All the Times Eugene & Ae Shin Interacted (Part 2 of 2)
74. Eugene brings Baron Kuroda into the cabin, stopping the Japanese soldiers. Him: "You should take a step forward. I will take a step back." He made the soldiers go into the caboose and shot so that the caboose would separate from the rest of the train. She cried after him as he was being shot.
75. A letter he wrote before their trip to Japan: "By the time this letter reaches you, I probably won't be in Joseon anymore. Tomorrow, we're going to Japan together. I think that will be how we part ways. No matter where you were headed, I wanted to stand right in front of you. But I did not know that parting ways with you was what was ahead of me. Every step I took with you... meant everything to me. Every moment I spent with you... was like a picnic to me. In English, it's spelled as 'picnic.' It starts with a 'P.'" Are you still working on protecting Joseon? I hope you are. Go Ae Shin was a very passionate woman. And Go Ae Shin was the woman I deeply loved. Well then. Goodbye." (ep. 24)
76. Flash back to when they went fishing and he caught all the fish. She thought "fish" started with a "P."

I’m a bit late but last night I finished watching Mr. Sunshine. I want to get this of my chest.
I hate the way that Gu Dong Mae puts Ae Shin over everything, sure she’s the main character but this is my opinion:
I ship Dong Mae and Hotaru so much and this hits my mind. I think it’s very irrational of how Dong Mae just throws Hotaru out without any sort of guilt. They have been together for many years and it’s a relationship with a lot of history, eventhough it was not necessarily a romantic one it’s a relationship built by mutual respect and trust. That’s also a reason that Dong Mae was furious becaus he trusted Hotaru.
Now let’s talk about Dong Mae and Hotaru’s relationship:
They’re story starts in when Hotaru is brought to Dong Mae by a brothel house owner giving her with cheap price. When the man goes out, Dong Mae finish eating and goes to sleep. Seeing this opportunity she quickly takes her hair pin and stabs his shoulder. Seeing him not even flinching, she calms down and steps back.
If you want to know the full story just watch episode 21.
We can see that he is very soft to Hotaru.
Tumblr media
In this scene this shows their relationship very deeply. When Hotaru is hurt by those men, Dong Mae quickly defends her and bring her to her feet. Then he kills those men who hurts her. Also a very good detail is he gives Hotaru her notebook, meaning he is giving her voice because she is a mute. This shows how much he cares
Tumblr media
Especially when Dong Mae is captured, Hotaru quickly goes to Hina to ask about him. When he is finally back she quickly runs and hug him. This scene is so so so beautiful!
Tumblr media
In this scene when Dong Mae is hospitalized, Hotaru stayed beside him all the time. She reads the card of his fortune and when he wakes up she quickly feels relief.
Tumblr media
And in the final scene of them together, when she reveals the reason why she did what she did to save him, my heart just broke. She truly only cared about him so deeply. This also made me think about when Yujo, Dong Mae’s most trusted man basically tell him that he is doing all of this only for a woman. I’m more mad that this drama doesn’t give a conclusion to Hotaru’s ending or story, like what she does after being kicked out.
And that’s it my friends. Please anyone make a fanfic or fmv for them because my heart is hungry for them

Mr. Sunshine Ep 7 thoughts
I don’t think that was a flashforward that happened with the three of them with ae shin. I think that was what they wished had happened with Ae Shin. Like Eugene must have wished he met Ae Shin in America, Dong Mae wished he me Ae Shin when he was already a powerful leader and Hui Seong wished he had come back earlier and already was married to Aeshin. Those were what they hoped for in their minds, not the situation they are in now. Because lets face it all of them are currently in the dog house when it comes to Ae Shin with Eugene again having the advantage because he had saved her yet again from being exposed by shooting himself in the hand and confronting the mad japanese soldier Tsuda.
I really hoped that Hui Seong would not go dark by forcing Ae Shin to marry him and using the promise between their families to force Ae Shin’s hand.
I really hoped that Ae Shin’s influence to the three men will be for the good and making them more noble and heroic...Although if i get my wish on this then I will end up destroying myself because then they would all die a horrible death trying to save Joseon from being completely conquered by Japan since this is a historical drama and the show is bound to go to that time of Japan completely taking over Joseon huhuhu... But if these three men would change and their motivations would align to Ae Shin’s hope to save Joseon then I will get my wish of all these people teaming up to save Joseon... Maybe the writer can even make this drama a wish fullfillment that would somehow end with Joseon winning rather than losing. I mean this is historical fiction after all, the writer can choose to change the ending from sad to happy...
I know the fans have different ships they love for this drama but for me I follow Ae Shin’s choice always because she is a heroine who knows her own mind and who knows what she wants. And so far in this drama, her choice seems to be towards Eugene romantically maybe because even when Eugene keeps on saying he wants to do something for the doom of Joseon, the actions that she has witnessed so far has been to help Joseon since he has been helping her. Any actions that Eugene take to help and protect her was a further help to Joseon that is why Eugene has the advantage than the other two. Although Dong Mae might get his chance in the next episode because he will finally find out her alter ego and obviously he will end up helping her to protect her... Unless he would do something that would end up killing the geisha/rebel girl, then if that happens he can just kiss whatever chance he hopes to have with Ae Shin goodbye because Ae Shin will truly despise him if the girl will not be able to get to safety to Shanghai...
Ep 8 will be a crossroads for Dong Mae and I am looking forward to what he will do. Of course my girl,Ae Shin, will continue to be heroic as always just like her parents without any fear for her life. I’m also looking forward to what Eugene might do when he finds out that Ae Shin will try to rescue the girl So A in broad daylight! I hope Eugene will find out and also help the girl So A. I wonder when Hui Seong finds out about Ae Shin’s alter ego.... I hope he really won’t go villainous by forcing Ae Shin to marry but do something heroic to earn him a chance with Ae Shin...please please drama... I want them to all become heroes in this drama... Ae Shin, Eugene, Dong Mae, Hui Seong and Hina...

