Fandometrics In Depth: Black Panther
This post is entirely spoiler-free for those who have yet to see Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
It’s been an eventful five years since the original Black Panther film was released and the titular character introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a fandom, we’ve experienced wins and losses. We got to witness history in the making and incredible representation. We watched as our heroes triumphed against Thanos and saved the universe time and time again. But we also lost a hero along the way. Midway through 2020, the world said a tragic goodbye to Chadwick Boseman, who brought T’Challa to life for the first time on the big screen, and whose memory and legacy will live on forever. In the series’ latest iteration, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, art mimics life as the nation of Wakanda struggles to find its place in the world following the passing of its king. This new chapter brings with it a myriad of old friends and new faces, a foe unlike any we’ve seen before, and a whole new civilization that lies deep beneath the ocean.
For this impromptu trip under the sea (see what we did there?), we analyzed engagement data—that’s searches, original posts, reblogs, and likes—around tags used in the last year, starting on November 2nd, 2021, right up until when this post was written to paint you the most detailed picture possible. Let’s break down the Black Panther fandom in depth:
Tumblr media
A nation united.
The cast and crew for the Black Panther films are hands-down some of the most incredible in the business, so naturally, this next ranking is filled with talent that goes above and beyond. Sure, the list is based purely off of conversation on Tumblr, but we personally believe they all deserve to be number one. Check out the full breakdown below:
Lupita Nyong'o | 36.17%
Angela Bassett | 16.61%
Chadwick Boseman | 15.02%
Danai Gurira | 7.92%
Tenoch Huerta | 7.39%
Letitia Wright | 5.98%
Winston Duke | 4.29%
Michaela Coel | 3.83%
Ryan Coogler | 1.96%
Dominique Thorne | 0.83%
Tumblr media
A world divided.
With every new entry into the MCU, Marvel strengthens fans’ relationships with their favorite heroes and brings to life new faces we’ve only seen on comic book pages. This time around, we’re introduced to Namor, who rules the underwater city of Talocan. Fans are so excited to see Mesoamerican culture featured so prominently in one of the most anticipated films of the year. Below are the most popular characters in Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, ranked:
Namor | 20.93%
T'Challa | 19.81%
Shuri | 19.00%
Okoye | 10.25%
Riri Williams | 9.27%
Nakia | 9.26%
Everett Ross | 4.15%
M'Baku | 3.67%
Queen Ramonda | 2.07%
Aneka | 1.60%
Tumblr media
Wakanda Forever.
Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is out in theaters now—if you’ve already seen it, we’re betting you want even more, and if you haven’t, we’ve got just the content to get you hyped up.

Indie Game Spotlight: The Wayhaven Chronicles (@seraphinitegames)
This week’s Indie Game Spotlight has graced our Fandometrics list for the past few weeks. The Wayhaven Chronicles is a supernatural interactive fiction series with a focus on romance, characters, and narrative. Your choices help shape the world, those characters, and the story, as well as the romance you choose to pursue. The game is made to be something people can escape to, fall in love with, and immerse themselves in completely.
We spoke with Mishka Jenkins, creator, writer, and coder of the game. “It’s just me at Seraphinite Games, but I have great support from many people, including one of my closest friends and editor, Heather, my wonderful readers/testers, and the team at Hosted Games!”
What's the difference between Book One and Book Two (without spoilers!)?
Book One was very much the introductory book, kind of like the pilot of a TV show. Book Two starts delving into the intensity of the story and setting up the many paths the main character may take based on what they choose to pursue. It also starts to get more in-depth with the romances, which is not only my favorite part but seems to be many others’ too!
How does The Wayhaven Chronicles balance writing and game mechanics?
Interactive fiction allows for a great deal of balance between writing and game mechanics. The Wayhaven Chronicles is not a stat-based game. I wanted to move away from ‘point watching,’ where you play a game and try to reach a certain number of points with other characters or in certain stats. That’s not a mechanic that suits my play style, and it never truly lets me immerse myself in a story.
That’s why I made Wayhaven much more choice-based. The story is reactionary, based on the players’ actual choices, whether that is immediate or triggers something much later into the series. This allows me to add a much greater depth of narrative variation, which is personal to the player, rather than just changing or triggering due to points.
Tumblr media
How does character creation work?
Character creation offers a wide variety of choices, from base options such as gender, sexuality, and appearance, to more fun options like apartment-style and clothing choice, to those deeper options such as your relationship status with different characters, your character’s background and opinion on many topics in-game.
In Wayhaven, these choices aren’t just all sprung at you at the beginning of the game in a character creation screen. They come up naturally during the narrative so you can enjoy fleshing out your character as they grow within the game.
New choices will come with each book in the series, to mimic the way people always change and grow with new experiences, which the main character will get plenty of.
If you could have any pop culture detective character make a special appearance in the game, who would it be?
My first reaction was Sherlock from the BBC series, but how well Sherlock would fit in with Unit Bravo—the team of vampires your human character is part of—has me chuckling. Some of the vampires of Unit Bravo don’t play well with others!
Tumblr media
Are there any specific pieces of fan art on Tumblr that have been your favorite?
I adore all of the fan creations, and it would be a serious struggle to pick only a few. I could get lost all day, just looking at the incredible creations under the Wayhaven Chronicles tag on Tumblr…and I’ll admit, I totally have! Not only the fan art but the memes and comments too…they’re all fantastic and keep me smiling for hours!
You can get the newest release, The Wayhaven Chronicles: Book Two, from Hosted Games’ website, Steam, Google Play, the iPhone App Store, and Amazon. (You can find Book One in these places, too.) Want to jump into the community? Ask questions and get the behind-the-scenes look on their Tumblr here!

