Semi-regularly, I see people saying that Lio (or sometimes Galo) should have killed Kray in Promare, and I just can't vibe with that. I'm glad it didn't go there.
I know that stories (especially action-oriented ones) tend to go for the immediate satisfaction of revenge-style justice, but I think if someone had killed Kray, it would have been like the story was saying his worldview was the correct one. "I believe I'm in the right, so I can decide who lives and who dies and if I choose to kill someone it's justified." And I always appreciate it when a story rejects that point of view entirely. Hell, that concept is even touched on in the lyrics to NEXUS: Are we gonna get to choose/who will live and who will die?
And the movie answers that question when Galo says that he'll even save Kray, too. I love how personally offended Kray looks at that. When you're that certain that humanity is self-serving and corrupt, and everyone else is just as bad as you are, seeing someone flat out reject that point of view is a real slap in the face.
(As an aside, my gay heart melts that the order he promised to save things in was 1. Lio, 2. The Entire Earth, 3. And You Too, I Guess.)
I think the story's message is better for the good guys not killing the villain, even if as an audience we think he would deserve it.

Name Glossary - Please Tell Me! Galko-chan
Almos all of the characters in Please Tell Me! Galko-chan have nicknames based on one of their primary characteristics, and combined with a common Japanese name ending such as ''Ko'' or ''mi'' for girls, and ''o'' or ''ta'' for boys. Let's take a closer look!
Galko: from ''gyaru'' or ''Gal'', which is Galko's style. Gal subcultures is mostly associated with Japanese girls in their teens to late twenties: they're very fashionable, aften tan and/or blonde, and use a lot of unique slang. Galko also has a special sound effect in Japanese writeen as ''gyarun'' or ''gyarurun'' (which is punning off of ''gyaru''), so this is often translated as variations of ''galoing''.
Otako: from ''otaku'', a geek.
Ojou: literally ''young lady'', often describing a rich or especially proper girl.
Charao: from ''charai'', meaning flashy or superficial.
Otao: again from ''otaku'', a geek.
Supoo: from ''supootsu'', i.e. sports.
Iincho: from ''iinchou'', committee chairman/Class Rep.
Kuseta: from ''kuse'', curly or messy (as in his hair).
Tsunno: from ''tsundere'', a girl who outwardly mean to someone but secretly like them.
Kibami: from ''kibe'', fangs.
Agemi: from ''age'', literally ''up'' or ''going up'', which frequently appears in Gal girl slang like ''ageage'' (excitement/high spirit) or ''agepoyo'' (fun/happiness).
Yabana: from ''yabai'', another exclamation popular with Gals, which can mean ''awful'' or ''awesome'', depending on the context.
Okako: from ''okaruto'', occult.
Metako: from ''metal''.
Fushigi-chan: ''fushigi'' means a mystery, or as an adjective, ''strange'' or ''mysterious''.
Nikuko: from ''niku'', which means ''meat''.

2. Is there a work of the past year you could see yourself revisiting in the future and redoing/changing/reinterpreting?
Hmm, honestly, I try to make it a point not to go and change my old stuff. I mean, if I didn't I feel like I would start endlessly editing my old stuff, especially the early fics, and I don't think that's really fair for me or my readers. At most, I did have some ideas for Galo PoV stuff in The First Day of the Rest Of Your Life but even that I can't imagine being a fully fleshed-out companion fic, more just little snippets to post here and there.
8. Have you gotten any feedback this year that has stuck with you? Is there anyone you would like to say thank you to?
Man, it's so hard to choose one thing. I cherish every comment so much, and I can't possibly thank every single person. Any time someone says that something I wrote made them cry, or made them think, I dunno, that's just beautiful man.
11. What are your creator's new year's resolutions? Do you have any?
Well. To write more, for sure. Maybe write another long fic. I have several ideas I want to actually turn into something, for AA and for ToV (I will go back to the other long fic someday though I SWEAR)
25. Can you share one to five favourites of the works you made last year?
Okay, so longfics are always my pride and joy, and finishing up The First Day of the Rest of Your Life is no exception. God I had so much fun writing it. I put my fucking soul into that one.
I also really loved the fics I wrote for Zines. The siblings one, the writers one, and the as-yet-unpublished PLvsAA one. They're all so good, but most of them are Gen fics so I imagine they won't get a lot of views. Especially that last one. No one else on planet earth loves Jean Greyerl as much as I do and that's a fact.
And lastly, I do truly think some of my best writing ever was in Trust Fall. I am so proud of that one. That's another one not a ton of people will read, since not a ton of you have played Octopath Traveler II, but I really love the writing I did for that one.

one of the funniest things i ever saw someone say abt the promare soundtrack was when they were trying to describe their Interpretation of what they had decided was the single promare song that Wasn’t Gay and they were like ‘well gallant ones is a fight song so it can’t be a love song’ like it can’t be both (esp in this case it definitely is both. hello) especially in the action movie where the romance is like galo and lios love in the face of oppression it makes sense w the whole like their gay love is to be Fought For thing like this isn’t hard they TALK abt this stuff yknow. also this is literally the song they use for when galo and lio kiss

Meet Galo ! The character I usually envision when I play any sort of dating sim or graphic novel game. He spawned in my head the first time I played BTD2 and has. not. left. I haven't drawn him until now, so a full body ref will most likely come soon ! Feel free to read more under the cut for ramblings about him !
