The flat dumbbell pullover is an exercise that targets the serratus anterior, pectoralis major and latissimus dorsi, along with several other muscles. To perform the exercise, first set the bench to the flat position. Grab the dumbbell with both hands under one end of the dumbbell and lay your back on the bench. The hips are kept slightly flexed. The weight is held above the chest with elbows slightly bent. Position the dumbbell over your chest with your arms almost fully straight, keeping a slight bend in your elbows. Move the dumbbell behind your head until your upper arms are about parallel to the floor. Move the dumbbell up to the beginning position. The very act of bringing the dumbbell up and over your chest forces your chest to squeeze and contract hard. Doing this over and over will inevitably lead to more mass and improved definition on the inner portion of your entire chest. When you lean down to a low body fat, you will really be amazed at how well developed this area gets. In resting the upper back on a flat bench and keeping the hips off will help in balancing the weight and stability during the movement. Through my own experience with this exercise, I feel a deeper contraction within the serratus anterior muscles and rib cage opening by keeping my hips off the bench. Making sure to keep my upper back on the bench, I can arch my back a bit to get a deeper stretch for full range of motion. It’s helped make a huge difference in my physique, improving areas that are hard to target and turning them into strong points. My serratus muscles are much deeper and really stand out, and I truly thinks that’s from years and years of pullover work. At the same time, it’s conditioned my lats, creating some freaky lines and muscle. June 7, 2019 Upper body work, that hit harder than I expected. 3×5 OHP using the axle bar, moved a lot better than I thought it would under heavy load. 5×5 incline bench press using the bear grips to engage the chest and shoulders more. 3×10 front raises using the practice bar, better for forearm development I would come to learn. 3×10 dumbbell pull overs, 60lbs on set 1, 70lbs on set 2 for a top set, then dropped to 50lbs for a speed set.
