um you don't have to answer, but what about Mindy Kaling do you not like?? I'm Indian myself and i watched a little of her show and something about her just felt Not Good but i couldn't figure it out? if you could put that to words that'd be cool if not, have a good day!

Well uh. I just wanna preface this saying i dont know anything abt mindy kaling. I never watched the office or whatever sitcom she came in first and like i only found out she existed like a yr or two ago when i watched some show she produced. Just going off vibes here alone but yeah i agree the vibes in her shows are just Bad. Theyre all about like... a brown girl being surrounded by hot white men who all want her, and all the other female characters around her come off as shallow and unimportant in comparison to her so they will never be competition for her in that regard. Which sounds like yeah whatever its just trashy television.

But like i feel the grossness of that attitude in her shows rly comes thru when she depicts other indians, especially other indian women. She immediately sets them up as a rival or whatever and its honestly a little embarrassing to watch. Her internalized racism comes thru so aggressively and lol idk if its because ive been around w a Certain Kind of diaspora indians and dealt w their bullshit before but i have zero sympathy anymore for the heartbreaking dilemma of indian americans who have so much internalized racism that they hate their relatives who visit from india and give them second hand embarrassment by being "too indian" and "too perfect" with family stuff in comparison to them. I simply do not care for the self hate that poor indian americans feel around us.

More on how she depicts indians, her right wing sympathies especially visible in never have i ever, but it gets brushed off because ppl outside india will miss it because its not as obvious if ur not in tune w indian politics. Theres so many little things like the main character being completely ignorant of knowing that most of indias population eating nonveg food (showing that shes only picturing uppercaste indians when she thinks of india), the immigrant sister being told that she'd be treated as an outcast in the community if she married someone who her parents didn't pick for her (basically she'd be miserable and never find community again if she doesnt marry a guy of the same caste same religion etc), and then her actually abandoning the guy she liked for the guy her parents chose for her, and the literal shout out to modi the main chatacter's mom does like. U get it. It paints a picture. And the show still gets praised for being progressive because it has a "diverse cast".

Honestly its not even surprising to me that it came out that her brother racefaked to get into college (or whatever he did. I never looked up the details and im not interested to either). Right wingers in india have been attacking affirmative action in india (reservation for depressed classes in institutions) for literal decades because they are losing seats they feel theyre entitled to, but they have no problem going abroad and using 'diversity' to their advantage. Idk if i put it in words right but thats the vibe.

As long as the USA continues to shove into the politics of other nations, especially in the global south, you have the right to comment on what is happening here. I’m happy to be a place for you to vent. You’re also right that the USA is acting like a Main Character. We have done that since Isolationism went out of style. Lots of American politicians on the right talk about ‘America First’ and staying out of other countries’ problems, but they just mean they don’t want to send aid money. Almost every American politician still wants to get involved when it suits their interest (oil, money, personal agenda, personal religion)

Talking about Biden is an intentional distraction here. In part because our politics is a mess of blame shifting and personal attacks. In part because it’s election time, and anything a president running for re-election does is heavily scrutinized. But also, because most americans don’t know enough about global politics to actually talk about it. Instead, we make it about ourselves.

That gets amplified online, and especially on tumblr bc there’s a lot of americans on english websites. We are used to everything being about us.

You’re right that our politics have a huge impact globally. That’s also true for Russia, China, and some key European countries. For the most part, the global south is considered unimportant. Not saying that’s a good thing, but it’s definitely true right now. The next american election could, genuinely, collapse the USA as we know it. I don’t mean the country will turn into anarchy and the purge overnight if Trump wins, but it would be very bad. I’ll ignore the problems we would have domestically for now and how those filter into the rest of the world. That’s an entire essay. They’re huge, but you asked about why we only see things through our own lens.

I kind of want to say that we just suck. That it’s ego, and nothing else. But, we’re actually taught to think this way. That won’t help your frustration, but it is the Why.

Americans get raised with an american perspective, obviously. We’re taught, pretty specifically, that we are a superpower who can change anything we want, and the rest of the world can’t stop us. Having veto power in the United Nations is a good example. We don’t see things that aren’t filtered through American media and reports unless we go out and look for them. Hell, we’re at a record high right now because 60% of americans have passports. We don’t go to other countries, when we do, we expect them to cater to us. We never see anything but the american side of things.