Galo is a rabbit beastkin, but more specifically a lionhead rabbit ! He has a lot of rabbit like qualities, especially ones pertaining to his breed. This includes long, messy hair and facial hair. He doesn't like how his hair gets in his face, but he's too lazy to go out and get it cut so he usually puts it in a low ponytail. Galo has deep masculinity issues where he believes he isn't man enough due to being a rabbit. So, in turn, he despises the fact that he's a rabbit. He very rarely bathes- It's the incel in him. He despises taking showers so much, but he's also embarrassed of the fact that he doesn't shower. So whenever he goes out, he always makes sure to shower. However, this embarrassment doesn't make him shower regularly. The only part of himself that's ever cleaned regularly is his face- Due to his breed of rabbit, he's able to grow lots of facial hair really fast. But he doesn't like having facial hair, so he shaves whenever it begins to grow in.
His natural hair color is a deep brown getting closer to black, but he tends to dye it different shades of blue. Reddit incel ! Little shit has a terrible case of incel disease. He's been both a discord moderator and a discord kitten. It's terrible. As said before, he has a deep-rooted issue with his own masculinity. He feels like he isn't man enough but he also hasn't bothered to try and present himself more masculine. It's just constant complaining online about how he wished he was more of a man and how being a rabbit makes him more weak and docile. More feminine. He'd much prefer to be only human. But if he had to be beast kin, he'd like to be a wolf or something much cooler, thank you very much ! Galo is meant to be a character that represents the MC, so while he has his own personality, beliefs, and ideals- He'd fit into just about any mold you'd need for an MC. In the case of both BTD games as well as TPOF, he can fit into both roles- Victim and aggressor. He is Ren route specific ! Of course lmao Because he can be both a victim and aggressor, I tend to think about him in both circumstances for the MC. He could experience being Rens pet, or he could experience having Ren as a pet. He could also be killed by Ren or kill Ren himself. Its very much varied. If I had to pick the endings that would for him, it would be these: "You helped Ren", "You let Ren take care of you", "It's not so bad", and "You'll replace Ren's scars." Although, nothing is set and stone specific. Literally anything works for Galo. Galo can so easily fall into the role of a victim because he's pathetic. It genuinely doesn't take much to just. Make him a victim, mentally or physically. But he can fall into the role of an aggressor if pushed hard enough- He'll snap eventually and attempt to gain control of a situation. Funnily enough, no matter what ending, Galo begins to bathe himself daily after he starts living with Ren. His terrible hygiene is still a deep insecurity and embarrassment, so he gets better about it when he's forced to subject it to someone else. Some smaller things: Galo's full name is Galo Pérez. He's Mexican but grew up in America- He's bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish, but he mainly speaks English unless speaking with family. He/Him and bisexual with a heavy female preference. He's about 5'8 (something he's terribly proud of.) Existing within my own little ocverse, he continues to be a grimy little incel. He doesn't make any friends nor does he end up getting a partner. It's a sad and terrible life, but for the most part he's accepted it. I have so much more about him that I can't fit in this post, so this is about it for now,,,

Figures. Kray was a touchy subject for a lot of people, especially with all the dirt being dug up... somehow, despite seeing Kray Foresight at his worst, they kept finding out more stuff he had kept hidden, more people whose lives he had ruined, more people whose lives he had taken... there was a time Galo looked happily, expectantly at any television screen that had his face, but now, all Galo wanted to do was run. He didn't know he had that same effect on someone else, too.
“Kray said a lot of things,” Galo mumbled. “But, that's kinda' what I wanted to ask you about. I know lots about the Burnish -- not more than Lio, but I still know a lot! -- but before a few weeks ago, I'd never heard of a Freezish. Are yooou... uh, were you like, a Burnish too, just under a new name or somethin'?”
Freezish... Burnish... Burnish had weird little flame aliens, so that must mean...
“Did you have super cool ice powers?! Aw man, it would'a been awesome to see them play out in action! Hey, maybe you can give me a play by play sometime and I can try 'n reenact it with Matoi!”
Patting Matoi's exterior, Galo smiled proudly. Sure, she was still a little beat-up, but Galo had ... well, not had, rebuilding the city took a lotta work and all, but he could spare some free time knocking out all the bumps and scratches!
“It's fine if you don't wanna' talk about it. I just wanted to get to know you a little better, y'know? We're all gonna' be teaming up on this project, and I like to get to know my teammates! It took months to get Remi to open up, but now it's like I've known him forever!”
A beat of silence.
“Soo... what're some things you like?”

O, T
O - Choose a song at random, which ship or character does it remind you of
Unbelievable, shuffle picked Inferno from the anime movie Promare, which is already the theme for the main character Galo and evocative of the main ship by association. Thanks for letting me phone that one in I guess, shuffle.
