why do the moths get stuck in the trap(im new here)

Have a look at this post here about my moth trap. TLDR… They're attracted to a bright UV light, go to sleep in a box under said light, and then get woken up by me photographing, counting, and releasing them at daybreak. It's a way of monitoring local moth populations to find out which species are around and whether they're thriving or declining.

With a lot of folks recording moths in their spare time, it's possible to build up a decent picture of how moths are faring across the UK. Which is good because moths are v. important to our ecosystems. Their web of connections include birds, other invertebrates, trees, garden plants, and crops - and therefore us! In the end, we're all connected.

💓 BEATING HEART - what gets their heart racing?

coffee. when he drinks too much of it, it gives him heart palpitations. 

any amount of exercise or high impact sports will also get the blood pumping for sure. his heart also tends to race whenever he feels the adrenaline rushing before a test ala pre-exam jitters. or during an exam when he’s not even halfway through the questions yet, but more than half of the exam time has already passed and he has to speed up and pick up his slack or when only 3 minutes are left and yuu has one more paragraph to finish, so yuu has to write at the speed of sound, no time for mistakes. those moments really gets him going.

of course, he loves the adrenaline and the way his heart starts racing when he’s doing something he knows he shouldn’t be doing, messing with someone or stealing something or otherwise committing something foul and villainous and wretched and dastardly. he loves it when he has a close call, when he is so close to being caught in the act, but gets away with it in the end. the best kind of rush making the rewards even more satisfying.

and who can resist the sheer satisfaction he feels when someone he dislikes is floundering, struggling, trying but failing to understand something that yuu understands easily, simply, naturally. when yuu knows that someone he dislikes is wrong about something, and he is only seconds away from correcting them and getting to see them flustered and lose their composure, flapping their chops and stumbling for words to try and retort, failing miserably and embarrassingly.

yuu was bullied for as long as he could remember. since the day he could remember, up until the last day of highschool, he was always othered by his peers. in his younger days, for his bizarre mannerism and appearance. in highschool, for his disposition and a title he never asked for. despite being class president, people would isolate him and scribble derogatory insults onto the back of his white uniform shirt or pour an assortment of liquid on him to humiliate him.

classmates would relay all their menial tasks to him, even things that yuu shouldn’t have been doing alone, like cleaning the classroom at the end of the day or carrying stacks of dirty food plates to the bin at the cafeteria, expecting him to simply carry along without a word, not being able to complain because he’s “just doing his task right, oh so great class president.” or fight back because “a real class president shouldn’t mouth off and just do his job right?”. he was only considered class president if it suited the class, otherwise he was more invisible than air, worse than trash.

💥 COLLISON - what emotions do they have trouble dealing with?

yuu actually has good control over his own emotions, and he doesn’t really fight or repress any of them. he’s experienced and mature, he knows how to identify his emotions and deal with them, so he can parse feelings like sadness and anger and embarrassment or humiliation with relative ease. negative thoughts and misery are things he keeps as company so he’d rarely act out because of them. i suppose more positive emotions are ones he has less experience in? even then, yuu wouldn’t fret over it too much. he’ll accept them graciously. yuu has no trouble accepting praise or love. so, of all of them, i think the one feeling yuu absolutely despise is feeling helpless. not knowing what to do, not knowing how to do something, not knowing. he hates it. he doesn’t like how it makes him feel small and weak and powerless. he doesn’t like how it opens him up to being taunted at and jeered at by others for his shortcomings. it’s something that yuu would seek to rectify as fast as he can, and yuu has already gotten over his struggle of asking for support. he wants to resolve something by himself, but if he needs help he’s going to ask for it.

overall, yuu is very nonchalant. he doesn’t see the point of feeling emotions strongly. superlatives like “love” or “hate” or “jubilation” or “ire” or “attraction” or “revulsion” or “admiration” or “jealousy” are a waste of his time because he doesn’t let himself be affected or bothered by things external to himself, which in turn makes him emotionally resilient. to feel strongly because of other people or by circumstances outside of himself means to be vulnerable to the whims of other people and circumstances, which he frankly couldn’t care less of and are ultimately uncontrollable and unpredictable. but his thoughts and feelings and actions? those are things he can control and those are the things he anchors himself on.

annie has been letting her tail just dangle dangle dangle for the past few days. and today when i got home she was doing the same with their middle left leg. is this normal? or is this a sign of a lack of energy. i know i need to change the leaves over, and im going to this afternoon or tomorrow morning, but normally they dont get this worn out right after the leaves are no good.

DAN HENG can't hide the way his eye twitches, how tightly he grips onto his spear or the way he'd mutter things under his breath. He despises it when he's jealous, but he hates it more when he sees the reason for doing so.

He knows he's.. not exactly like all your previous partners, it stemmed an insecurity in him. He wasn't all too funny, and knew he couldn't make you laugh with a corny joke.

So the way Sampo keeps making you laugh, making you smile, it was sparking a jealous flame in his heart. But more than anything, it saddened him that he couldn't make you laugh like that.

God, your smile was so pretty.

After a while, he interlocks his fingers with yours and mutters a small 'Can we go?' to you. You immediately notice his saddened tone, and thank Sampo for his time before walking home with your boyfriend.

"Dan Heng?" You say softly, noticing his rather saddened mood. He lets out a small hum to acknowledge your call for him, and you sigh. "Are you upset?"

He nods his head.

