own style and originality with the skills they have.

tl;dr: Cuphead is a highly successful game/piece of art that imitates 1920s-30s music and art scene, specifically jazz and rubber hose animation that blossomed in that era. This game is a representation of how to do imitation and homage well without sacrificing your own personal artistic vision and flair.

Enchanted Portals is a fanwork that imitates the superficial characteristics of Cuphead well, but fails to have any integrity or true originality in its design, because it isn’t trying to be a new creation: it is trying to be Cuphead, and in that attempt it utterly fails. This game is a representation of how to attempt to ride the coattails of a more skillfully and thoughtfully made game, under the guise of homage.

project 3 research

option 1: who fucking knows 1 - Switch by JJ Levine (Link) Switch is a series of 20 portraits presented in 10 sets of 2. Each set features two models in what almost look like stereotypical high school prom pictures, but upon closer examination each photo shows one figure dressed as a man and one as a woman, then switched in the second photo. This series challenges the viewer’s initial perceptions of the subjects’ gender and seeks to help separate things like clothing and makeup as a way of determining someone’s gender.

2 - THE GENDER BINARY IS... by Tazia Cira/xystugli (Link) A drawn-over photograph of a subject in heavy glitter makeup. Written on their forehead, it says “THE GENDER BINARY IS A PSEUDOSCIENTIFIC PRODUCT OF WESTERN COLONIALISM AND A MANIPULATIVE TACTIC OF CAPITALISTIC CONTROL.” This piece explores another artist’s frustration about the prevalence of the gender binary and its unnecessary importance in modern society, which is something I also plan to explore through this piece.

3 - Tired of gender? Try CONE! by Shadozu (Link) It’s impossible to say if the person who made this video is the original creator of this meme or if they’re just dubbing over it as a video, but this is a more lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek approach to these same ideas, which is a little more the angle I’m also going for. It encourages people who are tired of gender to reject society and just become a cone. It’s of course ridiculous and surrealist in the way that most memes of this type are, but underneath the irony is a very real and relatable message.

option 2: art-sona 1 - Self-Portrait With Cropped Hair by Frida Kahlo (Link) I found a lot of inspiration in the slideshow for this unit. I’ve always liked Frida Kahlo’s art and the way she uses self portraiture in such a subversive way, especially considering the time period. I really like how she made herself look especially androgynous in this painting, not just in the clothing but even some aspects of her face seem a little more ambiguously gendered. Self-portraits are rarely a fully accurate rendering of the subject; they are a medium for the artist to explore their own perception of themselves and focus on particular aspects of that perception.

2 - Untitled (”#imtheprotag”) by Junes/jununyx (Link) This is the first post that sparked an art challenge across Twitter and Tumblr that prompted artists to draw themselves as characters in their favorite fictional universes as Jedis, Pokemon trainers, D&D characters, and so much more. The idea of the challenge was to push back against people who criticized “self-insert” characters for being nothing but idle wish fulfillment and therefore bad art or writing. It’s closely related to the more general idea of “artist personas” that I based this idea around, and it’s fun to see how different artists change how they depict themselves to fit into different universes.

3 - Artist vs. Persona by Spazaan (Link) I am certainly not the first person to have this idea-- just searching the title of this piece will yield so, so many results. But I like this particular example because a) it’s two drawings, not just a drawing and a photograph, and b) it’s not self-deprecating the way so many of these comparison pieces are. I don’t want mine to be self-deprecating; both the reality and idealism are parts of me that I want to acknowledge and celebrate. So many artists take personas as an opportunity to fix what they think is wrong with them, and there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but I don’t want my work to come from a place of negativity.

option 3: mirrors 1 - The Mirror Reflecting by Claude Cahun (Link) I probably could have chosen any piece by Claude Cahun, but this one literally features a mirror. In this piece, Cahun is using the symbolism of the mirror as a reflection of internal gender identity versus external perception of gender in a very similar way to what I intend to do. There’s a defiant quality to it that I also really enjoy, as though Cahun is saying “I don’t care what you see me as, I’m still me.”