And if America is the only one who can really have any impact, we see our elections as the Most Important Thing. It isn’t completely wrong. How our politicians think about other countries has a direct impact on the rest of the world. We supply a huge amount of money, weapons, and aid to countries. Right now, funding for aid to Ukraine and Gaza are really contentious in Congress. Congress has to pass the bills that let Biden send help. Our system is a mess, and we have people who are elected thanks to a few thousand, or a few hundred voters, that are going to be critical to get those bills passed.

But that’s the bigger picture. That’s officials, and why, in a lot of ways, it DOES matter to the rest of the world how our politics change. I don’t like that, but so long as it’s true, then any american who cares about the rest of the planet needs to focus on effecting our government’s choices.

As for individuals. You are very, very right about this. We treat global events as set dressing for our leaders. Like I said, it does matter, but the way we talk, especially online, is performance.

Lots of americans WANT to help internationally. We feel helpless to do that. If you don’t have the money to donate to charities, it feels like all you can do is scream. Media and news in America doesn’t talk about the rest of the world, so we pour all of that anger onto our politicians, and expect them to fix it. We feel weak, we don’t know what to do, so we do the only thing we know. We don’t know the names of Knesset leaders. We don’t even know about UK politics unless it’s really dramatic, and they’re our closest ally and culture.

To use your metaphor; we’re screaming at the manager because we think he has the keys, and we’re in the fire too. He doesn’t. We don’t know how to handle that. So we’re just screaming.

As for Kissinger, it ties into the above, I promise. A lot of the hate for him, and the celebrating that he died, is because we know what America has done is fucked up. He was a symbol of that. Lots of young americans hate what we did. Shit, lots of americans who were young back in the 70s hate what we did. Him dying felt like we’d gotten rid of some of the baggage tied to us (it doesn’t, we still interfere all over the world) It was a bit of good news when we are facing the fact that we can’t force other countries to obey us.

I’ve talked before about how conflicted I am about this. I badly want America to step in Fix It. I want us to help the Rohingya. I want us to stop Putin in Ukraine. I want us to force a peace deal in Israel and somehow make things right. I want that so badly because I hate what’s happening. I also hate the idea of America continuing to act like we’re the main character. But. I hate that we could do more, and we aren’t. I think a lot of Americans feel that way.

Americans who are watching the rest of the world feel weak right now. Younger Americans - who are more likely to be online talking, AND more likely to be watching the rest of the world - feel weak in every part of our lives. Money, politics, social stuff, corruption. We feel like we aren’t able to do anything. So we’re screaming at the manager because staying quiet hurts too much, and we don’t know how to change it.

This is already long, and I don’t think it will make you or anyone else feel better. But I want to add this.

Everyone pays attention to their immediate surroundings first. The people of Guyana are focused on Venezuela trying to annex them. The people of Sudan are thinking about how everything is falling apart for them. The problems in the US are pretty privileged. The danger for trans americans is bad right now. It’s not wrong to think about keeping yourself alive and safe first. You put on your own oxygen mask first. Everyone does.

I don’t know if I missed something that you want me to talk about. I don’t know if this was helpful at all. Really, I just sympathize with you. It isn’t fair, it isn’t right, I want to shake americans by the shoulders, and I can’t. And I hate that.

Do people not know movie theater etiquette anymore?

Genuinely I think there's a large portion of people who don't and it's not necessarily their fault. With streaming becoming so huge and some movies being available for streaming right away due to covid, I think a lot of people haven't been to the theater in years.

Then the Barbie movie happend and built the entire promotion campaign of Oppenheimer and suddenly everyone was going to the theater again, which is great!

But I'm noticing a lot of people who don't know how to behave. There are some people who dont even understand reserving seats which makes sense. I'm the history of movie theaters, that's a relatively new practice. But I'm talking more basic behavior. Since I'm a movie fiend, here are some basic guidelines based on things I've actually been seeing irl in theaters.

Movie theater dos and don'ts:

1. Do not go on your phone. It is genuinely distracting and takes people out of the movie.

2. Do not leave your phone on vibrate. Leaving your ringer off is obvious but vibrate is just as bad. Especially if there's a quiet moment. People will hear that shit.

3. Do not leave your phone in a cup holder. Even if it's on silent, it will light up at notifications which is distracting.

4. Do not talk the entire time. An occasional whisper is ok, but a full conversation that has nothing to do with the movie is a big no.

5. DO NOT TALK ALONG WITH THE MOVIE. This happend to me last night and the wound is still fresh. Do not speak lines along with the movie at full volume. Whispering is ok, but white 30 year olds think it's acceptable to fucking yell lines of movie and they never time it right and it's distracting and rude. Do that at home or go to the Alamo Draft House (they literally have talk along screenings).

