... I can't believe it, but much of what I would want to say is already written in My Immortal Lily and the Art of Bringing Me to Life.

To summarize, though, I'm going to have my hot take of the day.

The world of My Immortal is similar to that of "The Castle" by Kafka and "Invitation to a Beheading" by Nabokov. There's some internal rot, somewhere the reader can't see, that has manifested in this world run by delirium. What makes My Immortal different is that there is no sane, external, character, who finds himself trying to visit the castle or else sentenced to death for gnostical turpitude.

There's just Ebony, who seems, as the focal point, to be the manifestation of the collapsing of the universe into My Immortal. It's not so much that she herself has power, that she's the antagonist, but that she is how the world has manifested.

Everything centers around her and slowly collapses in contact with her. Time ceases to have any meaning, and endlessly repeats Good Charlotte concerts, and then the timeline collapses entirely as Tom Riddle in the 1940's visits Hot Topic and also goes to the Good Charlotte concert with Ebony.

Ebony is not the destroyer, for that, we must look elsewhere.
