no but like Bareil as Kai wouldn't have been anywhere near as good as what we got if only because he and Sisko got on okay? it might have focussed on his relationship with Kira instead which... whatever. but he and Sisko would have polite meetings where they agree or easily compromise and they'd maybe even chat a bit about their lives. which is nowhere near as much fun as Winn and Sisko barely making any effort to hide their animosity towards each other and the oh-so-polite not-quite-insults and they *have* to work together and they hate it.

also the revelation that Winn never had any sort of vision from/contact with the Prophets is great because it turns her issues with Sisko from possibly-just-xenophobia in a personal struggle with her faith and like... she loves the Prophets, she's worshipped them all life, all through the Occupation (at great risk) and she's the fuckin KAI and yet her gods seem to have nothing to say to her, even just a "hi, how are you, doing good work there, keep at it" but this random guy from another planet, who isn't even Bajoran, and who had never even *heard* of the Prophets before he got sent to this space station by a space-empire of unknown value/threat to Bajor, whose culture doesn't seem to place much value (if any) on spirtual matters, this guy... the Prophets *love* him. They talk to him and guide him and he's their Emissary and like Why The Fuck does *he* get to commune with Winn Adami's gods when they can't even be bothered to send her one tiny little vision despite all her prayers and - as mentioned - Being The Actual Fucking Kai?

So yeah I see why she doesn't like him, and it's a reason that has a certain sadness to it, it's not just that she's a bad person by nature or that she's taken against the Emissary for no reason.

And obvs Sisko can't stand her either, because she's Like That to him and she seems to be antagonistic for the sake of it, and yet they have to meet up fairly often and try to negotiate (some of) the fate of Bajor because he's the Emissary and she's the Kai and they're expected to work together to do the will of the Prophets.

Sometimes you´re out grocery shopping and idly browsing the frozen veg section when you suddenly remember that the queen threw up after Erik´s death when Wille said he´s always been compared to his brother and Wille threw up when he realized he´s going to have to keep being crown prince.

And you think about similar reactions to stress of parent and child and you remember the queen told Wille to take three deep breaths when he freaked out over Simon´s date and how she sends him to therapy to control his outbursts (ugh).

And you think where did it all go wrong that she can´t ever connect with her son when she´s obviously got some experience in that department. I think we meet her so far into her own history of controlling her emotions that she´s unable and mostly unwilling to connect even when Wille is outright asking her to be his mom (gah!), because oh hey, those would be more emotions she would need to allow to break through, and those walls are staying. Maybe in her mind even for Wille´s own good, to teach him how it´s done.

And there´s certainly reasons for those walls and it´s probably part self-protection and probably people telling her from a young age she needs to have them, and probably also because she´s a woman on the throne, so people would probably insist a little extra on them.

The most honest and raw I´ve seen her in the show is the moment she throws up.

(I usually question what she´s saying to Wille or August, no matter what warm or soft tone she´s using about what the court allegedly wants her to do, how it´s not really her, and how she actually supports Wille etc, as she´s been proven to manipulate Wille (and August in S2) into doing what she thinks is best for the institution she´s the head of. The one whose survival is always the priority, as per her own words.)

She´s shown to do royal business in what looks like pyjamas after all, the most casual and private of clothes, telling us there´s no separation, ever, that she´s always the queen. She rolls her eyes at her son after ending a phone call in which a rattled Wille sits among shards of glass negotiating with her (!), after she wanted to forcibly remove him from school. She doesn´t ever truly seem torn or conflicted, except that one time she throws up.

When her emotional core literally breaks its way out of her against her will.

No wonder she completely underestimates Wille and the depth and power for change his emotions hold after he´s finally allowed some therapy (that he could have used long ago just for growing up in that institution) and experienced actual emotional growth and healing instead of using it for control like she probably has. No wonder she and the court collectively underestimate Simon and what his love, what their love and connection mean to Wille. (Looking at you, Jan-Olof, allowing Wille a moment with Simon, you fool!) It´s simply been too long behind those impenetrable walls that she can´t even see it anymore. Until her son shows her. And you wonder if he´s even breaking through to her, or if she´s just been confirmed in her fears about his emotional unruliness and will dig in deeper inside her fortress. (Another time if feels like we see some honest emotion from her is of course in S1 when she´s visibly angry as she says that nobody ever chooses the royal life, so maybe Wille can relay Boris´ message about choosing how to live your life to her? Maybe she´s not beyond Boris´ wisdom. Anyway.)

