Mitsuki x Chocho - Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

They're the only reason I watched Boruto! Give me more MitsuCho!

Zabuza x Haku - Naruto

I think Haku was always secretly in love with Zabuza, whereas Zabuza forced himself not to care about anything apart from fighting and his own ambition. Even reanimated, he didn't want Haku to know he cared about him. So tragic! I want to see them reincarnated into better circumstances, where they can be together, in peace. That's why I like to imagine Iwabe and Denki are their present incarnations.

L x Misa - Death Note

This one's weird. I used to hate L's guts, yet I found him hot in a messed up/ prison fantasy sort of way. Then a few months back, I read some L x Misa fics and started to prefer him to Light. Maybe it's just AU versions of L? I still think he was pretty much as bad as Light, but at least, like Misa, he had a tragic background that drove him. Light was just an ego-maniac. And of course, I've always adored Misa!

Sebastian x Mey-Rin - Kuroshitsuji / Black Butler

My most recent otp. I had some knowledge of the series and thought Sebastian was hot. But oh, when I sat down to watch the first episode, it was nearly instantaneous! The klutzy, nervous, redheaded maid who pines for him... I want these two to get together! I need it!

Zagato x Princess Emeraude - Magic Kinght Rayearth

My second anime otp ever, from back in the 90s. Along with ZabuHaku, this one still makes me cry. It's so, so sad! And Zagato is still one of the sexiest characters in anime!

Gaara x Matsuri - Naruto

I don't know why this ship gets so much hate. (I've gathered a lot of it is from fangirls with Sue-ish OCs. Being someone who resembles and identifies strongly with Gaara, I feel no personal attraction to him. Maybe I think Matsuri is cute and sweet?) I thought they were so adorable together in the Four Celestials filler arc and have shipped them since.

Neji x Tenten - Naruto

I'm still jaded by Neji's death. So much lost potential! And it's cruel that Tenten did get to be like Tsunade, but in the worst way; they both lost their men to a war while fighting beside them.

Sailor Uranus x Sailor Neptune - Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon

My very first anime ship! Haruka and Michiru are still the yardstick by which all OTPs should be measured.

The seiyuu (original japanese voice) question. Forgive my slow descent into madness, but I just noticed that:

If this isn’t another proof of a parallel between Zagato-Emeraude | Eagle- Lantis than I am dumb. I know this is for the anime version, but I think they wanted to make an homage to the original clamp story. And btw, Megumi Ogata is a legend. How she managed to do Eagle’s and Emeraude’s voices so differently it’s beyond me. You have this young and delicate but masculine and volitive voice for Eagle and then this candy sweet baby Emeraude girly tone. Applause 👏🏻

I watched the “Rayearth” OVA’s tonight...

Oh did I watch the “Rayeath” OVA’s tonight...

So many, many questions. Yes, I know this is an AU, but still I must know. WHY? Why is Hikaru now the captain of the gymnastics team when before she was literally raised in a Kendo dojo? Did this change come into play or make sense? NO. It’s implied that Umi is still captain of her fencing team. And Fuu...now plays piano. That’ll come in handy fighting all those monsters. Hey, wasn’t it neat that all three girls were already trained in martial arts and combat before they were summoned to Cephiro, making it actually believable that they could become warriors? WELL SCREW THAT FUU PLAYS PIANO!!!

Why is Eagle now Emeraud’s brother instead of Ferio? Was it just so Ferio could fight Fuu? And yes, why I did notice that Umi was also pitted against her respective love interest. And wasn’t she just oh so sad when he died...for some reason. It’s not like they had the same relationship from the original where she literally slapped the character development into him. In fact, they had no relationship at all outside of him trying to kill her. But here he goes boom and it’s oh noes poor Ascot! We barely knew ye! No really, we barely knew ye.

Why are the girls naked inside their Mashins? They weren’t naked in the original. They had armor. Oh right, because in the original getting their armor and evolving it was part of their growth as Magic Knights and ain’t nobody got time for that here. NEKKID IT IS!!!

