As a queer drawn to the faith and trying to deal with the messiness of entering into everything, I've been trying hard to read more of the Book of Mormon because I only have a very vague understanding of it's Whole Deal, but executive dysfunction, ADHD, and honestly, a million other excuses are making it very difficult. Are there any good resources for walking through the fundamentals? Childish but I feel like I'm disappointing the Lord if I'm not more on top of this.

Hi anon! I totally get it and yes, I can think of a few ideas!

If you're looking for ways to understand the BoM (or even just general doctrine) from more of a bird's eye view:

I hope you don't find this silly, but when I was a kid, the church published an illustrated children's version of the BoM that's obviously way quicker to flip through. It might be harder for you to find those exact editions I read as a kid if you don't have ready access to a church library, BUT I found this!! It's (almost) the ENTIRE BoM illustrated and summarized and it's online!

Looks like they put out videos too that summarize the BoM beginning to end. Here's a link to the video series. I haven't seen these, so I can't vouch for them, but they might be helpful! Similarly, there's a BoM in 60 seconds video you might find helpful.

If you'd benefit from a schedule, the church is currently studying the BoM in sunday school! The past few years, we've been using a study guide called Come Follow Me with weekly assigned reading chapters. I've actually been working on posts about CFM as they relate to queer mormon theology, but I haven't had much posted yet since I've been having a rocky start to 2024. As things improve, I'll be able to hopefully even establish a schedule on this blog!

I'm not sure if missionary lessons is something you're interested in at this point, and it's definitely not something you ever need to do, but the missionary lessons themselves are a pretty good doctrine intro if you're looking for just Mormonism 101 in a digestible way. The missionaries teach out a book called Preach My Gospel, which is available right here. You'll be interested in the lessons, which are found in Chapter 3. If you just scroll down, you'll see some of the links are labeled Lesson instead of Chapter--just click on those bad boys. And if you have any doctrinal questions, I'm always MORE than happy to talk about the church! You'll probably get a faster answer DMing me personally at @logans-mormon-blog, but I'll always answer asks here as soon as time permits.

If you're looking for easier ways to finish the BoM from beginning to end:

The BoM on tape. The church has an audiobook version available on the Gospel Library app and other audio apps like Spotify.

The Reader's Edition. If you can get your hand on a reader's edition, a lot of people find this is an easier way to plow through the BoM. What's special about this one is that it's formatted not like scripture but like prose, and it really does change the reading experience!

I don't know if this helps any, but I struggle with some of the same issues as you and I'm always bitterly disappointed when I'm not able to move mountains. If I had my way, I'd be the most well-read scriptorian of all time and this blog would be updated constantly. But life often doesn't shake out that way. I spend way more time than I want to with my brain entirely burned out of my head. So you're not alone, if that's any comfort. I think God gets it--he made our brains, after all, and knows how hard it is to wrestle with. It's easier said than done, but don't beat yourself up. God loves the both of us and he's the most perfectly patient person who's ever lived. He's not frustrated or disappointed with our efforts. Religion exists, in my opinion, to help improve and enrich our lives, not make them more challenging OR even to make them perfect if we only could just run fast enough. I too wish I could be more diligent and on it, but shit happens, right? And we're not on earth to be perfect, we're here to be happy and to learn. When Joseph Smith was translating the BoM, God told him "Do not run faster or labor more than you have strength and means provided to enable you to translate; but be diligent unto the end." D&C 10:4. We're doing our damndest, and that's all God even wants from us.

looking at the explosion in bad-faith rumor-spreading that has occurred on the r/YoutubeDrama subreddit since Hbomberguy's video came out and... I don't think Harris did anything wrong in making the video he did, and I know his intentions were good and that he took steps to ensure he wouldn't have a financial interest in mining drama for views in the rest of his career...but... it feels like this video has unleashed a whole new wave of weird quasi cancellation attempts on Youtubers coming from the left and that ultimately we will all look back on this era as a mistake. The rest of Youtube was already a cesspit of rumors and drama and infighting, and the left sure had its dalliances with that too (sarah z and lindsey ellis shitting on quinton very publicly, folding ideas following up on that quite pettily, just a lot of weird cliquish shit), but now people are going to view making smear videos about other creators as an acceptable tactic on leftist youtube, and a lot of people a lot less conscientious and controlled than hbomb are going to take that to some terrrrrible places.

