My top 3 moments where I wanted to kill Arthur Lester for being fucking stupid
(this is not hate, y'all know how I love the babygirl)
3rd place goes to...
Everytime the dude enters a cave, especially that time in Addison when he entered the caved after seeing no trace of the scientist (?) That was supposed to be there and knowing there was a monster in the region. But can I blame him? Probably not, I would do the same
2nd place
When he found those little baby leach-like creatures in the lake down the hotel, and while still keeping his hands on the water, being almost Jane prentiss'ed still was like "well, I guess that's the worse of it, right?" WRONG, WHERE THERE'S BABY THERE'S MOTHER STUPID IDIOT
And final but not least, the moment I realized Arthur mustn't have been very found of physics in high school
The 1st place goes to...
When he used a metal pole against an electric creature back in the dreamlands. Very smart, Arthur. I literally have no comment
Anyway would I do better than him? Of course not, but god did I want to scream at that motherfucker
Anyway
He's my favorite character ever, my special blorbo I fucking love him

I adore the response malevolent listeners have had to John wanting to see a movie, but I'd like to quickly circle back to the "you look like you're 80 pounds sopping wet"
my man is puntable CONFIRMED
THIS is why every single creature he's encountered has been like yeah right fuck you [assaults him] "intimidating stance" sure but they take one look at his scrawny ass and think how far can I yeet this bitch
get dropkicked dumbass

Still figuring out my Arthur design so in the meantime I'm gonna look at 1930s photos and sketch him in different clothes like a little dress-up man

i keep saying this in different ways but i truly just adore arthur lester. he's the most resilient little bug in the whole world. nothing can keep him down. he is filled with rage and grief and joy and hope. he should've died so many times by now, but he cannot. his sheer fucking spirit and will has carried him through unimaginable horrors and it will carry him further

Okay, just really starting to get into Malevolent, and this has probably been said before HOWEVER...in the most vague, least spoilery way possible I do in fact think that Jon "thinks shaking hands with a hot wax person is a good idea" Sims and Arthur "thinks hitting an electric type with a metal pole is a good idea" Lester meeting would be disastrous for all involved.

There's only two reasons Malevolent isn't set in the modern era
Arthur would look less insane by default because he could just keep an earpiece in and pretend he's on a phone call or has a hearing aid the entire time
Gay marriage is legal and if those two were allowed to be freely in love every episode would be twice as long because we'd have to go through 40 EXTRA minutes of homoerotic banter and they'd never get anything done
Sidenotes on these:
I think it would be supremely fucking funny if it was set in the modern era with the headphone thing because Arthur wouldn't appear crazy, he'd appear rude which is infinitely worse and would also annoy the fuck out of his villains and also friends because he looks like he's on a fucking phone call while fighting for his life.
If he pretended he had a hearing aid in he'd be like "I can't believe you're attacking me. I'm literally queer and disabled. You'll get cancelled" and everyone's like 👁👄👁
Also in the hearing aid situation, someone takes it off him or turns it off (idk how hearing aids work) so he won't be able to hear them except he still can and doesn't know how to proceed without his attacker accusing him of faking a disability he was absolutely faking
If they were in a time period where being queer is allowed we'd get Walking Bisexual Disaster Arthur Lester and get acknowledgement that everyone he meets becomes slightly obsessed with him for better or worse and they might (read: are) a little a lot mayhaps definitely attracted to him. a bit.
Arthur Lester would know memes. You guys he'd know what Vine was. He'd be a tiktok cryptid that every one-in-five teenagers in Boston has seen and witnessed doing something absolutely unhinged. A teenager on a train vlogging about their trip when in the background a blind guy is chasing down some random dude and the other guy tries to throw him off the train and the video goes Viral instantly
I'd love to see Arthur, most assuredly up to date with technology try to work with John, who has no idea what the internet or AI is or ORTHUR SOMETHING IS POSSESSING YOUR PHONE IT'S WRITING DOWN EVERYTHING YOU SAY
In conclusion, Modern AU Malevolent would be more comedy than horror-mystery

