COMMON BIRDS OF SINGAPORE

I had this idea lingering in my mind for some time as I always wanted to showcase some of the wildlife found in my urban country. I decided to bring this idea to life after I realised Easter was around the corner and I could do something bird/egg-themed! Each adorable birb will be debuting as small prints (collage pieces) and individual water-resistant stickers for @martsuri.sg and later available on my online st0re 🌸

I had fun researching these birds, especially finding out what their eggs looked like 👀 I drew the fluffy chicken at first and then the crow, then realised the chicken didn't match the rest in terms of style since I drew the rest of birds in their adult colouration :") I didn't want to scrap the chicken, so left it as is. Those brown markings were based off red junglefowl chicks.

I have a soft spot for rock doves/pigeons and crows! They're often overlooked or get a bad rep but I love them a lot. They're just misunderstood.

I've seen most of these featured species in person before, especially spotted and zebra doves! There's also black-naped orioles I often see in my neighbourhood. As of posting this, I've yet to see any Asian koels in person despite hearing them all the time 👀 I read a theory somewhere since they're such sneaky (and lazy) parents, they prefer to hide where you can't see them but can hear them loud and clear, much to the dismay of many locals who call them 'annoying'. I even heard a man yelling "QUIET!!!" to a male koel and he actually did (keep quiet) for a while... 😔 They've also been nicknamed the 'uwu bird' after the calls that only adult male Asian koels make.

Pink-necked green pigeons (PNG pigeons as I like to call them) have made wholesome headlines in local nature news in the past few years where couples decided to nest in potted plants and outdoor areas of human homes. Despite the unusual location, those homeowners were kind and understanding enough to let the PNG pigeon families raise their young till it was time to leave.

I really enjoyed creating this series! Originally I thought of making the Asian koels wear crow hoodies as a nod to them being brood parasites but scrapped the idea as it wouldn't fit with the style. Perhaps I may do that some other time in another project!

I realised the birds in part 2 aren't as skrunkly as the birds in part 1 but I hope you still like them nonetheless ❤️ I may do a part 3 for birds, otherwise I hope to expand on other common animals in Singapore like reptiles and mammals in the future (:

Funguary '24: Silver Leaf Fungus | Lilac Seadragon

Week 1 | Week 3 | Week 4

Coincidentally we have a dragon in the year of the dragon just a few days shy of the Lunar New Year! 🐉 Based on the timing I posted this, it's also Valentine's Day ❤️

Silver leaf is actually a fungal disease caused by chondrostereum purpureum that viciously attacks the Rosaceae family that includes roses, apricots, plums, peaches and almonds. It also attacks deciduous trees like maple and hawthorn. The name is derived from the silvering of leaves on affected hosts, and the disease is often fatal. The fungus is as widespread as its hosts and can be a serious parasite to living trees.

Inspired by the properties of silver leaf disease and wanting to do something in spirit of the year of the dragon, I came up with a poisonous seadragon species. Halfway through I realised the pokemon Dragalge is basically the same concept but mine is quite a different take, I hope!

Really struggled with the rendering. I gave up multiple times and kept sighing on how to fix the shading because no matter what or how much I edited, I wasn't satisfied but I had to move on. It was fun coming up with a design and its background, though!

Each #Funguary2024 I do will be depicted as a sea creature and designed like an encyclopedia page. Funguary is a yearly drawing challenge in February hosted by artist Feefal to turn fungi prompts into characters.

Funguary '24: Penicillium | Paintbrush Flatworm

Funguary is back for another year!! This year, I'll just do 1 prompt per week, so 4 in total. Don't want to stress myself out too much and I have other projects I want to work on as well (:

Here's my take on penicillium in the form of a marine flatworm! I loved painting nudibranchs for Funguary in 2023 and wanted to try drawing other sea slugs/worms 👀

Penicillium, commonly known as mold/mould, is present in an variety of forms besides breaking down spoiled food. Penicillium is also used in cheese-making to produce cheeses like camembert, brie and roquefort, and penicillium chrysogenum is industrially used to produce the antibiotic penicillin that stops/kills certain bacteria growth! Penicillium is derived from Latin for 'painter's brush' where the chains of conidia when magnified look like a broom.

I struggled with the rendering for this one due to my inexperience painting wavy things though I stared very hard at my references, haha. Nonetheless I just did what I could so I could move on and glad I finished!

