“Yea so basically, I’m never eating a blueberry again,” you sniffle gently, cheeks sore from laughing so much over previous conversations.

Honestly, you didn’t think you were that funny. Or at least not as funny as Ellie seemed to find you. Every single joke you made had her freckled cheeks red in amusement, doubled over dramatically with laughter, spurting out in choked giggles and belly laughs as her hand grazed over your jeans, your own body leaned back against the couch you shared.

You didn’t clock how fake it all was until now, your blinking eyes meeting her own. It was only now did you catch the glint in her eyes. The little shine of frustration, begging for you to pick up on how her knees were turned toward your bedroom door. On how her knuckles were turning white with the grip she had on the poor pillow settled on her lap, or how her fingertips lingered a bit too long on the scratchy denim that covered your thighs whenever you made another shitty joke. Now you noticed it.

“God, babe, you’re so funny,” she hummed, chin tilting just a bit toward you. Ok, she was definitely being dramatic. The blueberry story wasn’t even funny. The heavy gaze was a tipping point, but her drawled-out words were the nail in the embarrassing coffin you had to lay in. She was totally just laughing to get laid.

“Ellie,” you scoff, turning further away from her. “That wasn’t even a funny story.”

Ellie’s cheeks heated for another reason this time.

“Have you been laughing this whole time just for my attention?” You accuse, eyes narrowing.

“Whatttt?” Ellie tugged out the last syllable, shaking her head in a totally unconvincing way. “No way, babe, you’re so funny.”

The auburn-haired girl leaned in, smiling at how your lips pulled into a pout, your ego bruised from your girlfriend’s obvious sucking up.

“El,” you whine, letting her lips find your cheek in a soft kiss, “Swear I’d never do that. You’re soooo funny,” she added.

“Oh my god,” your tone boarded on a high-pitched screech now, stinging your own eardrums as your eyes squeezed close. She couldn’t be any more obvious.

“Yes, Ellie, yes you can take me to the bedroom,” you eventually groan, three wet cheek kisses deep.

“Finally,” Ellie muttered, giving up the whole comedic fan act as a hand wrapped around your waist.

“You are so awful,” you complain as she hoists you up to follow her to the bedroom.

Diavolo was a lonely man. He knew a lonely childhood, tucked away in the Demon King’s palace with only the grounds staff as company. He attended lessons alone as he grew up learning what it would take to shoulder his father’s throne once he came of age. When the reigning monarch fell into his dreamless slumber, Diavolo had effectively lost yet another lifeline to anything resembling a normal existence-- a parent. As a young man (or, rather, the demon equivalent of a young man), surrounded by nobility of all kinds vying for his attention, he knew they only saw Diavolo, the Crown Prince. Even the brothers, who were the closest to being considered his friends, played along with his antics out of duty. No doubt Lucifer drilled it into them to be accommodating.

Sometimes he felt as though he was cursed-- paying for his original sin by bearing his existence, at the end of the day, alone.

That was, at least, until you came along. You, so small and fierce and human. You, who upon meeting him at the beginning of your tenure as an exchange student, held his gaze squarely and didn’t back down, even when he could practically smell your fear.

You, who for whatever reason, be it ignorance or sheer, unmitigated gall or something else entirely, didn’t for a moment treat him any differently than any other demon you met. Once you were comfortable living among magical beings, it was as if the floodgates opened. Despite horrified reactions from Lucifer and gentle chiding from Barbatos, you told him when his jokes were stupid (even if you still laughed), slapped his arm companionably when greeting him, and called him by a myriad of silly nicknames.

Your friendship is the most precious thing Diavolo has ever received in his long life. You aren’t one of his subjects, born to defer to him whether you wanted to or not. You aren’t an angel, who gave him a cautious respect for the good of your realms’ relations. You didn’t even know he existed before you came to the Devildom. You chose not to see the heir to the throne, and instead saw Diavolo-- a gentle giant with more love in his heart than he was born to carry. Diavolo, who would go to the ends of all three realms for those he cared for. Diavolo, who was loud and boisterous and always wanted to be involved. Diavolo, who liked cigar cookies and video games and could be a bit of a goofball.

He cherishes every aspect of your relationship. He loves when you send him blurry photos of various pairs of objects or animals you see when out and about, with the caption "us fr <3”. He loves getting links to dumb memes in the middle of the night, followed by laughing emojis or “this u??” You poke fun at him, bite back with quips when he makes jokes at your expense, and play silly little pranks on him. His favorite is when you gesture to something on his coat, only to flick the tip of his nose when he looks down to investigate. He’d long since caught on to that ruse, among others, but your bright smile and chirping laughter when you teased him for falling for it yet again are too precious to him to not play along.