6. Do no kick the chair in front of you. When I saw Bottoms, the person behind me kicked my seat every time there was a joke and I almost killed them. Sometimes you shift around and can't help it, but try not to.

7. Be aware of your general surroundings. I think people (especially Americans) find it hard to understand that they aren't the main character. You are in a room of like 30 people at least who all want to enjoy this experience. You have to understand that and be courteous. Movie theaters are a communal experience. Enjoy that aspect, but don't ruin it for everyone.

8. If you are asked to select a seat when you purchase your ticket, then sit in the seat you pick. Your ticket says the row and seat number. It's awkward to ask someone to move and it causes confusion. Sit in the seat you picked.

It can be hard to read the room in a theater. Sometimes it's a quiet showing. Something everyone just collectively agrees to cheer and clap etc. It's best to stick to these guidelines until you get the vibe of the room.

oh luckily no one on ebay is even selling the particular pressing of cluster & eno that i’d want so theres no current tangible temptation. theres actually still a lot of eno stuff i wanna pick up someday i always forget how much of his work i havent really delved into yet. like evening star and no pussyfooting and then some of his ambient albums and music for stuff like the only of those i have is ambient 4 on land which i got at the thrift for like a nickel so many years ago and is just perfect imo idk i get most of my stuff on ebay GOD ITS WEIRD im realizing this rn but i do get most of my stuff on ebay or at used goods stores for normal price knowledgably hunting for it but like the stuff i randomly get at thrifts and stuff like i grow so closer to that like it feels much more closer to me like that i dont listen to super super often really but it has a weird deep nostalgic vibe for me alone on how i found it. same w/ cocteau twins sunburst snowblind head over heels cd and stone roses debut like since i got them there randomly it has this weird deep random feeling like just got them totally by chance cause especially there they have a extremely small cd section so anything good like that gets scooped up a day after being put out especially since prices are so low u can really easily afford to buy every cd there for like less than 10$ lol. oh ya and ofc silver jews american water i got there and was like :O listening to it like just at the context of that particular thrift getting it there feels like it was like religiously sent into your life. oh ya i also got sheila chandra silk compilation there too which is one of my fav albums just cool shit like that. anyways ya theres lots of eno stuff i havent listened to yet :P i used to have discreet music but sold it cause i didnt really care for it tooo much just as a side long track it was nice but kinda didnt yet escape just being bgm atleast for me and knowign that a shorter slightly alternate except is on evening star id rather just listen to that. like discreet music is nice but despite all the praise he gets (and deserves) i dont think discreet music is any better than anything terry riley or steve reich had previously put out in terms of being engagin while possibly inducing a meditative state.

Since I've seen a few reblogs of it I thought I'd take a look at the actual context of James Cameron saying some messed up stuff, and while yeah its a wierd thing to say even in context the actual context, as usual, is pretty different than what the out of context snippet would make you think.

Its a really shit way to phrase it but the 'they' in the contextless quote is referring to kids committing suicide because of colonialism destroying their livelihood, not like. The Lakota people's livelihood being hopeless and a dead-end as the out of context quote makes it seem. Honestly the real shitty bit here is him seeming to say the problem is that they... didnt fight back hard enough??? Wat.

Like I'm not even saying James isn't being some form of racist here, (I mean have you watched Avatar) but can't we critiscise people for what they're actually saying and not picking out bits to make them seem as bad as possible.

And the fact the context of this is him trying to stop a dam getting built that would destroy another peoples way of life, like the reason he's saying the above is, very poorly, him saying 'whats happened to the indigenous people of north america is happening in brazil'.

Ive probably myself reblogged some things like that to be fair but I do try not to or at least read the thing first, and like 60% of the time people are getting mad at the wrong thing or its just not true or exaggerated.

An actual criticism to be made here is his white savior-y vibes. Which isn't surprising, considering... Avatar.

There's a pretty significant difference between 'James Cameron thinks native americans are hopeless and a dead-end society' and 'James Cameron has a wierd white saviour complex but seems to be doing something about colonialism at least'.

Like I don't really care if he's bad at phrasing it if he's putting his money where his mouth is then that's good. He probably isn't but still.

Also this wierd chinese curse quote. Actually painful how obvious this is the guy who made Avatar.

I do kinda wanna say I really, really hate it when people take snippets or titles of articles out of context and dont link a source to a post so people can't check if they've cropped out a bunch of context.

Especially titles, most journalists don't even get a say on that, no matter how misleading it is.

