Canadian progressive death metal four-piece Dissentient released their third full-length album on the 10th March 2023. The album, Labyrinth, which features 9 tracks and runs for just over an hour, will take you on a mind-bending journey through time and space – take note, this album needs to be enjoyed through headphones. Dissentience - Empire Anatomy “Local bands” are almost always the most interesting bands to talk about, because they can either be really, really good, or really, really bad, there’s usually no in between. I don’t tend to listen to a lot of these types of bands, although I do find some solid unsigned bands from time to time, and one of those bands is PA outfit Dissentience with their debut album, Empire Anatomy, which was released earlier this year. I found out about these guys through a friend of mine who lives in that neck of the woods, because he commented on a post I made about another death-thrash band in the same vein, so he suggested these guys. I’m always up for checking new music, so I thought I’d give it a listen, especially when I saw that the artwork is really cool. If an album has really cool artwork, it usually sucks me in, and I have to check it out. It’s always a bummer when the album sucks, but it’s a home run when the album is great, so where did this album fall? Well, I really enjoy this record, and it might be one of my favorite albums of the year, especially in terms of thrash. These guys play more of a death-thrash sound, akin to Slayer, Kreator, and bands like that, so if you enjoy the death metally side of thrash, you’ll enjoy this. The vocals are very dynamic, and these guys have a knack for riffs and solos. The solos on this thing in fantastic, and a lot of the riffs are what you’d expect from a record like this, too, so I have to give it to them for having some solid musicianship. The only real downside to this record is that there isn’t much to say if you enjoy this type of death-thrash, because that’s all there is to this 40-minute album, but that’s not a bad thing, as it’s done very well. I like a lot of stuff like this, so I have to credit where it’s due. It’s like the new Undeath record, where they’re a solid death metal band that’s really good at what they do, even if they don’t tread any new ground. It’s a fantastic album, but there’s just not a whole ton you can really dive into about the album itself, but I’m happy I listened to this, it’s very good.

"CLINICAL PSYCHOSIS" IS NOW AVAILABLE!
Tumblr media
BETHLEHEM, PA. - DEATH THRASH METAL BAND DISSENTIENCE NEW SINGLE/VIDEO
"CLINICAL PSYCHOSIS"
IS NOW AVAILABLE!
"Bethelem, PA-based crushers Dissentience is now streaming their new single "Clinical Psychosis." Equal parts groovy thrash metal and furious death metal, Dissentience has a few ways to kick your ass clean into next week." - Metal Injection
Though the forges of Bethlehem Steel have long been extinguished, Dissentience is here to prove that the steel town still has plenty of metal to offer. Since its inception, the four-piece death-thrash act has set out to bring their unique blend of speed, groove, and unfiltered aggression to the masses across the tri-state area and the northeast U.S. The release of the band’s 2018 EP Mask of Pretense brought forth praise both from fans and critics alike, with Decibel Magazine calling it “relentless, technical and melodic.” An explosive showcase of energy and precision, Dissentience’s live performance took them to the Viper Room after winning the East Coast leg of the Wacken Metal Battle USA in 2019. Entering the scene with unmatched intensity and a sound that already screams “unique,” the take-no-prisoners attitude of Dissentience is indisputable and made even more apparent on their upcoming album.

[The Bolsheviks] justify despotism of State power by the circumstance that capitalism is not yet completely eliminated, and promise freedom as soon as socialism has no more enemies. But what does that mean? In reality, it is not only the true supporters of capitalism, but all socialists of any dissentient orientation that the ruling party considers to be its enemies. From this point of view, the complete triumph of socialism — say, in Russia — requires sweeping elimination not only of all bourgeois-minded populations, but of all Mensheviks, Socialist Revolutionaries, anarchists, syndicalists, perhaps some opposition inside the Communist Party itself, and all discontented city and village residents.
Marie Goldsmith, under the pseudonym Maria Korn, predicting the Stalinist purges of 1937 a full twelve years before they would happen in Marxist Utopia. Emphasis mine.

Just a good ol’ fashioned girl-hates-government dystopia.
Oh, and mind control.