The show shines such an unforgiving light on that institution that chokes all feelings and individual freedom out of you, especially over such a long time as with the queen, but I love love love how hopeful and defiant Wille´s journey of deliberate progress is in the face of it.

And I do hope he´ll continue therapy and never allows his own walls back up once they´re down.

a note for people who may not have noticed this:

at the start of chapter one, we get this view of Vash's wanted poster. notice that bit there about the murder of "Count Revenant Vasquez"

and then in trimax chapter 37, we see here:

Count Revenant Vasquez.

That's Conrad.

now the interesting bit is that Conrad hasn't died by the time we see that wanted poster. he's currently busy working to revive Knives, then follows him around once he's alive again. for Whatever Reason, Vash is being blamed before Conrad's death for his "murder"

which makes me contemplate a few possibilities. Conrad was present around the time of the July Incident. and not only that, but we see in chapter 28 that Vash was looking for him just prior to July

so like, What's The Deal? "Count Revenant Vasquez" is not "dead" by this point, just acting oddly in his big house. perhaps after July with his disappearance, people attributed his "death" to Vash, along with all the rest of July... but why would they focus on just him, rather than all of July? is this Nightow wanting to keep the reality of July under wraps this early in the story? or was Conrad really That socially important that his death would stand out among all the rest of July?

and another thing to consider is how Vash knew to look for him under that name in the first place. Vash was pursuing Knives at this point, the whole Point was that he managed to find Knives in July, but he did it by following the trail of Conrad. he met Conrad when he was a child, the second human he ever met, so maybe he somehow managed to deduce that Conrad was helping Knives out?

except when Vash sees Conrad in trigun chapter 20

he recognizes him, but he can't place from where. is this his July amnesia getting in the way? the general passage of time? it HAS been a century and a half since he officially met him. but if he knew to look for him by that name to find Knives, he must have known Conrad was following him around... and then perhaps as part of the amnesia of everything surrounding July, Vash forgot Conrad too.

it's interesting! brings the question of how Vash caught wind of Conrad's involvement with Knives in the first place. we do see that Vash has his fingers in information networks (like when he talks to the "shoemaker" in May City to try to gather information), so maybe that's how he found out? which honestly I find fascinating, given that Especially this early in the story, we just see Vash acting the fool. but even Years prior to the start of the story, he shows a level of resourcefulness and intuition that is Very much not congruent with his act of being a "fool".

and then he shows up to confront Knives in July and his plan is to just

show up, point his gun at him, and then... ???? something? which obviously blows up in his face in a MAJOR way bc Knives easily knocks him out & then has Conrad experiment on him.

which. isn't directly related to the Conrad point lol it just baffles me how smart yet dumb Vash is constantly. high intelligence, low wisdom build for SURE.

but yeah! I didn't notice the Count Revenant thing my first read through, so here's this detail for anyone else who might've missed it like i did

something we have discussed is how dennis was the only one who could understand mac and that's great but can we also discuss how it must feel for mac that no one can understand him

this seems to be accentuated by how off he keeps being about things (offering of war/dennis being shot being "awesome"/being unable to read subtext both with dennis ["figure of speech"] and donald) and how much he's looking for a sense of meaning that he used to find in his identity until s15 made him realize how pointless it was (in a way that reminds me of his crisis in goes to hell 2...), but legacy, history, money and prizes are worth nothing if your heart is not in it.

and in a way I think dennis is coming to the same conclusion which is why he's the only one who can understand mac.

dennis "you're just being honest about how you feel" reynolds, so concerned with authenticity and upset by the perceived lies when it's just his own denial making it that way. that's building the biggest lie of all.

