also can I just say. the difference between the joy of fit and bagi having a full day with blue, getting acquainted with the base, reuniting with their loved ones, all relieved to have more materials and more of a team - and then the absolute misery of etoiles and roier, moving the few valuable possessions red has to a new base that got immediately discovered anyway, losing all their gear, getting it back, then burning it themselves before killing eachother, is just so fucking funny. the new blues had freshman orientation while the new reds had a trial by fire canon event

Why is the anime so weird, it's not even the same series dude?? It's like,
Anime:
GOKU: I have a great idea to bring peace to the universe, and my leadership and compassion alone will unite us all. I have No Flaws and am A True Relatable Everyman :)
VEGETA: NO! I AM THE BEST AND I WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS UNTIL I AM RECOGNIZED AS SUCH!!!!
Manga:
GOKU: Vegeta what's cornmeal made of? I know it's what the corn eats, but what's it made of? VEGETA: Hey Kakarot let's play the quiet game until one of us dies.
#silly hours#I do not understand this writing it's so bad aklsdlkasjd#Toei wants Goku to be Clark Kent SO bad and he SO isn't lmao#they're so good and dumb and rounded and complex in the manga what is the anime so afraid of#Toriyama said 'no no this man is a detached faux-immortal who has a dear pure heart but he's childlike and selfish even though he's kind'#and toei went 'got it goku's never done anything wrong ever in his life'#toriyama said 'Vegeta's gone through a lot and he's finally settling into his more mature leadership role with the confidence he's earned'#and toei said 'got it vegeta has the confidence of a high school bully except now he can interact with his family as a comedy bit'#girl hWHAT#Toei trying to group Goku and Vegeta as two people who would rather train than be with their families and Toriyama said NO Vegeta wants#to be HOME this is the first time in years that he's HAD ONE and it makes him HAPPY to be with his wife and children!!#Vegeta trains so that he can protect the things he doesn't want to lose again and Goku trains because it's the thing that makes him happies#They are NOT the same lmao And yeah Vegeta still wants to beat Goku but he also knows that Gohan could dogwalk both of them if he wanted#He also knows Trunks and Goten are going to surpass them it's not about being the best anymore he's past that he just wants to Not Need Gok#He just doesn't want to have to rely on Goku to save the day he wants to be Enough on his own he just wants to know he can be#because every time it's mattered he WASN'T and people he loved were lost to his inability to protect them and he carries that#Like Whis diagnosed him with anxiety and cptsd out in the open and Beerus said he was self-centered for feeling guilt#+ he lowkey enjoys the rivalry it keeps him goal-oriented so he can't get complacent and lazy which is what triggered his Buu Saga breakdow#realized how Fucked Up it was that having a home and loving family made him feel like he was failing and went 'wait no I won actually??'#now he's chill as fuck in the manga. cool confident leader.#and sometimes he is childish and dumb with Goku as a treat#you know what rocks about his rivalry with Goku in Super though is that it's Playful. Vegeta is learning how to Play.#You ever seen a shelter dog get introduced to a really playful dog and it takes a minute for the shelter dog to understand it's safe here#And then they're both running around the backyard playing hot potato with one braincell?? That's Goku and Vegeta's relationship#and the way the anime sleeps on that dynamic is so fucking criminal especially when it's literally canon it's in print it's out there#you had the playbook how'd you fumble it this bad#anyway that's my 25+ year blorbo thoughts I love Geets a lot okay#And I love Goku in the manga a lot I'd forgotten that he's actually a great character when Toei's not fucking up his whole vibe

You know what, while I’m being irrationally angry about how people interpret fiction differently than me, I would also like to rail against the interpretation that the Long Siege was passive, and not an active attempt to regain the silmarils.
CAN YOU FUCKING IMAGINE THINKING THAT HUNDREDS OF YEARS OF SLOW GRINDING WARFARE IS PASSIVE. CAN YOU? It’s like saying that Gondor was passive and ambivalent about Mordor because they didn’t succeed in taking it out. BAFFLING.
Like, please stop and spend like, two minutes imagining how things would have gone for Beleriand if the sons of Feanor had pulled a Luthien. If they just snuck in to Angband, snatched the silmarils, and the fucked off out of the war effort forever because they got theirs.
How long d’you think it would take for Morgoth to flood forces through the entire eastern frontier? How long d’you think it would take until Doriath was actively under direct siege, without convenient Noldor buffer states on their flanks?
For that matter, how long do we think it would take for Morgoth to reclaim the silmarils, with the sons of Feanor get them without defeating Morgoth first?
How long do you think DORIATH would keep their silmaril, without the majority of the exiled Noldor standing between Doriath and Morgoth???
Luthien (and Beren) can do what they do because Luthien does not, as far as I can tell, actually take any interest in the well-being of the vast majority of people living in Beleriand. She is not a queen. She doesn’t seem to take any interest in politics. She doesn’t seem to take any interest in the well-being of the people of Doriath or Nargothrond, either! Luthien can get in and get out because she needs one (1) sparkling rock to convince her boyfriend that he can marry her honorably. She doesn’t need to worry about direct pursuit because she has the exiled noldor and her mom standing between her (and everyone she cares about) and the war.
THE SONS OF FEANOR DO NOT HAVE THAT LUXURY. If they want to claim the silmarils in a way that doesn’t fuck over everyone in their faction by drawing  direct, targeted attacks from Morgoth, they need to defeat Morgoth first. That is the only way for them to claim the silmarils sustainably. They are actually pursing their goal in the slow, safe, smart way.