2 - The Girl In The Mirror by Norman Rockwell (Link) This is a much more traditional piece done by a more “classic” contemporary artist, but I think it touches on some similar themes. The use of mirrors is an obvious visual link, although this is a painting of a mirror whereas I will be using real mirrors to create more of an installation piece. However, notice the girl staring at herself discontentedly with a beauty magazine in her lap. This piece is a commentary on outward perceptions of gender and being forced to conform to a certain physical appereance in order to be recognized as “feminine enough” or “masculine enough”. Norman Rockwell probably wasn’t thinking about abolishing the entire notion of the gender binary when he made this piece, but it is still a commentary on how oppressive gender roles can be harmful from a very young age.

3 - Parallel Mirrors by Jeppe Hein (Link) This installation is actually a pretty good comparison for how I want to stage the mirrors in this piece, albeit on a much larger scale. I especially like the use of a “path” to the center of the piece that invites viewers to walk through this mini hallway of mirrors, watching their reflection repeat back on itself indefinitely as they traverse the piece. It has absolutely nothing to do with gender, but the idea of a piece made entirely out of mirrors still suggests more general themes of perception versus being perceived and what happens when we are directly confronted with that idea.

These were done for @wholeravioli's online zine centred around the pandemic & the feeling of being in lockdown. I kept scrapping my initial ideas until I thought of drawing my OCs in a scene together; in this case watching some feat of nature (originally shooting stars, but I changed it to aurora borealis which was totally not inspired by a certain game) in the sky, then that was the lightbulb moment and the rest was history. My work basically depicts an escape from reality!

I put in a lot more effort into the second page of my zine contribution but that was meant to be my highlight after all. I hope the lacklustre, drab first page my comic (?) is a good contrast in that sense. Overall I'm happy with what I managed to achieve within the time that I had. Of course there are things I'd want to improve on, but what's done is done & this has been my most ambitious piece to date.

I am almost an entire month late in doing this, lol, but here it finally is! It's pretty fun to put this all together and see what my focus was for each month~ Thank you all for sticking with me throughout the year and thanks to all the newcomers who've joined me in my journey of art <3 Here's to another great year of art! \o/ I have a lot planned and I'm probably too ambitious, but here we gooooooooOOOOOOOOOOO!! I'm gonna give little blurbs about each month's piece or what I remember going through each month haha, so feel free to read over my ramblings and such >w>

January -

I chose this piece because of the lighting and the expression. I really liked how the torn down wall turned out behind him and overall this is one of the best completed works of that month. It was a hard choice between this one and one with a sunset behind a female crocodile woman, but I ended up choosing this one for the color in the hair and that it was furry while the other one was a human with crocodile features. (both were not my commissions)

February -

This is probably one of the best pictures I've ever done to be honest haha. I still love the idea of it, the layout, the lighting, ALL of it. I even entered it into a scholarship contest and WON. But the best part of that contest was that it was for my university and this is KIRBY FANART xD that still kills me! haha

March -

Every time that I hang out with my friend :userVibrantEchoes: I end up drawing either Kirby or Pokemon stuff and this piece came from one of my sketches I did while hanging out with her. It was really just something I pulled out of files to work on after completing commissions in a stream but I experimented with lighting and I remember switching between two versions of my preferred art program (because a new update was released that changed nearly everything about the main tools I use) in order to get used to how the new version worked. This was a complete experimentation for all kinds of things but it turned out to be the best piece of the month (in my opinion anyway lol)

April -

Apparently April was when I started to get REALLY into Overwatch, haha. All the work I had available to choose from was Overwatch related and most of those were sketches or colored sketch style comics that I had done at the time. So I went with one of my FAVORITE colored sketch pieces where I had included a big ol' essay about Hanzo and how I adored that character and for what reasons, applying all I'd learned in my psychology classes as well as my own personal experience with depression and loss of family and difficulties with siblings to my claims. Then I tied in how McCree works really well as either a good friend or a lover for him based on their pasts. People seemed to LOVE it too! Though I honestly was expecting some sort of hate for that analysis of him but lots of people commented (this feedback is mostly on tumblr, btw) and messaged me about the analysis or left tags on their reblogs about how they were thinking similar things or that I did really well with it. I love getting feedback on anything, but the sheer amount of it for THIS post... it was amazing and totally worth it.