More sketchy pokehybrids as warm-up practice done in January 2024! Results were determined back in July 2023 so future me already had options to work with. Previous batch was done here!

Template: 1. Head: 2. Body: 3. Legs: 4. Tail: 5. Arms/wings: 6. Colour/pattern: 7. Bonus feature of your choice:

Process: - Suggestions either given by audience or generated by a randomiser (I used randompokemon.com) - Each suggestion matched chronologically with the #shinonhybrid template (eg. Head: Pikachu, Body: Bidoof) - Bonus suggestion is an attribute of your choice (eg. pattern, horns, tail) - If a pokemon doesn't have a certain feature, I swap it with the next suggestion that does - Some artistic liberty is taken like altered proportions - Primary type is determined by the most dominant type among all suggestions. Secondary typing may be by personal choice. Type icons from Legends Arceus, set in an alternate dimension - Name follows Paradox Pokemon naming convention - Description is a summary of what the hybrid's behaviour could be

REGAL DRAKE:

Draconid in appearance yet not a dragon, they are rare and generally shy despite their large, fearsome appearance. Its long tail acts as a rudder for steering and balance in water, though it can also be swung in defence at foes. Regal Drake is not a fast swimmer as it does not rely on speed to succeed, but intelligence and patience. It moves on land by hopping, similar to a rabbit.

Genuinely didn't expect this hybrid to turn out surprisingly cool and I quite enjoyed bringing it to life! I wondered what to name them and figured on something based on how they look like. I'd imagine their behaviour to be a bit like Lapras. Took the star-shaped patterns and translucent ends of appendages from Nihilego to give a more ethereal appearance. The colour reminds me of a prawn... Thank you, Magikarp 🤣

GEM SEEKER:

The design and colours of this reminds me of a Joseon-period royal consort. Admittedly I had issues coming up with an interesting pose especially with those blocky arms. I also pondered on what type of spirit controls its host like how Sinistea possesses an antique teacup. Seeing as this was Rock type, I thought of gems and crystals. Perhaps Gem Seeker was a prospector, wealthy merchant or noble lady in its past life?

I also figured it could also be a child spirit who just wants to collect shiny things. It probably hovers to move around in stereotypical Ghost-like fashion. Took the eyes from Brambleghast as I thought they looked cool!

STRIPED STRIKER:

Naturally aggressive, Striped Striker will attack any potential threats to defend itself until it emerges victorious or gets too beat up in the process. Its fearlessness is a double-edged sword as it often finds itself in trouble. In battle, its movements are quick and explosive, focusing on speed and power.

This hybrid was actually more difficult than I expected to figure out in anatomy and proportions. I wanted an interesting pose but at the same time needed to figure out how to draw the Roggenrola body :" ) I'd imagine its behaviour to be similar to a mix of Blaziken and Tsareena.

This will be the last of the #shinonhybrid prompts I'll be doing for now! I personally liked how Regal Drake turned out the most.

It's always interesting to see how my art has progressed through the years and within the year itself. The improvement isn't linear and neither is the content. I went from being primarily a Transformers fanartist to regressing into humans, creatures and original content.

2023 has been an intriguing year and while I didn't make as much (digital) art as I'd like, I did do a lot of life drawing and met so many cool artists at conventions and made new friends! I had a variety of styles combining my past and present. By far the most original art and concepts done in a year so far! I think I focused a lot more on self-care and doing things that make me happy after experiencing some illnesses that severely affected my mental and physical health.

Hoping to work on more studies and even more original art/concepts in 2024! I have so many ideas in my head I've yet to turn into a reality and unfinished WIPs I haven't shared 🥺

Thank you to everyone who's supported me, whether you've been around for years or are new to my journey! I'm so grateful to each one of you and THANK YOU for supporting real human artists ❤️

💙 UNDER THE SEA 💙

Had the idea for a long time of drawing all my current Ikea plushies in an underwater scene and finally did so while at work ✨ Kept it deliberately stylised and simple and I'm thinking of turning it into prints 👀

Second image is a collage I made using my own photos of the plushies featured in the artwork 🐟 Background is a photograph of the sunset sky at sea I took in December 2022 during a cruise trip 👁️ The hamster on the trio of Kosig Mus in the photo collage was my lil gremlin Storm, who passed away in April 2020. He was already an elderly ham when that photo was taken but still acted like a youngun full of energy 🔥

I got Kosig Mus as a 'rat family' a long time ago in the 2000s/pre-2010s. Mine came with all three mouse tails tied together in a knot and each mouse was sewn together by the paws so they can't be separated. I liked them a lot as a kid!