What the hell is even going on plotwise? The original was deceptively simple: A take on fantasy RPGs/rescue the princess stories with a dark twist at the end of season one and season two picking up the pieces. Season one: Three girls are summoned to another world to rescue a princess. They must find weapons and armor while fighting monsters and foes. At the end of their journey they find that both the villain and the princess are not what they seemed and their true mission was a deception from the start.

In the OVAs...I don’t even know where to start. Hikaru makes a wish to stay with Umi and Fuu, who are already her friends in this version, and somehow this triggers them being chosen to save the world because instead of being summoned to Cephiro, Cephiro is crashing into Earth...

Because Emeraude wanted it to I guess? Or maybe it was her brother who isn’t Ferio but Eagle who has her under a spell thinking Zagato is alive. Oh yeah, Zagato is dead. And this whole thing is happening because the Spirits are mad at Cephiro? And Emeraude is also a spirit?

It feels like Clamp wanted to remake “Rayearth” as a gloomy apocalyptic drama in the vein of “X/1999″, and believe me, “X” was already an eighteen volume slog. We don’t need more “X”. Looking at the credits however, it appears the Clamp team didn’t have much to do with the OVA. They had writing credits on the anime. Here, nothing but the obligatory notice that these washed out imitations are based on characters they created. So I can’t blame this on them.

But the biggest sin in this mess is Hikaru. This is Hikaru in the series:

“Meh, dreams and legends are stoopid. Broody angst brood.”

And it doesn’t get any better. Hikaru, one of the most lovable Genki girls in anime/manga and one of Clamp’s best characters, has been watered down to a generic, bland dismal shell. The other two aren’t great but there are small traces of them still there. Hikaru is left with no personality whatsoever. Ya done my girl wrong, OVA.

Even if you find the original corny, or aren’t a fan of magical girl shows, it had charm. It had character development for heroes and villains alike. It had a bright color palette and a fun Sisterhood of the Traveling Escudo Armor. Here? You could replace the characters with cardboard and get the same effect.

Stick to the manga. Or the first season of the anime.

SRW T first playthrough final thoughts

this’ll probably be a long one. or it won’t be? idk editing is for cowards and these posts are about COURAGE

Mechanics:

Nice quick section because there wasn’t that much changed from SRW X, aside from one nice addition.

They added a “Supporter” mechanic, where characters who play prominent roles in a series but don’t necessarily take to the field in mecha themselves can use a single large SP pool to support the active characters in a variety of ways; e.g., Vanilla, Gotho, and Coconna from VOTOMS give a bonus to money for one turn. This is a nice way to get the supporting casts a bit more of a chance to shine without either putting them in mecha or dropping them as sub-pilots on battleships, so I’m all for it. Plus, Rain’s SP restore was pretty clutch for my turn count in later stages.

I don’t think I talked about this in my X spaghetti post, but recent games (starting with V? probably?) have also allowed combination attacks to be used without deploying every single unit involved (albeit at a scaling damage penalty). In X, about the only use I got out of this was with Great Mightgaine, but here it boosted Mazinger Z, Rayearth, and Burning Gundam as well, so it really felt like a QoL option in a game with a very stacked roster.

Debuts:

The reason everyone got so fucking hyped about this game. I mean, Cowboy Bebop? Magic Knight Rayearth? Literally any iteration at all of Captain Harlock? Talk about your all-star addition list. But despite that, as I sort of mentioned before, the newcomer I ended up liking the most in T was the one that I barely counted as one when the roster was announced.