really the entire youtube leftist influencer with a whole stable of hired editorial staff model is completely incompatible with any kind of genuine leftism. it's all too highly dependent upon advertiser revenue, sponsorship deals, and individual patronage based on a viewer's emotional attachment to an individual figure as a "brand". i love a lot of youtuber's stuff, i watch youtube way more than i do movies or tv, but it's just entertainment at the end of the day. it's a profit generating venture for most of these people and they behave accordingly -- self-aggrandizing, careerist, petty shit without any sense of praxis. feels like every day we are being led farther and farther from any kind of ability to organize collectively because even our means of learning about leftist ideas are so rooted in a individual cult of personality that empowers and enriches the personality the more they train us to be reliant up on them.

and again none of this is a knock on harris, who i think is one of the most careful about this stuff and i dont think would even present himself as a leftist these days, most of his videos aren't about such subjects at all. it's about the overall culture of how people relate to these things and the incentives that drive the people that make them. it sucks.

This is part of a longer post that I've been composing in my head for months, but I've been watching a lot of anti-multilevel marketing (MLM) videos and it had started making me think about how, just like my mom has used religion to cope with her (previously undiagnosed) ptsd, she used MLMs also.

She sold Tupperware and got the Sea World convention trip. She sold Mary Kay and got the car. She sold other things I can't remember-- vitamin stuff, and was super into it.

And the way some people break down the MLMs in the videos I'm watching, really made me think about how that structure of having to constantly recruit new people is so much like evangelism in general, but particularly Jehovah's Witnesses. They are constantly trying to recruit you -- not just to save you, or teach you something they say will enrich your life, but because they have to make their quotas!

And now I'm watching these ex-JW vids, from Elders who have left the Jehovah's Witnesses, and it's bringing up a lot of memories, but also I'm getting even more of a peek behind the curtain of what goes on in the upper levels... it really is set up like an MLM corporation.

And if you're good at making those quotas, you'll probably thrive. My mom was always good at making her quotas -- both in MLM sales AND her monthly field service (proselytizing) hours. All aspects considered, she was a "better" JW than my father. She was always a joy to the congregation and everyone wanted her involved in things, she sewed the dresses for so many weddings, she sang out in meetings, and she was a zealous Pioneer who always made her quotas and brought new people in. She learned ASL to minister to one person in her territory, and ASL became a passion that led to her going to college once she was out of the JWs.

It's kinda hilarious to me that they lost a truly devoted JW when they disfellowshipped her because she wanted a divorce. 👀 (She had to break a religious law for her divorce to be recognized by the congregation, because dad being abusive wasn't enough-- because of their "two witness" rule about proving guilt. So she had an affair with a coworker, and let people find out about it, and then refused reconciliation in the prescribed Elder marriage counseling.)

When someone is disfellowshipped, they are fully shunned. Baptized people and full members of the congregation aren't allowed to speak to them or even acknowledge them. But my mom at first wanted to earn her way back in!! For which, she needed to stay devout and keep going to meetings, even though she wasn't allowed to sing or do service anymore or talk to any of her friends. And every 6 months or so, she could write a letter to the Elders and the Organization about why she should be reinstated. I overheard these things laid out to her when I snuck downstairs to listen in on their counsel. It was such a scary feeling, compared to the excitement of weeks earlier when my brother and I sat in my room listening to my parents fight about her affair, both of us crossing our fingers and whispering, "Please get a divorce."

Idk if this is where I lost my faith exactly, because even though I was raised in it I had ALWAYS questioned things that didn't make sense and got in trouble for it. But I also DID believe in the religion still-- I was 9/10 and didn't yet realize how that religion had actually been CREATED by men just the same way as Mormonism and all the other sects JWs decry. I just really started labeling them all as hypocrites at that point. The way everyone abandoned my mom, and acted like my dad was so betrayed and perfect; the way they TALKED about my mom and compared me to her all the time to keep my behavior in line. The way they would still talk to me, but not my mom. When she was right there.

