Case files 10.02

what I think happened in:

Case 10.02, the case of "The Trapdoor Opens" or "Releasing ancient evil – a guide."

One might say it's cheating, making a file for an event that technically isn't a case yet, in that it hasn't been noticed and recorded by OIAR. (Yet). Buuuuuuut… I don't care. :)

So. What we know: Nearly 25 years ago, in December 1999, a paranormal research facility in Manchester, Magnus Institute, burned to the ground. Reportedly, there were no survivors.

However, this might not have been true. Let's put a pin in it for the moment.

On a dark and rainy night on 09th of March 2024, two OIAR employees (on their own time) entered the ruins and conducted a very soggy and inefficient search.

The instigator of the expedition, Samama Khalid, as a child was part of some (rather shady) program for gifted children conducted here. His hazy-yet-unsettling memories of the place had resurfaced recently, and he was determined to find some answers. The resident voice of reason, Alice Dyer, assisted him by way of holding the umbrella and trying to talk him out of the whole thing.

Before she succeeded, the following things happened:

Sam found a mystery key among the debris.

Sam successfully (eventually) broke through the door to an old office (probably owned by someone named Archibald. Ha ha.)

Sam was not careful enough walking around the rotten floor, and part of it collapsed under him.

Sam did not fall into the hole, thanks to quick reflexes of Alice, who pulled him back.

Sam did, however, drop the hard-won key into the newly created hole.

Sam gave up, and agreed to leave.

And now we return to our pin. Because down below the rotten floor of the office, something did survive. It heard the key falling down. It managed to find it, and fumbled in the darkness to fit it in the lock. It unlocked the padlock. It opened a trapdoor. It breathed free air for the first time in decades.

After 25 years of imprisonment, the Ę̴̊̆R̶̗̟̝̒͛̈́̍R̵̛̯͍̠̗Ö̴̮̤́́R̴̞͍̲̞̐̓́͠ͅ ̸̡̫̣̟̏̊̇̍͜ ψ walks free.

Unnoticed by all, a lonely tape-recorder hidden somewhere in the office keeps spinning its tape.

Thus concludes the thrilling Saturday Night adventure.

I... Have Questions. Not many, but pressing ones.

The most pressing one is WHY did you crazy kids go to explore literal crumbling ruins at night? Urbexers do it for 'vibes' and 'clout' (and they don't always come back with the same number of eyes they went in with), but why would you? What made you think it was a good idea to look for clues in the feeble light of torches? Why? Just… WHY? (And why a work night? Did you take a day a night off? Are you exploring on company time? Couldn't you wait till Sunday morning?)

Another good one: does Alice really believe this is a dead end (haha) and can't be bothered with it, or is she dragging Sam away because she knows something's there, and doesn't want her baby shrimp anywhere near it?

And finally – what did they just unleash on the world? My first thought was "one of those gifted kids did not make it back home," and that's as far as I'm willing to let that thought go for the moment. Another one was: "what magical monstrosity did they create in the Artefact Research"? And another: "holy shit, it's been 25 years. How sane is ERROR after all that time (assuming it was sane to begin with)? (I know there are clues on RQ's backstage page, where the casting calls dwell, but going there feels like cheating, so I won't. Today).

ep.10.01 - dads don’t do other dads dirty

i feel like beth really got a feel for ron’s character in this episode and the last one he really is acting more like later season ron!

this episode is so chaotic and so much is happening!

glenn struggling between having fun with nick and the guilt of leaving the other dads (although he ultimately doesn’t end up caring)

and paden!!! and bullywogs!! classicsssss

paden is one of my favorite npcs i love him so much he’s sooooo goofy

LAST TWILIGHT – DIRECTOR AOF'S CAMEO

I wasn't expecting Director Aof to put in a cameo in Last Twilight (for various reasons) but it is his trademark after all, so here he is in the finale . 😍

It's the briefest of his cameos so far (see this post linked here some others) but I think it's in keeping with the messaging of his earlier ones.

In Last Twilight, Khun Noppharnach pops up as a white-gloved porter at Ep.12 [1‌/4] 10.01 offering to help guide Day to wherever he needs to go. But sadly, he's supplanted and seen off by Mhok, and hotel porter Aof then meekly makes his exit by slipping off quietly and almost unseen.

As Khun Noppharnach is expected to take a hiatus from directing duties for a spell after Last Twilight (see this post linked here), this reads like a gentle little goodbye (even if it might only be a temporary leave of absence from the director's chair – or so I'm hoping, that is). And Director Aof's cameo here is a mini-parallel to his more telling one in Moonlight Chicken (see this link here).