'Teen Titans' is very broad. lots of things that could refer to, so i'll give my opinions on all the possible ones i can think of:

Vol. 1 / Silver Age - i have read like 3 total comics from that era but love the vibes tbh

1967 Filmation shorts - THESE ARE SO FUNNY PLS WATCH THEM!!! they're like on youtube. theres so much going on

The New Teen Titans (80s) - i still need to actually read this run start to finish not just in random chunks when the mood strikes/i have a specific question im trying to answer but like, iconic

Vol. 2 (90s) - i forgot this one existed until i was just looking at all the different possible teen titans things to talk about. so. i think that says my thoughts about that

2003 Cartoon - i grew up on this one babey (like i remember watching it as new episodes came out and everything) its always gonna hold a special place in my heart and tbh was one of my first introductions to superhero stuff in general

New Teen Titans shorts - these were so cute. the who is red x one where gar insists its jason... iconic

Vol. 3 (2003) - Geoff Johns face my wrath for what you did to the core four. but um. a WILD ride from start to finish i can tell you that!!!! i shit talk this comic a lot but like it does definitely have its moments and there are some cool and interesting things it did, it just also showed a blatant disregard for previous characterization of four of its main characters which annoys the shit out of me and always will.

Tiny Titans - SHOWSTOPPING. LEGENDARY. THE ONLY COMIC EVER

Teen Titans Go! - im going to be so real with you i understand why so many ppl hate this show but its actually so fucking funny to me. i dont regularly watch it or anything but like. it is so amusing to me. every time i remember the urn marked 'Robin II' displayed next to a crowbar i lose MY MIND. or the 'NOBODY CARES ABOUT TIIIIM DRAKE'.

Vol. 4 (2011/New 52) - this comic caused me physical pain to read. nothing makes sense. none of the characters are themselves. shit is just a mess, an absolute mess. however Bunker? Miguel? I love him. best thing to come out of this damn comic.

Teen Titans Go! To The Movies - go watch this right fucking now if you haven't seen it. its literally so good even most ppl who hate ttg still will admit its good. my friend recently reminded me that when we saw it in theaters there was a part that made me laugh so hard i literally fell out of my chair

Vol. 5 (2014/Still New 52) - this one is also really bad but at least its kinda funny. definitely more pleasant to read than Vol. 4 but like its still not good or pleasant to read, i just mean that like, in comparison. the last two issues i actually genuinely like tbh (bc #23 is a standalone like, just nice team story, and then #24 is a memorial for Tim after he 'died' in Rebirth)

Justice League vs Teen Titans movie - the dcamu is a fucking fever dream but like the concept of max from wizards of waverly place voicing jaime while violet from american horror story voices raven amused me so much. also the FUCKIN UHHH MAGICAL GIRL-ESQUE TRANSFORMATION SCENE WITH DAMIAN THEN JUST TRYING TO BREAK INTO THE CAR FOR HIS SWORD IS SO FUCKING FUNNY

Teen Titans: Judas Contract movie - its the judas contract. it is what it is.

Vol. 6 (Rebirth) - i have not read too much of this one (like. ive read... chunks of it but not the whole thing) but eh. i've heard bad things about later parts of it especially and from what i've read that seems to... line up.

Titans TV show - a hot mess. superhero riverdale. i binged the first two seasons within 48 hours. very nice costumes and mostly very well cast but the writing makes me die

Tween Titans - in that one episode of dc superhero girls. im just obsessed with Dick having the thick jersey accent its so fucking funny

Teen Titans Academy - I really was not vibing with it early on but as we've actually gotten to focus on the new kids more i've liked it more, but overall its just way too bloated of a cast. having the new characters students, the previous team older students, and then the og titans as teachers is just... too much to focus on in one book. then also did not like the attempt at dick/babs/kory love triangle drama in like issue 2 get tht shit outta here

and if u meant more just the team overall like. i think the titans are cool

i didnt think the 'andy + slavery' thing was handled as badly as everyone made it out to be when telling me about it. tho from the way it was talked about i had kind of figured the conflict between andy and nile re: slavery would be really racially charged (esp considering nile is a black american and would obvs have Thoughts on the subject in that regard) but like,, done in a cringey 'a-white-guy-obviously-wrote-it' kind of way? but it wasnt that. i mean. it makes sense that andy would be implicit in slavery through the years

i mean, like she says, is that not what people just did to each other in the aftermath of battles for thousands of years? and i really like how its pointed out that it was what she was raised with (in the beginning when you see her put shackles on that guy after the battle) but she also accepts responsibility for it and acknowledges that it was wrong and not just 'what people did'.

