sometimes i think "man i wish tma included more things that really freak me out..."

and then i remember that the things that really freak me out are fucking weird. like, i'm most scared by some of the objectively least scary (supernatural) things that could ever happen.

i'm completely fine with a worm hive person, or an endless sky that eats you, or being buried alive. but then...

for example, today, my smoke detector went off, so i took out the batteries. and for a second i was terrified at the thought that it might beep again while there were no batteries in it. like, that's more scary to me than actual Horrors. wtf?

#i think actually the closer it is to normal reality the more it scares me #like monsters and pocket dimensions and that kind of stuff most definitely don't exist #so they don't freak me out as much #but like... when everything seems to be normal but something's just slightly off...#not even necessarily something creepy in itself #but something that shouldn't be possible #that just doesn't make sense #and you might not even realize at first #idk man #some of the horrors also scare me tho #tma #the magnus archives #tma podcast #magpod

TMA x Hetalia crossovers are so good actually cuz the nations as a concept are pretty creepy if you think about it. Like you’re telling me that there are people who are not people out there that can know you deeply and fundamentally as a person and a timeline if you look into a certain one’s eyes? That have lived quite literally since the beginning of civilizations whom all the blessings and curses of humanity have been thrust upon?? Witnesses to our rise and downfall??? And they’re just OUT THERE?????

In the Magnus Institute there is a hallway lined with portraits of important founders and sponsors only one of which is a painting done in the 1800s of a young man with green eyes and the thickest eyebrows. A portrait that looks suspiciously like the guy who pops in from time to time to have private meetings with Elias. Must be a descendant.

I headcanon that countries faces can’t be digitally recorded in any matter and if they are photographed they become blurry and distorted or obscured by a conveniently passing object or person so the only way they can be portrayed is through drawings. Anyways read Changing Face by Slovenskych on ao3 it gave me so many brainworms that I’m this close to mailing them my hospital bill :)

Horror Podcast Rec - The White Vault

Caught up on the latest episode today, and if you haven't listened to this series yet, I highly recommend it. Especially for Magnus Archives/Protocol fans if you need something to tide you over between eps. The premise of the first season is that a team is sent out to investigate a signal at a remote Arctic outpost... only to get immediately snowed in by a sudden and unexpected storm. While exploring the outpost, they find a network of underground tunnels that turn out to be much, much older and full of more horrors than anyone could have expected. It's brilliantly acted with a cast from all over the world despite being put together by a very small team. S1 and S2 are relatively self-contained and focused on the events at Svalbard, but later seasons and bonus seasons take us all over the world, as we find out the Svalbard outpost was not an isolated incident.

i remember right after the first ep came out, a lot of people in my non-tumblr circles saying of aemma’s death “why did they do that that wasn’t in the books how dare they ugh ugh ugh gross”

and yes

but also that why did they do that is something that’s sitting with me because i think we were all so used to the bar on got being so low that things like that were done to shock the viewer and nothing else. and that’s not hotd’s play.

aemma’s death was setting the stage for eighteen different things—the explicit horror of it was intentional. it echoes through the following episodes, the seed for what we’re seeing with alicent’s marital rape, with viserys never being able to understand that his “love” for the women in his life (aemma, rhaenyra, alicent) and his “i’m just trying to be a good guy” attitude is nothing more than a velvet glove over a punch that still hits just very hard: he treats the women in his life as pawns. not just because king, but because that is who he is even in his most private and “human” moments with them. he waffles and prevaricates and tells different truths to different people he cares about because he himself can’t face his own truths.

and all that is before we get to what’s yet to come, with rhaenyra’s own marriages and childbirths which will absolutely have important echoes of aemma’s death.

this show is highlighting in the most brutal possible way the misogyny of martin’s world. aemma’s death was more than just a plot point, more than just something to make us hide our faces and go “here’s this world again, back at it to horrify us and make us hurt”—it is echoing and reverberating. it is the thesis statement of the whole show. it wasn’t meaningless. it was the point.

#hotd #got critique #idk this has been sitting with me for the past week or so #that by the end of got we were all like just begging for anything to have any meaning at all #and it never did #so we didn't expect the horrors we saw to have meaning anymore #i saw a friend quoting a podcast i don't listen to: that hotd is character driven whereas got was plot driven #d&d didn't understand that to be plot driven you MUST be character driven #which is why they broke their entire show for sansa's plotline in s5 #hotd is making everything character driven #that's why they changed alicent's age #that's why they added details to aemma's death #it's to make all the plot points they're going to hit pack more than a velvet punch #because they're going to hit their characters hearts #not force the characters to have unrealistic emotions out of poorly written shock value