Thinking about a potential angsty malevolent au that role swaps Arthur and Parker because I honestly don’t think Parker could have reformed John like Arthur did
Like, obviously this is super speculative cause we’ve never met Parker and only know a bit about him 2nd hand
But we know he looked at pathetic drunken mess Arthur Lester, decided that was the man he wanted to be detectives with, and then somehow actually managed to drag him back into being a quasi-functional human being.
We also know he and Arthur were a very effective investigative team, so he probably Arthur balanced out in a lot of ways. Arthur is very reckless and stubborn and throws himself at his problems, maybe Parker was more wary and cautious, more of a planner. Arthur has a remarkable talent for getting people to hate him in a weirdly obsessive way, perhaps Parker had the genuine kind-hearted charisma.
And we know from part 39 that Parker was the one who did most of the physical intimidation and brute strength parts of the job, so he wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty when it came to it.
And I feel like this paints a picture of a man who could get along well enough with the John Doe we have today…but maybe not the Entity he started as.
A big part of the reason Arthur and John’s relationship works is because they have basically the same response to feeling threatened: yell, scream, blame the other person for everything wrong in the world, hit where it hurts, give as good as they take, refuse to give an inch. And when they push too hard, this leads to some really horrible fights. But eventually they wear themselves out, all the feelings are out in the open, they pick themselves up, apologize, and move forward.
This dynamic is established very early on. In the first episode, John/the entity has all the knowledge, he knows more about what happened, about the supernatural, about Arthur’s surroundings. And he immediately uses this power to lie to and manipulate Arthur. But Arthur doesn’t let him keep that power over him for long. He gets his wits about him, establishes his own power as the one with the physical body here, and starts shoving back against John. Every time he does what John says, he makes it clear it’s because he has agreed it’s the best course of action. They establish a balance quickly.
This early in his independent existence, basically all John has is the King’s instincts of “humans are weaklings to be manipulated” and Arthur immediately asserts that that attitude is not going to stand with him, forcing John to rethink his relationship with humanity
Parker…likely wouldn’t have Arthur’s stubborn reckless audacity. I think he’s be more likely to respond with caution, bide his time and try not to make this thing mad until he can figure out how powerful it really is. With the lie that he was the one to kill Arthur, Parker might even extend compassion and empathy towards the entity, thinking that this thing has no memory of who he once was and no bodily autonomy at all, he’s probably really scared and covering it up.
This caution and empathy would serve Parker well in a whole lot of situations and probably save him from a lot that Arthur blunders into, but if he does a lot of what the entity tells him to do with little complaint…he’s going to be accidentally reinforcing the kings instincts that humans are to be bossed around instead of challenging them
And if bides his time until he’s fairly sure the entity can’t really hurt him and then starts pushing back and challenging him, that might feel like a betrayal or deception to the entity
I’m not sure exactly how things would go down, but I just think that Arthur was really the only person who could have set John on the right path by reckless challenging him from the beginning
(Parker paired with Yellow on the other hand… now that’s perfect and everyone needs to go read Refrain from the Surrogate AU right now)

Bracket 2: Round 1, Match 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut! Please be aware that some may contain spoilers.
Gwen Cooper:
She's the bisexual Welsh queen of my heart. Honestly though it is so rare to have a female character who's both the emotional centre of her story and who gets to be complicated, and dark, and make bad decisions, and yet keeps doing the right thing, no matter how hard it is and how much she loses, over and over and over again. More Gwen Cooper appreciation!
She lives in Wales. She left the police to join a secret alien hunting Institute. She is a bisexual disaster. She is fierce. She has the best good boy golden retriever like husband.
Arthur Lester:
This guy is continuously underground/falling off cliffs for no reason at all, it's just always happening. He has an eldritch entity in his head named John who stole his eyes and currently has control of said eyes, most of his left arm, and also his left toes. He's a piano composer. These two are constantly swearing and saying each other's names every five seconds. They're basically a package deal at this point. He's commonly headcanoned as aromantic. He's almost died several times. He was walking through a ruined city in another world with the intent to go through a gate to get back to Earth, and immediately abandoned the plan bc he heard someone playing the song he composed for his daughter on piano. They are regularly in situations where a possible solution is murder, and generally the eldritch horror is not the one advocating for them to kill someone, especially in the beginning of the story. While investigating the horrors, they came across a random baby, and both of them immediately decided they couldn't let anything bad happen to this baby and were just carrying her around for a bit. He bit off part of his own finger (technically it was John's finger). Early on, John says he has a cold, calculating demeanor and then when Arthur asks if he still has it way later he says Arthur looks like he'd be 80 pounds sopping wet. Also he's a private investigator in 1930s Massachusetts, how could I have forgotten. There's 2 eldritch gods relevant to the story, one of them wants him dead because John is a piece of him and he wants him back, and the other is watching what he does for entertainment.
Feel free to add your own in the tags!