Just as hotel porter Aof's guiding hand has been rebuffed in Last Twilight, it appears that in real life Khun Noppharnach's directorial hand (that has leaned toward messaging more about LGBTQ+ positivity than squee-inducing BL romance) will soon be replaced by others at GMMTV, and he's moving along with the change quietly and graciously.

But goodbyes don't have to be forever, and based on his track record it's my fervent hope that we get to see Khun Noppharnach Chaiyahwimhon writing and directing even more queer-focused works (perhaps with more freedom from studio strictures) in the future. 💖

Hey, loving the podcast! Been catching up on all your episodes since I first watched supernatural at the start of this year and became obsessed. Just to say that on Spotify, the episode that's supposed to be First Captives dated 30th June 2022 (covering eps 9.11 and 9.14) is somehow actually the episode Black Reichenbach Survivor (eps 10.01 to 10.03) which is also posted again in its proper slot on 25 Aug 2022. the D-Day is approaching and I'm becoming hysterical around it. :D

I'm wondering if you would mind talking about these two moments?

When I saw the scene to which the second gif belongs I was immediately struck by how much grown Sara looks. And, most importantly, grown in a perfectly "healthy" way, under various and different sides.

In the scene of the first gif (beloging to ep. 10.01) she and Grissom were still happily married, well before the years of being apart and various incomprehensions that led to their divorce. They were still happily married, but I feel that the way Sara speaks of her marriage it's kind of embarrassed, as if she wasn't still truly believing she and Grissom finally got together, or kind of "sizing up" their marriage (I'm not sure this is the correct way to say it, hope you understand what I mean :D). I feel her final smile like the smile of a young girl who's happy and proud of herself for a gift she has received, but a young girl who is still figuring out how said gift works.

In the second gif, on the other hand, she looks completely stable, a tree rooted in the ground, in regard of what she says. Her look while she speaks, the way she says what she says...the way Jorja play it. I love everything of this particular line. While in the first gif she seems to be talking about something she had heard from someone else and now she is trying to apply it to her own life, in the second gif it's just she. What she says is what she has pondered over for a long time and resolved. Once for all. Something about which she is, now, completely fine and at ease. As if it was her own whole life speaking. It's not just being with the man you love, but finding your own balance. This, I think, is the real happiness.

I find this moment really powerful for what Sara's backstory is. I mean, it's not just sailing off into the sunset and that's it - she's happy. There has been an evolution, here, a huge development of the character, and the fact that this thing has happened to her, that she found her way to fix all her things, knowing what she has gone through throughout the years we have known her, makes me so happy I can't even explain it with words.

not that i’m at all complaining!

re: your question:

my tl;dr answer is that, to me, the difference lies in sara growing into her happiness and her willingness/ability to be open about it.

my longer, more rambling answer is after the “keep reading,” if you’re interested.

for me, i read s10!sara as being uncertain of how to present herself as a married person more so than being embarrassed of her marriage itself.

if you’ll allow me a metaphor:

it’s kind of like what happens when a kid grows up in a small community where everyone knows everyone, and then that kid reaches adulthood and strikes out on their own outside of the community for the first time (to attend school, take a job, serve in the military, travel, etc.).

at some point, they return to visit for the holidays, see their folks, and/or move back in and settle down. since they’ve been gone, the person has changed immensely, learning and growing and developing a new sense of how to relate to the world.

however, when they come back to their former community, the people who knew them while they were growing up—and especially the “old-timers” who were involved in raising them—have trouble seeing them for the person they’ve become, so for a while, there’s awkwardness; a kind of negotiation of “who i was then” vs. “who i am now,” where everyone involved has to adjust to the new status quo, including the person themselves.

to me, that’s what happens with sara in s10: she shows up in vegas, and for the first time ever, she’s not the sara everyone thought they knew for the last nine years—insomniac, workaholic, raw, high-strung, saturnine, “perpetually single” sara who spends her free nights at home curled up with a police scanner—but rather a new sara—deliriously happy, balanced, mellowed, bright-eyed, blissfully married sara who spends her free nights at home curled up with, well, grissom.

of course, people knew she was with grissom before, but that situation was different.

the thing is that even though her and grissom’s relationship became public knowledge at the end of s7, they weren’t really any more forthcoming about its particulars with their coworkers in s8 and s9 than they were back when it was a secret between s5 and s7.

while they did engage in some slightly more visible couple behaviors after “coming out” (e.g., sara calling grissom “gil” at work, sometimes checking in on each other in grissom’s office when their shifts overlapped, sara occasionally picking grissom up from his scenes, in rare instances attending social events as a couple, etc.), their level of disclosure regarding their relationship itself didn’t actually much change from what it had been back when they were still on the dl.

all they really allowed anyone to know was the very fact that they were indeed together—not when and how they first got together, how they spent their time at home, what their dynamics away from work were like, their relationship history, their future plans, etc. they continued to play everything very close to the chest (to the point where they didn’t even tell anyone about their engagement following the events of episode 08x04 “the case of the cross-dressing carp”).