i like how from her expressions you can kind of tell baby andy knew it was off but she sets those feelings aside bc she felt angry. it explains how she felt but didnt make her out to be blameless in it. plus i mean. i dont know, the fact that andy was involved in a lot of morally shady stuff for 7000 years is not that wild for me. if you live that long youre just Going to be involved in some shit, and she didnt even have other immortals with her as positive community influences, she literally just did whatever the fuck she wanted for thousands of years

joe just found out his old friend who he thought was dead is alive (and also probably wants to murder them) and instead of investigating with andy he stopped to help nile up. champ.

on that note imo copley was. weirdly enough, more interesting in fm than in tog1. to me at least. the fact that andy let him live and he was so haunted by what had happened that he came back and sought them out despite knowing they would likely kill him for it bc he wanted to not only make up for what hed done but also to tell them what theyd done for the world was admittedly more interesting than andy just kind of drafting him to the cause and him going 'okie'

i like how nicky was drawn in this one. in opening fire he looks like a blob man but in fm he looks more like a very nice grampa with a very good dye job

ive hit the picture limit but id seen that panel where nicky goes 'forgive me' as he kills a guy out of context and it was HILARIOUSLY anticlimactic for me to discover that there was literally no context to it. nicky just apologizes to random people he kills. i thought that guy was someone he knew or something. nope its just Some Guy that nicky didnt know from adam

nile's complaint that andy was especially brutal to the guys on the boat... i mean. . , how exactly does one kill a man with an axe and not be brutal about it?

it was funny how noriko kissed andy and the only people who seemed surprised by that were nile and also andy

nicky and joe's complete non-reaction to finding out noriko is alive And Evil Now is endlesly funny. they just left her on that boat and neither cared. i get book and nile not caring but joe and nicky knew her, and they just have 0 input on the subject of what to do with her

i dont know, i get why people didnt like the ending but its. .. . it makes more sense in the comicverse. bc the squad doesnt really. .. interact outside of jobs? i mean, think of the moon landing story in ttt. that was booker and joe and nicky doing a job and andy only showed up a for a couple minutes after it was done. or the brunch in the first issue of opening fire. the squad arent as tight in the comic, and andy often seems to do her own thing outside of work, so andy saying 'i dont want to do work anymore' and the squad being like 'alright bye then' makes more sense in this universe than the movie one

also i feel like greg was Trying to set up a thing where nile becomes the Leader of The Squad after andy dies but like. its not very well done since. . . i mean, nile hasnt spoken to booker since opening fire, (and she only knew him A Day). and shes known joe and nicky all that time, but there isnt really anything that indicates that they have any relationship at all, much less one that's grown. in all the comicverse the only time nile and nicky speak is in FM, and in that scene nicky tells nile about noriko. nile goes from someone who needs to be set aside to have background knowledge explained to her to being the Leader of the group with nothing in between. it kind of... comes out of nowhere.

on the other hand tho... i felt really bad for andy thru the whole thing. well, i always felt bad for andy, but in this one she seemed so miserable, especially since it really felt like none of the others actually.... cared about her. when noriko came back no one asked andy how she was doing (big question ik, but it wouldve showed they cared at least), nobody ever expressed any concern for her, no one even really seemed to want to be around her. in opening fire everyone was more distant than in the movie of course, but there were little moments where she would joke with joe, or nicky would try and comfort her, or stuff like that, but in FM it really felt like they just didnt really care about her. & in opening fire it felt a lot like andy's relationship with nile breathed some new life into her, but in FM it felt like all they did was argue. i get theyre not *as* close in the comics but it really felt like the only person who cared about andy at all was noriko (which was probably also how andy felt) but it just seemed to come out of nowhere. honestly i was reading and i was honestly agreeing with andy that she might just be better off if she did just die. opening fire, on the other hand, never make me feel that way

tho everyone made it sound like when the squad split up it was one of those cursed 'the found family leaves each other at the end of the journey' tropes. but guys i mean,,, this is the second installment out of three. that isnt the End. theyll come back in the third one and Dramatically Reunite to fight some baddies (probably those 'others' noriko mentioned). im guessing yitzhak fits into that too somehow.

anyways it wasnt That Bad but it made me kind of sad and the only Sweet Found Family vibes in it were when they saved booker. also they shouldve beefed up that nilemoose romance, it underwhelmed me. 6.5/10

i also ABSOLUTELY understand all of greg's comments about how you couldnt make FM directly into a movie, he always said that it had no plot and. i get it now. it really didnt have a plot sdfghjkl