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending, about anything at all (gender identity, sexual or romantic orientation, extended family, sexual preferences like top/bottom/switch, relationship with poetry, seriously anything)
Yeeees? While I have the occasional long-running (and inadvisable) writing idea, I tend to skew towards oneshots and try to stay flexible on that front, but I definitely end up with some that stick.
A more recent(...ish) one would be from RWBY--Ozpin is an amalgam of centuries of reincarnation/soul merges and, especially since this is revealed after he dies and merges with/mentors his subsequent incarnation, for a veeery long time it was unclear whether Ozpin himself was ultimately more the centuries-old immortal, the previous incarnation, or a true merge between both. I think canon’s kind of settled on that final one at this point? But I always preferred to interpret him as the incarnation first. Because hijacking someone else’s life like that is messed up enough already without the new guy being the one permanently in the diver’s seat.

Spoiler-Free Review: I'll admit I'm really, REALLY late getting onto this particular boat. This book was originally published in 2010, when Visprint was still going strong, but thankfully Avenida Books has picked up Visprint's banner so it's still in circulation (publishing in the Philippines is ROUGH y'all). I picked this up is because I found out on Twitter that there's going to be a movie adaptation out on Amazon Prime, and I got curious.
Now, full disclosure: as a result of my upbringing, I'm AWFUL at reading Tagalog. I was raised in an English-engaged household and struggled with Tagalog all throughout my years in school, including while at uni (during which I improved the most, but not nearly as much as I'd like). Matter of fact I STILL struggle with it, especially if it's the literary Tagalog most often used by the literary luminaries who write in the language. Fortunately, Ong writes in a more colloquial Tagalog, which is a bit easier for me to grasp - especially now that I'm working and use the language a lot more.
This novel is the diary of a college student named Gilberto "Galo" Manansala, who started writing it as part of his requirements at school, but keeps writing in it as a way to record the events of his life and the way he feels about them. The first half of the book focuses primarily on that, and depicts not just the typical college drama involving teachers, friends, and romantic partners, but also what it means to be someone from the province who's come to Manila for a college education, and is relying on other members of his family to support them. When that support falls through, though, Galo takes certain extreme actions, and winds up having to go back home to the province to avoid the consequences.
The second half of the novel takes place in Galo's home province, where he goes back to see his ailing grandmother and (ostensibly) take care of her. While there, he finds out that something ain't quite right with Grandma, and with the town as a whole. This is where the horror actually comes in, as Galo learns about what his grandmother's been up to, what's happened since he left the town to go to Manila for his education - and what that knowledge does to him by the end.
Now, while the first half of the novel is pretty interesting because of the way it depicts life for the average college student, I did kind of wish it had been shorter? I understand that the author was trying to paint out Galo's life to give the reader a full picture of who he is as a person, and the events depicted and hinted at in the first half do come into play in the second half, but I did move through that first half wondering when the horror would finally come in.
Fortunately, once that second half begins the book really does live up to the horror genre, and it is horror in a specifically Filipino way that ensured I'd read this only in broad daylight. The tropes will be familiar to Filipinos who grew up watching the Shake Rattle 'n Roll movies, the old Magandang Gabi Bayan Undas specials, and inhaled Psicom's True Philippine Ghost Stories collections: the old provincial mansion, the isolated town, the unique religious practices-- All of those things will resonate with a creepy familiarity with Filipino readers. The themes, too, will have a familiar resonance for that same set of readers who engaged with the aforementioned media before; I don't think Ong is treading much new ground in that regard, since the theme of "Your sins come back to haunt you eventually" is a common one. But the execution is pretty enjoyable, and that ending is sure to send a tingle up the reader's spine.
So overall, Ang Mga Kaibigan ni Mama Susan was a pretty fun, fast, and undoubtedly spooky read - but largely in the second half. The first half is a bit of a slog, and I can imagine some readers just skimming their way through it to get to the creepy bits - something which I think they'd be justified in doing, as it does run a bit overlong for my tastes. But what happens in that first half has implications for what happens in the second half, so it helps to pay attention in order to see the full scope of the horror that finally descends on Galo by the end.
Rating: three diaries

And I Won’t Feel a thing
Thiya Prometh is not the jealous type.
Jealousy would imply that she resents those around her that have what she doesn’t, which is simply not true.
She was genuinely happy to see Galo and Lio’s relationship blossom over time. They were the most compassionate, kind-hearted people she’d ever met, and she firmly believed they deserved each other.
She was also genuinely happy that each of them had their own group of loved ones to rely on; Galo with his Burning Rescue team (and the majority of Promepolis), and Lio with his former generals (and the majority of the Burnish).
Even so, Thiya still felt the occasional stab in her chest whenever she caught sight of them sharing a tender moment, whether if it was with each other or their people.