...I intended this to just be short and get my thoughts out but I just kept going. Lol I'm stopping here.

My faith based opinions that would have be arrested by chronically online christian bloggers are that you can be feminist and be a christian, that Christ wanted women to follow him and women have always worked outside of the home and it wasn’t unbiblical. That being a pro life feminist means that we ensure the safety of women and children. That also, if your “godly” husband thinks that you dying in childbirth or from any complications in your pregnancy is something he is ok with - you need to leave him. He is demonically possessed. Demonic possession isn’t always like in the movies, you have to listen and trust god when he is guiding you and telling you to be safe ie, our gift of fear. Also christian women need to stop consuming the content from this new wave of neo trad girls when all do is say they’re anti feminists and have a mostly male audience. It’s not spiritually enriching or productive. Our faith is not a trend. It used to be edgy “anti sjw atheists” making this content, now it’s “new age traditional conservatives” using our faith as an aesthetic. It’s false and it will change again to something else.

I think I’m just talking from experience because my little sister is consuming this type of content. She changed from the ‘anti feminist anti sjw atheist’ to a ‘crystal healing reiki student using astrology and essential oils for any injury’ to finally, the ‘anti women’s rights trad wife’ despite not even having a boyfriend. I’m engaged but I’ve gotten a lot of hurtful things told to me by for wearing pants and having a job. I really hope one day she sees that all these people she watches and follows online are either grifting for money or so chronically online that they’re mentally ill and aren’t participating in society. But having a relationship with God is eternal, it will never change because he will never change.

Yeah I never understood why Christians where so defensive against "Christian feminist" but had no issue with "Christian nationalists". I mean if you think feminism has no basis on the Bible because women have to be submissive, so does nationalism because we Christians are supposed to claim only one nation that is the kingdom of God. Same for the Christian conservatives who will mock queer/LGBT Christians over the fact that homosexuality is a sin and them making a whole personality/pride around their identity, when their are themselves building their entire personality around hating the self and entertaining a whole load of sin (violence, constantly cussing people, picking fights, etc.)

There was an AITA with a woman asking if she was the asshole for shutting down her husband to have a delivery at home and without painkillers just bc his mom & sisters did it. He argued it was the only for them to "respect her" I-

Maybe it's just me but I don't consider those trad pickme as actually Christian?? like to me, they are comedians larping as Christians. They are the Christianese washed version of the girl boss. There's nothing "soft Christian girl uwu" in putting out whole videos every day. That stuff is A LOT of work and logistics. What they won't tell you is that they also have a team (editing, copywriting, social media managers, etc) which doesn't fit with the "I don't want to join the workd force and stay at home all day uwu" narrative. Just bc you're not in an office doesn't mean you're not working nor help the corporate world running - especially by hiring people. As someone who's doing vlog on the low, unless filming /editing it all day, it's impossible to regularly update video (~weekly basis) without having a team. And since those women braf about taking care of their house and child this is unlikely they are in fact filming & editing all their videos by themselves.

IDK most of those girls come off as highkey deceptive, bored and just want to flex their lavish lifestyle. In a society when accesss to work is a privilege, not having to even work seems like a luxury. Those chicks are capitalizing off of it.

That being said, I love the irony of those "anti female rights" girls. They've been to school (isn't there a middle aged trad guru who tells girl to not pursue university when she herself has a PhD? 💀), most likely own a bank account, opened their social account without asking for any male permission, wear make up..... but they will swear up and down that females rights and feminism is pointless.... Yeaaah.

I'm 100% convinced most of the girls looking up this content will grow out of this phase though. That's why I'm not too bothered by that. This trend is just the natural consequences of the millenial #girlboss thing - the girls just want to rest for a while lol You can be that in ~10 years, the pendulum will come back in, and a whole new generation of girls who had witnessed the fall from grace of these trad redpill pickme (divorced, single mother, DV, etc.) will revive the girlboss thing as a defiance to the system responsible of that situation ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