Fast forward to the present time and Blåhaj took the world by storm - I was no exception to their appeal. However, I chanced upon a small grey dolphin named Genomblot that was on sale and bought one for myself and some friends, later finding out this design had been discontinued. Afterwards I got the large Blåhaj variant and searched everywhere for the smaller ones until an outlet stocked them 👀

Blåvingad was my latest addition to my Ikea plushies and is the name given to a collection of children's products based on various sea creatures. My bed is now occupied by only sea creature plushies and I had to evict previous occupants like a large Shiba Inu plush and a cafe/butler Alpacasso I got from gacha machines 😔🙏

NAMES: 🦈Blåhaj (100cm): Finn 🦈Blåhaj (55cm): Finn Jr. 🐬 Genomblot: Wave 🐼🐬 Blåvingad (orca): Manta

Finn and Wave are shark and dolphin characters in a childhood comic I made called Dolphin Island, while Manta was inspired by the stingray-like monsters in Code Lyoko called Mantas!

❄️ Shan in Snow ❄️

This is my OC Shan, who I introduced as a cub with his mama Bai Xue in the past! ❤️

When I saw the DeviantArt Tutorial about drawing a snow leopard, I felt as though I was in a fever dream. Never did I imagine seeing a snow leopard featured like this as I feel they're still rather underrated animals.

If you've known me long enough, you would know that snow leopards are my favourite animal so of course I had to join in the event 🥺

Started out as a sketch and halfway through I decided to paint it and see how it went. Multiple references from wildlife photos and my own ref sheet used. Will probably turn this into A5 prints with a portion of sales donated to snow leopard conservation ✨

My first time drawing her! Some artistic liberties were taken because I kept staring at her official art and felt something (lips) was missing when paired with the rendering style I ended up doing.

✨ VEGA & ALTAIR ✨

Worm OCs based on stars Vega and Altair! They were made for Artfight 2023 but I thought it'd be fun to have characters inspired by astronomy (:

Fun facts: Altair can often be seen with Tarazed, a dimmer star that's also part of constellation Aquila. Although part of a different constellation, Vega isn't that far away from them and appears as a brighter white twinkling star.

Both Altair and Vega have very fast rotations, completing one full rotation on its axis in less than 10 hours, compared to our Sun that takes about 28 days 😳 They spin so fast that their gravity causes them to be slightly oblong and not a perfect sphere, unlike most stars!

I might make more astronomy-inspired characters in the future, I don't know. For now, enjoy these starry friends 🌟

#SHINONHYBRID | POKEMON HYBRIDS

A really fun challenge I enjoyed! Will probably do more in the future (:

Arranged from descending order of the latest to earliest prompts I did. Soul Crier (last image) was done using audience suggestions while the rest were randomiser suggestions.

I like the colour scheme of Glow Blades most and felt that its sheath is wooden instead of metal since it lost its Steel typing. Valiant Spikes was the most challenging to draw but the one I personally enjoyed most from the suggestions. Cosmic Prick is a pun on 'cosmic creep' and I was uncomfortable drawing it lol, it just feels creepy like some alien Elvis Presley but that was the intention. Death Glider was an interesting one as I had to figure out how to incorporate Klinklang without it looking too weird and took its second face, making it look like a 'clown''. Initially gave Jet Dancer the wand from Delphox but it looked out of place and replaced it with the ear tufts instead to push the silhouette. Soul Crier reminded me of a Gumball character which lowkey creeped me out... I always found that show to be uncanny valley hahah

Shan (山) and his mama Bai Xue (白雪) ✨❤️

Shan is a curious teenage snow leopard keen to explore the world! However, he still has much to learn from his patient mama Bai Xue. These are my OCs! Shan has three spots on his chin and flared triangle patterns above his eyes, while Bai Xue has more symmetrical triangles above her eyes and a spot below her right eye.

Did you know snow leopard cubs stay with their mothers for at least 2 years before they're ready to live on their own? It's a rugged world where snow leopards live, with rocky mountain cliffs, freezing temperatures and thick snow. Snow leopards use their long fluffy tails for balance and also a scarf to stay warm ☺️

Also available as A5 holo prints on my online store where a portion of proceeds will be donated to help with snow leopard conservation! ✨