Galo letting Lucia sit on his shoulders so she could reach the top of the Matoi Tech for repairs?
stab
Lio insisting to Guiera and Meis that he didn’t need a break even though he was struggling not to let out a jaw cracking yawn? Only to have Meis toss him over his shoulder and carry him off to bed, while Guiera fetched some blankets and pillows from the spare closet? (Making sure to throw her a disdainful glare when he caught her watching, as if to say, “This is your fault.”)
STAB
Galo and Lio playing with a bunch of Burnish orphans like they were their own kids? The children climbing all over Galo like a living, breathing jungle gym? Lio cooing at and bandaging the skinned knee of one of the younger ones? (All the pairs of frightened eyes staring at her when they thought she wasn’t looking and hushed whispers of the word “monster”.)
STAB-STAB-STAB
She hated it.
She hated it with every fiber of her being.
Not the moments themselves, no. She’d treasure those memories until the day she died (even if she’d only been an outsider looking in).
She hated the pain; the pure, soul-shredding yearning that would course through her, consuming all her thoughts and making her want to scream her lungs out. Sometimes it would get so bad, she’d sit in her room and grip her own arms tight enough to bruise, ice growing from her fingernails and piercing her skin. She’d grit her teeth and hiss to herself,
“This. This is what you deserve. Not that. You deserve this feeling. You deserve this pain.”
Thiya may have had a family and loved ones once before, but they were long gone now. She would never again have someone to help her, look after her, or comfort her when she was hurting.
Bad guys like her don’t deserve love.
Especially not from people like Galo and Lio.
(No matter how much she craved it.)

whatever you wanna talk about get as long as you want i want to see it !!
I want more details on oumota's relationship development too !
rubbing hands together...you are treating me thats for sure HEHE
i'll stick it under a read more so people that arent interested wont have to scroll a bunch to get past it!! THANK YOU FOR ASKING THOUGH i love talking about my AUs so much and it makes me so excited knowing other people wanna hear about it :sob:
for kaito and ouma's relationship, it is absolutely not friendly at first. kaito sees ouma as nothing but someone who wants to watch the world burn (ha) and ouma thinks kaito is naïve and knows very little about how the world works, which is a lot like galo and lio but thats kind of inevitable HAHA at first their rivalry is very one sided because of how ouma feels, kaito is just another annoying, close-minded firefighter. but when he catches kaito's spark of fire, he picks on him a LOT trying to get him to cough up his secret and face his hypocrisy and kaito's like "IDK WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!" and for the most part he's kind of telling the truth since he's in denial about the whole thing. this isn't set in stone or very fleshed out but there'll probably be a scene in which kaito gets too ambitious in an ambush and gets himself captured since hes a and wants to be a sole hero, and ouma corners him and manages to get him to spark, which forces kaito to admit and accept that he's a burnish ouma doesn't think much of it at first, he's just satisfied to rub a firefighter's face in the dirt for once, especially one that's been so righteous all that time but. he realizes very quickly that once someone becomes a burnish there's no going back and that he can't exactly send kaito back knowing he'll get turned in for experiments and that no matter how annoying, he's gotta support other burnish. so he invites a very confused and lost kaito to their camp and comes to realize that kaito was never really a bad person but that he just had his head shoved very far up his ass about his own beliefs. even in their spars, kaito never had a problem with burnish themselves but that he just hadn't understood them very well (like galo). so ouma starts to treat him like he would any of his other subordinates and even though kaito is torn, it kind of helps lift his spirits and feel more accepted and once he comes to terms with everything he believed in becoming a lie, he's happy to work together to bring justice to everything (kinda like their plan in chapter 5...and the entire plot of promare tbh) so that pretty much sums up the details of it, i think they'd get very fond of each other and each one would kind of be like "how did i get this far without you in my life" mindset, like theyre just two puzzle pieces that had been lost all that time and now that they're together everything just makes sense. even if ouma wants to see the world burn. even if kaito is annoying. they realize they're not very different and that they work super well together as for anything i just wanna talk about, i'm kind of excited to incorporate maki!! i think she'd be a burnish, but she's a rogue because she doesn't trust other groups or think that revolution will change anything; she thinks they'd be safer if they separated from the non-burnish entirely because they can never change their minds (speaking from a place of fear). she still grew up in an orphanage, but had to fend for herself after she discovered she was a burnish and got shunned. i'd think she probably found some kind of clan of her own, probably burnish assassins, but she ran away because she thought it would hurt too much if someone she had cared about and got attached to got hurt since she believes its inevitable for burnish to get captured. so she stays isolated and works alone, only using her fire to defend herself i'll leave a list of my assignments and short ideas if i have them for everyone else!! kaede: burning rescue; their leader when kaito isn't talking over her and jumping head first into danger shuichi: burning rescue; their man of reason. same role as his detective work, essentially. he helps track burnish down during attacks gonta: burning rescue; he's their powerhouse and swears with his life to protect others miu: burning rescue; she basically takes lucia's mad scientist role and crafts up all the mech ! tenko: im not sure where i want her to reside on this, i think she'd work well with burning rescue. i definitely don't think she's a burnish though himiko: not sure with
her either, i think she'd be a non-burnish civilian rantaro: burnish civilian; hes very calm and doesnt really feel a need to use his powers or anything, but his sisters were captured and to him he's not sure why they had been taken or where they'd been taken to and the rage and confusion at losing them was what his abilities were born from. he doesn't trust the BR even though theyre very forgiving and determined to rescue everybody regardless of what they are, so he stays quiet about him being a burnish and wanting to rescue his sisters angie: burnish. i have no idea how she comes into play but she definitely recruits other burnish into her beliefs and it drives ouma nuts since he runs his own organization and her motives are entirely for personal gain kiyo: I HAVE NO IDEA. kirumi: no idea for her either, i figured she might work for the higher ups and even though it doesn't align with her beliefs, she's more dedicated to doing her job and is blinded by that.
