Funguary '24: Silver Leaf Fungus | Lilac Seadragon

Week 1 | Week 3 | Week 4

Coincidentally we have a dragon in the year of the dragon just a few days shy of the Lunar New Year! 🐉 Based on the timing I posted this, it's also Valentine's Day ❤️

Silver leaf is actually a fungal disease caused by chondrostereum purpureum that viciously attacks the Rosaceae family that includes roses, apricots, plums, peaches and almonds. It also attacks deciduous trees like maple and hawthorn. The name is derived from the silvering of leaves on affected hosts, and the disease is often fatal. The fungus is as widespread as its hosts and can be a serious parasite to living trees.

Inspired by the properties of silver leaf disease and wanting to do something in spirit of the year of the dragon, I came up with a poisonous seadragon species. Halfway through I realised the pokemon Dragalge is basically the same concept but mine is quite a different take, I hope!

Really struggled with the rendering. I gave up multiple times and kept sighing on how to fix the shading because no matter what or how much I edited, I wasn't satisfied but I had to move on. It was fun coming up with a design and its background, though!

Each #Funguary2024 I do will be depicted as a sea creature and designed like an encyclopedia page. Funguary is a yearly drawing challenge in February hosted by artist Feefal to turn fungi prompts into characters.

Art Fight 2021: the first year I really managed to do anything for it

The fact that Lex had to supplement Superman’s dna with his to create a clone is something that isn’t really as utilized design-wise as it should be. It would be infinitely funnier if Conner had Lex’s green eyes

And I don’t mean even just Lex’s already ridiculously bright lime green eyes, I mean neon highlighter pen green, a shade that shouldn’t even be possible as an eye color

It’s not even that funny in his alias bc pretty much everyone knows Superboy 1 is a clone, but in civilian identities? Priceless

Neither Clark Kent nor Lois Lane have green eyes, and I’m pretty sure green eyes aren’t even in the gene pool. Conner is basically just a carbon copy of Clark so it’s fairly obvious that he’s Clark’s “kid”

But upon closer inspection?

Anyone that looks close enough: hey Clark, why does your son have green eyes? Where did he get that from?

Funguary '24: Penicillium | Paintbrush Flatworm

Funguary is back for another year!! This year, I'll just do 1 prompt per week, so 4 in total. Don't want to stress myself out too much and I have other projects I want to work on as well (:

Here's my take on penicillium in the form of a marine flatworm! I loved painting nudibranchs for Funguary in 2023 and wanted to try drawing other sea slugs/worms 👀

Penicillium, commonly known as mold/mould, is present in an variety of forms besides breaking down spoiled food. Penicillium is also used in cheese-making to produce cheeses like camembert, brie and roquefort, and penicillium chrysogenum is industrially used to produce the antibiotic penicillin that stops/kills certain bacteria growth! Penicillium is derived from Latin for 'painter's brush' where the chains of conidia when magnified look like a broom.

I struggled with the rendering for this one due to my inexperience painting wavy things though I stared very hard at my references, haha. Nonetheless I just did what I could so I could move on and glad I finished!

TEA HAMSTERS 2023

Follow-ups to the first tea hamster that started it all, an impromptu vent doodle about chamomile tea in a time I was feeling stressed (:

Teh tarik is a common Southeast Asian drink of black tea and condensed milk, found at local eateries in Malaysia and Singapore, sometimes Indonesia and Thailand too. The name translates to 'pulled tea', so named for the method of brewing where the tea is transferred back and forth in a pulling motion between two cups (traditionally tin) to cool it, producing a distinctive foamy top when served.

I don't think there's a non-dairy substitute though as the texture and flavour of condensed milk is one of the key ingredients to giving teh tarik its thick creaminess unique from other milk teas. Best drank hot and good any time of day, though popular with local breakfast meals and supper! Consume teh tarik in moderation, though - it's not the healthiest drink out there.