So lets talk for a bit about Mazinger Z: Infinity. I still haven’t seen the movie (though I’ve heard it’s good, and now fully intend to), but god, it gave us the dynamic I’d never known I’d wanted all along: an “X years later” Koji to go with Amuro from Char’s Counterattack and Ryoma from Armageddon. The latter two have been mainstays in SRW for a long time now (in fact, I can’t remember when any other version of the two last appeared; was it really all the way back in Z1?), but every prior Mazinger option has Koji more or less still in his “hot-blooded teenager” phase. T took this opportunity and ran with it, with Amuro, Ryoma, and Koji portrayed as old comrades reuniting after ten years of very divergent lives. It was the absolute highlight of T’s character writing to me (and T did pretty well on that front in general), and I strongly recommend the game to anyone who’s a fan of those three and their historical roles in SRW.

Rayearth was pretty prominently featured on the more “super-robot” heavy routes I took in this playthrough, and I feel like it had a pretty solid adaptation all told. It was definitely the most “straightforward” as integration goes, with Cephiro remaining an alternate world and thus apart from the rest of the setting, albeit partially fused with the Byston Well of New Dunbine. It was also the focus of the “SRW doesn’t pull all its punches” moment of T, with Zagato and Emeraude’s deaths not only unavoidable, but played out directly in battle in consecutive boss battles.

Captain Harlock is Captain Harlock. I haven’t seen the particular iteration that is Endless Orbit SSX but I assume it’s a spinoff of the Arcadia of My Youth film. The extremely thorny question of Matsumoto’s personal politics aside, Harlock is an absolute legend as far as anime space opera goes, and SRW fans have been wanting him and his crew around for as long as I’ve been in the fandom. It really didn’t disappoint, either as a unit or just... the fact that Harlock is there. It definitely felt more like “an SRW version of Harlock and the Arcadia” rather than “an SRW adaptation of a specific version of the Harlock story”, which is definitely the best way to go in my opinion. While I praise the Koji-Ryoma-Amuro dynamic the most, Harlock’s friendship with Bright was also a more unexpected but definitely good dynamic.

(Plus, the Arcadia’s final attack involves Harlock taking a boarding tube over and attacking with his gravity sabre. Chirico’s pistol has finally met its match.)

Cowboy Bebop was... I can’t actually say disappointing because god, it’s Bebop in SRW. Like, who the fuck can complain about that? But at the same time, most of the actual plot of Bebop didn’t actually get covered, aside from a few adaptations of one-off episodes. While I didn’t follow all of its route splits, I never saw Vicious once, and Spike’s dramatic final feud with the Red Dragons was only alluded to in the ending sequence, when the other characters note his absence. While their confrontation is on foot and intensely personal, it’s not like SRW hasn’t put villains in mechs who didn’t have them before, or set aside a stage for duels while the main battle’s raging outside. Mightgaine even brings a whole thematically appropriate organisation for Vicious to violently coup in the form of Hoi Kow Low’s Asian Mafia. Really, the Bebop crew and Spike in particular were essentially played as members of the Arcadia crew and foils to Harlock, and god damn it I can’t even keep complaining because that’s the most awesome fucking phrase I have ever written.

Oh, and Expelled from Paradise was there too.

(Yeah I know that’s the meme but I also didn’t really take any of its route splits and I haven’t seen the original show, so I don’t have much to say. Arhan is a pretty cool design and from what I saw they worked it into the Astragius side of things well, but that’s all I can say until I finish 100%.)

Other Stuff:

I already mentioned that the character writing in this was great but I’d like to give a specific nod to the OG cast. It’s the first proper, formal group we’ve had as English SRW characters, and I’m very much looking forward to their appearances in a future OG series (in part because their name pays an obvious homage to Alpha’s Project TD). They feel almost like the SRW equivalents of the Dai-Guard cast, but piloting the OG answer to the 00 Gundam. That said, OG will probably give us Saizo’s version of events rather than Sagiri’s, and I can’t speak to his route yet.