they never really got into the habit back then of letting anyone “in.”

there were undoubtedly a number of reasons why they didn’t, including some degree of guilty feelings over having lied to their friends for so long, their generally private natures, their sense of what was appropriate and inappropriate to talk about at work, force of habit carrying over from their “secret dating” days, a desire to avoid awkward questions and comments about their personal lives, etc.; however, i think a big one, especially for sara, was that she didn’t know how to reconcile her public persona and her private expression of herself within her relationship with grissom without revealing (what would be for her) some fairly intimate details about her life.

skirting the details of how her personal history played into her and grissom getting together—like, say, that one of the major precipitating events of their official relationship in vegas was grissom coming over to her apartment and encouraging her to talk about her childhood trauma, even though she’d never told anyone about it before—would be one thing, but there’d be no way to fully avoid airing her personal feelings and presenting herself in a new way otherwise.

that prospect would be absolutely daunting to her.

i mean, hell, she’d even had a hard time admitting to her relationship with hank back in the day—seriously: count the number of times in s3 when she argues against the notion that he’s her boyfriend, even though he clearly is—and she’d never even actually fallen for that guy!

talking about grissom, the actual love of her life, even just in a superficial “yup, he’s my man” sense, would have required more vulnerability than she was comfortable showing to anyone but him.

that so, she largely didn’t talk about him/their relationship, at least between when they first came out at the end of s7 and when she left vegas for the second time at the beginning of s9.

so cue her return to vegas at the start of s10.

now everything is different: she and grissom are married, and marrying someone is by its very nature a public declaration.

though certainly there are many details which married couples can and do keep between themselves, their lives are typically so entwined that hiding how much and in what ways they influence each other would be difficult.

and also super weird.

part of the reason people marry is for the social message it sends: it’s establishing a bond in a public way, saying to the world, “this is my person.”

that so, when sara shows up in vegas at the start of s10, she finds herself in a position she’s never been in before, which is that not only is her relationship known but it’s also more “forward-facing” than it’s ever been.

she’s been spending every day for the last nine+ months with grissom, and everything that’s going on with her is tied up in him. whereas she used to have two connected but ultimately partitioned identities—one professional and one private, only the former of which was ever fully visible to her teammates—now her identities have merged.

the part of her life which had always, even after she and grissom “came out,” been hidden from her coworkers—the part where she and grissom are stupidly in love with each other and much softer and more attached than anyone could imagine—is now something they have at least partial access to, much more so than they ever have before.

that means they get to know a side to her they hadn’t seen much of previously.

and, as discussed in the metaphor, when they do meet that side of her, that also means that they have to adjust to it—to learn to relate to her differently than they had before.

for both sides, this debut of “mrs. grissom” is awkward, not in the sense that there’s anything wrong with or bad about it, but just because, like catherine says in the scene in question, “that’s a weird side of [sara]” compared to what they’re used to—and it’s even weird for sara to show off that side of herself publicly.

specifically for catherine, while she has over the last few years come to respect sara a lot more than she did when sara first arrived in vegas, she has also always had this kind of view of sara as a “kid,” remaining highly aware that she’s got 10+ years of life and work experience up on her.

in all honesty, though she has come to view sara as a friend on her own terms, she’s never quite understood grissom’s attraction to sara and has only been able to rationalize it as a kind of “okay, well, he’s obviously going through a midlife crisis” deal; otherwise, it hasn’t really computed for her why someone his age might want to be with someone who’s still so incredibly young (and, in her view, oftentimes markedly immature).

so cut to this scene in the locker room, where not only does sara prove amazingly levelheaded and offer catherine some really sage, wise-beyond-her-years advice but where she also shows that she is a good wife™ to grissom maybe more so than catherine herself ever was to eddie.

instead of this hotheaded young lolita with barely any self-awareness to speak of, sara is this collected, insightful, mature woman with good takes on both professional matters and personal ones.

it’s the first real glimpse catherine gets into the sara who is the kind of person it’s unsurprising that grissom would fall in love with.

and it’s weird and it’s awkward in the sense that it shatters catherine’s previous conceptions—because, seriously, where did this sara come from? had she been there all along?—but it’s also kind of impressive.

there’s this whole new dimension to sara catherine never knew existed, and, honestly, she thinks she likes it, even if it might take some getting used to.

grissom and sara watch baseball together. who would’ve thought?

meanwhile, on sara’s side of things, she's got this sense of self-consciousness, because she knows that a lot has changed with her even just in the year’s time since she was last in vegas—all of it for the better, honestly, but all of it also drastic, with her becoming such a different person than she ever was when catherine and the rest of her teammates used to know her.