Ooh, does this mean Lapis is coming back?
Tumblr media
Okay. Close enough for now.
Tumblr media
“I know it’ll hurt your businesses. I know it’ll hurt your lives. But are we really going to hurt each other?”
Well, that got particularly relevant.
Tumblr media
Another Sonic-style spin dash.
(Pretty sure I saw all or most of the Ruby/Sapphire fusion scene and Garnet’s song back around the time this episode first aired. It’s better with context.)
Tumblr media
Awww, don’t leave Lapis. I mean, I’m pretty sure she’s in more of the show than this, but still.
Tumblr media
Yeah! Fuck her up, Lapis!
And I definitely know that Jasper’s in more than this. I remember a gifset with her facedown and falling either off a cliff or into crumbling ground or something like that. People on the post were trying to decide if they could tell whether her gem was damaged or not. I follow Lucahjin and she loves Jasper so it was probably something she reblogged back when she was still active on this site. (And again, I noticed Jasper’s name trending on Fandometrics just the other day so I know she’ll be around later.) I guess I’ll just have to wait and see how this unstable relationship breaks up and where things go from there. I’m not particularly attached to Peridot or Jasper as of yet, but I’m very interested in learning more about Lapis.
So, that’s one season down. It’s a fun and engaging show. A lot of stuff still feels very surface level, but I assume that it will continue gaining depth as the show goes on. Lapis and Connie are the ones I’ve come closest to feeling emotionally invested in and they don’t seem to be full-time regulars so much as recurring guests, but even when they’re not there it’s still a fun show. I’m having a good time and I hope to see the show explore more of the mythos and history as it goes on.

It was the Fandometrics in depth and it was the weekend s2 came out. Steve was the most popular character. Mileven was the most popular couple and Jancy was next. Even Byeler featured but I felt it ranked a little low though. But it was based on percentages of new posts. Jancy hate might get a hundred notes but pro Jancy posts could get over a thousand
And there’s hate posts about Nancy with thousands of notes too.

So I see a lot of people taking pleasure in like. Gagging over hetero romance in fiction. And overall, there seems to be displeasure over the majority of heterosexual romances, and y'all like to claim it's because it's heterosexual, but no. It's cuz it's bad. (And if y'all really are just gagging over anything hetero, even if it's good, and you're beyond accepting any kind of other truth, then bye bye this post ain't for you.)
Romance in media very rarely is done the way it should be. When it is, it's extremely popular, and I believe that's why shipping has become as common it is now; because when people get the taste of an actually interesting chemistry between characters they really want to cling to it.
The majority of romance in fiction is hetero, and the majority of romance in fiction is boring, one dimensional, and filled with over-done tropes that are often just pulled off terribly. (With the exception of classics, who in my mind did the kinda shit that movies have done a thousand times over, first, so it somehow doesn't have that same effect.) If romance were given more time and interest, with good intentions, we wouldn't have to deal with shit romance movies like 50 shades of bdsm "bc ppl are into kinky shit so here's ur quality modern romance ta daaa". That's not to say that there's not uncountable versions of romance. To be true, everyone has their own preferred way. The problem isn't that romance writers are only catering to certain people, it's that they're being lazy.
But not everyone is lazy.
Romance can be simple, yet have more than one dimension. You don't have to throw them into the apocalypse to give them some interesting chemistry. (Tbh that kinda hunger games world romance always has the same feel and its so unfulfilling)
There's well done romance in the oddest places. And I'm just gonna talk about one for right now.
Once Upon a Time was far from a masterpiece. It was extremely repetitive, and frustrating(even Regina's once extremely entertaining arc became tiresome and repetitive). However, there was a romance in that show, that I saw even the most picky fans show appreciation for.
Emma Swan and Killian Jones had, arguably, the most popular romance in the entire show, with their ship "captainswan" making it to fandometrics lists several times. (If you don't like it, chill I'm not here to try to convert u.)
It was popular, because it was incredibly interesting. Even though they subjected viewers to quite a bit of teasing, that was okay, because they made an effort to get us to have faith in them. Regardless of how long it took for them to truly get together, every moment prior to it, every long look or kiss, felt so honest and genuine.
They took the character captain hook, who, in this version, one would figure for a lady's man who sleeps around, gave him depth, and made him fall head over heels for Emma, not simply because she was pretty or acted cute. He fell for her out of immense respect. He was amazed at her strength and selflessness, when he saw himself in her. (Here this woman and he had so much in common, and yet she was willing to risk everything to save the town. That struck a chord with him.) I won't get into anymore details, but you get the gist.
Heterosexual romance isn't the problem; it's years of poorly done romance.