Also, to bring this maybe around to relevant to some of the people who follow me on this website, in a franchise that has no shortage of willingness to completely rewrite character interactions for the male and female protagonists, the whole supporting cast ends up gay for Sagiri. Textually. So score one for LGBT rep in SRW... now where’s my Samurai Flamenco debut BB Studio give it to me

SRW and post-series plots has always been a mixed bag but I’d like to give a nod to the handling of G Gundam. Its characters have their own arcs in the “aftermath”, and it’s tied in to Getter and GaoGaiGar’s plots pretty well. Domon also acts as the “edgy vengeance dude whisperer” around Van and Akito, which was another point in the “good character dynamics” checklist for T. It’s kind of a shame that they removed some of the combination attacks (Double Burning Finger was a very telling absence, with Allenby playable from nearly the start of the game, and even if Rain wasn’t playable, there was a perfect chance lategame to give Domon access to Sekiha Love-Love Tenkyoken), but G was always a bit heavy on those (if I recall correctly, at least once Domon had four!).

This SRW also debuted two more non-show units: the Shin Getter Dragon, originally from... a PS2 game or something?, and the Bellvine, from the New Dunbine artbook. I can’t say I expected either; Show getting an upgrade in particular took me by surprise (in part for reasons listed under Biggest Gripe). This coming after Mazin Emperor G makes me very optimistic about SRW’s willingness to expand rosters and gives them another tool to freshen the post-series plot problem.

Biggest Gripe:

I could put up with it in X but please, BB Studio. Please get rid of pilot-locked attacks. Kamille and Judau, I understand; you’ll probably not take them out of the Zeta or ZZ anyway, unless you’re doing something like an All Female Pilots run. But let Roux fire the High-Mega Cannon at full power anyway, BB Studio, you cowards. She doesn’t get the Zeta in this timeline, at least give her something.

Amuro... probably shouldn’t have a pilot-locked attack in the Nu Gundam if you ever expect me to put him in the Hi-Nu (in order to use both units at full efficiency, the Hi-Nu ended up going to Haman).

But oh, the worst by far, is Show Zama. He has not one but two pilot-exclusive attacks, one in the Billbine and one in the... not-quite SRW-original Bellvine; so if you want to use both of those units, you just have to accept that one of them will be missing its strongest attack. (Though it’s questionable to do so regardless, since someone seems to have decreed that every Battler other than Show be given a mediocre to terrible set of Spirits anyway. Seriously, Marvel and Tod have no way to boost their evasion despite dying in one hit to basically every boss after Chapter 35 or so!)

When I think which details connect all these ships, I’m gonna say: Romantic, unconventional, imperishable, full of mutual love and acceptation.

4.What’s your go-to episode or scene when you need ship feels?

Generally In this kind of situation I want to watch some moments when the love between couple is the most visible, usually when between the couple there is some intensive moment full of love.

5.What song or songs remind you of your favorite fandom, character or ship?

Seal - Kiss from the rose 💕

It was a song when, while listening to it I read VK for the first time in 2010. In that moment I read first volume and I said: “Wow - This is great!” Later, after many years, after deeper listening, It turned out that the words of this song perfectly suit to the yume ship. From then on, I associate this song with both the first time when I was charmed by this series and with yume pair.

6. If the creators of your favorite fandom asked you to write the ship canon-confirmation episode, what will you write/how will it happen?

VK / Yume: A lot of things have already been said and done. However, I would doubtless make Yuuki and Kaname be together again (in the normal sense, not like now xp) and that Yuuki would say straight what we see while the whole series, but what hasn't been said directly - that Kaname is the love of her life and that she have never loved anyone so much as she loves Kaname. Such an expressions of feelings and the connection of these two after all these things they have survived (like in the case of Okabe x Kurisu or Mirai x Akihito) would be just a wonderful last chapter. In the case of anime series, I admit that I like the ending. And as for the continuation, we both know well how I would do it ^^

7.Do you prefer to indulge in (consume or create) fanart or fanfic of your favorite ship?

I prefer to indulge in create fanarts and fanfic but usually not related to my favorite ships.

8.Smut or fluff? (VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION xD)

I like both eqally ;3 Or remix 👀!!

9.What ship are you embarrassed to admit you like?

I guess none.