if we're looking for the Point, then the point is to have fun and embrace feelings. Big Mo already showed this.

it's interesting to me how it seems that mac and dennis are working off of each other in the way sunny works as a whole. because if mac is the structure and the text, and dennis is the subtext and the jokes (it's how he's trying to communicate in inflates but it's also the whole reason he comes with mac in madbu), they kinda NEED to be working together for the show to work... they need to find their harmonies, they can't just one or the other lead, they gotta have each other's back.

and also like, a small coda. this season deals so much with nostalgia vs how the past really was, there's so many flashbacks.

becoming aware of denial and reality can feel really upsetting but ultimately it's a positive development.

if "the hair is a lie" chopping off the head isn't the answer, that was the old way of doing things (in times of war... murder, betrayal, beheadings... "we figured out what works a long time ago"), but now we're looking for peace. basically, death isn't the answer. building your legacy doesn't have to be like pulling teeth. "this doesn't have to be a scam"

it's a good thing if we start seeing things for what they actually are, because it means less denial.

there's something really soft and almost... careful, I guess?? about how Carmy says Syd's name, especially when he uses her full name and actually calls her Sydney (this kitchen is full of people whose love language is nicknames), and I cannot figure it out??? like there's something different about how he says her name vs how he says anyone else's and I don't think it's at all conscious, I think maybe to some degree it's familiarity; they don't know each other as well as anyone else, Syd is a central part of the restaurant but she's also still the new girl, and obviously there's this kind of instant connection and they have a lot of communication that's just half-finished sentences and understanding, but also. also. there's a bit of caution. idk I just think the way he says her name is really interesting and I want to figure out WHY he sounds so much softer with her than anyone else, even when he's annoyed

These tags by @clonecumber​ on this post about Jedi reminded me of something about the concept of “attachment” in Buddhism that might be interesting and helpful for thinking about it in Star Wars, especially with regard to Anakin.

So, for the Buddhist concept, the word that’s being translated in English as “attachment” is upadana. The literal meaning of upadana in the Pali language is “fuel,” but in an abstract sense you’ll see it translated as “clinging” or “grasping.” 

Buddhism says that there’s a set of factors that goes into how a person experiences and interacts with the world, or part of how they construct their identity and the idea of ‘self.’ In Pali this is kandha and translated with words like “aggregate” or “bundle,” coming from the sense of a bundle of stems/branches or the trunk as the union/aggregate of all branches of a tree. 

There are five of these aggregates/kandhas. One kind of kandha is physical, sensual things. If you think of material wealth as a bundle of branches, being greedy and clinging to/grasping for it is like pouring gasoline over the wood and throwing down a match, creating fire (suffering) when you steal from people, exploit them, etc. Each factor/kandha is something that upadana--clinging or attachment--is directed towards, and eliminating attachment/clinging/upadana is part of how you can stop creating suffering. 

Material things are the only purely physical kandha. The others include emotions (where fear gets a special mention), states of mind, and even things like how you view yourself and what you believe about the world. When Yoda talks about how fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering, he’s echoing the idea that fear of loss and change in a world where the nature of things is to constantly change is what spurs people to cling to things, to form attachments. 

When Anakin’s mom is kidnapped and beaten by Tuskens, he’s ultimately unable to save her and must confront a very sharp, painful loss. His worst fear from his nightmare has been realized. Instead of reaching out and trying to process/deal with his grief and pain in a healthy way, he lets anger get the better of him and he massacres all the Tuskens in the encampment. All he’s done is spread suffering and murder. This does nothing to help his mother, the Lars family, or victims of literally any party of ongoing land/water disputes on Tatooine. Everything that happened here was purely about Anakin and his impulse to take revenge, jumping down the fear->anger->hate->suffering train like a slip-n-slide. 

Anakin routinely has a really hard time undercutting his own upadana, his grasping at and attachment to things that must and will change, must pass. Whenever Obi-wan tells him to “be mindful of [his] feelings,” he doesn’t mean that Anakin just needs to check himself and do some introspection whenever he’s angry or feeling a negative emotion. He’s reminding Anakin that he needs to do some consideration and introspection for all feelings, negative and positive, to think about the relationship between kandhas and upadana. 