Checking out the fandometrics' 2013-16 ships, I'm surprised sterek didn't top the 2013 list. I'm left wondering which year was the peak of sterek shipping, and I'm guessing now 2012 (thefandometrics tumblr com / post/162441496429/fandometrics-in-depth-shipping)
thefandometrics.tumblr.com / post/162441496429/fandometrics-in-depth-shipping
I know they had to start hiding the tag pretty quickly so the results are always a little off.

Fandometrics In Depth: Loki
The God of Mischief may be full of tricks, but this post sure isn’t. Read on for some spoiler-free facts and data about Tumblr’s favorite son of Odin and Frigga, and his solo entry in the MCU.
After 10 years and six appearances in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, it’s finally Loki’s time to shine and, maybe, finally get that redemption arc we’ve all been dreaming of. Disney+’s latest addition to their roster of Marvel-centric TV shows is centered around Loki in the events following his brief appearance in Avengers: Endgame. We won’t share too much, but we’re introduced to an entire new cast of characters, including the mysterious and devout agents of the Time Variance Authority, and Loki is forced to reconcile with himself more than once.
This time around, we analyzed engagement data around tags used between the first Loki trailer’s drop on December 10, 2020, and the latest episode of the show (as of writing this post), which aired on July 7, 2021, to calculate its most talked about characters, actors and actresses, and ships.
Tumblr media
Those who have strayed from the Sacred Timeline
While many of these characters still remain a mystery, it hasn’t stopped you from loving them immensely and talking about them constantly. Because the MCU still hasn’t changed its habit of naming films and TV shows after the main character, we’re using a strict real name policy for this list. Below are the most tagged characters in Loki, ranked:
Loki Laufeyson | 50.14%
Mobius M. Mobius | 23.82%
Sylvie | 13.4%
Kid Loki | 3.37%
Classic Loki | 2.6%
Alligator Loki | 2.6%
President Loki | 1.92%
Ravonna Renslayer | 0.81%
Boastful Loki | 0.7%
Hunter B-15 | 0.64%
Tumblr media
The ones causing chaos behind the scenes
In a twist of fate that surprises exactly no one, Tom Hiddleston remains Tumblr’s favorite member of TH Squared (in this timeline, at least), and tops our list of the most talked about actors in Loki. A few actors also made their MCU debut in the latest Marvel TV entry and quickly rose in the ranks of your hearts. Check out the full breakdown below:
Tom Hiddleston | 76.74%
Owen Wilson | 15.5%
Sophia Di Martino | 5.35%
Wunmi Mosaku | 1.23%
Richard E. Grant | 1.18%
Tumblr media
Ships passing in the endless void of space
This cast may be small, but their love for each other is infinite. Below are the top three ships from Loki, ranked:
Lokius (Loki Laufeyson x Mobius M. Mobius) | 88.45%
Sylki (Loki Laufeyson x Sylvie) | 10.74%
Sylkius (Loki Laufeyson x Sylvie x Mobius M. Mobius) | 0.81%
Tumblr media
For all time. Always.
Loki may have been the shortest Disney+ Marvel TV show thus far, but now that the season’s over, we’ve got some blogs to keep the momentum going. Beware, they do contain some spoilers:
Daily Loki (@dailyloki) compiles the best Loki-related memes, GIF sets, and fanart Tumblr has to offer, all in one convenient blog
RJ Pierce (@lousysharkbutt) draws fanart of your favorite puny god and his MCU buddies
Lego Loki (@lego-loki) for Lego reenactments of iconic Marvel moments
Follow the #Loki tag for GIFs, fanart, memes, and more! Don’t forget you can filter any tag from your dashboard for a spoiler-free experience. If you need a reminder for how to do that, check out this handy Tips page.

That last name seems familiar. In my town there is a small comic con going on. And one of the panels is "in depth with tumblr" hosted by amanda Brennan. Interesting. Fandometrics.
