Making of Monday - Tracking Word Counts
On Making of Monday, we share behind the scenes of one of our works past, present, or future. All the little things that would fit into a DVD bonus content section: cut scenes, outlines, director's writer's commentary, or basically any thing that didn't make it into the final version. Send me an ask if you're interested in knowing little details about any particular fic!
This week, I decided to show my word count spreadsheet that I've been meticulously using and crafting for coming up on two years now. It wasn't built in a day, and I'm almost constantly tweaking it to make it look nice and functional as I keep writing.
Uh, fair warning. This is not a very exciting post. Unless you like numbers and data, like I do.
Tumblr media
For the sake of my own sanity, I started a new Excel document for the new year. This is my Summary page for the year 2024. I have pages created already for each month but hide them when it isn't that month. I'll show the Overview page next after I've explained what you're looking at.
So what you see here is my monthly and annual writing totals. This only takes into account new words written, although the start number at the top of each yearly column includes my running word count. Each month's number is automatically updated from the corresponding month's page, and added up in the total column.
On the side, I have fun projections. So if I wanted to write x number of words per year, not counting the words I have already written, I would need to write y number of words per month with an average of z number of words per day. It's not something I pay too much attention to, just for fun. Below that is a projection of if I write the NaNoWriMo daily count (1667 words per day) or 1000 words per day, how much that would add up to at the end of the year.
Tumblr media
This is the Overview page from last year (2023) plus December 2022 which is when I switched over from my previous Google Sheets document. Additionally at the bottom you can see the different monthly pages that are not hidden (I color coded them because I was bored one day).
This page keeps track of my daily totals in the form of a color gradient, linked to the monthly pages to get the totals.
Solid Red = 0
Solid Yellow = 1000
Solid Green = 1667 (NaNoWriMo Daily; 50,000 words in a 30 day month)
Originally, the idea was to be able to look at it and see if there were time periods that I wasn't writing as well due to being busy for various reasons, so I could be able to predict in the future what conditions weren't great for writing. But an interesting side effect is it's also able to track my good days and my bad days for health reasons.
That random number you see on the right side is my highest daily word count. I was curious about it, but I couldn't figure out a way to make it look pretty and fit in with everything else.
Tumblr media
This is my month page, divided by each individual project. Y is series or event with multiple fics involved, Z is one-shots, two-shots, or very short fics. The greyed out ones at the top are ones I'm not actively working on, the ones in green are fics that I am either actively working on or trying to work on.
Also at the top are the new words added each month (which is the cell used in other pages to keep track of the monthly number), the total words in all my documents, and the daily average for the month.
The color gradient at the top for each day follows the same pattern as before; Solid Red = 0, Solid Yellow = 1000, Solid Green = 1667+
I keep track of the word count for each chapter, add the total, subtract it from the previous day, and boom, that's my daily total. If there are times where I delete things, I throw it into a document called "Binned" to balance the numbers. That way, I never subtract from the amount of words I've written, only add.
While it may look like a very simple sheet, it is very messy with formulas, conditional formatting, etc. If I were more skilled at Excel, I could probably improve it even more, but at this point, there's very little maintenance needed to keep it going and I can focus on actually writing.
In theory.

project updates. feel free to dm or send an ask for details on the programs I'm using
getting an external blu-ray player was the biggest non-refundable cost so far (around $65.00). I've found a free blu-ray ripper, but the trial period ends in a month so I have to work fast
I also have a dvd player (cheaper - $17ish, and also a present), and I paid for a yearlong dvd ripper program ($43) before I found the blu ray one. I have time for this later, so I'm prioritizing the films I want in high-quality first before my blu-ray trial runs out
with youtube premium you CAN download videos, but you can only view them on yt and you lose access to them once your premium account ends. I found a low-quality website to download most of rgu, but some of the episodes weren't downloadable
for films that aren't in english (prey, the handmaiden, cthd, etc), I'm thinking I'll just have to buy the blu-rays. I want them in high-quality and I want to see them subbed, but ripping them doesn't always carry the subs over. the handmaiden is proving so expensive and difficult to find I'll probably end up recording a library copy of the blu ray. I can do that anytime, so it's not urgent. and it's important to me that I get a high-quality copy
as I said earlier, anime series will be particularly hard to find copies of to download since I want to watch it subbed. yu yu hakusho is the one exception
tv series in general seem to be a challenge. I tried copying a disc with three episodes plus bonus content and it was a huge mess. nothing was labelled when they were transferred, and I didn't remember which episode went where, so I gave up in the end. torrenting might be the way to go for tv shows. we'll see how my next attempt goes
the ripping takes anywhere from 45 minutes to a little under two hours, depending on the size and number of files
once captured, videos ARE good quality and easily watchable on vlc media player or powerdvd 22, a program I kind of accidentally downloaded. I think I only have a month left on cyberlink, but vlc is a practical and sturdy program
I'm copying all my files to an external drive I already own because I just don't have the space. I have to delete all the movies from my PC once they're moved over, which makes me nervous, but I will have a little external library soon
having two USB inputs is great. it's something I knew I'd need when I bought this computer some...three years ago and it's really paying off. I wanted one with a disc drive, but that was just not practical :(

As much as I love having the entire show on physical media, the box set for the TMNT 2012 complete box set is a test of my paranoid fear of breaking discs when taking them out of stubborn packaging. Always so scared they'll just snap in half with a bit of bending, even if they'll usually be fine.
Doesn't help that the box set is packed like a can of sardines, since the show is split into 20 discs, all sharing names with 1 or 2 disc standalone releases. Based on looking at the listings online, I think what they did is just take each of the existing discs from standalone releases, then put them all into one big set. I've had the DVD just called "Enter Shredder", containing 7 episodes for years now, and I presume that I effectively just have two of the exact same disc now, just with different boxes.
The contents of each disc (as far as I know based on just watching the first episode so far, I've been distracted) are really great at least. The picture quality looks great, there's subtitles, and there's even bonus features per disc. Most novel of all to me: starting the first disc were some previews, including for Legend of Korra. I'm really hoping to passively be seeing the niche time capsule of when each batch of episodes was released, that's so neat to me specifically. Yes I'm aware I'm getting joy out of outdated ads. And if these sound like very niche praises to give a DVD box set, I should point out my point of reference is the Justice League animated series DVD box set. Those discs simply have cheap bare minimum menus, varying picture quality (some episodes being baaaaad for some reason), no extra features, and no english subtitles. Though granted, that set was only 10 discs for a slightly shorter show. I guess the compromise is to either scrunch the quality of the contents or the quality of the packaging.