as a side note, while i’m not really a fan of the later seasons, i do very much enjoy how undeniably happy sara seems during s10 and s11. baby girl smiles all the time and especially when anybody mentions her husband; she just absolutely lights up.

while she’s not necessarily scared that they’ll reject her, she is somewhat apprehensive because it’s going to be a new vibe. she's so much happier now than she was then, and so many of the walls she used to have are just gone. she’s wearing her heart on her sleeve more so than she ever has before, and, because she’s married and coming back from living this fabulous dream life in paris, everyone’s going to know why; they’re all going to know exactly why it is she can’t stop smiling.

she thinks she’s ready for that change, but she also knows that after four-ish years of obfuscating everything about her private life, it’s going to be a little bit of a culture shock to openly admit, “yeah, i’m basically living my own personal fairy tale with grissom, and i couldn’t be more over-the-moon about it.”

so when she finds herself babbling to catherine in baseball metaphors and acknowledging the reason that said metaphors come to mind for her is because grissom’s been teaching her the ins-and-outs of “the beautiful game,” it’s an exposing moment for her.

even though it’s just baseball, it’s more than she’s ever copped to before when it comes to her and grissom’s home life.

—and it is wonderful to finally talk about, but also a little bit surreal.

hence how squirrelly sara seems.

so that brings us to the scene from the reboot.

i very much agree with you that sara seems very balanced there and very centered.

part of that’s definitely just maturity—she’s just turned fifty and is very much an “old married” now in 2021—but, like you say, part of that’s also knowing how to “fix all her things.”

to me, it really comes down to her unifying all of the parts of her life. before, in s1-s7, she was always split down the middle, having to keep up this façade at work, pretending to care less and be far less involved with grissom than she actually was, playing it cool around him even when her heart was either breaking or beating for him. then, even in s8-s13, she was still stuck in this kind of half-life, this time even in a physical sense, where she was often living apart from him, maintaining these two separate existences, one based around her work and one based around her relationship. finally, between s13 and “immortality,” it wasn’t just that she was divided but subtracted; that the life she was living felt incomplete because she wasn’t living it with the person she loved.

only since finding grissom on the pier in marina del rey has she really been able to put everything in order: to do away with that old partitioning between who she is and what she cares about in public and who she is and what she cares about in private; to center her life all in one place (with her one person); to heal that gaping wound in her heart.

and so much of that ordering, of course, has to do with grissom and setting things to rights with him and finally living with him 100% of the time, but i think it also goes beyond that; in a more philosophical sense, sara has finally allowed herself to want what she wants and to believe that she can truly have that happy ending. she’s not forcing herself to choose between the different things that fulfill her anymore; it’s not an “either/or” proposition but an “and” one.

she’s spent the last six years doing work that’s meaningful to her, living her life in the daylight, side-by-side with the love of her life, and you can tell.

jorja’s mentioned in a couple of interviews that this iteration of sara is more chill and perhaps softer than the sara of yore, and i think we see that change in her in this scene; there’s just so much light in her.

she’s at peace.

whereas back in s10, she was still trying to figure out how to reconcile all the disparate parts of her existence, now she’s mastered that skill.

she’s happy, and she believes that she has the right to be happy—that it’s something that’s truly possible for her.

like you say, considering her backstory, that’s a truly remarkable conclusion for her to have arrived at. it’s amazing to see her so centered and at one with herself.

i love that development for her.

DW anon here - thanks SO much for your response. I have almost every episode of DW memorised and look forward to re-watching with some Sherlock goggles! And I can't wait to deep-dive into the tags you suggested. Quick follow-up question, which you don't have to answer since you've done so much already. I haven't seen The Lodger in a while so I might be forgetting things but of the list of eps you mentioned that's the one I can't quite see any Sherlock parallels. Can you elaborate, if you're inclined? The other eps you mentioned immediately made me think, yes, I can see that, just going from memory. Thanks again!

You're most welcome, anon! I'm sure you'll see what I mean about The Lodger if you take another look. It's about co-workers (and practically flatmates) who are secretly pining for each other; some of the decor and dialogue are taken from the Sherlock pilot, and well... the point of the episode is that someone's in need of a pilot, recalling TAB and TFP with the inability to "land" and the search for a pilot.

Searching for a pilot is also the plot of Doctor Who 10.01 (helpfully titled... The Pilot), which is an even more overtly Sherlock-ish episode. At least the characters get a proper landing in The Lodger, whereas it takes the full arc of series 10 for the lovers in The Pilot to be reunited.

Also, bonus points for The Lodger for revealing that the upstairs floor doesn't really exist.

Hi! Are there good Destiel eps in season 10?