He even appreciates the times that you turn down his invitations to spend the weekend at the palace with him, citing exhaustion from the brothers’ antics or pressing schoolwork from RAD. You’re not automatically agreeing simply because you have no choice-- you spend your limited, precious time on him because you want to. More often than not you made up for declining by showing up entirely unannounced some time later, cloaked beneath a spell to shield you from Barbatos’ sixth sense for his Lord getting up to shenanigans, beckoning him to sneak out with you to suck on thick milkshakes in some cramped corner booth and giggle conspiratorially like a couple of misbehaving teenagers.

When he’s around you, Diavolo feels like he can breathe. He doesn’t have to worry about keeping up appearances. You aren’t looking for political sway, or funding, or an elevated social status. For the first time in his life, he can set aside his heavy burden and feel... normal. He can ruffle your hair, and only half-heartedly hold you back from practically climbing him to dig your knuckles into his scalp and return the favor. He can laugh when you swat at his hand as he reaches across your plate to steal a few of your fries. He wears the friendship bracelet you braided for him at all times. He considered charming it to never fade or fray, but when it finally falls apart from wear, your mock exasperation when you tell him you’ll make him another makes him feel so real.

Diavolo was a lonely man. But now, he has a friend. A genuine, honest-to-goodness friend. You have matching contact photos, and inside jokes. You don’t call him my lord when he comes up in conversation; it’s always my friend. Now, thanks to you, he isn’t lonely anymore.

Take one look at this man and tell me with your whole chest he's confident. NO HE IS NOT. He gets so insecure about being a good adoptive dad for her. He internalizes the full extent of it but oh my god is he terrified she thinks he loves her less than Chayanne or only took her in out of obligation or isn't good enough for her in general

She makes him laugh SO MUCH. Her dramatics, her comedic timing, the Mexican culture things/memes she shares with him once in a while. Even when she doesn't intend to, she makes him laugh so often. Genuinely she makes The Horrors more bearable for him.

He hates not being great at words bc he feels like he isn't the best advocate for her that he could be. Example: when she was wary of the new eggs. He didn't know how to vouch for her beyond reassurances she'd come around. He wishes he could've articulated himself better bc he Understands her but can't put it into words to other people to the degree he'd like to.

He will literally never look at flowers the same way again. Tallulah literally overwrote his association of them with Rose. Now his first thought is "peepoHappy Tallulah!!" Instead of Rose. Rose is now second.

Tallulah genuinely brings out a gentler side to him. This man is hardened by survival and bloodshed and at least one death in his past. He's a bit closed off and suspicious out of second nature. She brings him out of that shell so easily, he doesn't even realize it's happening.

She can see right through his bullshit and it's so fucking funny. "I'm doing fine m8" and she's just like "[cocks gun] Doubt. Bitch. Try again." She WILL cure this man of his emotional constipation.

I firmly believe she'll be the one to motivate Phil to finally build smth on a Hardcore Project scale one day. Somehow. He'd do it for her.

If he ever says he doesn't like when she acts like a little shit, don't listen to him. He's lying through his teeth. Tallulah being a little shit amuses him endlessly.

One of the reasons he was most salty about The Reset was because it meant they can't go to Tallulah's botanical garden, her farm in the wall, or any of her other cool builds

(this was for an ask meme I did a few months ago, I just randomly got the urge to write for it since I didn't delete!)

Clinking glasses and lively conversation bustled behind you and Arthur as the two of you sat at the counter, drinks in hand. While the atmosphere around you bubbled with fun, there was a wave of depression surrounding you, and Arthur tapped his fingers rhythmically against the counter. Debating internally.

Should he cut this get together short? Drinking together was usually fun, and god knows he sometimes needed the liquid courage to get things off his chest, but you moped with the glass of alcohol cupped in your hands, pouting at it.

He let out a sigh, resigned.

"Dove-"

"I just don't know what to do, Arthur! He's drving me crazy."

He watched you put your forehead on the table, nodding wryly to himself. It was one of those nights, where you cursed existance for birthing his partner in crime: Theo.

Ever since you had came to the mansion, it was as if sparks shot off between you and the art dealer any time the two of you were in the same room. Any remark he gave, you shot back with twice the snark, often leading to bickering.

Arthur had thought something else was going on, though, with how the fights had simmered down. Though, he should offer an ear to you like you had for him many a time. He settled in his seat, preparing for the usual lamenting.

"How so, luv?"

"Just- everything! God, he's been dragging me around while he meets with clients, and while we're with them he's fine! But the moment we're alone, he just..." You sighed, waving your hand dismissively, "you know how he is."

"Mhm."

"Why can't he just be like he is during those meetings? He's actually nice then, you know. And he gets this spark in his eye when they discuss the paintings in question, especially if it's one of the artists he personally knows..." Your fingers weaved through your hair, another hefty sigh escaping you.