Felt inspired by others' Spider-sonas and tried making my own! Design and colours based on my ACNH sona created using prompts by my friends (:

I wanted to keep this sona design similar to the original while paying homage to classic Spider-man suit designs. I've yet to design a human face (though I already have something in mind) or done an illustration of them in action but I'll do that some other time in the future 👁️

On Earth-326, Zyuna is the stage name/alias of the person behind the mask of Spider-Wolf. I'd like to think that they're a musician, probably an alt metal vocalist. Their world is futuristic with neon signs and architecture just like buildings you'd see in sci-fi films. No ideas for their tragic backstory yet (as every Spider-person has one) so I'm open to suggestions 👀

Hopefully you'll see more of them in the future! ✨

✨ VEGA & ALTAIR ✨

Worm OCs based on stars Vega and Altair! They were made for Artfight 2023 but I thought it'd be fun to have characters inspired by astronomy (:

Fun facts: Altair can often be seen with Tarazed, a dimmer star that's also part of constellation Aquila. Although part of a different constellation, Vega isn't that far away from them and appears as a brighter white twinkling star.

Both Altair and Vega have very fast rotations, completing one full rotation on its axis in less than 10 hours, compared to our Sun that takes about 28 days 😳 They spin so fast that their gravity causes them to be slightly oblong and not a perfect sphere, unlike most stars!

I might make more astronomy-inspired characters in the future, I don't know. For now, enjoy these starry friends 🌟

Shan (山) and his mama Bai Xue (白雪) ✨❤️

Shan is a curious teenage snow leopard keen to explore the world! However, he still has much to learn from his patient mama Bai Xue. These are my OCs! Shan has three spots on his chin and flared triangle patterns above his eyes, while Bai Xue has more symmetrical triangles above her eyes and a spot below her right eye.

Did you know snow leopard cubs stay with their mothers for at least 2 years before they're ready to live on their own? It's a rugged world where snow leopards live, with rocky mountain cliffs, freezing temperatures and thick snow. Snow leopards use their long fluffy tails for balance and also a scarf to stay warm ☺️

Also available as A5 holo prints on my online store where a portion of proceeds will be donated to help with snow leopard conservation! ✨

FUNGUARY 2023

Prompts I did back in February 2023 based on Feefal's Funguary challenge to turn fungi into fictional characters! I decided sea creatures would be a fun choice and genuinely enjoyed taking part in this event (:

Detailed thought processes behind each prompt on my Instagram. I ain't copy pasting all those words here because I can write a LOT.

Someone asked if this was speculative biology on a Discord server I'm in, but I don't think that term fits what I've done. They are creature designs based on living organisms on Earth - everything from scientific names, habitat, diet and behaviour are based and inspired by actual animals.

Imagine discovering a new bird species - that's what I aimed for these prompts.

Special note: I had trouble drawing rays even with picture references online, so I went to my local zoo to take photos and sketches of Giant Freshwater Stingrays. The main Emerald Ray painting was based on the photo I took in the next photo with all the fish (:

❄️ Shan in Snow ❄️

This is my OC Shan, who I introduced as a cub with his mama Bai Xue in the past! ❤️

When I saw the DeviantArt Tutorial about drawing a snow leopard, I felt as though I was in a fever dream. Never did I imagine seeing a snow leopard featured like this as I feel they're still rather underrated animals.

If you've known me long enough, you would know that snow leopards are my favourite animal so of course I had to join in the event 🥺

Started out as a sketch and halfway through I decided to paint it and see how it went. Multiple references from wildlife photos and my own ref sheet used. Will probably turn this into A5 prints with a portion of sales donated to snow leopard conservation ✨

Card illustration of my OC Cinthya in her 2.0 design for @/artofderricksong 's Character Illustration class, completed back in 27 June 2022! Originally I wanted a side view (second WIP sketch, third image) as it makes the composition more dynamic, but that meant I also had to design another character/creature she's interacting with. This illustration was also meant to be animated in After Effects later on, so I realised that a side view might not be as effective. In the end I picked the first WIP sketch which was also what my lecturer liked the most. I imagined Cinthya to be slaying snake/worm-like creatures and wanted a moonlit sky. This was supposed to be backlit but I realised that it meant the illustration was going to be in mostly ambient light and not as appealing, so I changed the key light from the moon to a more side angle. I also thought of debris from buildings like pillars in the background but changed it to pointed rocks to emphasise the dynamism of the composition. The creatures were meant to be have metallic rings around their bodies (as I imagined them as sentient cables or robotic beings) and sliced apart with 'blood' spilling out, but I didn't manage to do that.