No but it’s the way Jess and Lorelai can barely be in the same room with each other, barely stand to look at each other, because when they do the discomfort is just too much because they don’t just see someone so far removed and different from one another they also see themselves.
If Lorelai looks at Jess too long she’ll see her own restlessness, her own rage, her need to claw her way out of the metaphorical room she was locked in and run as far away as possible. She sees a version of herself that won’t get a surprise key to freedom, a version still running head first into a concrete wall and it’s terrifying. And even worse she sees herself turning into the kind of person 16 year old Lorelai would feel judged and limited by.
Jess looks at Lorelai for too long and it’s like a damn funhouse mirror. Here is an alternate universe Jess 16 years down the line and she’s got all the quips and the intelligence and the snarky humour and avoidant tendencies. Here is a version of him that will spend so many years building a life for herself and trying to show everyone that she really did it she really made it and she’s happy and safe and successful but it will never be enough they will never let her forget that at her core she is a fuck up.
They can’t look at each other for too long because then they’ll have to look at all the things about themselves that they don’t want to admit is part of them. Lorelai’s grief and rage over how her parents could never really see her as much more than a «hurricane», even well into adulthood. Jess’ shameful desire to be accepted, to actually do good and be recognised for it and treated like family instead of like a reckless and antisocial threat. The past Lorelai doesn’t want to remember as heartbreakingly as it truly was. The future Jess can’t bear to prepare himself for, neither for the bad or the good.
It’s all just too much.

Sees a nice article my friend posted about the voice actor of The Emperor saying:
“everything The Emperor gives is considered. And I know that leans in towards players saying it’s all manipulation, and with all stuff like that it is, to a degree. I think every single character in Baldur’s Gate manipulates. In fact, I think we all manipulate.- . Anyone The Emperor encounters is likely already going to have a lot of weighty preconceptions that The Emperor may have to get through or contend with. Because of this, The Emperor’s very much on edge, they’re treading a very fine line" X
then i scroll down n see deranged comments like “see i always knew he’s an abuser, nice to us when it benefits them, a gaslighter and a narcissist. He’s cazador levels of evil and its all just a matter of time before he mindrapes us like he did to stelmane”
Do you know what the word fun means? And have you ever experienced it??? Its fun to peel back the layers of a character- see the motivation behind their actions and realize there is more to them than what I experienced the last time- Sorry for sucking the emperors big fat cock i guess???

hunger games ballad of songbirds and snakes was SO DELIGHTFULLY FUCKED UP FROM START TO FINISH. absolutely loved it. it was the exactly appropriate amount of horrifying. this is a movie about the villains and how truly fucked up their minds and motivations are and how that directly led to the Panem and hunger games we see by Katniss’s time. the few good people are quashed by the evil ones NOT BECAUSE OF INDIVIDUAL VILLAINY but because the SYSTEM is so horribly corrupt and oppressive and individually they can’t change those systems and it’ll take until the massive collective efforts in the second rebellion for that to happen. Snow is humanized without ever being redeemed; it shows he was not born evil but went from this traumatized little kid to a conniving calculating bastard man willing to cast off said humanity for the sake of his ambitions of power and control. CONTROL - the books hit this home, but a sense of control is what makes him feel powerful, as someone who grew up under the shadow of war watching people starve in the Capitol streets and he himself going hungry for most of his life. and then the movie takes all that into account and shows what he becomes and says “cool motive still murder.” it was so well done I’m losing my mind