I pushed through the essay even though I have very little confidence in it. And now I'm free. Free for a while to do as I please. But then, of course, I suddenly feel empty. I don't feel like doing anything. I look around me, all the material I've gathered, all the work I've put in, all the money I've spent to keep me alive, to try and better my mental health, to enrich myself, to make a difference...and I just think it's...all meaningless. And I'm not worth it. And I should still be better off dead. Why is it never enough? It doesn't matter how well or badly I do. The result is still derision. It doesn't matter what I triumph over. It's never enough. It's never true to my eyes. I've made it through the years and it was geuninely hell. It was poison for the mind, for the heart and soul, yet I made it through. Yet all I can focus on is the damage. The brokenness. The parts of me that had no control over my circumstance. "It's broken, just throw it away." Just throw me away. Just stop. Trying. But I don't. I don't. I don't know why I don't. When I struggle and have these crises of self, of faith, of being alive, a detached part of me sees it as: self-obsessed. There's narcissism in self-loathing, you know?

I'm really tired of being so against myself. All I can see are deficiencies, playing out right to the T as it is written in the textbooks. The statistics. The journal articles studies and the numbers. "You were made to fail." But it's untrue. And yet it's what I believe in.

Why is it when I finally have time, a little space to do something leisurely...to watch videos, to write creative prose, to research and create and play music, FREE from work obligations, my head only then fills with dark fog? With whispers of decay, of a deteriorating mind, holes in my brain, comparison upon comparison. Insidious, relentless, cruel. Nothing will change, it says. Nothing will change because you are incapable of change. You've given up deep in your soul. You're just going through the motions. Nothing will change.

They say I have changed, I have grown. I'm better now. I smile more now. I'm accomplishing so much with so little. (But others have even less than you) It's not enough. All I see are the things I can't do. And the conclusion is that I am unfit for society. I'm not able to work. I'm not able to be realistic or grounded enough, humble enough to do the real, dirty work of putting myself out there and taking in the real world. The one that bites, and steals and r*pes and kills.

I never got to truly be a child, nor a teen, nor a young adult freely. I had to be too old when I was too young. And young now that I'm old. As I near my indisputable age of adulthood, I am terrified that I am not able to be an adult. One who is stable and reliable, composed and wise. I finally have a taste of the childhood I lost, but the joy is tinged with bitter fear, that it will all be gone. That it isn't enough. I coast by the kindness of strangers and friends. But as I grow and grow, I feel embittered and unlovable. Surely the love will run out. The kindness will wane. And then I have nothing left. Nothing good left.

They say a broken bone heals stronger. I don't think that's factually true. But i don't think it's metaphorically true either. Perhaps once, or twice. But after a lifetime of fractures upon fractures, it takes such a light touch to shatter me. I used to be so strong. Mentally, emotionally. Prided myself on it. I knew suffering and I wore it proudly because I thought it made me strong. But it just ate at me, over the years. And now I no longer feel strong. After all that I've survived, I just feel like an empty husk. Biologically, we only get weaker as we go. I made it further than I ever thought I'd do.

And now I'm so afraid . I don't want to deal with being an adult. I don't want to go through the faces of intimacy vs isolation, generativity vs stagnation. Of integrity and despair. I don't want to go through all of it just to settle in the shadows of what I feared and knew I'd be all along. I've read the texts. I've seen enough, with what little I have. It doesn't end well for people like me. Ni speaking here...probably not true, probably reinforcing my fears with cherry-picked predictions and feelings.

But I'm still afraid I'll regret living.

I'm so afraid of being alive. The more I try, the more broken I feel each year. Despite the growth. Despite the tangible good. Something in me shrivels up as time goes on. I worry I cannot keep it going.

I promised I wouldn't leave though. Not just yet.

I hope I won't regret trying. I hope I won't regret this life.

i'm a queer believer. i also haven't been to church in over 10 years. i can't pray or read my bible. i WANT to, but every church growing up was so painful and spiritually abusive, and the grassroots "queer" one i tried to join as an adult with people i thought i could trust turned out to be "it's exactly the same spiritual abuse you grew up with but me, the pastor, is gay this time, and all the other identities are still sinful and bad."

not to mention i'm a high-support-needs autistic, and very few churches i've tried accept that's not God's Judgement, let alone accommodate it.

i just. i believe in God. i believe that those churches that hurt me were not speaking for Them. but that doesn't change the fact that i'm so, so afraid of Them. prayer is a trigger for me. how can i move on? How do i even begin to talk to Them when all mention of Them has always been rotted with hatred and pain? will They wait for me? or am i just damning myself?