💙 UNDER THE SEA 💙

Had the idea for a long time of drawing all my current Ikea plushies in an underwater scene and finally did so while at work ✨ Kept it deliberately stylised and simple and I'm thinking of turning it into prints 👀

Second image is a collage I made using my own photos of the plushies featured in the artwork 🐟 Background is a photograph of the sunset sky at sea I took in December 2022 during a cruise trip 👁️ The hamster on the trio of Kosig Mus in the photo collage was my lil gremlin Storm, who passed away in April 2020. He was already an elderly ham when that photo was taken but still acted like a youngun full of energy 🔥

I got Kosig Mus as a 'rat family' a long time ago in the 2000s/pre-2010s. Mine came with all three mouse tails tied together in a knot and each mouse was sewn together by the paws so they can't be separated. I liked them a lot as a kid!

Fast forward to the present time and Blåhaj took the world by storm - I was no exception to their appeal. However, I chanced upon a small grey dolphin named Genomblot that was on sale and bought one for myself and some friends, later finding out this design had been discontinued. Afterwards I got the large Blåhaj variant and searched everywhere for the smaller ones until an outlet stocked them 👀

Blåvingad was my latest addition to my Ikea plushies and is the name given to a collection of children's products based on various sea creatures. My bed is now occupied by only sea creature plushies and I had to evict previous occupants like a large Shiba Inu plush and a cafe/butler Alpacasso I got from gacha machines 😔🙏

NAMES: 🦈Blåhaj (100cm): Finn 🦈Blåhaj (55cm): Finn Jr. 🐬 Genomblot: Wave 🐼🐬 Blåvingad (orca): Manta

Finn and Wave are shark and dolphin characters in a childhood comic I made called Dolphin Island, while Manta was inspired by the stingray-like monsters in Code Lyoko called Mantas!

I love Rika so much 😩 Love her design and personality! I want to steal her gender sksnsn I desire to achieve a level of androgyny she does 🙏🙏🙏

My first time drawing her! Some artistic liberties were taken because I kept staring at her official art and felt something (lips) was missing when paired with the rendering style I ended up doing.

A really fun challenge I enjoyed! Will probably do more in the future (:

Arranged from descending order of the latest to earliest prompts I did. Soul Crier (last image) was done using audience suggestions while the rest were randomiser suggestions.

I like the colour scheme of Glow Blades most and felt that its sheath is wooden instead of metal since it lost its Steel typing. Valiant Spikes was the most challenging to draw but the one I personally enjoyed most from the suggestions. Cosmic Prick is a pun on 'cosmic creep' and I was uncomfortable drawing it lol, it just feels creepy like some alien Elvis Presley but that was the intention. Death Glider was an interesting one as I had to figure out how to incorporate Klinklang without it looking too weird and took its second face, making it look like a 'clown''. Initially gave Jet Dancer the wand from Delphox but it looked out of place and replaced it with the ear tufts instead to push the silhouette. Soul Crier reminded me of a Gumball character which lowkey creeped me out... I always found that show to be uncanny valley hahah

Process: - Suggestions either given by audience or generated by a randomiser (I used randompokemon.com) - Each suggestion matched chronologically with the #shinonhybrid template (eg. First suggestion is Pikachu for Head, second suggestion is Bidoof for Body) - Bonus suggestion is an attribute of your choice (eg. pattern, horns, tail) - If a pokemon doesn't have a certain feature, I swap it with the next suggestion that does (eg. Trapinch lands on Tail, but Trapinch doesn't have a tail) - Some artistic liberty is taken like altered proportions so the hybrid isn't a literal copy+paste of body parts - Primary type is determined by the most dominant type among all suggestions. Secondary typing may be by personal choice. Type icons from Legends Arceus, set in an alternate dimension - Name follows the Paradox Pokemon naming convention - Description is a brief summary of what I think the hybrid's behaviour can be based on appearance & attributes of origin pokemon