Anakin doesn’t need to learn that anger and hate are bad. He needs to learn that even positive things like love can be the objects of attachment/upadana, and that’s the clinging demonstrated in his inability to accept death and loss--however shocking and painful--as a natural process, setting him down Yoda’s cycle of fear, anger, hate, and suffering, unable to walk way.

#Not to compare Shmi dying to Clonecumber's big dog example but the part where Clonecumber says it's all about YOUR feelings #rather than the dog's welfare is the same thing I was going for when I talked about Anakin's reaction to Shmi dying #It's 100% about Anakin's feelings and it doesn't benefit anybody #I also want to say that Buddhism is over two thousand years old and there is over two thousand years worth of philosophical development #and commentary stretching across multiple countries and contexts #Other traditions also have a concept of upadana and they're also quite old and philosophically diverse #with different ways of analyzing upadana #I absolutely cannot do justice to that and I'm not the person to talk about that but I just wanted to say #that people have been thinking about what we call 'attachment' for a very long time and have had many and varied thoughts about it #I know the Jedi aren't 1:1 analogues of any one real world philosophy/religion/path but this is all still useful IMO #The Force reminds me of Brahman but I'm pretty sure that concept is fundamentally not compatible with a Buddhist view of things #star wars meta #jedi #star wars #jedi positivity #anakin skywalker #anakin #upadana

#it's quite. irritating. to be honest #there's so much more to him. would they even care if he wasn't attractive?? #so little fan content for kai. and the majority of this is superficial 'malewife' joke or as a part of a pairing or as a background #character or ignoring his actual morality and beliefs in place of something you can simplify for a joke or to make him 'good' #when it's so much more than that. the only thing he was raised with was faith and devotion. not the morality as we know it. #and that directly ties into both his lack of killing people and his loyalty to the chidouins #he isn't GOOD. he lacks any alignment of it for a very. very long time. #jestersvaguely #idk. i mean sure i called him pretty boy at first and i still will on occasion. but he's not my type and even with characters i do find #attractive. if their personality or arc or story doesn't draw me to them then i will draw them. sure. but they #wouldn't be my favorite based on That. and knowing me i might end up criticizing the story if it was a failure on the writer's part #to deliver a satisfying narrative. especially when those i find attractive are usually women and get That treatment #just. ugh. whatever. it's so shallow. #this is why i only trust my singular kai meta mutual enthusiast and myself to be quite honest. #negative

"I'm transferring you all to another branch to focus on your teamwork." Batman announced to the Young Justice League out of nowhere.

The news surprised the whole group. They've been together for quite sometime and had gotten alone just fine. Sure, they had disagreements here and there, but that wasn't enough for them to need more training, was it?

"We've been officially working together for a long time. Why do we need teamwork training now?" Robin asked, being brave enough to talk to the well feared vigilante that many were fearful to speak against.

Batman said nothing as he scrolled through the tablet in hand, obviously searching for something.

"Because you still have problems with your teamwork. You need the help of another team your age to get a better view point of what you're doing wrong. And hopefully you'll be able to learn about the different type of enemies

"Wait, wait, wait! Our age? You mean there's another team that we didn't know about?" Kid Flash asked, the news obviously being a surprise to him.

This news was a surprise to everyone in the group. All of them thought that they were the only young heroes that worked under the Justice League.

Finding what he was looking for, Batman opened a file and the team looked at the large photo that appeared on the screen. The photo contained four teens, just around their age if not older or younger.

One was a black teen with a red beanie, and Robin was surprised to see the bulky tech in his hands that he was using. What kind of outdated tech was this team using?

Next to him was a goth looking girl with raven black hair wearing a black short with a black and green plaid skirt. Her face was concentrated into a stern glare that gave Wally the shivers. The gun that she held in her hand didn't help either.