But yeah, the disc box is a nightmare, so my mom found some small individual disc cases that were lying around and let me have like, 15 of them. I'd love to get a more permanent, less cheap-looking solution, but also I do have to stop and ask myself if I really need to spend money on more plastic just because I don't like the plastic I already have to hold something in. The answer is sadly "maybe."

CDmagic1408's QOY Miniatures! ✨
Quest Masters!
May I proudly present to thee...
my Quests of Yore miniatures! In color! 🎨
(cue group photo and dramatic photoshoot! 📸)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These six figures all come straight from the real life Quests of Yore game that was released just last year, and even though I myself got the game in June 2021, I never thought to paint the minis that came with it…until NOW
I began painting them back in April 2022, but only after three individual days of just placing color somewhere on them, I soon got busy with finishing up my college semester that I didn’t pick up on them again until two months later in June
From then on until just last week, I spent every other day or so painting these and now they are finally done!!
I absolutely love how they all came out! Each mini is definitely unique in their own special way!
Like any true adventurer on a grand quest, it took great courage, tons of patience, a dash of creativity, and clever resourcefulness to transform these figures as you see them!
My weapons of choice included acrylic paint, the finest and tiniest brush tips plus a toothpick (which is basically a thin paintbrush without hairs going all over the place), and a steady hand to accomplish this no easy feat!
And in the end, it was totally worth it! All of these characters feel much more alive and real with color on them! So I'm beyond glad and excited to have accomplished this artistic deed 😄
Now before I do a deep dive into each of these minis, below is a video I made where I did 3D turnarounds of each of them! I so wish you guys could see these beautiful masterpieces in person—believe me looking at them with my own two eyes, they are GORGEOUS—but I’m afraid this is the best I can do...
I guess I was thinking about how on the bonus feature disc for the 2005 Toy Story 2 DVD, they showed 3D turnarounds of each of the character models and the environments from the movie, and just remembering how much I would watch those over and over again when I was younger…basically I wanted to do something like that lol. As much as I wish Onward went all out like that in their bonus content (like for real I would so watch a 3D turnaround of a New Mushroomton street), that’s obviously a post for another day…
So yeah here is a closer look at each individual miniature with background music!
all turned around with a cupcake pedestal (courtesy of my mom) and QOY land pieces on top of a much bigger dish lol
The Manticore - this is the only mini I decided to really go by the book on, with the exception of one minor detail…I decided to give her pink nails like she has in the movie! if I had to name my favorite modern detail about her, that would definitely be it! but yeah other than that, she’s just too awesome of a character to be painted any differently!
Dragon - this is your quick IYTM spoiler warning but I based this mini entirely on Dragon Ian from the fanfic’s climax! I even made the pearl he’s holding the S.S. Medallion! and the ground he’s standing on is Gedeon’s lair! As my own text in the story describes: using the medallion, Ian shapeshifts into a huge aqua-colored dragon with talons, scales, a whip-like tail and all! so if you desire another visual of what he looks like during that portion of the fan novel’s penultimate chapter: this is it!
Gnome (Companion/Bard) - this one I wanna say was the quickest to paint because of how small she is. Her hair is partly inspired by Giulia from Luca. I know Guilia’s hair is a little darker than the gnome’s but I couldn’t resist giving this gnome a red hat and didn’t necessarily want the colors to clash. still the hair itself just reminded me of Guilia, so I wanted to give her a hair color that was at least close to it. Also being in the companion role, I decided to give this figure warm colors overall to give off a vibe of friendliness!
Cyclops (Savant/Wizard) - Purple robes with pink skin was my immediate first thought when it came to this mini. To put it simply, I wanted to defy gender stereotypes with this one. Purple is an absolutely amazing robe color! and it’s my second favorite color after blue! This purple specifically is plum and I think it contrasts the pink very well to the point that it pops. I also used the other purples I had to make other details shine such as the band on his wizard hat and his sleeves. lastly I wanna say that this is the mini where I found using a toothpick to add details was brilliant! It’s how I got his eye to be how it is!
Elf (Defender/Warrior) - if I had to pick, I’d say this one was the hardest to paint! mainly because I went back and forth on which colors I wanted to use for her. The last thing I wanted for any of these figures was to have them be dull-looking. But ultimately I decided to go in a slightly risqué direction and turn her warrior outfit in such a way that I gave her a midriff. I guess for an elf I thought she needed more blue than just on her face and hair lol. I also gave her the Shield of Zadar as depicted in the QOY book and the Greatsword which is on an item card from the QOY game!
Satyr (Vagabond/Rogue) - I gave this mini all sorts of colors but its main ones are definitely blue, green, and gold. Being a satyr, I kinda wanted to go in a nature-feel direction and to me that means green, brown, and gold, but also all sorts of colors since nature itself has all sorts of colors in it! Of all the minis, his expression is definitely my favorite! Tbh I don’t really know how I did it, I just made it work! Again, with a toothpick, and by putting down the right amount of paint I guess lol. But just the way he is, it screams ready for action!
But yeah there you have it, QMs! Those are my painted QOY minis!
If you have this game, if you have paint, and if you're looking for an art project to do, I highly suggest doing this!!!
I know the thought of laying paint on these guys seems scary and intimidating, believe me I definitely had those thoughts when I began laying out the groundwork for this, but as Barley once said: "You'll never be ready! MERGE!"
So my best advice is: just do it, don't hold back. If you make a mistake, you can always paint over it! If you're frustrated over how it's going, take a break! If you need inspiration, check out Barley's figures which are scattered in different scenes at the beginning of the film and/or any Onward book that depicts art whether that's the art book or the irl QOY book!
All this advice helped me turn my once grayed out miniatures into the beautiful and colorful miniatures that they are now and they're absolutely fantastic!
This whole experience was a lot of fun and I'm so thrilled to finally share what I've spent a good two-ish months working on with you guys!

brave lore: my first special interest was the lion king. i watched the VHS tape of the first movie so many times over and over just rewinding it the second it was done to watch it again until the tape was almost destroyed and then my family had to buy a new one bc i wouldnt stop crying. after school when i was 6 i would come to my great grandma’s house and watch the lion king 2 on the bed almost every day and sing every single song. when the special edition dvds came out i begged and pleaded for all of them. i played all of the games and bonus content over and over and over. most of my days in summer at like age 11 was just doing that. i think i only stopped when i got into my edge anime phase (post naruto) at like age 13 and then deep into ygo again which was another special interest of mine at age 6-9. when i was 3 my parents got me a simba halloween costume and i wore it until i couldnt physically fit into it anymore and then i cried and wailed like i was being killed bc they didnt make anymore lion king costumes.