May -

I shipped a few different pairings from Overwatch >w> Pharmercy is also one of them~ This piece was a pun on how Mercy's line in the game says "healing stream engaged" and I put a ring on her finger and titled it "Healing stream (and healer!) engaged!" ...unfortunately no one commented on that :'c

June -

This is around the time that I started switching from drawing BnF artwork to drawing furry art almost exclusively. I had been MAJORLY involved with the BnF roleplay community there for a while and did a lot of work for people on that site between doing my own roleplays. This was done for a dear friend of mine from that site of one of his new characters. Tagging on from the Pharmercy piece in May - I had become really drawn to doing a glow effect for some reason and wanted to do some sort of magic piece. So this one came about. The character himself was a mimic octopus, hence the designs on his skin and the almost tentacle texture to his hair.

July

In July I spent a LOT of time sketching and doodling furry stuff so I didn't really have any "fully finished" things to choose from for this month. After attending Texas Furry Fiesta in March I wanted to get more involved with the furry community but I didn't know how. I downloaded Telegram and tried talking with the artists/friends I had met at the convention but nothing was really sticking with me because I barely knew anyone local. But July was when I found out about the local Texas chats and started attending furmeets and events, made friends, etc. I started making LOTS of stickers for myself of my brand new fursona design to use in the chats (after years of having two separate sonas I combined the species into one that feels like ME rather than characters). Overall it's been a fantastic experience and I've made SO MANY new friends in the local furry community, it's great. BUT! Splatoon 2 had also come out and I discovered Marina because of one of my new furry friends who was/is obsessed with Splatoon and fell in love with her design >w> so I did a little bit of fanart for her during this month~

August -

The last month before school starting up was also the last time that I drew the kemono design of Dimitri with his BnF boyfriend Onnen the elk. At this point I had fully decided that I was moving on from BnF to get more involved with the furry community and I had mostly stopped drawing Overwatch fanart all the time too. I believe my computer was broken at some point and the game had to be deleted, the drive wiped and such. I lost a lot of files that I had been working on... but I didn't re-install the game and ended up not playing anymore because school started up at the end of the month and it was my last semester so I had some pretty big classes that needed my attention more.

September -

I'm really amazed that I had next to NOTHING for this month to choose from. All I had done in September was school work, some Telegram stickers, and maybe some sketches here and there. So what I chose for this month is an example of one of my favorite stickers that I had completed during the month (for Siber) and one of my projects during that month was to use Adobe Illustrator and design a sign or logo then use the laser cutters at the school to both do etching and cutting. And I redesigned my logo from about a year before and included elements that are super important to me (bunny and dragon, since I'm a dragunny, and the star since my last name is Starr). I also created my own font for the actual letters in my username too, which got me big points in my critique in class. It totally went to my head when everyone in there was just blown away with my design of it x3 I was struttin' the rest of the day~

October -

This piece is super emotional for me. As some of you may be aware; I lost my dad a few years ago. For some reason the thought came to mind that when/if I get married I'm not going to have my dad around to dance with me during the traditional father-daughter dance and then I tried to remember if he and I had EVER done that together and I'm pretty sure we never did. Maybe when I was very very young, but I don't remember ever going to anything like a "father-daughter dance". So... this is a drawing of a moment that will never happen. Also - my dad's fursona is a lion with a "chipped" afro, by the way. He loved the character I designed for him too x3 It's just kind of hard to see that in this drawing since it's cropped and he's mostly behind my sona's head

November -

I didn't have much to choose from for this month as I was still super busy with school, but this is when I started getting back into traditional art and began making badges for people~ One of my first commissioned traditional badges was for a local fur and I really like how it came out :3c so that's the one I chose to represent this month! \o/

December -

Another piece with Siber here, haha. But this one had a bunch of elements in it that I really enjoyed doing. There's the "magic" effect with the music around him, the color scheme is super wintery, there's foreground and background elements that I think really make the picture work well, and I really just like this picture haha. I think it's a strong representation of my styles mixed together since all I'd drawn of him up until this point was stickers so I was pretty set into a certain way of drawing this character. But this turned out really well and I just really like it haha