YES okay so like. there may not be as many Iconic single episodes in s10 but the entire cas/colette parallel arc (which I think is one of the best things we’ve ever gotten) actually makes it a strong destiel season imo

in terms of specific episodes:

-10.01 Black: they don’t interact at all and Cas does heaven stuff all episode BUT this goes on the list purely for victorian widow bathrobe cas at the beginning and the incredibly mournful “I miss him.” So maybe just watch the first few minutes

-10.03 Soul Survivor has the incredible demon!dean + angel!cas shot and the great “you look terrible”/”I’m glad you’re here, man” conversation at the end

-10.05 Fan Fiction. this may be a controversial one since Cas isn’t in it but it’s when “destiel” is said on screen and I personally do like it

-10.09 The Things We Left Behind diner date + heart to heart!!!! (also claire)

-10.14 The Executioner’s Song is the episode that explicitly parallels Cas to Colette

-10.18 has charlie!!! but is largely unimportant for destiel BUT the very end all four of them are happy together and that is rare so I’m putting it down anyway

-10.22 The Prisoner is the most important destiel episode of this season tbh. it has the (heartbreaking) fight in it

One of the things I’ve been meaning to do is create a list of eps from Moffat era that I enjoyed. Some seasons I enjoyed more than others.

ELEVENTH DOCTOR

Series 5

5.01 The Eleventh Hour - Fun and Enjoyable

5.02 The Beast Below – kind of quirky

5.07 Amy’s Choice – interesting plot, again kind of quirky – dream trope which I enjoy

5.10 Vincent and the Doctor – OMG Favorite ep of the season by far. I cried

5.11 The Lodger – Fun twist on monster behind the door trope/The Doctor stranded

Series 6

A Christmas Carol - Kind of a bittersweet romance with flying fish

6.03 Curse of the Black Spot – pirates – very fun romp

6.05 The Rebel Flesh – mainly because of the morality issue

6.06 The Almost People – ditto to above and Doctor vs Doctor aspect

Series 7

7.01 Asylum of the Daleks – Iffy on the list because I don’t believe Daleks would have an asylum planet. But aspects of the story were intriguing.

7.02 Dinosaurs on a Space Ship – just a fun romp and I loved Rory’s Dad

The Snowmen – Interesting little foray into killer snowmen – historical setting

7.04 The Doctor’s Wife – Favorite ep of all Moffat era and of this season. Neil Gaiman ep

7.06 The Bells of Saint John – introduction of Clara – interesting plot

7.07 The Rings of Akhaten – Really good Eleventh Doctor parts

7.09 Hide – This would come a close second to 7.04

7.10 Journey to the Center of the TARDIS – fun ep and visually very interesting diving into the inner rooms of the TARDIS

TWELFTH DOCTOR

Series 8

8.01 Deep Breath – really good introduction to Twelve – historical setting

8.02 Into the Dalek – kind of iffy with this one but it had some interesting Twelve in it

8.03 Robots of Sherwood – Favorite ep of the season – such a fun adventure

8.05 Time Heist – really enjoyed this one too – good adventure

8.06 The Caretaker – another good Twelve ep

8.08 Mummies on the Orient Express – another fun adventure

8.09 Flatline – it’s got interesting scenes, the plot is a little weak but I loved Twelve in it

Series 9

9.03 Under the Lake - interesting plot

9.04 Before the Flood – part 2 of the above

9.05 The Girl Who Died – mainly because of Maisie Williams

9.06 The Woman Who Lived - mainly because of Maisie Williams

Series 10

10.01 The Pilot – introduces Bill who I adore!

10.02 Smile – interesting and Bill’s first adventure off world

10.03 Thin Ice – Favorite ep of the season – awesome story!

10.04 Knock Knock – I love haunted house type tropes and this was excellent

10.05 Oxygen – trapped on a space station with limited oxygen trope

Case files 10.01

what I think happened in:

Case 10.01, the case of "Cursed Pygmalion" or "How I stopped worrying and started fearing for my life instead"

In 1994 Channel Six hired Niger Dickerson to host night variety show, nicknamed "Nigel’s SOS," (short for "Nigel Dickerson presents Saturdays on Six,"), where Nigel was 'held prisoner' by mysterious off-screen "Mr. Six", and played pranks on his guests. The prank always concluded with the guests being informed that they "got berried" and receiving a raspberry trophy.

In 1996, as part of the prank, a character of Mr. Bonzo was created (Nigel designed the look, nobody can really remember who came up with that name*)

The first guest confronted with Mr. Bonzo, chef Gordon Ramsey Gotard Rimbaeu was so freaked out, he broke the actors arm with a frying pan (allegedly**).

After that the actors (allegedly**) wearing Bonzo's suit would change frequently. Playing the role has become sort of rite of passage for the newbies on set.

