Oh my god EXACTLY!
I didn't really elaborate in my first post because otherwise I would have written a full-on essay but yeah, he doesn't drink alone. He might be physically alone but mentally he's with Yeo Jin. And he's drinking WITH her.
It's the fact that he was walking almost aimlessly and ended up at the pojangmacha, at THEIR place. It's the fact that he calls her with nothing more than an excuse that is quickly resolved because he NEEDED her, he WANTED to hear her, to hear someone he trusts and respects in a moment he feels lost.
It's the fact it happens at night, a literary trope that makes this setting a place where masks fall and truths are spoken, where the characters are their truest self. And that's what Simok decides to do at his truest self.
It's the fact he seeks comfort from her but also from a place that reminds him of her, a place where he can eat (when he usually never eats/gets interrupted except when he's with Yeo Jin).
Anyway, this scene is one of the best fucking scene of season 1 and the whole show for that matter for all of these reasons and so many more (colours, cinematography and so on)
The scene… THE SCENE….
The scene when Shi mok calls Yeo Jin and she’s asleep and he’s at the pojangmacha, THEIR place. And suddenly the conversation derives to more personal topics and just… When Yeo Jin asks him to tell her if the pain comes back…. The way her voice cracks a little at the mere idea the pain might come back and at the mere idea of what he probably has gone through, alone, for most of his life, and the way he closes his eyes for a minute because… no one, NO ONE, has ever asked him if he’s okay and to tell them if he’s not, if he’s hurting.
The way their voices are so soft, raw, and a tad lower than usual…
The way they both try to comfort one another that what happened is not their fault…
The way he’s almost crying, as if he’s trying to hold back tears…
And the way, suddenly, Goodbye by Peter Han plays while, up until then, it had been played EXCLUSIVELY for scenes concerning Eun Soo (and her relationship with Shi Mok with all the romantic tropes on her part)… The subtle shift in Yeo Jin and Shi Mok’s relationship.

The way season 1 is all about Han Yeo Jin saving Hwang Shi Mok and season 2 is all about Hwang Shi Mok saving Han Yeo Jin....

Even though actors like me receive applause from a lot of people, it’s impossible for everyone to like my acting. I mean, I put a lot of effort into thinking about my characters and I perform without regrets but there still could be people [who don’t like it] because everyone has their preference and their own way of thinking. [...] As long as I’m not personnally ashamed of it I will comfort myself by saying “Okay it’s done. Let’s be satisfied with this.” [...] Back when I was a perfectionist, I couldn’t think that way. If I heard someone, whoever it was, say that I couldn’t act, I would feel really depressed, thinking why I couldn’t do it. [...] Now that I now I can never be the best, I think it’s worthwhile to do my best. - [x]
