Today we also celebrate the Venerable Gregory, Bishop of Agrigentum. Saint Gregory was born on the island of Sicily to pious Christian parents. By ten years old, the young Gregory had already mastered his reading and writing skills and would chant in the church. At twelve years old, he was “adopted” by the clergy and put under the spiritual guidance of the archdeacon Donatus, spending ten years under him. Desiring to go to Jerusalem to venerate the Holy Lands, an angel of the Lord appeared to him and blessed his visit. In Jerusalem, he was tonsured a deacon and learnt much about the monastic and ascetical life there. He also visited Constantinople where he participated in the 5th Ecumenical Council. While in Constantinople, the Bishop of Agrigentum reposed and Gregory was chosen bishop through divine revelation. Living the life of an ascetic as bishop, Gregory served his flock with great zeal and humility. Because of his holiness, some malicious people became jealous and tried to slander him. They accused him of sleeping with a harlot whom they bribed to enter into his sleeping quarters. Just as the harlot went to speak at the trial, she fell into a fit of demonic rage. The judges believed Gregory to be a sorcerer and through the Pope of Rome at the time, was sentenced to prison. Through the saint’s humility and prayer, he was granted the gifts of wonderworking in prison and his fame spread throughout Rome. A clairvoyant elder who knew Bishop Gregory from childhood, persuaded the Pope to hold another trial in which the harlot, who was still demonically possessed, was to be present again. Through the prayers of the venerable Gregory, the demon was cast out of the woman. Coming to her senses, she spoke the whole truth to the council. The judges sentenced the initial slanderers to be executed, but Bishop Gregory impored forgiveness for them. Having returned to his own See in Agrigentum, Saint Gregory guided his flock in peace and love until his own repose. May he intercede for us always + #saint #gregory #stgregory #bishop #agrigentum #agrigento #ecumenicalcouncil #ecumenical #council #holy #pious #christian #deacon #priest #constantinople #orthodox (at Agrigento, Sicily) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClRp_GTrnZu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sam and Mike were drowning in pilk. Something about this information was very vulnerable to him. It's smooth and soft and still very light on the ground. The wind was very strange and it was cracking up and leaving the world with some slight issues. Okay hang out a message to the rainbow And see me every day.

Weihnachtsmarkt - der Klassiker - Christmas market - the classic

Searching for a pastor has renewed my excitement for the journey
Our church has been searching for a more permanent minister, and is on the cusp of (fingers crossed) hiring one our community has befriended, through having guest ministers in the pulpit.
Reading the most recent profile that came in, I think about what my own answers would be. When the time comes, how will I represent myself?
There are many questions on the profile to ponder. What are my experiences with ecumenicalism, for example? And what oportunities will there be to add to my experiences?
In a previous course, I had taken a liking to Stuart Matlins "How to be a Perfect Stranger: The Essential Religious Etiquette Handbook ". It helped me understand how to be mindful and respectful in other religious environments. For example, my own denomination is quite casual in dress- this wouldn't fly in all other churches or places of worship. Some churches expect a certain level of participation- others do not, from strangers. Customs and matters of how to show respect vary.
I have visited Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Muslim places of worship. I know that the focus of ecumenicalism is usually to unite Christian denominations under common causesand doctrines, but I do not find myself so much doctrinally focused. Instead, I am focused on peace and unity, among all religious expressions (save for those that cause active harm to folks).
I think that crossing religious barriers in a friendly manner, working together and learning to understand one another is invaluable. We do not have to worship the same way to share spiritual experiences, and we all have more in common than not. My favorite experience was sitting down with the imam of a mosque. This was at a point where Islamaphobia was rearing its ugly head in our communities, as it often does over time. The imam, unfortunately, felt it necesary to explain to me (a college student at the time) that Islam is not a religion of hate. We should be promoting understanding and embracing the commonalities between us- so that no religious minority in our community feels that pressure.
As for Christianity, my own church has shared worship services with other churches in town. My favorite worship experience in another Christian denomination was at an American Baptist church. They had based a whole lenten sermon series on a book "Into the Dark Woods" (Eric Elnes). I had not read the book- but the sermon inspired me to, and it became a quick favorite!
At the heart of it, we're all there for the same reasons, grasping at our own conception of the Almighty. I have been to Methodist, Presbytarian, American Baptist and Catholic services. Congregational church services are such a melting pot of traditions that I recognized pieces of others in ourselves. I was at awe with ways of worship that I had not considered, and found meaning in. Yes... I think that the more we can gather together for a common cause or purpose, with people across the spiritual waters, the better off we are! Interreligious and interdenominational experiences will help us be more empathetic people.

A Portuguese Pope & C.S. Lewis
A few days ago marked the anniversary of the 1277 death of Pope John XXI. I knew nothing about this particular Pontiff, but the mention I read described his passing due to the collapse of the ceiling of his residence. That piqued my interest, but the following forced me to spend some time researching to learn more: “The name was a mistake – there was never a John XX.” One of the very few email…

Today we celebrate the Venerable Amphilochius, Bishop of Iconium. Saint Amphilochius was born in Caesarea of Cappadocia, the home to some of the greatest Church Fathers. He was a first cousin of Saint Gregory the Theologian and a good friend of Saint Basil the Great, becoming their fervent disciple. For about forty years, the saint dwelt in the wilderness in strict asceticism until the Lord summoned him to become bishop. When the bishop of Iconium reposed, Angels visited Amphilochius three times, summoning him to serve as bishop in Iconium. The angels led the saint to a church where a whole assembly of angles consecrated him as Bishop of Iconium. On the way back to his cell, seven bishops were waiting for him in order to ask him to be the Bishop of Iconium. He explained to them that he had already been consecrated by angels, amazing all seven bishops. For many years, Saint Amphilochius led his flock in wisdom and prayer, while also keeping his strict asceticism. He participated in the Second Ecumenical Council and was a strong head against the heresy of Macedonus. Many letters and treatises of Saint Amphilochius survive which are profound in dogmatics and apologetics. The holy bishop served his flock and reposed preacefully in the Lord. May he intercede for us all + #saint #amphilochius #amphilochios #iconium #bishop #angel #angels #consecrate #ascetic #asceticism #monk #monastic #wilderness #ecumenicalcouncil #council #ecumenical #orthodox (at Konya, Turkey) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClRpxw_rKEc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Grundschulkinder engagiert für ihr Patenkind - Primary students committed to their sponsored peer