If you are one for music or other creative endeavors, I’ve always treasured the saying, “The one who sings prays twice.” The Holy Spirit imbues each of us with unique gifts; whatever yours are, simply using those gifts is a way of honoring and connecting to the Being who made and delights in you.

Meanwhile, there are ways to connect to community beyond church, and places to learn about faith besides the Bible. 

If you have even one person with whom you feel comfortable and enriched by discussing faith stuff, that’s wonderful! 

There are also online communities specifically for LGBTQA+ Christians, such as the Transmission Ministry Collective, which offers community on text-based chat services, video-based support groups, and more. 

And places like the Our Bible App offer devotionals that are LGBTQA+ affirming, and otherwise make room for marginalized folks whom faith communities too often harm or leave out.

In this track, we meet Helena Orsini, played by Lori Lewis, and her mother Sophia, played by Melissa Ferlaak. Lori needs no introduction to fans of the band, she's been one of their singers for many years. Melissa is also known as a metal singer - fun fact, both Melissa and Lori were the singer of Aesma Daeva at one point!

But back to the song...

In this track, Sophia is on her death bed and Helena, who has been taking care of her, is by her side to ease her passing. Sophia, whose husband is long dead, is an accomplished occultist and Helena is a faithful Christian, so both are sure that death will not be the end for Sophia - and indeed we will meet her again much later in this story. But for now, the sorrow of parting dominates the conversation between the two women.

[Sophia:] Dear child of mine, pain turns to destiny... Down from the mountains, in the form of a rose The thunder of oceans shall bring forth the ghost Of an infinite star that will rest in my tree Like the full moon of night Descending like me Such is my journey No matter where my spirit shall travel You will be there... The lyrics (or libretto, whichever you prefer) here, as will often be the case in BA, are closer to poetry than to regular conversation and narration. The lyricist, Per Albinsson, also has some history as a filmmaker - fun fact, he directed Therion's Summer Night City video - and personally I get the impression that he has quite a visual imagination. It's like he paints with words. In some cases, I think his words are more easily felt than rationally understood. Some lines tell the story, others are more akin to poetry, maybe meant to evoke emotions rather than communicate facts.

I would have liked to post a photo of Per as well, but I only found pictures that felt too private to use and/or did not credit the photographer. I will instead link an interview with him on YT.

In order to not write a novel for each song and also in order to not over-interpret the lyrics, I won't do much "poetry analysis" in these texts and focus on the coarser approach of storytelling, but I do think much of the imagery in these lyrics deserves to be considered, savoured, thought about, if you so choose. For example, you can follow the thread of dawn/spring symbolism through this entire work.

In the song, the conversation turns to a more practical matter next:

[Helena:] Forgive my sister, she would not come This travel, she said, you must do alone... [Sophia:] Bring to heart Johanna's name Through my blood you share the same To hold, to keep through dust, through rain

Helena's sister Johanna, whom we will meet shortly, did not wish to visit Sophia in her final hour. Why? As it turns out, Johanna is estranged from her family due to her strongly held religious beliefs - she is busy leading a radical Catholic sisterhood in Rome. The text in the inlay also seems to suggest that Johanna might not be there because she considers Sophia a sinner due to her magical work. The scene description goes into more detail, which sadly did not make it into the finished lyrics:

Sophia is fondling Helena's hand in hers. She utters that Johanna cannot yet accept her mother's deep insight in magical work nor in anything that enriches the human spirit. Helena stresses that she understands. The mother says that one day even Johanna will understand that humanity needs both light and darkness. [...] She asks Helena not to reject Johanna, to continually try to bring her into the real light.

The song ends with more poetry:

[Helena:] Say you knew Yes only you could grow the seeds of time Run and flow through silver snow Of mountains spring must climb From this hill, to waters still My heart will guide your way Love and wrath, my epitaph before your name I lay

If you remember the "seeds of time" image for a reeeaaaally long time, you will encounter it again eventually.

INDIE 5:0 - 5Q's WITH SHANE HEILMAN

Christian singer-songwriter Shane Heilman went from leading a high school to now leading The Psalms Project. 