"Is it.. because of Sampo?"

He hesitates, but that alone gives you an answer.

Dan Heng takes a deep breath, before looking at you, his eyes filled with honesty. "I was.. jealous. I know I can't make you laugh the way he does, and it frustrates me. I want to be a man who makes you smile everyday but-"

Amidst his rant, he sees how your gaze softened at his words. This entire time, he was insecure? He hid it well, so well, at the very least from you. "I'm sorry, this is stupid-"

"N-no! It's not, I should be apologizing if anything! I failed to realize these things.. I'm sorry, my love. Sampo.. he makes me laugh, but you make my heart flutter. You make me feel things no one else can, okay? I'm yours, as you are mine."

He smiles at you, he's just happy he communicated his feelings, and you understood. "I'll be sure to try and tell you how I feel next time, okay? As long as you promise you'll stop hanging out with him. I was honestly afraid I was gonna have to get rid of him."

You blinked a few times, but he sighs. "I'm kiddinngg.."

JING YUAN knows he's far too good of a man, therefore doesn't get jealous.

He's yet to be disproven in the first part, but his golden eyes are filled with annoyance as the stares of a certain enemy of his lingers far too long on you.

You were filling in for Yanqing, he was absent for the day (something about falling into an ice cold river and getting sick or something...) and so someone needed to be there as the General would be meeting Blade.

And Jing Yuan couldn't ignore how Blade's eyes never left your form while he spoke, hanging your head down low and so you wouldn't notice. That made him greatly annoyed, almost unable to focus, but he had a mission at hand. And so he forced his jealousy to subside.

Needless to say, the small marks on your neck was embarassing to have seen in public. (And the small bird constantly pecking at Blade's hair was definitely also not Jing Yuans doing.)

GEPARD is so understanding, he evaluates every situation with logical thinking, as expected as a leader.

So it wasn't hard to figure out the intentions of the 'friend' that was speaking to you, how their voice was almost sweeter, and the way they clinged onto your arm was signalling red flags.

Gepard wouldn't have minded this, it could've easily been friendly gestures, but Serval is one of your closest friends and you were within a friendgroup. And she knows that person has a crush on you, and it was painfully obvious.

So naturally, he swiftly and surpisingly gently pulls you from the waist out of their grasp especially with how firm his grip around you was. He gives them a not so friendly glare, and plants a soft kiss to your lips. "My partner." He states, pulling you close as you're left to be stunned with the sudden posessiveness of your partner. "Mine."

Blade simply stares down at the person even attempting to approach you with clearly bad intentions. And if they dare to try to push their luck, Blade comes home with blood on his hands.

"What did you do??" You'd ask, you already knew the answer after already learning what Blade was truly like. "What was necessary." He replied, a kiss on your cheek as he walks in through the door to wash his hands.

after barely a day of my poll being up it seems like so many people know about and really love natural history collections which makes my heart sing!! i would love for my fellow natural history nerds to rise up and sign this petition to protect one!!

duke university is CLOSING its herbarium which holds over 800,000 plant/fungus/algae specimens including 2,000 types spanning 180 years of collection effort all across the planet. it is the second largest private university herbarium in the entire united states. this is really bad!! i will explain in short terms:

every natural history collection's purpose is to collect and maintain specimens, which are collectively supposed to be a thorough representation of biodiversity across time and space. when sampled at regular intervals at the same places, specimens can tell endless stories about changes in shape, abundance, range, genetics, and SO much more. basically, they are a big sample size to use in all manner of studies, including those that concern climate change and biodiversity loss! new species and evolutionary relationships are constantly discovered at collections even when specimens are like 100 years old. duke has recently championed itself as a global leader in biodiversity research which is honestly in jawdropping conflict with its move to close its herbarium. this herbarium not only supplies duke researchers with material but researchers all over the world. specimens have been cited in over 46,000 publications and over 13,000 since 2019 alone. we have old shit in our cabinets but the science is anything but history!

faculty and staff have 2-3 years to move the specimens elsewhere which is NOT enough time for 800,000 old dried plant/fungus specimens. this is an issue in even the BEST natural history collections at the biggest institutions but collections are pretty much always understaffed and underpaid. a university collection usually relies a lot on student labor and you know they do not have the time to be contributing to this move. to find collections that would take these specimens AND allocate the manpower and time needed to send them off is not feasible. types, especially holotypes should really NEVER be transported because they serve as the exemplar for the characteristics of the species it represents. i do not feel good about hurrying 800,000 old, fragile specimens including 2,000 types getting moved in a short amount of time by a few people. i do not want to know what will happen to the remaining specimens that don't make it out in time.

this sets a really dangerous precedent for other university collections across the world. this is not a random state school, this is duke university, which is practically an ivy league. if they close such a prominent and respected collection just because they're not 260% maximizing their profits, it may let other greedy university admins know they can get away with the same. i've only been in the professional collections world for a short time but shutting down a collection let alone one as big as duke's is almost UNHEARD of. i haven't seen scientists band together so strongly and quickly over an issue (i'm in an ENTOMOLOGY collections listserv and someone advocated for emailing duke admin against this decision), probably because they can all agree on how strongly this could impact climate and biodiversity research and policymaking down the road.

tl;dr if duke herbarium really closes, we would be losing a vital hub for ongoing and future research that helps us understand how our world is changing through the dynamics of our plants and their allies. other institutions might see this and follow suit with their own collections.