25 May 2022: Combat Rock/The People’s Hall, The Clash. (2022 Epic expanded reissue of 1982 release)
It has been a long time since the Clash catalogue received any sort of archival attention beyond simple repressings of their main studio albums. In 2004, an expanded edition of London Calling (1979) was released that included a second disc of rehearsal recordings dubbed The Vanilla Tapes; this set also included a DVD including a documentary, music videos, and home footage. It came in a nice, substantial package including a sturdy slipcover. I wish Combat Rock had been afforded the same treatment. Instead, this chintzy package seems devoted mainly to trumpeting its second disc The People’s Hall as if it is a lost Clash album and not simply a collection of rarities.
Above are the front and back covers shown with the removeable obi strip in place. When I first saw this reissue, I was aghast; I thought the record company had altered the original iconic artwork, but fortunately they did not. You’ll need to be careful removing the obi, though, as heavy-duty glue was used and it would be easy to rip the cover.
Another lost opportunity here is there are no liner notes beyond a ridiculous, nearly incomprehensible, and largely Clashless few paragraphs of babble by Tom Vague, who edited punk fanzines in the ’70s (and who wrote much better and much lengthier notes for the 2004 edition of London Calling that I mention above). There is absolutely no information or credits regarding the twelve tracks that compose The People’s Hall. Based on my own Clash knowledge, I see that several of them are b-sides, but what of tracks here such as “Sean Flynn” and “Know Your Rights”? How are they different than the album tracks on Combat Rock? It is negligent to produce an archival reissue of such an important album and say absolutely nothing about its bonus contents.
Below are the front and back covers with the garish red strip removed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is the package opened once, and then twice. Vague’s “essay” attempts to discuss the “Free and Independent Republic of Frestonia,” apparently a squatters’ district of abandoned buildings following a motorway construction, whose “visa” is shown here, but if you can make sense of his ramblings you have more patience than I.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are both sides of an insert: the top is a recreation of both sides of the inner sleeve of original vinyl copies. The second side of the insert replicates an old promotional Clash poster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the booklet—just a few pages of Tom Vague’s nattering, and then a fairly weak selection of photos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last, here are the two discs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I adore Combat Rock, so with great anticipation I look forward to hearing both discs, but this reissue is a hugely missed opportunity that has the feel of a rush job put together by someone not particularly sympathetic to the music. (Watch, I’ll find out that surviving guitarist and co-frontman Mick Jones personally designed it all.) My brother bought the vinyl edition of this set, and it sounds even shoddier than this CD version. The decline in quality since the 2004 London Calling reissue is not just true of the Clash; there have been plenty of declines in packaging quality in recent years. Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series is another example, and, like this Clash item, those are also a product of Sony Music. Someone at Sony has made a conscious decision to do less than their catalog deserves.

20th Anniversary
move: REWIND ~singles collection+~ (2004.03.24)
One thing Avex Trax is really great at is sticking to its time-tested and timeworn approaches. The label started out with mega-popular co-ed, hi-nrg, eurodance groups like trf in the 90s, and every few years, banked on that popularity by trying the same thing, whether by forming more co-ed groups when everybody else had stopped doing that a long time ago, or continuing to explore and dabble in dance music and all of its various sub-genres, like super eurobeat and trance, long after they had ceased to capture the attention of the general public and disappeared from the charts. In the late 90s they did both with the group move.
move were the successors to globe, with a makeup very much like their godfathers: a trio featuring a woman on lead vocals as the general face of the group, and two men, one the MC/rapper, and the other the aloof, technical mastermind. The group began releasing music in 1997 with their debut single "ROCK IT DOWN," and coasted along with a pretty solid set of dance-pop hits before they began making music in the style of the Avex dance-genre-of-the-moment, trance. Their trance-pop phase lasted from about 2001 to 2003. These first two phases of the group's career were collected in their second greatest hits collection, REWIND ~singles collection+~, released in 2004, just before they went into a third, entirely different musical direction, unnecessarily changed their name by adding periods and using all-caps instead of all lowercase, and started declining in popularity anyway. The only thing that really sets this release apart from their previous greatest hits is that move super tune -BEST SELECTIONS- from 2002 was released as a non-stop megamix that shortened some songs and played around with their structure a bit to create a seamless, DJ-like club experience. This singles collection presents each song in its entirety, and also features two years worth of extra singles, in addition to the bonus track "T.R.A.P.," a B-side to "¡WAKE YOUR LOVE!"
Since I fell off the move fan wagon after they stopped releasing trance music, this collection is pretty perfect. It has their most well-known hits from the late 90s, and then the amazing run of 8+ minute-long trance singles from the SYNERGY album, like "come together" and "Romancing Train."
One thing that really sticks out to me about this release is the track list. There are two discs, but rather than proceed chronologically so that the first disc contains singles from the group's first, more eurobeat musical phase, and the second the trance phase, they are split across the two in chronological order, so you get a progression of half of each of the phases on both discs. This really works if you like both of the genres, as it means you get a taste of both without being overwhelmed with just one of them all at once, though it might not work so well for somebody who just wants one of the genres on a single disc, or wants them strictly in the order that they were released.
The limited edition includes a DVD that contains music videos for many of the singles, for 17 in total (for comparison, there are 21 tracks on the two CDs). Just about all of them feature the members in front of green screens or other abstract settings, performing for the camera. motsu does all of the heavy-lifting re: energy and personality, yuri does the awkward, zombie avex-sway, and t-kimura is always too cool to be bothered, busy being surrounded by keyboards.
The limited edition also includes a mini cellphone cleaner that you could attach to the type of mobile phones people used back in 2004. There's nothing fancy here, but you get solid content, and if you like this era of the group, this compilation is recommended over the abridged and inferior m.o.v.e 10th Anniversary MEGA BEST or Best moves. ~and move goes on~.

Class Favorites: Movie Rank!
This is a ranking of all the movies I watched for the first time in 2022. I didn’t review every new movie, but I will link to any reviews that I can. That being said, be sure and click the links to also see the trigger/content warnings. (If they are what you need.)
Also it’s not in reverse order because I can never be bothered.
1) Spider Man No Way Home (2022)
It was just good and gave what it needed to give. The “surprise” was very well done and definitely worth the watch. If you haven’t seen but would I recommend. Sorry no review, but I enjoyed myself and I’m pretty sure there were tears at some point in the watching of this film.
2) Lone Star State Of Mind (2002)
We can argue that there were better made movies on this list, but I promise you none of them made me laugh as hard and gave the comedic gold that this one did. Laughter is a strong sway and in a world that’s falling apart, I’ll take the joy of genuine laughter. Joshua Jackson and DJ Qualls don’t hurt either. It’s what you want out of a 2002 comedy.