I've got Vodial on the brain today, so we're starting with some worldbuilding stuff for it
First thing: because this is a fanfic set in a video game, based off several servers where the characters acknowledge respawn, there is respawn. This is a part of the universe, it's a part of daily life, no biggie
(for most people. sometimes. it can become a biggie. this is a plot point so we won't go too much into it here, but people vary so)
But! This means there's an entire set of things to explore about respawn. We as players see the lil' menu screen that pops up after death, but how does it work for someone living in that world? What does it feel like? Does it feel different between servers/worlds? What makes it feel different? What happens when you're playing on a different difficulty, does that change anything about it?
This got touched on super briefly in Blink of an Eye, which is set in the same world as Voidal, where there's a decent amount of narration about feeling the universe's love while respawning, and gathering code, and stuff like that. We can pretty reasonably establish this as the baseline expected way for respawn to go, because we gotta pick a baseline to identify what qualifies as unusual.
One of the big things with respawn, especially, is most of the time it heals the injury that finished you off--and generally all the ones before that, too--because that's how video games typically work and this is set in the world of a video game.
But sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes things don't heal fully. Sometimes there's a scar. And while unusual, the characters in the story are functionally immortal as long as they want to continue living, so most people have met at least one or two who this has happened to (if it hasn't happened to them).
One of the really big things is that the universe loves you (end poem my beloved) and so working that into respawns is incredibly important from a storytelling perspective, even if the character isn't sure of why yet. And this makes it super extra important when that doesn't happen, because it's a sign something else is wrong. Something else is significantly wrong.
There's a ton of different ways I could keep talking about this, and I can and will go for actual hours, but for the sake of not dumping everything in one post I'm gonna end this one here

This is a complement!!! Your art style looks like the top end of Morrowind fanart (and I think you should do some Elder Scrolls stuff if it interests you), I love it
I actually have done some TES art in the past! But yeah not much with my current styles and unfortunately no Morrowind stuff :') (the oldest elder scroll game I've played is Oblivion, though didn't complete that either. yet.) But Skyrim is one of my comfort games!
Now taking a little break but not too long ago I started a new playthrough with my beloved first Skyrim character, Ruis (later Daro'Ruis).
Tumblr media
And thank you! Though a bunch of elder scrolls fanartists I know have very unique styles but all of them are very funky 🧡

Speaking of their depiction of Will's anxiety- the Stymphalian birds were specifically chosen for him, because in the myths they can only be taken down by archery. But they're saying here that Will had a traumatic experience at the hands of monsters who have historically been defeated by archers. And then he didn't dedicate himself to archery at all? For the 5+ years he's been at camp? Reverse superhero origin story where instead of vowing to fight crime as the result of a loved one's death they just never leave the house ever again
Yeah! Or music/sound (which his satyr is specifically noted to be skilled at - Woodrow teaches the music class at CHB in The Hidden Oracle), which Will also doesn't do anything with besides his sonic whistle or healing hymns (which apparently are actually just his mom's songs and not hymns) at all until that gets retconned in TSATS. Like, we know he has a sonic whistle and healing hymns, but it's kind of a specific thing that he's not as musically or archery inclined as his siblings. So why half-retcon half of that, make these birds that can specifically only be defeated by sound and archery a major part of his backstory, and then... we never get any payoff for it? He faces them again, but it doesn't go any better than it did the first time? There's no building of his character there.
Also, Stymphalian birds are actually sacred to Artemis. Yknow. Apollo's twin.
Tumblr media
I get that TSATS was trying to cameo a lot of monsters we've seen before, but making Stymphalian birds specifically part of Will's backstory feels kind of weird and doesn't make a ton of sense? Because when we see them in SoM it's implied they were specifically sent to CHB, so why would they try to maim the random kid? Especially a son of the sibling of the goddess they're sacred to?
The only explanation I would accept is that the Stymphalian birds that attacked Will in New York were actually the ones from CHB in Sea of Monsters after they flew away, and Will just got really unlucky. But timeline-wise that actually doesn't work, cause SoM and TTC are the same year, and Nico and Will are the same age, so Will should be 10 or 11 in SoM/TTC (depending on if you accept Nico is 13 or 14 in HoO). And TSATS tells us Will arrived to CHB at age eight, which would mean he's been at CHB longer than Percy has and so the birds couldn't be the same ones from SoM. (Yes I'm still mad about the absolutely broken timeline there.) Also if they're dissuaded by noise, there's no way they're going to land in the middle of New York City of all places.
There's just other monsters they could have picked that would have made more sense. Or even mortal animals! We know from previous books that there's a thing about mortal animals sometimes having vendettas against the children of gods associated with their species for curse reasons or etc! Apollo actually has a lot of those! And it can become enough of a problem even to young demigods that it can require them to come to camp early before monsters can begin tracking them (ex.: Annabeth with spiders - monsters seemed to only become a problem after she tried coming back home the first time). Why not have it be Will being attacked consistently by normal mortal crows, because he's a son of Apollo? Or snakes - in the first book Percy even mentions fighting off two snakes when he was a baby because they were sent to kill him. I mean, Will's from Texas! We can absolutely scrounge up some snakes for him to fight. And it would fit more with acknowledging how he's from Texas specifically, just like how much the book tries to emphasize that Nico is from Venice.
It feels like one of many dropped plot points that make me say I wish TSATS had been worked on longer so that these types of things could have been ironed out and maybe turned into something consistent.