Leaving his full time role to fully embrace music and coaching shows an unwavering dedication and love for music and the arts.

His recent recognition as the Gold Artist of the Year, achieved through the Modern Musician Gold Artist Program, highlights Shane's exceptional talent and tireless effort.

Over the span of 12 years, The Psalms Project has evolved from a modest church initiative to a global sensation, engaging over 85 musicians and earning acclaim for its innovative approach.

Shane's vision of letting the Word of God speak through music has struck a chord with audiences worldwide, offering them emotional, spiritual, and intellectual depth. Collaborating with renowned artists like Phil Keaggy and Jeff Deyo has further enriched the project's creative landscape.

With the release of "Volume 6: Psalms 47-55," The Psalms Project enters a new era, embracing a modern pop sound under the guidance of external producers.  

We caught up with Shane to find out more about The Psalms Project, his passion for setting the entire Psalms to music, and what fans can look forward to next: 

As an artist who infuses spiritual themes into your music, how do you navigate the balance between artistic expression and faith-based content?

I'm not sure a balance is necessary. I believe all art is "faith-based" in that we as artists express what we believe in. As R.C. Sproul once said, "Everyone is a theologian - the only question is whether you're a good one or a bad one." As someone who sings about the triune God of the Bible, who I believe is the one true God and eternal life itself, I believe I'm singing about the deepest and truest things in the universe, which should lead to better and more impactful art, not the other way around. I know that a lot of "faith-based" art focuses so heavily on the message that the art gets lost, and that is a mistake and a tragedy when it happens.

But that is not the way it should be, and is not the way it has been throughout history. Most of the most moving and epic art ever created was created by Christians as a response to the transcendent beauty and truth of Christianity, from the music of Bach to the painting of the Sistine Chapel. 

Could you speak to the reception of The Psalms Project within the worship music community and its impact on listeners worldwide?

Even though a lot of our songs aren't conducive to congregational singing, many churches around the world use them for that purpose, and many others use our lyric videos in their worship services. 

The impact of our music on listeners has been immense - I receive probably about a dozen or more new testimonials every day from listeners as to how the music has impacted them spiritually. People share stories of re-connecting with God, being delivered from anxiety and depression, and understanding the Bible better as a result of our songs. I've compiled hundreds of testimonials from all over the world from people profusely thanking us for making the music that we do!

How has your personal journey with faith and music influenced the direction of The Psalms Project over the years?

As I've studied the Psalms and put them to music, I've found my theology going in a more conservative/Reformed direction, with a deeper appreciation for how Christians have viewed the Psalms historically. This has led me to be more straightforward and literal with the wording of the Psalms I've put to music, with less commentary or summary. It's also led me to a deeper love for God's sovereignty, justice, and grace. 

What lessons have you learned from your experience of setting the Psalms to music, both artistically and spiritually?

I've learned that joy does not depend on circumstance - it depends on our trust in God and our obedience to Him. Over and over, we see the Psalmists in a horrible situation, but after processing it and praying through it, they are rejoicing in worship and filled with joy, even when their circumstance hasn't changed!

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for The Psalms Project, and how do you envision its future trajectory in the realm of worship music?

Overall, I see The Psalms Project going in a more congregational direction in the future, with a greater variety of song versions released that have an even greater impact on the trajectory of modern worship music, which I think will move in a more congregational and theologically-rich direction in the years to come.

Amnesia horror game researching part 1

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a survival horror[1]adventure video game by Frictional Games, released in 2010 for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems, in 2016 for the PlayStation 4 platform and in 2018 for the Xbox One.

The game features a protagonist named Daniel exploring a dark and foreboding castle called Brennenburg, while trying to maintain his sanity by avoiding monsters and unsettling events.

The game was critically well-received, earning two awards from the Independent Games Festival and numerous positive reviews.

Gameplay

The player takes control of Daniel, who must navigate Castle Brennenburg while avoiding various dangers and solving puzzles. The gameplay retains the physical object interaction used in the Penumbra series, allowing for physics-based puzzles and interactions such as opening doors and fixing machinery.

Smaller items can be stored in an inventory menu, while larger objects can be raised by holding down a mouse button and pushing or pulling the mouse.