tsumugi: right hand man of the higher ups. i think junko would probably fill kray's position but i have no idea how to flesh all that out rn HAHA ryoma: burnish; same backstory as his canon one, except he retaliated to the violence against his loved ones when his abilities appeared. he was immediately captured and accepted his life in confinement, even when faced with rescue/reluctant to accept escape
kiibo: I HAVE NO IDEA cuz hes already mech, i've leaned towards making him part of BR as one of miu's projects though

Was thinking about soulmate AUs and how I’d do one for Promare. I think it’d be cool if maybe when a Burnish first burns, they get one single burn scar with their soulmate’s name or symbol or whatever. Obvi you’d have to call them “twin flames” instead of soulmates
I also like the idea of it saying a place instead of a name, like the location of your soulmate at the time of your burning. It would branch off the (forced) nomadic nature of a lot of the Burnish that they would journey to find someone or some place that would make them safer. Like the Promare are trying to protect their hosts by bringing them to someone who would help them burn stronger
I think it’d normally be Burnish soulmates with other Burnish. (Which is why, if Lio gets his and it’s renowned firefighter Galo Thymos, it would be a bit scandalous—especially since Galo wouldn’t have a soulmate designation as a non-Burnish)

Hey how do you think that would be a reverse version of GW? Like, instead of Galo getting the whumpees, the seven of them somehow, through a legal technicality, get a Galo that was Bethany's slave? How donyou think they'd all be, in this situation?
I would like to clarify that Galo and Bethany are NOT related in this version.
--
"... an old paramour," Greyson stated, hedging an explanation. Bethany had been, well, significantly too old for him, at the time. But he'd liked that.
Even so, he wasn't exactly chomping at the bit to disclose his past questionable relationships with his housemates.
"And what did she leave you, exactly?" Evan asked, wearing his joggers and leaning against the doorframe, Lilah dressed similarly and walking past him with a deep pull from her water bottle.
"Your guess is as good as mine," Greyson said, passing him the letter. Lilah propped her arm up on his shoulder, only to be dislodged as he propped his arm up on her head. The two leaned in and read the letter together, their faces screwing up at almost the exact same moment.
"Well that's cryptic," Lilah said, taking the page from Evan's hand and flipping it over, checking the blank back. She handed it back to Greyson, who nodded his assent.
"So my bet's on bird," Evan said, ganking Lilah's water bottle and finishing it off.
"Evan!" Nyla called from the other side of the house, "Have you sent me your portion of the mortgage yet?"
"I thought the point of buying a house was to get away from landlords," Evan muttered to Lilah, who snorted.
"Evan!"
"Doing that now!"
Sasha entered and gently shoed the athletes out. "I n-need to get st-started on dinner."
She placed her hand on Greyson's shoulder. "It'll be fine. Maybe it's j-just a dog?"
Greyson shrugged, sighing. He wondered why he'd even been IN the woman's will at all.
"N-now move. I'm cooking."
Greyson smiled playfully back, bumping his hip to Sasha's, and left. He found Nyla rifling through the rest of the mail.
"Are you sure that's all they sent you?"
"Unfortunately."
Nyla huffed, letting the letters smack against her skirt. "Why couldn't they have had a lawyer write to us or something? Anything to save a dime, and I have no idea what I'm supposed to be preparing for!"
"We can run to a pet store the day it gets here. If not, a night in the garage won't kill it," Greyson assured. Also, wasn't HE supposed to be the one preparing? He set his hand on her shoulder. "You worry too much."
"I worry exactly the right amount, thank you," Nyla said, whapping him with the mail. As she walked towards her office, she called out, "Lilah, you'd better have put those in the hamper!"
"Does it bring you joy to endlessly nag?!"
"I live in a house with four other people!"
Greyson chuckled. He was also probably overthinking this. It was weird, and definitely unexpected, but it would all be fine.
--
That was a human person.
Tall, with choppily short hair, kneeling in their front entryway between Evan and Lilah's running shoes and the narrow side table Nyla used for mail and key rings.
That was a human person.
They all looked to each other, wondering what to do, and this was technically Greyson's problem, which meant he was the one who should do something about this. Why. Why this. Why him?!?!
When it became undeniably obvious that the other four were waiting on him and the silence was stiflingly uncomfortable, Greyson cleared his throat and stepped forward.