3) Unpregnant (2020)
I think the movie did what it set out to do very well and that’s why it’s up here so high. Would it be one to get a quicker rewatch? No, but it was still a pretty decent movie over all and in the lineup it stood out as a good movie, if you’re into the the YA book to movie adaptations.
4) The Ultimate Playlist Of Noise (2021)
I think I’m just so in love with music and playlists and having a soundtrack to everything, that there was no way this movie wasn’t going to get a high ranking on this list. It was a little heavy, but still gave off more light than anything. Yes there were the typical he has to save her or they have to save each other, but at the end of the day a decent little movie. Now I’ll be honest and say that my brain didn’t automatically remember this one, but after seeing it in the line up it does spark some good memories.
5) Moonshot (2022)
This movie was good for what it was and because it wasn’t trying to be something it clearly wasn’t, I enjoyed it. it fell right among it’s peers and even out preformed some of them. It was cute, lighthearted and took a couple digs at billionaires and they’re gross infatuation with space, so it metaled in my book.
6) The Making of Lords Of Dogtown
This was like a 30-45 minutes documentary on how they made the Hollywood movie version of Lords of Dogtown. I really enjoyed the original documentary on those kids story and thought the movie was also done really well and this addition to that collection of things was well received, at least by the small subset of folks who claimed to have watched it on Letterboxed. If you watched the movie and just want more, but have already seen the original documentary, then this is a solid recommend. And even if you haven’t seen the movie, but just love skate culture, then I recommend it to you as well. I will say that it is a bonus feature on the DVD copy, however since I only got the VHS tape, I went and found a copy of it on YouTube.
Note: I didn’t rank this one higher because of it being a DVD bonus feature, but if it was a full length documentary it probably would have garnered one of the top 3 spots.
7) Cherry (2021)
We all know that sometimes the drama wins and I think that’s why I went and ranked this the way that I did. There were parts that were really intense and then there were parts that weren’t as great, but overall I thought it was worth checking out and something that I wouldn’t steer people away from, that is unless subjects of war, addiction and PTSD struggles are a trigger for you, then I’d go check something else out.
8) Elvis and Annabelle (2007)
This was a very late watch in the year for me, but it still found a way to make the top 10 cut. I liked this one more than I thought I would and I think most people who are also into dark, but still kinda light romances, would too. It pulls at heart strings and keeps you engaged, definitely one I can see having a small following behind it.
9) Step Up Revolution (2012)
I took a moment in 2012 to rewatch the Step Up series and also catch the ones that I hadn’t seen before. I had previously seen 1 and 2 and maybe the beginning of part 3, so this one was new for me. If my memory is holding up, Revolution was the most fun I had with the series and that’s not counting the first movie. It was also the film in the series that held a lot of it’s own weight without Moose’s character. Moose does show up at the end and does his little thing, but the rest of the movie fares pretty decently without him.
10) Too Young To Be A Dad (2002)
Since I didn’t post a review the quick synopsis is that 15 year old Matt Freeman (Paul Dano) get’s his girlfriend pregnant and the families all have to figure out what to do, when Matt wants to step up.
First it’s Paul Dano, so do with that information what you will. Second this is a “Lifetime,” made-for-TV movie, so treat it like such. Now I’d say it was decent for what it is. It’s not ranking at the top in it’s category, but it does pretty well in mid range. I find enjoyment in this type of movie, however I know not everyone else does, so watch or not watch accordingly.
11) Gully (2019)
Gully is ranked this low simply because it is so traumatizing. To quote my review cause I felt like I said it best then, “if you are emotionally tired of seeing Black youth being brutalized, even in a fictional setting and even if they are sometimes being brutal themselves, (product of their environment) give this one a pass. You do not have to sit through all that trauma because someone on Twitter was talking about how it’s a “must see.” Now if you feel you can handle it, than I suggest watching it with self-care practices in place.”
Basically the cast preformed very well, but it was far too violent and once again traumatizing for me to rank it any higher. Part of me thinks I could have gone even lower with it but since the cast did so well, while there were other just not great performances, it gets a mid rage score.
12) Expecting Amish (2014)
Another “Lifetime” made-for-TV movie, cause I dabbled in a few this year. This one was fairly decent, but it ranked lower because of the ending. When a movie is Oh-Kay, but it doesn’t give you what you want, you tend to drop it down several points. That all being said it has Jesse McCartney, so do with that information what you will lol.
13) Step Up All In (2014)
It’s the Battle of 2014 apparently. It’s also an “All Starts Season,” which everyone knows is typically filler. It wasn’t the worst in the Step Up lineup, but you could see what they were doing and even when you had a moment of fun, you were still kinda tired. It’s fun with the binge though.
14) Step Up 3D (2010)
I remember starting this movie forever ago, but not getting very far into it, fast forward to this binge of the series and I finally understood why. Basically this is the boring feature. It’s the movie they made while thinking they still had clout from the previous two and they were wrong. Again Moose does his thing, as well as Alyson Stoner, but it just wasn’t enough.
15) First Love (2022)
This was a movie that wanted to be something is didn’t deliver. It wanted to be a star crossed lovers film, but never succeeded in making us actually believe that. Yes it was the better of the Hero Fiennes Tiffin movies I saw this this year and it wasn’t the worst thing I saw, but I’m not sure I want to put something I thought was a little empty too high on this list.
16) Left For Dead: The Ashley Reeves Story (2021)
The quick rundown since no review, is that 17 year old Ashley Reeves was assaulted and left for dead, but later found buried alive and it follows how she coped afterwards.
This is an actual Lifetime Movie, based on a true story and sometimes they get them pretty decent and sometimes they fail and this one was not good. Yes the story itself is captivating, but the way it was told here wasn’t. It felt fake and rushed and overdramatic without the actual good dramatic parts to hold it up. It lacked so much for the type of story it was trying to tell and it just wasn’t worth the watch, unless you want to see all of them, good or bad. Good for it here though, cause there were worse movies that I saw in 2022.
17) Love, Game, Match (2022)
Students try to pair up their teachers, but there’s secrets that threaten to get in the way.
Another made-for-tv movie that didn’t give me any of the feels they are at the very least required to give. I’ll pretty much sit through any former Degrassi star’s post community school work, especially if there’s romance involved, but that doesn’t mean I have to call it good. It took me a couple sittings to get through this 1hr 25min movie because it couldn’t keep my attention when it needed to. I’m not a big fan of the word boring, but sometimes that’s the only way you can describe a film that lackluster. The goal is to crank out a lot and sometimes they’re good and sometimes they’re not, but a lot of time they’re just there on the Urgent Care waiting room TV making so the room isn’t totally empty. It was simply fine.
18) The Change-Up (2011)
2 best friends switch bodies after thinking the other has the better life.