There was another girl as well. Her black hair down and resting against her shoulders. Said shoulders and the rest of her body covered by a black and red suit with a hoverboard against her feet and another strange weapon in her hand. A gun maybe? Red Arrow was curious to see her aim when moving on that board.

And the last kid wasn't standing. He was floating. With snow white hair and green eyes that seemed to glow everytime they looked at the photo. He looked to be around the same age as the other three, but he wore a black jumpsuit with white boots, gloves, and belt. On his belt rested a thermos? Superboy didn't see how such a scrawny thing could be of any threat.

One thing was similar was that how all of the humans eyes seemed to glow. Almost as bright as the- metas'? Aliens? -did.

"These are the members of Young Justice: Dark. They have been under the Leagues employment for three months, but they've been working on their own for almost two years and managed to stop several world ending disasters dealing with the supernatural."

The statement from Batman shocked the team. Them? On their own for two years fighting against the supernatural? Surely he was joking?!

"But-how? We've never heard of them, and they were world ending, we should've known about it." Robin argued.

"Because they've never left the threats leave their town." Came Batmans clipped reply. "There have been a few close calls, but all of them have been handled. As for why the League wasn't aware, there was interference that stopped the League from knowing about Amity Park. This is the team that took our place."

This was the team? Two years unsupervised against supernatural threats that they didn't know about and they still remained uncovered? Just how strong was this team?

"I'm assigning your next mission to work under them. For the time being they will be your superiors and you will follow their instructions if you come into contact with any enemy. Do not go against their orders or else it will be dire. With this, you will learn about threats stronger than you have faced and better yourselves as a team. Do not mess this up."

Danny as Phantom, bored out of his mind tried his best to keep his eyes open, this JL meeting, the meeting was about a cause of mind control or something, in short this was just boring,

he was here as a substitute for Constantine because that man ditched the last second, and left Phantom for himself.

His so gonna push the man off the ledge when he sees him.

Danny continued to dissociate, until he heard a familiar name, coming out of the dark knight's mouth.

"Ember? the popstar? batman do you really think she's the one doing this mind control thing?" Flash asked, he was also almost falling asleep until the popstar's name was said. "Man, Ember's songs are such a vibe, hope she's not some supervillain"

"It is not confirmed, All we know is that she might only be a meta civilian that really just wants to show the world her songs" Wonder woman reasoned, from the far end of the table.

"Until further notice, we shall gather some crimes she unknowingly did, and have her quarantined for the mean time." Batman stated at the other side of the table.

wait what? Quarantine Ember? His rogue and friend, no that wouldn't do.

"I need to disagree with you there Mr. Batman" Phantom called out gaining all the members attention

"And why is that, Phantom?" Superman asked for Batman, who only stared at the ghost with curiosity.

"Well, you did specifically said that members cannot, mess with other members rogues" Phantom exclaimed "If you mess with Ember you're practically breaking your own rules,"

"The Ember, is your rogue?" Flash said astonished. "Wait that means she's also a ghost like you, But why are you just letting her go around the world parading?"

"Yes she's a ghost like me, i let her parade the world because she's on a vacation I mean this whole world tour speaks for itself, putting her in quarantine will do no good for her or anyone, and the whole mind controlling thing is so last season for Ember, she just sucks the energy out of people who hear her songs so she herself can have energy." Phantom explained, floating down to sit on his designated chair. "Besides I keep track of her, to make sure she doesn't create havoc and overdue her powers, she hasn't mind controlled anyone that's for sure."

Phantom eyed batman who still remained, quiet, he looked like he was thinking of something deeply, whatever it was Danny didn't care as long as Ember and the other ghosts are safe.

"And how would you guarantee that Ember won't harm any human citizens?" Batman questioned.

"Oh that's easy, because I already told them what will happen, if they either try to hurt humans" Danny let out a smile that showed all his sharp fangs, his eyes glowed a toxic green, that made everyone in the room uncomfortable, his hair floated more aggressively and uncontrollably. "I think they got the message."

Everyone felt scared at that moment, just who the hell did Constantine, bring in here?