"Hello?" He hadn't meant for it to sound like a question.
"Hello master," the slave returned, skirt fisted with shaking knuckles.
"I am Greyson," he cleared his throat again, "What's your name?"
"...Galo."
Oh Greyson was so out of his depth.
"So uh, you're Bethany's pet? Ex pet?" Evan asked, and Greyson was relieved someone else had said something.
"Yes master."
"This is weird," Lilah stated, shifting anxiously from foot to foot with jittery energy. "This is fucking weird. Why did your ex girlfriend give you a slave? Why were you dating someone who likes slavery?! Greyson what the fuck!"
"Okay deep breaths!" Nyla ordered loudly, everyone complying instantly. "This is. Unexpected," she agreed. "But let's not get out of hand. Galo, sweetie, would you please stand up?"
"Yes mistress."
"You don't need to call anyone master or mistress."
"Ma'am?"
"Ma'am is fine. Let's get you settled in. You can probably stay in Sasha's room at the moment, who'll sleep with me?"
Sasha nodded.
"Okay, good. Are these all of your belongings?" Nyla asked, gesturing at Galo's duffle bag, who nodded again.
"Okay, great. This way."
Greyson was so, so grateful to know Nyla. So glad she was in his life. Her competence was unparalleled.
"I-I'm going to make d-dinner."
--
Galo followed his mistress, who he wasn't going to call mistress, to a baby blue room with impressionist paintings hung from the walls, leaned up against each other, stacked against the desk and dresser. Canvases were just about everywhere, but it didn't seem messy. Just full.
"This is Sasha's room but you can stay here until we figure all this out. Oh! My name is Nyla, sorry, I spaced on that, we'll get you introduced to everyone properly once... once we settle down."
Galo bowed, hand crossed over his chest.
"This is just a little unexpected. We hadn't known you were--human."
"I'm sorry, ma'am."
"No, no, no need to apologize. Just some information lost in the pipeline. Why don't you settle in and... we'll chat more at supper."
His mistress left, closing the door behind her, and Galo was left standing in the center of a room that wasn't his.
He took a shaky breath. Well. They'd accepted his name, at least, which was nice. Maybe someday he'd tell them about... him being a man. Maybe. Definitely going to wait and see on that one, he wasn't interested in a repeat of what had happened last time he'd told an owner he was a man.
There were five of them.
Galo sank to his knees, duffle bag hitting the floor, his hands covering his mouth. There were five of them.
He was a fairly gigantic failure at keeping one owner off his back, how was he ever going to please five?!? And the little one had been so angry with his presence--he would have to show his gratitude to Mistress Nyla, later, for stepping in.
Oh god, what would they use him for? This house was no estate--maybe they would just have him clean. Yeah, maybe, maybe he could just clean for them and stick to the shadows and he would be ignored.
A hysteric peal of laughter bubbled out of him.
Ignored.
Yeah, right.
--
But for some reason, that... did seem to be the case. They ignored him. Mistress Sasha and Master Evan especially seemed to have no idea what to do with him, and would awkwardly prompt him to leave them alone if he guessed their routines wrong and ended up in the same room as them.
Master Greyson made earnest attempts to speak with him, which Galo responded to as best he could. But the conversations were stilted things. The most successful ones hinged around Mistress Bethany, and Galo always found himself stressed and exhausted after talking about her.
Mistress Lilah seemed to find him a curiosity, asking him questions and prodding him into helping her with her "Influencer Gig," which mostly involved holding light sources or cameras for her. She would occasionally do up Galo's hair and makeup, and Galo tried very, very hard not to show how miserable that made him. To smile and be grateful and not waste her product and time with babyish tears.
Mistress Nyla was his favorite. She had him help with the household chores and spoke kindly to him. She would praise and sometimes touch him. Conversations with her were... trickier, though.
Mistress Nyla has a very good memory. She would ask questions, know things he'd told Master Greyson or Mistress Lilah, gently pull his life's story from him. She would sometimes make him ask uncomfortable questions about himself, too, about his place as a slave, which--he knew better. He knew better!
She would stop, when he started shaking, though. Ask him to please go clean the kitchen or bathroom or fold laundry. It made him feel weak. A useless, manipulative slave who cried to get out of situations he didn't like.
"It's okay, Galo," she sometimes murmured, petting his hair and letting him kneel at her feet with his head in her lap. "You're being good for us. It's alright sweetie."
--
Master Evan didn't like talking to Galo. So he knew better. But one day, a couple friends of Master Evan's had come and gone, and one of them--
Not that Galo wanted to assume, or presume, but she'd. She had looked.
"Yeah, she's trans," Master Evan confirmed, looking desperately uncomfortable. Galo would find a way to apologize later. He just. He had to. He.
"And that's okay?" he blurted gracelessly, instinctively flinching back for two reasons.
"Yeah? I mean, yes, absolutely, I respect and support her 100%."
Galo fidgeted with his skirt, something Mistress Bethany had bought that he wanted little more than to burn.