Drama ramble that takes us from Touch to Mr. Sunshine to The Heirs - the good, the bad, and the ugly - but which is which, you may ask
I guess my dilemma whether to check out Touch is solved for me. I was kind of iffy on it because I like Joo Sang Wook but am not familiar with anyone else in the cast, I find make-up artists and idols not professions I am interested in as a setting outside of some true cracky set-ups not present here, and while I can deal with a large age difference in either a period setting or if it somehow makes sense in the story, I wasn’t sure that would be the case here. But it’s out of my hands now because I am pretty sure nobody is subbing it (viki bought it but it’s at 0% for days with no team set) and I am certainly not invested enough to watch raw.
I am also six eps into Mr. Sunshine and it’s such a quality drama. Not to mention visually stunning - the scene with Eugene at his parents’ graves is poetry. Plus the acting is top-notch: say what you will about Lee Byung Hun on a personal level, as an actor, he is uniformly excellent and the rest are equally good.
I don’t have much of a ship in this drama, which is unusual for me. I like Ae Shin x Eugene just fine but I think it’s because the drama and the characters are about so many other things first, over love.
I do think Kim Eun Sook is one of the most consistently solid kdrama writers out there. I’ve seen almost every one of her dramas - the Lovers trilogy, City Hall, On Air, Secret Garden, A Gentleman’s Dignity, the Heirs, Descendants of the Sun, Goblin, now Mr Sunshine. (The only one I haven’t watched is her very first one, South of the Sun, which I’d love to because I adore both melos and Choi Min Soo.) They vary wildly in genre from romcom to melo to fantasy to sageuk (and within those divisions they are still on very different ends of the spectrum - City Hall with its political sophisticated banter and 30+ protagonists is miles away from e.g., bratty high school hijinks of The Heirs) but they almost uniformly work for me.
The only exceptions are The Heirs and (sort of) DOTS. And DOTS is not even a proper exception - it’s a solidly-written and directed drama with good chemistry between the leads. I probably would have enjoyed it immensely if it wasn’t so hyped by the time I got around to it, that no drama could have lived up to the expectations. Also, that setting made me want an intense melo, which is a purely personal preference (think Swallow the Sun), while this drama stayed lighter throughout. But still, it was a pleasant enough watch.
The Heirs is the sole one of her dramas that didn’t work for me - I didn’t loathe it like a number of tumblr peeps, but it was a blah drag that I finally dumped. But I think it’s a combo of things. There was all the miscasting - I adore Lee Min Ho but a Rui-type guy is not a role that plays to his strengths; quite the opposite. It would have been much better to cast someone like Lee Jong Suk, though the School 2013 reunion with him and KWB would certainly switch any shipping focus from the heroine. Park Shin Hye is not an actress I am enthusiastic about but she’s worked for me in other dramas; however she tends to be better playing spunky or forthright - her poor heroine character in The Heirs was so mousy, she disappeared into wallpaper, so she needed an actress who can take over the screen by sheer charisma even if the role is underwritten (think Jung So Min or Park Min Young, though the latter would have been hella awkward for all concerned.)  Kim Woo Bin was excellent (about the only excellent job in the cast, IMO) but his character was pretty much Baek Kyung from Extraordinary You, if BK didn’t figure out he was a character in a comic book, and the appeal for that sort of thing is limited for me. There was a bunch of other actors, ranging from OK to not good to good but so wasted in the role. And they were all much too freaking old!!! I still have no idea why the drama wasn’t set in college at the very least - if we take Lee Min Ho alone, he played a high school student after he portrayed an almost-30 year old general in Faith (!!!) or a definitely-adult killing machine assassin in City Hunter (!!!!). I kept expecting hoping for him to snap out of it and start breaking necks!
But the thing is, while the casting was blah, the story was the real problem for me. I think it’s pretty significant that the sole KES drama that didn’t work for me at all is the sole drama she has done where the protagonists are not full-fledged adults. I think her narrative thrust and her verbal ticks and character beats work best when she is writing grown-up people. Teen drama is not her forte, to put it mildly. The setting of The Heirs has neither life and death stakes sageuk/fantasy/adventure dramas have, nor even the emotional stakes of grown ups coping with really grown-up issues that have more heft (in City Hall for example, it is about fight against corruption, Kim Sun Ah being able to achieve her ideals and Cha Seung Won saving his soul but even in such a light trifle of a drama like AGD, it’s pretty clear, for example, that at 40-something, it’s Jang Dong Gun’s last chance for true love and lasting relationship.) I am not saying a story about teenagers in a non-period or non-fantasy setting cannot have real genuine stakes, but The Heirs does not manage to create them, or convey it effectively. Some of it is that my sympathy for rich brats is limited, but even when there is genuine issues like with Kim Woo Bin being abused by his father, it’s really not handled in any way that’s likely to engender interest and investment...
OK, I have no idea where this rant is going so I am going to stop...