I’ve been wanting to see this movie for a long time, cause i happen to enjoy these types of films, but after watching it I feel like it could have stayed as something I just happened to missed. I guess I was over sitting through that much trash with little reward and maybe that’s why I shouldn’t be picking these movies up. There is no redemption arc that needs to happen here, at least not with this one. Sometimes this particular trope or theme or whatever is done well and other times the fact that you’ve seen it play out several times pulls it down even further.
19) After Ever Happy (2022)
One had to come before the other and this one was slightly better and do mean slight than it’s sibling that came out last year. It’s a toxic relationship, no shipping, we’re just in too deep.
20) Zach and Miri Make A Porno (2008)
2 Best Friends/Roommates who can’t pay their bills decide to make an adult film with their friends as well as some paid actors. What once was platonic may be catching some feels.
I love this era of movie, but not even Seth Rogen being Seth Rogen could save this movie, especially with him dropping the n-word. (Like that is one of the most unattractive things I’ve seen him do.) It had points for some professions of love, but lost them. Sorry not sorry, but a sad one in an era that I generally like. I feel like if I had watched it back in high school that I probably would have found some joy in this film, but once again I probably watched it too late and the connection is lost.
21) After We Fell (2021)
This movie was rushed and I barely knew what what going on in relation to where we were in the story line. This story is a mess just like the main character’s toxic relationship. There’s just not much redeeming for this particular film or the After series in general, so I think it was always end up at the bottom of the barrel.

Gracenote: review and short description.
DVD is good enough: Blue-ray won a meaningless war, at a great cost for Sony. HDTV adoption is picking up, but it's still a trifling fraction of the viewing population. To top it all off, the war they "won" wasn't really worth winning. They won by losing their strength in the console market, and they won just in time to have the US economy collapse so that they can no longer count on sales there. They did manage to "win" the Blue-ray war. The way the US economy is going, Sony may have to actually increase prices. The US won't be seeing a price cut until the dollar stops its nosedive. Since Sony is a Japanese company which is based in yen, the falling US dollar is causing them to lose even more on every US sale than they were before. Check the reviews.Īs an added bonus to Sony, just when they were starting to get close to actually making money on the PS3, the US economy started to collapse.

Some people think seeing how movies are made ruins the magic, but for me it only makes them even more magical. I grew up watching all of the DVD bonus content, usually more than once. You don’t get a lot of that these days thanks to streaming. This series is amazing, heartwarming, and inspiring. It’s a love letter to the greatest visual effects artists of all time as well as the man, the myth, the legend: George Lucas. That delighted me because for years I’ve felt George hasn’t gotten the respect he deserves, he’s done so much for the film industry but he’s often reduced to “the guy who created Star Wars” and that can be a compliment or insult depending on who you’re talking to and what year it is. I loved seeing how ILM started as a bunch of dudes being guys making models for the first Star Wars and over a few decades evolved into mostly digital stuff and how George Lucas was pushing the industry towards that from the beginning. As a movie fan it’s easy to say you liked movies that utilized practical effects more, but this series does a great job making you understand why some directors and artists wanted to keep pushing the boundaries of what CGI could do and why that’s a actually a good thing, it also shows that some artists weren’t too happy about that at first and still aren’t and are equally valid for that. It ends on a cool note showing directors like Jon Favreau bringing back the old school ways of doing things and mixing it with the newest technologies to create the best of both VFX worlds. Even knowing at least half of the big bullet points explained in this series because I’m a know-it-all about crap like this, I was still completely captivated hearing the people who were actually there recount these things. Hearing a filmmaker like Barry Jenkins geek out over ATTACK OF THE CLONES was something I wasn’t expecting but I’m glad exists. This is one of my favorite series of the year. Directed by the great Lawrence Kasdan with a whimsical score by James Newton Howard. Highly recommend it if you are at all interested in filmmaking or just need to replenish your creative electrolytes. 10/10. #LightAndMagic #ILM #TVReview https://www.instagram.com/p/ChNP8h2gcNG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lingthusiasm Episode 52: Writing is a technology
There’s no known human society without language, whether spoken or signed or both, but writing is a different story. Writing is a technology that has only been invented from scratch a handful of times: in ancient Sumeria (where it may have spread to ancient Egypt or been invented separately there), in ancient China, and in ancient Mesoamerica. Far more often, the idea of writing spreads through contact between one culture and its neighbours, even though the shape of the written characters and what they stand for can vary a lot as it spreads.
In this episode, your hosts Lauren Gawne and Gretchen McCulloch get enthusiastic about writing systems, and how the structure and history of a language contribute to the massively multigenerational project of devising a writing system (a project which is still ongoing). We also talk about some of our favourite origin-of-writing system stories, including the invention of the Cherokee syllabary and Korean hangul.

A few weeks ago I stumbled across the Superbit DVD format, which was a Sony-exclusive line of DVD movie releases in the early 2000s.  The format enhanced the bitrate to provide a better-quality video display over standard DVD without actually increasing resolution.  It was discontinued in 2007 to focus on Blu-ray and other high-definition technologies.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Superbit before, I certainly didn’t know about it back when it was out, but looking into this it really seems like a missed opportunity that it never really took off.  Instead of trying to include more detail like HD, its basis was less compression of the video file so there was less data loss compared to standard DVDs.  The discs could be played in any DVD player without any additional technology or equipment.  According to the comparison articles I’ve found -- which bear in mind are all twenty years old now -- there was a noticeable difference in quality.  Nothing as drastic as the switch from standard-definition to HD, but enough to qualify as an actual improvement.
The big drawback was that the size of the video files themselves had to be increased, so to fit it all on a standard DVD (Even a dual-layer DVD) they had to strip out pretty much all bonus content.  Even the DVD menus were static, since there wasn’t spare space for animated menus.  For most people, when given the choice between a slightly-improved-video version of a movie all by itself, and that same movie with deleted scenes and audio commentary and behind the scenes interviews, it’s not really surprising that people chose the basic video with more content.
Plus, according to those same old articles the improvement over the standard DVDs varied from title to title.  It depended on just how much compression they had to use for the standard release, so sometimes the improvement was very marginal.  There was always some improvement, but sometimes it was so minor that they themselves admitted they probably wouldn’t have noticed it if they weren’t looking for it.  For a few releases they endorsed buying it for a second time in Superbit for the improved quality, while for others they said it wasn’t worth spending the money again if you already owned it.