Objects such as doors or levers can be manipulated by using the mouse in a fashion that imitates moving the said object. The difficulty level can be adjusted before starting the game, but cannot be readjusted once the game has begun.

In addition to a health indicator, Daniel's sanity must be managed, centered around an "afraid of darkness" mechanic. According to designer Thomas Grip, "the idea was basically that the darkness itself should be an enemy."

If a monster sees Daniel, it will chase him until he evades its sight. Daniel has no means of fighting monsters, so he must either avoid being seen or run away. Daniel can withstand only a few attacks from a monster before he dies, which will cause the most recent save of the game to load. The player can restore Daniel's health by using laudanum found throughout the game.

The player can hinder monsters by closing doors and building barricades from nearby objects. However, monsters can destroy doors and knock over objects.

Hiding in dark areas where monsters will not notice Daniel is also effective, but will decrease Daniel's sanity. In higher difficulties, the monsters will move faster, deal more damage and search for Daniel for longer periods of time.

Plot

On 19 August 1839, a young man awakens in the dark and empty halls of Brennenburg Castle in Prussia with no memory about himself or his past. All he can remember is that his name is Daniel, that he lives in Mayfair, and that something or someone is hunting him.

Shortly after regaining consciousness, Daniel finds a note he wrote to himself, which informs him that he has deliberately erased his own memory and is being hunted by a "Shadow", an unearthly presence that manifests itself through fleshy, acidic growths spreading throughout the castle.

The note instructs Daniel to descend into the Inner Sanctum of the castle in order to find and kill its baron, Alexander.

As he makes his way through the castle, Daniel gradually learns both about its mysteries and about his own past, through notes and diaries he finds as well as through sudden flashbacks and visions. The origin of his situation is a mysterious orb that he recovered from the Tin Hinan Tomb, which unleashed the Shadow.

However, Alexander's true purpose is to use Daniel's vitae-enriched orb to return to his native dimension, from which he was banished centuries prior.

To achieve this end, Alexander and Daniel gathered vitae by torturing innocent people that Alexander claimed to be murderous criminals.

Increasingly desperate to escape the Shadow, Daniel became sadistic in his attempts to harvest vitae, and accidentally killed an escaping prisoner, a young girl, in a fit of rage.

Following the final ritual, Alexander sensed Daniel's guilt and declining faith in him and left him for dead as a result. Realizing how Alexander had manipulated him, Daniel swore revenge and swallowed an amnesia potion in order to overcome his paralyzing guilt.

Once Daniel enters the Inner Sanctum, he finds Alexander preparing to open the portal. From here, there are three possible endings:

If the player does nothing, Alexander enters the portal, leaving Daniel to be killed by the Shadow and descends into darkness, while Alexander tells him his sacrifice will be forever celebrated.

If the player prevents the portal from opening by knocking over its support columns, the Shadow kills Alexander and spares Daniel, allowing him to leave the castle content with his redemption.

If the player throws Agrippa's head into the portal, the Shadow kills both Alexander and Daniel, though Agrippa promises to save Daniel from descending into darkness, calling upon Weyer to help him.

Amnesia: Justine

In addition, the game's soundtrack is available for purchase and a free content expansion Justine has been released, as well as many fan-made expansions and stories for its unique "Custom Story" game mode.

The player takes control of an unnamed woman, who awakens with amnesia in a dungeon cell. A phonograph in the cell contains a recording by a woman named Justine, who tells the unnamed woman that she is the subject of a psychological test. The woman must overcome three puzzles to escape the dungeon.

In each, she has the option of simply abandoning the puzzle and walking away, but doing so will cause an innocent victim to die.

She is also pursued by the Suitors, three monstrous characters who turn out to be Justine's former paramours, now twisted by physical and psychological torture. After surviving the puzzle sections, the woman discovers a phonograph dangling from the ceiling, which causes the walls of the chamber to close in and threaten to crush the woman.

She passes out, but awakens unharmed and begins to congratulate herself. The woman is Justine, who staged the entire experiment to see if she still had any compassion for humanity within herself. The ending sequence's dialogue differs depending on the number of people Justine had rescued.