Could Arthur blame you? The man was always rough around the edges, but spotting this side of Theo usually changed many opinions. That, and when he had too much to drink- but you haven't been lucky enough to catch that yet.

With a huff, you slouched against the counter.

"I hate him. I hate him, with his stupid low voice, and his perfect hair, and those pretty ocean eyes, and that damned handsome smile..."

It was as if the whole tavern stopped- Arthur tuned out the background noise to replay what you had just said in his head again, trying to make sure he heard just right. But he needn't go through the trouble, not with how your face changed into hues of embarrasment the longer he stayed silent, your own words hitting you in realization.

"Come again?"

"N-No, I don't think I should- I mean-! Oh god, Arthur, please don't tell him-"

"After how you told daddy dearest about my last exploit in the mansion? I hate to say it, luv, but karma may be catching up to you-"

"Arthur!!!"

I think he is all talk with this HAHA I don't think he'll tell Theo, not when he knows you'll let it slip yourself. But he'll def tease you while you're all three in the same room, just so you fluster even more around him.

Hi, my friend has a chronic illness that flares up sometimes and we've been wanting to hang out but it has gotten cancelled a couple times lately bc of her not feeling well enough on the day. I want to ask her how she feels cuz I care abt her a lot and want an update but 1, I don't want her to feel pressured or like I'm asking just to ask can we hang out now, and not bc I care abt how she's feeling (does that make sense? I may be overthinking this) and 2, I genuinely wanna know how she's doing but idk what to say if she responds with her not being better, sometimes u don't feel better and that's ok but I always want to offer comfort somehow or just convey my friendship? but I feel the same everytime and don't want to sound repetitive ?

Any thoughts?

this is really kind of you & it means so much to me that you want to support your friend & are putting so much thought into it! my response is inherently based in my own experience to an extent & everybody’s different, but a lot if not all of this is stuff i’ve heard regularly from other chronically ill people. of course, don’t say anything you don’t mean – if some of this isn’t the case for you, just adapt accordingly :)

i understand worrying about being repetitive but i think that’s totally okay to do! for one thing, it can be difficult to remember things period when you’re ill, especially during a flare, & for another, internalized + societal ableism is a hell of a force. it never hurts to have a reminder that not everyone is trying to force ableist expectations onto you + your friendship & that someone cares about you!

i think you can definitely tell your friend pretty much what you told me! like, “hey, it’s okay if you aren’t feeling up for responding but i just wanted to check on you! not trying to pressure you to hang out or anything, i just care about you & how you’re doing”

honestly the most important + supportive thing people have ever told me is that it’s okay if the answer is “bad.” i’m literally like surprised pikachu meme every time somebody offers to let me vent about having a rough time & then it helps me just to talk about it. it’s really socially unacceptable to talk about chronic pain & a lot of people get frustrated when you’re complaining about the same thing & there’s not really anything they can do, so just the opportunity to be like “yeah shit fucking sucks right now” means a lot.

obv the appropriateness of this depends on the person & their relationship to disability but most of the time i’m very like, radical acceptance / embracing / etc about the fact that i’m probably just gonna get sicker, so sometimes when i’m having a rough time emotionally & am like “what if i’m this bad for the rest of my life” my gf (who doesn’t have chronic pain / chronic illness) will say something like “then i can’t wait to be there with you ❤️” & it’s more meaningful to me than i can begin to put into words.

again everybody’s different but for me one of the biggest things is when disability stuff just… isn’t a big deal to the other person. which, it’s totally okay for you to need support from others when someone you care about is going through a hard time & when things change! but abled people are constantly horrified about like, every aspect of my life, so being able to talk casually about symptoms & somebody mirror the mood / tone i set – laugh if i’m joking, be upset about the ableism i experience & not my body itself if i’m complaining about people being weird about it, taking things as they come – is so affirming.

other things that have been helpful + meaningful for me are friends sending me notes, stickers, & art in the mail – having something tangible can make me feel more “real” & part of the world, something i struggle with due to being homebound – & peer support around medical neglect, which often just looks like talking to someone after a doctor’s appointment & them reaffirming my reality / experiences & saying i didn’t deserve to be treated that way.

oh one other change in language i’ve made over time & probably picked up from a few other ill people in my life is a sort of realistic encouragement – there’s not necessarily anything wrong with “i hope you feel better soon!” because like, i get that the message is well-intentioned, but it can be awkward & difficult to receive when you don’t know if that’s gonna happen. instead, i try to tell people something like “i hope you get a bit of relief soon” or “i hope things are a little easier tomorrow.” a 7/10 pain day may be horrifying for most people, but when you’ve had a streak of 9s, it can be a much-needed taking the edge off, & i try to make space for that breadth of experience in my language.
