Or maybe you have no idea what the whole skeleton crew situation is with tumblr.

Now, we're not going to rewrite that whole post because in theory the link will still work as it leads to a reblog on our own blog rather than someone else's.

And also because new information has been gained since both OP made their post and our reblog was added.

So what IS happening?

The number of people working on tumblr is getting cut down a decent chunk. Not necessarily fired, but moved to different projects that have nothing to do with tumblr.

For anyone not aware, a skeleton crew is, by definition, just enough people to keep a website running. The bare minimum.

The OP of the original post is a former member of tumblr's staff, and the information they gained was obtained from a public discord server related to WordPress.

Current CEO of Automattic (the company that owns tumblr & WordPress) has essentially confirmed the rumours as true.

Is tumblr dying/dead?

No. As the aforementioned CEO explained here, they're trying something new to keep the website running in such a way that will generate enough revenue to cover all the costs associated with keeping it alive.

Because *gasp* running a website costs money. People need to be paid to manage the site, electricity bills to cover the servers and whatever, etc. etc.

Do you work at tumblr?

Haha, no. We're just fairly decent at researching topics.

What kind of backings will the pins have? And will the larger pins especially have double backings/clasps? (don't know the proper term..)

They are rubber backings! Most of them have 1 spoke on the back. Some of the larger ones like the Luna Moth and Jewelled Flutterer have 2, but I try to keep them at one each for these designs specifically.

If you're ever worried about pins falling off, I rec investing in these cool locking backs! I literally threw a jacket into the wash and forgot to take the pins off and they stayed on the entire cycle and more with these backings on.

Remade @jv 's post because it made every point that I wanted to share perfectly. He (completely understandably) turned off reblogs, but I wanted all the information out there in one place. (I didn't just screenshot it because I want this to be more easy to search for.)

The following text is from JV:

TLDR: most of the current staff is being moved to other automattic divisions and Tumblr will be run by an skeleton crew

Some clarity: Happiness -> Support T&S -> Trust & Safety Bumblr -> Product development, editorial, marketing etc.

The "reduction" don't affect Happiness or T&S because they weren't "Tumblr" to begin with, they are a different divisions within automattic that are cross-product (cover all the products from the company). So if automattic has (I have no idea of the real numbers numbers) 100 people working on T&S, maybe half of those were working on tumblr until now. But if tomorrow they decide to left only 10 of them working of tumblr, they don't need to move the other 40 anywhere: they are still in the same team, just looking at a different JIRA board every morning. Same with Happiness. So the fact that there are no changes in those divisions doesn't have to mean there won't be less people on them working on tumblr.

Technically, people are not being fired over this (though some of them had been, today), they will just be moved to other projects (WordPress, WooCom, Day One, etc).

For folks not incredibly tech/business savvy; this basically means the website will still exist, it will still be functional for the most part. However you may find that fun updates won't be as frequent, or full on stop occurring. Reports for harassment or bugs might be slow to reply, or you may receive no reply at all (from a human, automatic messages are still a thing) depending on the situation.

The wording states that the majority of the 139 staff in Bumblr will be moved to other projects. That means at max 69 people will stay while at least 70 will leave the project. That's at bare minimum cutting the team in half.

You should definitely save anything important just incase; less people means sometimes accidents will happen more frequently. Share your contact info with anyone you want to keep in contact with.

Prepare for the worst but hope for the best.

Hi not trying to be rude but your reply to "Tumblr will be run by an skeleton crew" post is causing huge panic and anxiety and many are saying Tumblr is about to die when its not. dualumina can done a update to the post about what is going on.

i am going to reiterate what i said.

i work in technology. i know what it means when something is to be run by a skeleton crew.

if you have "panic and anxiety" about tumblr dying, you should, because it is a dying website.

no, it doesn't mean the site is going down tomorrow.

but it is effectively dead.

i'm not here to make you feel better. i'm here to tell you the truth and post my feelings about it. i'm sorry, but just because a post causes "panic and anxiety" doesn't mean it's false or needs to be removed. this is another one of those "this post makes me specifically feel bad so i don't want to acknowledge it" asks and i can't stand those either.

the fact of the matter is that this website is not profitable and it will eventually go the same direction that every other non-profitable website has gone. here's a list of 350 of them.

my process for how i'm organizing and managing All Of This is probably kinda messy, but the current total is 157 currently completed requests and counting and (though i am not sure of exact number) about 150 requests to go through!

i guess that means i'm halfway there!

i am trying to at the very least finish most of the Round 2 requests soon since everyone who submitted then has been waiting for quite some time now. i received a lot of requests from that round alone, so i've got enough variety in there to keep it fun for me -

so hopefully, for the status update on your requests, it'll be sometime this week!