Bonzo's role also changed overtime. From a jumpscare he went to become the show's mascot, to eventually replace Mr. Six as Nigel's 'jailer'. He was a hit with target audience, the merch was selling, they even started building a themepark… and then everything changed, when Terrance Menki attacked got caught.

Who is Terrance Menki? Apparently a serial killer, whose gimmick was killing in cosplay, presumably different one each time, as he had a whole wardrobe of costumes. Just bad luck that when he got caught with his 11th victim, he was wearing a knock-off Bonzo suit. (It wasn't even a good knock-off, all the colours were backwards!)

Alas, the press immediately dubbed him the "Bonzo Butcher", the public ate it up, and Mr. Bonzo's public image was ruined. Shortly afterwards, on 3rd March 2000 the Bonzoland was closed (ARG exclusive information), "Nigel's SOS" was cancelled, and Nigel was left to deal with hate-mail and death threats, despite having nothing to do with the whole mess (allegedly).

That would be the end of the story, except… between 2016 and 2021 there were at least 3 murders where Mr. Bonzo was (allegedly) seen at the scene.

When asked about in an interview conducted by Geraldine in August 2021, Nigel Dickerson categoricity denied it refused to comment on any potential Bonzo involvement in any crime.

Considering that he'd been living in Mr. Bonzo's house for the past [number unknown] years, his claims of ignorance and innocence fall rather flat.

The most recent Bonzo sighting was not reported on Saturday night, 09th of March 2024, when Gwendolym Bouchard, acting on behalf of OIAR, handed over an envelope containing (reportedly***) a name and address. Mr. Bonzo graciously accepted and chewed said envelope in his NOT SOFT teeth and lumbered into the night.

More news next Thursday at 5pm. For now let's speculate a bit:

*If Nigel didn't come up with Bonzo's name, and his producer Rich didn't come up with the name… then who did? I won't say it's impossible that it was just some random intern that Nigel couldn't be bothered to remember, but… Names are important. Names have power. Maybe something was trying to manifest itself, and started with giving itself a name?

**Where there ever actually any actors inside Bonzo suit? There are a few possibilities: a) it's been all Bonzo all along – it would go well with Bonzo naming himself, but otherwise I think it's unlikely. It's possible that: b) there only ever was one, very unlucky actor. When the Britain's snootiest chef attacked him with a pan, he did more than just break the poor man's arm. The actor died in the costume, and stayed in the costume, and just… kept going in the costume. This is macabre enough origin story to be plausible, but I'm gonna say nah. I think that: c) SOS really had their little ritual, where a stream of very tired, minimal wage studio workers had to run around in the suit until the next loser was hired. This is too easily verifiable for Nigel to lie about. I bet there were little 'behind the scenes' documentaries during the show's golden era, where Jack the stagehand and Joe the janitor bitched in polite British about how much of a pain in the neck it was.

So at what point did the actors become unnecessary? When and how was current day Mr. Bonzo born? I think it was a process that started with the name, but ended shortly after his show was cancelled. Over the years of popularity, as more and more people thought of Bonzo as a character (or a person) more than a funny suit, Bonzo was becoming less and less of just a funny suit. When the costume no longer had actors to animate it, it decided to animate itself. And because at that time the Bonzo-mania turned to Bonzo-hate, instead of chaotic but largely harmless creature he could have been, he became… well. Something that a shady government organization apparently uses as a hitman.

And here I need to ask an important question: What the fuck was up with that? Joking. (Though I wish to know how do you even discover you can do that). (***and did the envelope really contain name and address? Did Gwen check? Does she remember the name?)

The question is: who is the unlucky person, about to receive a lethal blast of the 90s nostalgia? Will we ever even know? (Will we know tomorrow, 11.04.2024, when Celia clicks on the newest case and hears an emergency call from someone fleeing for their life from a 'guy in a weird costume?')

Other question: how long has Nigel been held hostage in his own house (sorry – Bonzo's house) and just how sorry should I feel for him? He seemed pretty unconcerned about the actor with broken arm, and about Bonzo running off into the night to do murder, but I imagine that living in constant shadow of Mr Bonzo is pretty stressful and doesn't leave much room for empathy, so… I don't know. I'm gonna wait and see.

hi okay i kept talking in the tags on my last post so here is more about s13 predictions ig

like i said we all know den literally can't function without mac it's been proven several times in the show

CLEARLY in mac & dennis break up

& my thought is how this will affect s13

so like,,,they're lying if they're gonna try & pretend like dennis can actually cope w/o mac if anything i think he needs him more than ever rn. even if dennis miraculously developed quickly & amazingly enough 2 be a dad that doesn't change how much he depends on mac. boy couldn't live without him in s5, and he was still like, okay then? obviously none of these characters r okay but i've seen only a few ppl mention dennis in the latest seasons. consequently mac seems happier this past season especially now that he's out which is great (i mean then u have DDL & then that kinda shattered but let's not mention that rn) but like we know dennis has been like,,,ragin' a lot more & he was diagnosed in s10 & we haven't really seen him happy in awhile like compared 2 earlier seasons when he seemed more calm & happy. what he thinks he needs is to leave his old life behind but what he actually needs, probably, is the gang rn more than ever but ofc he's not gonna admit that! so he run!