10.What task are you most likely to procrastinate so you can indulge in your ship or fandom?

Sometimes I’m able to not sleep all night because to the morning I’m talking with fans of sth I love, I’m watching my favorite serieses or watching/reading sth depends on it, don’t mentioning about when I’m writing sth by my own. Then the time doesn’t matter 💀 then anything doesn’t matter. It remind sth like a state of trance. - I recommend! 🔥🔥🔥

11.How many hours of the day do you spend reading fanfic or looking at fanart or other media?

In case of fanfics and fanarts, none. I choose to look for some nice edits or news about real series. I can spend from few minutes to few hours, but not everyday, only sometimes.

12.How many memorabilia’s do you own of your favorite fandom or ship (clothes, plushies, etc.)?

VK: The uniform of night class which I was sewing every day for two weeks so it’s really important to me 💖 I also have all 19 volumes, all DVDs, postcards, posters and badges. I will have soon also a fanbook ^^

I have also a lot of some little details from various another serieses like all volumes of Love Stage. But mostly I focus on VK.

13.If you could own one authentic item from your favorite fandom world, what would it be?

All dragon balls xD or at least Goku’s four-star ball 💖

And the Kaname’s bed - with Kaname in the set! 🥂💕🔥

14.What fandom have you found to be too toxic to deal with?

Since I have been on Tumblr, I got involved in only one fandom, so tbh, I can't answer it, because I have no comparison with another fandoms. I also don't have an intend to get too involved in other fandoms, at most superficially.

Nevertheless, withouth doubt the continuous ships-war is tiring and ridiculous. I've always wondered, why among zekis the some of them are still such stubborn, that they can't just get over it and admit that Yuuki's first choice was always Kaname, and Zero on the end turned out to be only the "consolation prize". This is a sad truth, but these are the facts. I think that the only way to real, honest coexistence is to accept this truth on the both sides. Just like when yume accepted that zeki is also a canon and Zero to a degree was also loved by Yuuki in a romantic way, though by not as strong love as Kaname.

It's all simple and transparent, it's enough to notice it.

The answer: "She loves both equally." is no solution ... "She loves one the most." - this is the only acceptable solution in every LT. Even in Arabic harems there is a division on the "first wife" and "next wives". So it's a natural state of things - one the biggest choise. I think that this is the point of attachment and the right, healthy way to resolve this conflict.

It's interesting that when the VK manga was still published, among my native fandom there was also a clear division between yume and zeki. There was no hatred in this. It was just something like a gulf. Then I saw the same for MAL and here. It inspired me to create a theory that this division is not only a division into ships, but also a division based on a systems of views. And in such a situation it's quite difficult to blur the boundaries... That's why I think that determining ONE plot is the most reasonable way. Later we can at most see, how much my theory works in practice, and in how many cases it's jusr an ordinary, superficial choice of a "more cool ship in someone's taste".

15.Do you have or would you consider getting a tattoo depicting your favorite ship or fandom?

I don't think so I would ever have a tattoo, but I for sure wouldn't walk past indifferently next to earrings or necklace with the symbol of Cross Academy ;3 - I love this symbol, it's so beautiful !!

16.What is the strangest thing you’ve done to honor your favorite fandom, ship or character?

It’s hard tbh... One time I created with my friend some dumb “event” which looked like “A night with Kaname” xD She prefered Kain, but she also liked Kaname so it was no problem to do it with her. All night we created a funny or pervert memes, edits, posts, games, and we came up with that we would print the posters of our fave. As a result we didn’t do it but... when I think about it right now, this wish is still “alive” xD ...