"Are... do you, wanna tell me something?" Master Evan asked, also not making eye contact. "Or, maybe tell Nyla something, since I dunno if I'm really the guy to, uh." He gestured at himself and Galo bit his lip.
"The others are also, okay with, uh?"
"Being trans. Yes. It's not bad... bro? We're all chill and respectful here. Oh you know Sasha? Sasha's like, super smart, and knows all about this stuff, she could talk to you about this?"
"Yes sir," Galo said, knowing he'd overstayed his welcome the moment he'd opened his mouth.
"Cool. Chill. Yeah. Okay then," Master Evan said, and left the room quickly.
--
That night Galo had found a pair of Master Evan's sweatpants and a couple of old t-shirts on his bed.
--
The next time Lilah pulled Galo to help with her Influencer Gig, she'd done his makeup and hair and he had cried, to see a man who looked like him staring back from the mirror.
--
Mistress Nyla took him shopping. She held his hand, both literally and metaphorically, with increasing frequency as he started to transition and actually began to feel like this new house was his home. That these people weren't going to hurt him, that they maybe even liked him. Almost.
--
Mistress Sasha had him help her move her remaining belongings from the blue room. His room. They were, officially and permanently, making her old room his. Her paintings were either hung up throughout the rest of the house or set into storage in the garage. He helped her carry whatever else was left into Mistress Nyla's--now hers and Mistress Sasha's--room and organize so Mistress Nyla didn't work herself into a fit over the clutter.
"Thank you," he said quietly, crouched in front of the dresser and slipping some of Mistress Sasha's less-used attire into the drawers.
"Hm?"
"For, giving me your space, ma'am." For everything. For all of it.
Mistress Sasha crossed over to him and sat in the floor where he was, opening her arms to him. He leaned in, slowly wrapping his arms around her and pressing his face to her shoulder.
"You're part of the f-family now," she said warmly. "Of c-course."

here’s an excerpt from the scrapped first chapter of no place for firestarters! the only issue with it is that it’s in the wrong pov—originally, i wanted to write this story as switching between lio and galo’s points of view and started out with a galo chapter, then decided to make everything in lio’s pov, rendering this chapter in its current form unusable.
anyway, here it is!
***
Galo works forty-eight hours straight after the Parnassus falls.
It’s a whirlwind. Galo barely has time to give Lio a celebratory fistbump before they leap into rescue operations. The crew splits up:  Remi, Varys, and Lucia go out into the city to do search and rescue on the crash site; Galo, Aina, Ignis, and Lio stay in the cire to get the Burnish out of the Promatech pods. They free Lio’s generals first, both of whom hug him so tightly Galo’s surprised his spine doesn’t snap, then move on from there.
Galo learns a lot of things in this process:  that the burnish all seem to know and care deeply about Lio, that the pods weren’t designed to be reopened, that even though Heris Ardebeit is helping them with the rescue effort, she still can’t see what she’d done wrong. Ignis eventually escorts her elsewhere, out of range of Lio, Galo, and Aina’s combined fury.
Though, that fury is nothing compared to the look in Lio’s eyes when they get to the first empty pod.
Galo thinks at first that someone has already emptied this one—they have civilian EMTs helping as well, spread out through the engine to cover as much ground as possible—until he sees that the arm and leg cuffs are still closed and intact. They’re thick, so it usually takes monster bolt cutters or the jaws of life to cut them, but these haven’t been touched. It doesn’t make sense, unless someone managed to slip free. Which, also difficult, since the cuffs have been tight enough that it’s hard to clip them without also cutting the person they’re trying to free.
“Did they put in empty pods?” he says, scratching the side of his head. The generator behind them sputters, echoing along with the many others in the cavernous space. “It doesn’t look like there’s anyone–“
“Stop.”
Lio’s voice is sharp, and Galo stops immediately. He sees that Lio’s looking down at the floor of the pod and—oh. Oh. There’s a pile of ash on the floor. Galo’s mind goes back to the cave, to Thyma, and oh. Shit.
“Serial numbers,” Lio barks, whirling around to where Aina’s helping a Burnish to the stairs of the scaffolding “Do the pods have them?”
Aina balks for a second [Galo would too in her position; Lio looks almost like he did with the dragon, minus the colour palette change and the flaming hair.] but she says, “I’ll ask Heris. She’s in medical, and I’m headed there anyway.”
“I d-didn’t see anything,” the Burnish says. She doesn’t look that much older than Lio, but Galo has no concept of how the Burnish age; they could be twenty, or sixty. “Sorry, boss.”
Lio’s expression immediately softens.  “It’s alright, Alexis, I wouldn’t have expected you to.”
“I want to help,” she insists. Galo notices her legs are trembling; she’s on the verge of collapsing, but she’s still giving Lio a fierce stare. “Please, I want to help–“
“You need to recover first,” Lio shuts her down. “Talk to me again when you’ve gotten some sleep and you’ve eaten something.”
Alexis gives him a noodley salute, and then Aina helps her down the stairs. Lio watches her go, then turns to the pod again. His hands clench into fists.