there's a number of reasons why i can't see them letting den be gone for any length of time but the main one being that it just doesn't make sense? like frank said u can't just go be a dad & he was right, & even if i think dennis could be capable of that it's obvious he's getting Worse & to be away from his friends, his family rn is not gonna help that, especially when we know he would be miserable in ND which is literally essentially what he says in 10.01 when he gets off the plane. i'm not a dumbass who thinks he's a sociopath & i know he has big feelings but i still don't see this being a situation where a child is magically the thing 2 crack dennis & fix all his problems

so like, there's my argument based on just the POV of the setting. now let's go back 2 den himself. like i said it definitely seems like he's getting worse, & him admitting that he has feelings was a huge, pivotal thing for him especially to admit that to the entire gang. from there they could use that to finally get den's character to open up a lil more & not try to suppress everything which i think is essentially why he seems worse? he wants to be one way & not feel & it's affecting him as it has over the years. we also know from mac, that he's been distant w him. whether u ship them or not they have a connection that's different from all the rest. so mac senses that den is acting different& like pushing him away, & we know it's not bc he's gay cuz den always knew that. this is where theories come into play, cuz it could have to do w den's feelings & trying to push the gang away so that he can pretend everything is okay which i think is a reasonable guess, or if u wanna add another layer to that there's also been the mention of him being uncomfortable with mac being out because now he's scared of mac's feelings & his own feelings.

it could be bc of the thing b/w them, or just the different connection that they have, but mac is the only one who says anything about dennis being distant. so is he only being distant w mac, or do the others just not notice bc they're not mac? either way mac is the one who notices & he's gonna be the first one to notice things going on w dennis. den has been like on a downward spiral almost & i think the RPG & brian jr just brought that to a head, & he runs, supposedly 2 deal w the latter. (i'm sorry i'm referring 2 a fuckin baby like it's a war crime but i don't evenl like them anyway so it's fine)

like depending on how u wanna interpret it, RPG=dennis realizing how he feels about mac, or how mac feels about him, or just the fact that he was all upset about vday only 2 find out mac got him what he wanted more than anythin & it didn't even matter 2 him that there wasn't a rocket bc it was the gesture so i mean interpret that how u will but FEELINGS

& then brian jr=who he apparently knew about but only becomes a problem bc mandy all of a sudden decides 2 show up & also thinks he's someone else so i really still don't understand some of the logic behind this event but anyhow. he's like noticeably v on edge this ep bc he literally had no idea how 2 get out of it & then all of a sudden he's like wait no i don't want to, but that's not the only thing? pretending to be in a relationship w mac & mac telling him he wanted 2 fake it & raise the kid w him was obviously also adding onto that & still his response was "im not gonna PRETEND to be in a relationship w u for the entirety of my child's life" so again interpret that how u will but...obviously we know he decides 2 go raise brian jr

but he's not gonna be able to do that. not bc he's not capable. i'd like 2 point out he left everyone & everything behind including his RPG & his beloved range rover, so i mean he prob left everything at his apartment too. (i have some theories bout this but it is not the time for those) like his car. is still in philly. his decision is made essentially on a whim after a moment w his kid & like an existential crisis while his friends danced around him bc up until that point he just didn't wanna deal w it

so it could've been like a few hours b/w those scenes but it's still a pretty impulsive decision considering it's a child, a new state you don't even like, a lovely woman ur not interested in, and leaving your friends, family, job, and entire life back in philly. maybe he also thinks it'll help him w his feelings. but he's been repressing shit for at least 12 years that we've seen (we know it's been longer like prob his whole life) & noticeably been getting worse, gives a sudden revelation to his friends about his feelings, & then leaves. that's not...okay. like we know they all have trauma & ridiculously unhealthy coping mechanisms but even if u take everything else away he's not gonna be happy having suppressed all his emotions and problems & then leaving having barely dealt with them w the others at all.

especially mac, who's a huge part of this which u can't deny even if u don't ship them. now i do so like my comments are gonna sway a bit more but i think it'll still work even if u don't agree w me on that aspect. personally i think there could be some sort of parallel there about how mac has gotten happier, while dennis has been more unhappy? like mac comes out & u could even argue dennis being jealous & acting that way bc he wants 2 come out & he's been suppressing that for so long but he's still not at a place rn to do it. or even the fact that mac feels more open & free to be himself while dennis feels the complete opposite & if anything has felt like repressing things even more, while mac mentions being sensitive (12.08 hints he feels more free 2 be sensitive now that he's out & doesn't have 2 worry about being so masculine so that he won't be called gay) & dennis mentions his big feelings but he's still not rlly talking about anything bc i mean u don't really just reveal everything suddenly. so especially in that regard he definitely needs mac.