I’d love it if Superbit -- or a similar less-lossy format -- were to make a comeback.  Despite the visual superiority of Blu-ray, DVDs still occupy a huge percentage of the home video market.  Some of that is cost to the end user (Even with prices dropping significantly over the past few years, Blu-ray players and discs still cost more than DVDs), but a lot of it is also a question of video quality for the original source.  Without remastering of the original product -- which is expensive and time-consuming -- you can’t just release an HD version of an old TV show or movie.  But you could release them on this hypothetical DVD format for a better viewing experience than the original DVD release of the product twenty years ago.   To remaster an entire TV series takes time and money, and a pretty large amount for both, but this would just need to take the video source they already have and not compress it as much.
Just a few weeks ago I was lamenting the lack of a DS9 remaster when I bought the full series box set, and this could be a great middle ground to give the audience superior quality without requiring a big corporate investment.  Still an SD release, without any need to re-render CGI special effects (This is a big hurdle for all late-90s TV shows when it comes to remasters), but clearer, crisper, and smoother.
The format didn’t involve any proprietary technology or equipment exclusive to Sony, so it should be simple for another company to start doing the same thing if they wanted to.  The lack of special features on the same disc shouldn’t be as big of an issue now as it was then, since including multiple discs in a packet is very common now (Including Blu-Ray + DVD combo packs) so people wouldn’t be as hesitant to buy a two-disc set with the special features on the second disc.
Ah, if only...

Where do you reccomend to pirate sailor moon? You've made me wanna watch ^^
Oh my oh my! This is a very no-no question!
Tumblr media
Honestly, I am obligated to say that all 5 seasons have been released on DVD and Blu Ray and are easy to find on Amazon etc etc and that doesn’t help people like me where amazon doesn’t deliver!
You can also IN THEORY watch them on the VIZ website? But again that’s not something I can access from my country!!!
https://www.viz.com/sailor-moon
There’s probably also an official youtube channel where you can legally watch the episodes or something I don’t fukken know because apparently I’m not allowed to do things legally.
SO! Other places you can watch Sailor Moon if you live in an ass-crack country like me and literally cannot access it legally despite being willing to u_u
Tumblr media
For the 90s anime!
Tumblr media
This is the most iconic of the Sailor Moon media! And the one most people know and are familiar with. It’s usually the first thing people think of when they think of “Sailor Moon”. There’s 200 episodes spread across 5 seasons (the first season, R,S, Super S, and Sailor Stars)
This site has all episodes both dubbed and if you scroll down a little you get the subbed versions as well.
DO NOT WATCH THE DUB!!! This is the original 90s dub and it’s.... not good....
Tumblr media
https://sailormoonepisodes.com/
as well as
https://gogoanime.so//search.html?keyword=Sailor%20Moon
You can also find torrents of the show. I haven’t updated my files in a long time but there’s probably been a Blu Ray version uploaded somewhere. I recommend checking Nyaatorrent
For the movies!
Tumblr media
If you want to starts with the 3 movies instead just to see if you’d like the show, none of them are as good as the show but it’s how I first got into the whole thing so they can’t be THAT bad! The first one is the most iconic but the second movie (S) is probably acknowledged as the best of the three. They’re kind of disconnected from the show so you need to know very little going in and it doesn’t spoil anything in the show itself nor do you need to watch the movies to watch the show.
You can find the movies subbed here
https://gogoanime.so//search.html?keyword=Sailor%20Moon%20movie
For the manga!
Tumblr media
The source material that most adaptations are based on (although most modern versions tend to rely a little more on the 90s anime as... let’s be honest... the anime had much better ideas in a lot of places) There are several places where you can find the manga, however, unlike a mass manga website, I recommend a Sailor Moon specific site which will have given much more care to the translation of the material.
The best place I’ve found is the ever reliable Miss Dream
https://missdream.org/sailor-moon-scanlations/sailor-moon-manga-scanlations/
For the Live action series! (PGSM)
Tumblr media
I was a fool for ever thinking the live action series would be bad just because the effects are terrible and the CG is laughable and they made Luna a plushie. It’s turning out to be a GREAT version of the story! I wouldn’t start with this one at all, but I really do HIGHLY recommend checking it out because it’s writing and characters are far better than they have any right to be in all honesty.
PGSM has never seen an official translation.
You can find fan subbed episodes at both Miss Dream as well as Sea of Serenity. They have different translated versions of the show so you can pick which one you like. (I’m watching the Miss Dream subs but I’m following a blog whose watching the Sea of Serenity subs and both are good)
https://seaofserenity.net/drama/downloads/
https://missdream.org/fansubs/pretty-guardian-sailor-moon/
For the Crystal Reboot!
Tumblr media
I actually don’t recommend this one, but I’m gonna mention it anyway because it DOES have its fans. (but again... I... I don’t recommend this one at all X’D)
It’s only done the first 3 seasons of the story and honestly only season 3 is considered passable to me. Season 4 is gonna be released next year as a movie (or 2 movies? It’s unclear).
The reboot was supposed to be a manga-accurate adaptation rather than the 90s show which did a lot of its own thing (for better and worse). However, poor animation quality, weird changes to the story, and making the girls lose a lot of their personality and turning Usagi into someone who is more a damsel in distress than anything, it’s not a great version of the story. I’m only mentioning it out of obligation tbh.
Although apparently Season 3 isn’t so bad. But still :/
You can watch the official release on Crunchyroll
https://www.crunchyroll.com/sailor-moon-crystal
You can also find subbed episodes at the bottom of
https://sailormoonepisodes.com/
as well as
https://gogoanime.so//search.html?keyword=Sailor%20Moon
For the Stage Musicals! (Sera Myu)
Tumblr media
The Stage Musicals are a funny thing, being not canon to any of the other versions. Sometimes they tell stories from specific arcs in the manga, sometimes they tell story that don’t feature anywhere else, sometimes they’re about the Sailor Senshi fighting Dracula and Adam’s first wife Lilith who want to turn the world into vampires. Dude I don’t even know XD
I wouldn’t recommend starting here either, as these are more like fun bonus content than anything else.
HOWEVER, the Musicals have something that none of the other versions had, which is “La Soldier” which all Sailor Moon fans are required by law to lose their shit over.
(La Soldier is BRIEFLY in the anime but it was not used to its full potential)
youtube
I don’t know if they newer musicals still use La Soldier tho.
You can find fansubbed versions of the Sera Myu shows at Miss Dream
https://missdream.org/fansubs/sera-myu-fansubs/
And Sea of Serentiy
https://seaofserenity.net/
Sea of Serentiy has the more detailed break down of the musicals by year, distributor, and theater/idol group.
I am the least knowledgeable about Sera Myu so I’ll have to leave that over to them. Little to no Sera Myu shows have been released with official subs.
-
There is also the ice show but that’s been delayed to next year because of the... troubles.
And there’s a bunch of other stuff too like the SNES game and drama CDs and stuff but I think that starts getting off topic.