"Do you need me to get something to write stuff down with?" Galo asks tentatively. "If there are numbers. Or anything else?"
Lio doesn't respond for a long moment, but then he nods once, and Galo runs off.
It sucks. There's probably a stronger word for it, but Galo's brain is too foggy to come up with something more eloquent. So he just mutters, "This sucks. This fucking sucks," as he looks for a notepad.
The pods do have numbers; Heris says they're "for inventory" [Lio's jaw clenches so tightly Galo hears it click shut] and that there's "subject data for each one." Lio logs each number in a pocket-sized notebook, strings strands of caution tape that Galo found in the back of Burning Rescue's truck across the entrance to each pod, to make sure no one tries to step in.
"We need....urns, or something," Galo says to Ignis, when he's taking a water break and explaining the situation."Lio keeps talking about a mass grave, but I can tell he doesn't like it."
"I'll see what I can do," Ignis's face is unreadable behind his sunglasses. He's been assigned the leader of rescue efforts, meaning he gets to deal with all the bureaucratic and organizational stuff that makes Galo dizzy. "There are a few favours I can call in."
When he relays this to Lio, he gets back a "Nothing happens without my say-so," and then, a few minutes later, a very quiet, "Thank you."
Getting everyone out of the core takes up the first twenty-four hours, and then Galo suits up to help with search and rescue. Turns out that a giant spaceship falling out of the sky from several hundred feet can cause damage in a pretty large radius. He finds and frees people in fallen buildings, in piles of rubble, in the cavernous cracks around the Parnassus's launch site. And then there's the non-people related things:  flooding because of burst pipes all over the city, a couple fires from damaged electrical equipment, a terrifying gas leak that nearly causes an explosion by the main medical tents. There's so much damage, and so many casualties, it makes Galo's chest ache if he thinks about it too long.
He sees Lio in bursts—working to help clear ground to set up tents for displaced people and the Burnish, talking with a group of medics from the nearby hospital, giving orders to a mixed group of volunteers and Burnish who are well enough to help. Galo grins and waves to him when he can, feels like he’s walking on clouds when he gets a half-smile and a wave in return.
After two days, Ignis calls all of Burning Rescue into a tent for a meeting.
“The SAR teams from the next cities over came in about an hour ago,” He says. “That means we’re off shift. Seventy-two hour mandatory rest time. No exceptions.”
Galo would normally argue, but the exhaustion’s starting to set in, and the numbers are adding up in his head—two full days of rescue work, ten hours from Lio's dragon to the Promare going back home, a week or so in Kray's prison. Galo's not great at math, especially when he's tired, but however many hours it's been, he hasn't gotten decent rest in a while. And not getting decent rest means he’s nowhere near a decent rescuer.
The rest of the team seems to share the same sentiment. No one argues. Ignis claps his hands.
“Let’s pack up. Galo–“
Galo snaps to attention.
“Sir!”
“Bring me Fotia and his generals. I need to ask them something before we go.”
“Yessir!”
The group disperses. Galo stops by the supply tent to grab a water bottle for Lio, chugs one himself before going out to find Lio and the others.
He doesn’t have to look far. He pushes aside the tent flap and runs directly into something skinny and green. Said skinny green thing yelps and then, with a whirl of motion, Galo's on the ground, flat on his back, and there's a very pointy boot in the middle of his chest. Galo beams.
"Lio! I was looking for you!"
Lio blinks, then seems to realize what happened and leaps back. "Fuck, sorry, sorry." He's still not wearing a shirt, and he looks cold, shaking just a little.
"No, it's fine!" Galo picks himself back up, wincing a little. That didn't do any favours to his bruises from the fight with Kray, or the other fight with Kray, or the time he fell off the Parnassus, or the other time he fell off the Parnassus. [It was a significant pile of rubble.] "Didn't mean to startle you. Do you judo-flip everyone you run into?"
"No," Lio ducks his head, the faint hint of a blush high on his cheekbones. It's cute, actually. Galo's brain short-circuits for a hot sec before he remembers what he was doing.
"Oh! I got you some water," He offers the bottle. "Though, that's probably why you were going in there, huh?"
"It was," Lio takes it. "Thank you."
He tries to open it, but his hands are too shaky. Galo reaches out to help.
"Here, let me–"
"I'm perfectly capable of doing this myself," Lio replies stiffly. The blush has spread to his ears now. He's embarrassed, and Galo would find it adorable if Lio wasn't also so frustrated."
"Doesn't mean you have to," Galo says. "Plus, your hands look pretty busted."
Lio looks down at one palm, torn and blistered. His fingers tense, just a little bit, like he's expecting something to happen.  Galo realizes he's trying to call the fire to his hands, to heal the cuts. There's a flash of pain in his eyes, then he drops his hand and shoves the water bottle in Galo's direction. "Fine."
Galo cracks it open with only a little bit of fumbling. ["Wow, these caps are actually tighter than I thought." "The indomitable Galo Thymos, bested by a water bottle..." "Hey, I can do this, just give me a minute!"] Lio accepts it with another quiet thank-you.