tbh I kind of liked that Eugene&AeSin never kiss & barely touch. All those little moments/gestures somehow feel so much more intimate(the shy smiles, hand closeups, letter writing<3) the scene of him putting on her shoe beats any kiss for me, it's so romantic & full of meaning. plus I can't see Eugene making the first step.Dude is such a unfortunate mix of insecurities, being a total gentleman & not seeming to be very comfortable/used to physical contact. If only AeSin learned abt kiss at school XD)
Sorry, I am still a basic bitch and wanted them to kiss XD The actors had too much chemistry and there were too many scenes where I know they were teasing one.

Tag Game
I was tagged by both @stackcats and @this-lioness on this one.
top 3 ships: Oh geeze.  Is this like recent ships or all time ships?  Of recent ships, I’d say:
Stormpilot -- Disney is a jerk for not allowing Finn and Poe the relationship that was so clearly there and totally awesome.
Yuri and Victor --  Yuri on Ice! holds a special place in my heart for a number of reasons and so does this ship.
Go Ae-shin and Eugene Choi -- Mr. Sunshine is a kdrama like none other. The romantic leads put your heart through the wringer, but it’s worth it, even with the ending.
Classic ships:
Sam Carter and Jack O’Neil -- I wrote so so so much SG-1 fanfic, an unhealthy amount of SG-1 fanfic, an embarrassing amount of SG-1 fanfic back in the day so I feel like I should bring these two up as a “classic ship” just out of sheer volume of words I devoted to them.
Jeffery Sinclair and Michael Garibaldi -- the first slashfic (is that term even relevant anymore?) I ever read was between these two, and it was an eyeopener because it was how I felt about their relationship, but hadn’t the vocabulary at the time to define. Babylon 5 had some fantastic ships (Susan and Talia, and then later Susan and Marcus; John and Delenn; Jeffery and Catherine; etc).
Beverly Crusher and Jean Luc Picard --  there’s been a number of Star Trek ships I’ve had over the years, but this was the first one for me in my formative years and subject of more than a few horrific middle school fanfics lol.
last movie: Seen in the theater? Spider-man: Far From Home maybe?  It’s been awhile. I think the last one I streamed was Train to Busan on Netflix.
lipstick or chapstick: Chapstick, especially in winter. A tube of Carmex is never out of reach.
last song: Eh...I don’t listen to much music. I did enjoy The Manadlorian’s soundtrack though. The music for these past two seasons of Doctor Who has been great too -- atmospherically spooky.
reading: Nothing.  I haven’t even read fanfic in awhile -- waiting for a certain somebody to update her Stardew Valley fic... *cough*  :D (srsly though, no pressure, sug)  Although I am thinking about dipping my toes in over at AO3 to see if there’s any Qrow x Clover fic that ignores canon (because it totally should and I need a soul soothe on that one)....
watching: I realized I never finished watching the last few episodes of season 1 of Star Trek Discovery, so I remedied that and am now watching season 2. I’m enjoying the second season more than the first so far.
totally spies or the powerpuff girls: I watched the original Powerpuff Girls as it was airing (I still have my Bubbles key ring somewhere). I can’t remember what I watched as a kid (I’m 43 -- in Tumblr years I’m considered ancient lol). I’m totally digging the She-Ra reboot though.
Tagging: @loversandantiheroes (if you haven’t been tagged already) and anyone else who wants to do it.