I know this is a super long explanation to a simple question but I wanted to be thorough because although the 90s anime is generally the go-to, there are people who prefer other versions more.

PART 3 | A PREDICAMENT
「 Masterlist 」
Pairing: Kuroo Tetsurou x gn!reader
Summary: Somehow, you ended up agreeing to bring your non-existent boyfriend to the family Christmas gathering at your grandparents’. Your chem lab partner and fast friend, Kuroo Tetsurou, agrees to play the part. Your developing feelings for him won’t cause any problems, right?
WC: 2.6k
A/N: I won’t be posting for this fic next Saturday, so the next part (part 4) will post on December 26!
A smol guide to reader’s cousins (all ocs who aren’t really developed at all aside from their names which I stole from other anime hkdljf), listed from oldest to youngest, though I don’t really have exact ages in mind:
Mikoto Kyoka <Reader is here in my head> Setsuna (Mikoto’s younger sister) Takashi (the twins older brother) twins - tbh i didn’t name them bc they’re the youngest and not really relevant lmao i’ll probably just refer to them as “the twins” (they’re boys btw)
Basically I needed to name them bc it was getting confusing... sorry if it’s weird!
Tumblr media
The entire drive to your grandparents’ house, you find your eyes drifting to your rear view mirror and Kuroo’s headlights reflected in it. You’d left school in the late afternoon, and by now the sun has begun to sink below the horizon and dusk is beginning to fall. You have fond memories of arriving at their house for Christmas after darkness has fallen, seeing the warm glow of the lights in their windows drawing closer and being ushered inside from the cold winter darkness to their bright, sweet-smelling home.
This year is a little different - Kuroo will be with you, experiencing those familiar sights and sounds and smells for the first time. Your gut is absolutely twisting, and you grip the steering wheel a little tighter. Now is not the time to have second thoughts or wonder if it’s too late to call the whole thing off. For now, your focus has to be on making sure your family believes Kuroo is actually your boyfriend. If you seem happy, they’ll be happy. You glance once more in your rear view mirror. Convincing them of that may not be as difficult as you think.
By the time you pull into the driveway, you’ve managed to push most of the doubts from your mind. The cold air that hits your face as you step out of your warm car is a welcome distraction, and you fill your lungs with it. Next to you, Kuroo’s car door opens and he steps out, reaching into the backseat for his duffle bag.
“Here we are!” You chirp, spreading your arms in a flourish as he closes the car door. He looks at the house, then turns to smile at you.
“Looks really nice,” He nods as you pop the trunk, reaching for your suitcase. “Let me get it,” He reaches around you and grabs it. You’re startled for a few moments, but all it takes is a quirk of his eyebrow for everything to fall into place. It would be weird if you didn’t let your boyfriend carry your bag for you.
“If one of us is going to blow this, it’s going to be me,” You breathe with a nervous chuckle, and he shakes his head.
“Won’t let that happen,” He assures you, gesturing for you to lead the way. He follows you up the walk, and the moment you reach for the door knob, it swings open on its own. Behind it, your grandmother is waiting to greet you, hands clasped in front of herself with a giant smile on her face. For a split second, you almost feel guilty that none of this is real.
“Merry Christmas!” She pulls you into a tight hug, and you breathe in the familiar scents of rose and sugar cookies. “Come in, come in.” She releases you and is immediately locked on Kuroo, who has a sheepish smile on his face.
“Oh my,” She looks up at him with the huge grin still on her face, “Aren’t you quite the handsome young man! Just look at how tall he is!” Behind her, your parents appear as she’s gathering him into a hug. You try to hold in a snicker as he drops the bags beside him, folding himself awkwardly to return the hug.
“Thank you for having me, ma’am,” He says as he’s released from her grip, prompting a pleased hum.
“Grandma,” You finally break in to say, “Mom and Dad,” You turn to your parents who are both eyeing Kuroo curiously. Your father, especially, seems to be sizing him up. “This is Kuroo Tetsurou,” He lifts his hand in greeting, “My boyfriend,”  You add, feeling your cheeks grow hot at saying the words out loud. Your mother meets your gaze with a small smile.
“It’s nice to meet you,” Your father reaches out and catches Kuroo’s hand in a firm handshake.
“It’s great to meet you too, sir.” Your father must approve of the handshake, because he gives Kuroo a nod and a smile. “And it’s nice to meet you, L/N-san,” He reaches for your mother’s hand next. Your grandmother wraps her arm around your middle and squeezes you into her side.
“Oh, what a polite young man,” She whispers in your ear loudly enough for the others to hear, “It looks like you’ve found a good one.”
You watch Kuroo greet your grandfather who’s finally wandered into the room. “I think so,” You agree, sharing a smile with your grandmother. It comes out more easily than you expect.
“Alright,” She brings her hands together in front of her, interrupting the chatter. “Dinner will be ready in just a few minutes, so let me show these two to their room so they can get rid of their bags.” She waves you and Kuroo along, and you follow her up the stairs.
Every year, you stay in your mom’s old room. You’ve always loved envisioning your mother spending time there when she was a little girl. This year, an added bonus of the room is the extra futon that’s always folded up in the corner. When your grandmother opens the door, your eyes immediately go to that corner and find it empty. A quick glance around the room reveals that the futon is nowhere to be seen.
“I got it all ready for you,” Your grandma says brusquely, bustling inside and fluffing the pillows on the bed as she talks, “I think you two will be very cozy in here.”
“Where’s the futon?” You blurt out, and she chuckles with a wave of her hand.
“I had to put it in the basement. Now that the twins are older, they won’t share one anymore. Not to worry,” She pats your shoulder, “I know you’re all grown up now. Is everything alright for you two?” She looks expectantly between the two of you, and you swallow back your panic before pasting on a smile. A glance at Kuroo reveals that he’s remarkably unphased, at least outwardly. It sets you just a bit more at ease. You’ll figure this out.
“Looks great, Grandma. Thanks.” You let your bag drop to the floor, and she takes it as her cue to leave.
“Dinner is ready any minute, so get your things situated and come down,” She says over her shoulder as she heads out of the room, pulling the door against the latch behind her. You look over to Kuroo, who’s glancing around the room.
“I swear there’s usually a futon in here,” You say quickly, and he shrugs.
“I’ll sleep on the floor. I don’t mind.” You open your mouth, then close it, because you aren’t quite sure what to say. “I’m used to it,” He assures you. You aren’t quite convinced, but you don’t know how to refuse without making whatever this is even weirder.
You finally decide on, “We’ll figure something out at bedtime,” and reach for the door. “Ready to eat?”
“Since we left school,” He laughs, following you out of the room and down the stairs. “Bring it on.”
