And that's a wrap for the first week of Funguary 2024 - the Celestial Fungi.
I usually overwork a lot of what I do (see my Kelpie picture) and have a deep and lingering terror of working quickly and then having to put an image down. So in my mind most of these are sketches rather than anything else. But I'm trying to let go of the need to be perfect, and accept the idea that art is still valuable even if it's not what I thought I'd get to.
The celestial themed fungi represented here are:
Mycena Subcyanocephala
Lilac Coral Fungus
Turkey Tail
Cystolepiota
Filoboletus Manipularis
Angel Wings
Penicillium

Funguary week 1 entry : Penicillin
(View of Penicillium under a microscope, for reference)
I am sooo happy to participate in my first "monthly" drawing challence, which is Funguary, created by the incredible @feefal !! 💕 I'm doing the chill version with just one drawing a week (thanks for encouraging that btw TvT) 😌
The inspo for this one was the microscopic appearance of Penicillium notatum, the species that led to the discovery of penicillin 🔬
Since I work in healthcare, this prompt really inspired me, and reminded me of my student days !! 😸
(PSA : Please only take antibiotics for bacterial infections, and exactly as prescribed ! 🙏)

Funguary '24: Penicillium | Paintbrush Flatworm
Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4
Funguary is back for another year!! This year, I'll just do 1 prompt per week, so 4 in total. Don't want to stress myself out too much and I have other projects I want to work on as well (:
Here's my take on penicillium in the form of a marine flatworm! I loved painting nudibranchs for Funguary in 2023 and wanted to try drawing other sea slugs/worms 👀
Penicillium, commonly known as mold/mould, is present in an variety of forms besides breaking down spoiled food. Penicillium is also used in cheese-making to produce cheeses like camembert, brie and roquefort, and penicillium chrysogenum is industrially used to produce the antibiotic penicillin that stops/kills certain bacteria growth! Penicillium is derived from Latin for 'painter's brush' where the chains of conidia when magnified look like a broom.
I struggled with the rendering for this one due to my inexperience painting wavy things though I stared very hard at my references, haha. Nonetheless I just did what I could so I could move on and glad I finished!
Each #Funguary2024 I do will be depicted as a sea creature and designed like an encyclopedia page. Funguary is a yearly drawing challenge in February hosted by artist Feefal to turn fungi prompts into characters.

🍄 Funguary 7: Penicillium
Be careful! They produce spores that are as toxic as they can be medicinal. They come in several colours.

The conidiophore of a Penicillium fungus. Referenced from Radical Mycology by Peter McCoy (pg. 7).
I've been really inspired by botanical illustration lately. I found a digitized copy of Fungi and How to Know Them (1909) by E. W. Swanton on archive.org and while the info is obviously very outdated, its been interesting to see how it contrasts with the modern texts I've read.
And I've been blessed with quotes such as, "The fungi comprise a group of plants second to none in their capacity for evil." First line of the preface. cx
But what I've been most captivated by are the gorgeous plates by a miss M. K. Spittal. I just had to try this style for myself. I know nothing about inking techniques but I'm definitely gonna be looking into it because this was so much fun!

Will you pray to the decaying god?
I really want to take part in in feefal’s Funguary but I only have time for 1 a week so obviously I had to do mold!

Wish my metallic markers picked up better in photos, but I had a lot of fun with this.

shout out of the penicillium mold that is the basis of making penicillin, i was hoping it would make an appearance especially in the last of us. cool fungi fact! did you know penicillin is made from a fungus that grows on spoiled food that is fermented in a specific way and then separated from the mold and purified for medical use? the more you know!