like not only bc of their connection but bc he depends so much on mac & now mac feels more open & honest & i really think den needs to be around him more, not pushing him away (which could also be why) bc he needs to see how much happier mac is & how he's changed & maybe it'll help him open up more, & if anything mac would probably be the best one for him to do that w anyway.

i'm also gonna mention my sort of views on some ways den could come back: now considering his car was still there i think it could even be possible that mac goes home to their apartment to find that dennis is still there, maybe just waiting or maybe packing, who knows. them blowing up the range rover & using the RPG without him only to find that he hadn't left yet, or at all is definitely something i could see happening (& i know this is a more serious post about den but come on i think we'd all laugh @ that) or the thing i definitely see happening is the gang talking in the bar, who knows how long it's been (maybe a day, maybe a few months) & all of a sudden dennis strolls in and says nothing, walks behind the bar & grabs a beer while the others just stop talking and stare. cue title card "dennis is back" (tbh this is one of the most realistic ones i think & i know glenn mentioned it might be funny if he just didn't come back at all but i think this is vastly more funny & in keeping w the show i mean come ON) or there's like the sad part. this again could depend on how u wanna view things. but if u look at it as dennis going on a downward spiral, only for him to kinda hit rock bottom w the RPG & brian jr. (which isn't even a theory that's literally what happened) then we know this isn't good. it's not a typical situation where they leave on good terms, or they leave happy because we know he wasn't happy. we know he initially didn't want this & isn't ready & we know he hates north dakota, & we also know it's not like he's in love w mandy or anything no matter how nice she seemed, as the person he was closest to was: mac. so it's not like he's really leaving for a better lifestyle either necessarily, because he may have mentioned envisioning himself getting married & having a kid but we saw how it went when he married someone he didn't love, and how he again was unable to function without mac, and it's obviously not how anyone plans on those things happening, & if they did have him settle down w mandy which i do not see ever happening we know he'd literally be settling.

so for him to have been going through a rough patch, to hit an extremely low point & then walk away from his friends, is not going to end well. he hit that low point & is now leaving without dealing with any of his problems because his focus is on fixing one of them: the kid, but also how he was affected by frank because he doesn't want the kid to grow up in that same way. so he thinks that's the most important issue, because he also likes to pretend he doesn't have any other ones, & thinks this is the thing he needs to deal with and everything will be fine. but he didn't deal with anything else, he's only bringing those problems with him, to north dakota, to mandy, to the kid, to his "new life." so if anything he's only gonna be more miserable and he won't even have mac there w him, who he literally depends on to function & considering he's only getting worse being w/o mac is the last thing he needs even if he thinks, or wants to believe that that's exactly what will help. idk how they're gonna deal w him being gone, if he's gone for any length of time or anything, but my point is if he's stated to be gone for months or something like that i'm pretty sure he's gonna come back at the worst we've ever seen him because he was only without mac for hours before he realized he had no idea what to do & they were only, what, a few miles away? part of all this is that he's codependent but that is most heavily dealing with mac. s5 dennis was still doing pretty okay, considering. so him not functioning without mac was just pathetic. s12 dennis has been a mess & him being without mac at arguably his lowest point is kind of scary to think about.

#im sorry this is SO LONG #but...yeah basically #some of y'all thought den was dark #but if hes gone for any length of time...#like hes gonna be sad as shit #& this isnt me being like omg he cant function w/o mac!#cuz like.#he literally cant.#theyve said this.#it isnt a joke #its not me saying it bc theyre so in love #its like..a direct result of dennis' bpd #mac happens to be the one he really relies on #that would be where id say the love comes in but #yeah #i really hope they dont do that #because ive thought before 'oh he should be gone awhile'#like maybe he'll develop more w the kid & everything #or that it'd be interesting to see the gang respond to life without him #but then i think about this #i hope they bring him back like right away like i said #cuz otherwise the only logical response from den being gone for awhile is for him to be like...Bad #ive seen fics mentioning like self harm & suicide (TW) & i've thought well i dont see that happening or thats too dark...#but honestly when i've written this all out i'm thinking it's more likely than not #& im not a psychologist im not claiming to be but i do get his character a lot bc we're very similar in that aspect like how we deal w thing #basically den needs to come back & ASAP bc its not gonna be good for him if he doesnt #dennis reynolds #macdennis #dennis needs him like now more than ever