The meal is nothing too fancy. On the first evening, when everyone is still arriving and getting settled in, there’s normally just a spread of quick bites and snacks. When your plates are filled, you find seats at the table set up for all of your cousins. They aren’t shy about introducing themselves to Kuroo, and it shouldn’t surprise you how easily he slips into conversation with them. You’re all talking and laughing in no time, and it feels almost natural.
“Say Y/N, how did you manage to land someone like him, anyway?” Your oldest cousin Mikoto laughs from beside you with a jab of his elbow in your ribs. You rub at the spot and stick your tongue out at him, buying time while his girlfriend reprimands him.
“Would you believe he’s my Chem lab partner?” You jab him back with a smirk.
He snorts, “I find it hard to believe you wowed him with your brains.” That earns a burst of laughter from the group. “Was there bribery involved?”
“Actually, I think it was probably my brains,” Kuroo says smugly, his chin hovering over your shoulder. You resist the urge to smack the grin off his face and settle for swatting his arm. “I’m pretty much carrying this one’s grade, y’know,” He jerks his thumb in your direction.
“Please,” You roll your eyes, falling easily into the banter with him, “One look at our last test scores will tell you it’s the other way around.” He shrugs.
“I’ll let you think whatever you want,” He says primly, lifting a chip to his mouth as he dodges a second swat. This, at least, feels very familiar. As the laughter around you dies down, the conversation shifts again, and you’re content to sit and soak in the chatter.
When the meal is over, the cousins all migrate to the living room. Every year for as long as you can remember, on your first night together for Christmas, you’ve watched Elf. It’s one of your favorite traditions.
“Where’s the DVD?”
“I think Grandpa hid the remote again.”
“I know we literally just ate but could anyone else eat popcorn?”
It’s a little loud and a little disorganized, but you’re happy just to be here with them again. Every year the group grows a little bigger with significant others added to the mix, and this year Kuroo is the only new face. You lean in close to him and murmur, “Doing alright?” He’s been quiet, just taking everything in.
“Yeah, great,” He replies in a low voice, offering you a lopsided smile. “I don’t think I can remember anyone’s names though.”
“You’ll get there,” You assure him, giving his shoulder a pat.
“Lights! Someone turn out the lights!” There’s a scramble, and soon the only light in the room is the glow of the tree and the flickering TV screen.
“Psst! Y/N, sit down!” Someone hisses. You roll your eyes and plop down in front of the couch, leaning back against it. Setsuna nudges your shoulder with her foot, then grins at you when you turn to stick out your tongue at her. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see her brother and his girlfriend tucked into the corner of the couch. She’s pressed in against his side, and he has his arm around her. Kyoka and her girlfriend are squished almost comically onto the recliner, but they don’t seem to mind the tangle of legs.
Suddenly, you’re all too aware of Kuroo next to you. His arm is pressed against yours, and you try not to sit too stiffly. No one seems to be paying much attention to you as the movie begins, but you still can’t help but wonder if this is convincing anyone.
As if he’d read your mind, you feel Kuroo’s hand inch closer to yours. With a glance your way, he loops his fingers loosely over yours, slipping his pinkie alongside yours in a gesture similar to his pinkie promise last week. You lean in just a little closer.
As the movie plays, you feel the busyness of the day catching up to you. The familiar scenes on screen are lulling you into a drowsy state of half-sleep, and you hardly think about it before you let your head come to rest on his shoulder. He stills for a few moments, but then he rests his cheek on top of your head. You don’t move until the credits start rolling and everyone around you starts to stir.
“Aww,” You hear someone coo behind you as your cousins slowly start to stand up and disperse. When the lights turn on, you sit up straight and squint into the sudden brightness, blinking blearily at Kuroo who winks at you so quickly you think you might have imagined it. He stands to his feet with a groan and extends his hand, grabbing yours and pulling you to your feet.
Around you, there’s a chorus of good-nights as everyone heads off to get ready for bed. You turn to Kuroo and brace yourself for what’s coming. “You ready for bed?” Even as you ask, he’s stifling a yawn behind his fingers.
“Yeah,” He nods with a chuckle, “That movie really conked me out. Didn’t realize I was so tired.” He follows you up the stairs, and the two of you gather your things for bed in silence. By the time you’ve taken turns using the bathroom down the hall, he has a makeshift bed made up on the floor. He has comforters and pillows piled up, but you still can’t help but think how uncomfortable it looks.
“Are you sure you’ll be okay? I can see if there’s an air mattress or something.” You would feel awful if you didn’t at least offer.
“How suspicious would that be?” He laughs. “I told you, I’m fine. I used to sleep on the floor at Kenma’s all the time. It’s no big deal.”
“Alright,” You say slowly, crawling under the covers. Up until now, things have felt fairly normal, but something about seeing him lying there on the floor next to you reminds you how strange this whole situation really is. “Regret this yet?” You ask softly, propping yourself up on your elbow so you can see his expression.
“Nah,” He says with a wave of his hand. “I’m having a good time. Honestly. Your cousins are a riot.” You shake your head with a smile, but you can’t deny it. “I’m actually thinking of offering this as a service,” You feel your smile falter as a strange twinge fills your middle. You know it’s just another one of his jokes, but something about it makes you prickle. “Don’t worry, yours is the trial, so there’s no charge.”
You laugh to appease him more than anything. “Sounds like an easy way to earn some cash,” You say lightly, hoping he can’t sense anything off about you. “Ready to turn the light off?”
“Yup,” He nods, and you reach over to flick the lamp off. “Night.”
You echo him, then turn onto your back, staring up at the ceiling with the few leftover glow-in-the-dark stars that haven’t peeled off. You really had been sleepy during the movie, but now that you’re in bed, you feel wide awake. You can’t help but mull over Kuroo’s comment. Sometimes he’s impossible to read. You know this is more than just a joke to him – he’s proven that much already. He’s a good friend, and that’s not something you want to lose over something like this. With a sigh, you turn on your side.
“Hey, Kuroo,” You whisper, “You asleep?”
“Yes,” His teasing response is immediate.
“You can’t tell me that you’re comfortable down there,” You say softly. “So just come lay in the bed.”
He’s silent for so long that you start to wonder if he really is asleep. Just when you’re about to roll over, he speaks up again. “Are you sure?”
“Of course, dummy.” You say, huffing out a soft chuckle. You hear him gather up his pillows and blanket and make his way around the bed. You can feel it dip beside you, but he’s careful to leave nearly a foot of space between you.
“Thanks,” He hums under his breath. You don’t reply, but you smile into the darkness. Even though you aren’t touching, you can just feel his warmth next to you. It isn’t long before your eyes slide shut.