It was also one night, when I wrote some poem about sth like “how it would be, if I would kiss someone like Kaname”. I mean, although I know he’s not real, it can’t be denied that It’s sth really pleasant to imagine that in our world there might exist someone such amazing like Kaname. This poem was sth like a vision of kiss with the potential, “real” Kaname. It’s a bit embarrasing, when I think about it because this erotic was incredibly personal and intimate, showing not just a kiss but some feelings accompanying to kiss the real love. So yeah, it was very personal and some kind of mix my deep symphaty and love to Kaname character + the description of my feelings while a real passionate kiss with someone, when my knees are bending, face is burning etc + the showing an experience of romantic moment with someone I love. So it was about Kaname and not about Kaname, sth between in other words xD

I also love to say about VK and Kaname in some serious discussion on studies. I think it’s nothing weird or embarassing to mentioned about some aspects from mangas on such an discussions. I think this manga are not just vampire and dumb LT thread but there is sth really deep and interesting, forcing as to think and reflect about what is love, sin, desire, death, will of life, etc... I love this in VK.

Oh i should at least check that OVA later... Maybe I can do just do a CLAMP OVA binge, I could even add clamp in wonderland, that's exciting.

Volume 2

- Fuu's bluff to Ferio is amazing and 100% a good reason for him to be into her let's be fair here.

- I also adore the part where Ferio saves her live and she isn't exactly fazed by it but him calling her an idiot leaves an impression? Which makes sense bc she expects to be shielded from harm. I don't know this is quickly turning into a Fuu-centric feelings party, but i'm okay with that.

- "Swords don't work on that monster" sounds so deeply implausible and dumb in this story? Like okay yeah using a sword doesn't seem sensible because of the range of a flying monsters, but it still feels very "uhm im sure this huge chicken would get hurt if you stab it" AND THEN IT DOESN'T ?? GET HURT?? And yet... That's how RPG's work so in that sense it's acceptable logic? I dig it because it's one of those moments where, okay these girls are in danger but despite that it's difficult to take the danger seriously. This is still a story that abides by game rules, so it feels too much like play to really worry. It's exactly why this manga feels so playful despite the constant danger, which is also exactly why the ending hits as hard as it does.

Like yeah Umi gets super hurt when they get ambushed by Alcione, but it's also something that serves purpose in the narrative because we learn how their magic gets stronger when their will does, and both Umi and Fuu learn their first spell. Fuu heals Umi, and when that's said and done we don't really dwell on the hurt there.

- I'm also very struck by how meaningless Alcione's love* is. Like she loves Zagato and therefore she crosses everyone to the point that she's cool letting the planet die, and still it doesn't feel... Like a solid motivation at all, it feels a little flimsy in part bc Zagato acts so cold towards her. And yet it's not that different from Emeraude's motivations, except her love is a little more high stakes - after all, Alcione's only complicit in being okay with the world ending, but Emeraude's got to carry the guilt of it? The way the Magic Knights fight Alcione without a second thought because they think it's for the good of the planet versus the way they react to Emeraude as their enemy is just... IT SURE IS A CONTRAST. Heck isn't Alcione the only person they actually like... mortally wound? I'm not even sure if they realize she wasn't actually dead yet when she disappeared?

(*And like, Alcione's love not being recruited isn't the part that makes it feel meaningless, because that's generally not CLAMP's MO. Like, it's an intense kind of love that we don't get to feel the weight of from the Magic Knight's POV, but that obviously in hindsight ?? has to be quite Something since she parallels Emeraude herself. )

- You know what's interesting to me about Fuu's magic is that, her priority is keeping herself safe, and yet she's the healer of the bunch? Like it feels right but it's also very odd. Fuu stays behind the other two out of reach, where she can take care of them as long as she herself stays safe. Yeah.

- I DO LOVE THAT WEIRDO FOUNTAIN THAT'S JUST A FLAT LINE

- I also love the amount of times their armor changes, like, hello we're CLAMP this series is 3 volumes long hOW MANY DIFFERENT OUTFITS AND WEAPONS CAN WE JUSTIFY HAVING IN THIS ONE. Also I really do want to know what trick they use to draw consistent swords, because those are some tough designs (and even these are nothing in comparison to the swords in X... like how???)

- Presea makes their weapons and once again the girls all come across as incredibly gay, thank you CLAMP.