A CITY WITHOUT BIRDS
GENRE: Science Fiction
SUBGENRES: Dystopia, cyberpunk, hopepunk
THEMES: Found family, change, memories, hope
AUDIENCE: Anyone
P.O.V./TENSE: First person, past tense
Memories can’t be trusted in Seranid. Feisty Terry Silver learns the hard way when she’s forced to flee the utopian City of her childhood, charged with a crime she has no recollection of committing.
Here’s what other people say
“really action packed…. incredibly well written and kept up the pace for the whole book” — Vee Ramage
“I must admit I was totally taken in by Terry and the Professor and the supporting characters.”
“What I like most is that it really takes points from our own flaws in society. The use of the separation between the rich and the poor to cover bigger schemes.”
Interested?
You can find A City Without Birds on Goodreads, and it’s on sale on Amazon.
Or keep reading…

Welcome to Seranid.  You’re happy here. Everybody is.
From the ruins of the Pacific Coast rises Seranid, where
“THE CAMERAS AREN’T WATCHING YOU. YOU’RE WATCHING YOURSELF.”
Terry Silver doesn’t know she’s living a lie. She thinks nothing of the status symbol implanted into every Seranidian at birth. She’s unaware of the dissentious thoughts erased from her mind, or the half-truths fed to millions of Seranidians to maintain the paradisial City. Even, of the fact that she may have taken a life. But when the mysterious Professor Camus Remin whisks her from the crosshairs of Seranid’s task force into the Slums, she finds stolen memories — including ones of her long-dead father, and a people trampled by innovation — who call her the Phoenix that will herald the rebirth of the nation. As Terry tries to foment an uprising, she faces more than her own mortality: resurfacing trauma, the deaths of loved ones, and the looming threat of all-out nuclear war. She’s forced to ask herself: what price would you pay for change?
Tumblr media
Seranid’s Government rules through division. Knowledge workers: doctors, engineers, teachers, and scientists are kept in the City, a bubble of utopia, while the rest are cast into the Slums, where poverty, disease, and corruption run rampant. Status symbols implanted at birth label Seranidians and feed them propaganda, altering their thoughts and memories to keep them in line. The task force eliminates any remaining rebels.
The Council, the coalition of the six business heads of Seranid, is the guiding force and source of comfort in many Seranidian’s lives. From controlling the weather in the City to providing aid to those in need, they are the sympathetic heart of Seranid. And the driver behind the City’s endless consumerism.

CHARACTERS
Terry Silver: Fatherless and friendless, Terry finds solace in her work: keyboards, droids, and the soldering iron that burned a hole through her cargo pants. Her defiance gets her in trouble when Seranid’s government targets her for something she can’t even remember.
Terry’s first memory | Sketches | Terry’s mirror
Camus Remin: He has a charming smile and a burning passion for physics, but remains a mystery to his students, burdened by past mistakes. He quickly becomes the father Terry never had — but only later does she learn why he saved her.
Quote | Sketch
Marco Luiz: An old friend of Camus and a resident of the Slums, Marco knows the injustices of Seranid’s system firsthand. Both idealist and kind-hearted, he’s quick to sacrifice himself to help those in need — or just cook them some good roast lamb.
OC’s a ten but…
Janette Thornell: Hardened by past failures, the Resistance leader often clashes with Terry. Yet Janette loves those she protects — most of all, Emmy, who knows the secret of her origins.
Janette’s Secret
Emmy Wood: A City surgeon who defected to the Resistance, Emmy is more a scientist than a fighter. But when fate separates her, Camus, Marco and Terry from the rest of the Resistance, the four must learn to fight – and survive – together.
OC’s a ten but…

SETTING
North America, in the distant future…
Three countries share North America: materialistic Seranid on the West Coast, militaristic Leifen in the East, and modest Mirena, caught between the two superpowers. Each has their own way of surviving in this cruel new world, and each has their own flaws.
More Descriptions | Sketches | Leifen | Mirena | Ideals
psst. hey you.
Thank you for making it this far! I got a little secret… I’m planning on making A City Without Birds free for a few days later this year (date undecided). Please reblog/comment if you’d like to be tagged when that happens!

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson made a "mathematically absurd claim" about Black newborns in her dissenting opinion in the affirmative action decision, attorney Ted Frank wrote in a Wednesday Wall Street Journal op-ed.
Jackson argued in her dissent that diversity "saves lives" and that it was essential for "marginalized communities."
"It saves lives. For marginalized communities in North Carolina, it is critically important that UNC and other area institutions produce highly educated professionals of color. Research shows that Black physicians are more likely to accurately assess Black patients’ pain tolerance and treat them accordingly (including, for example, prescribing them appropriate amounts of pain medication). For high-risk Black newborns, having a Black physician more than doubles the likelihood that the baby will live, and not die," she wrote.
Frank responded to the argument in his Journal opinion piece: "A moment’s thought should be enough to realize that this claim is wildly implausible. Imagine if 40% of black newborns died—thousands of dead infants every week. But even so, that’s a 60% survival rate, which is mathematically impossible to double. And the actual survival rate is over 99%."
Frank, a senior attorney at Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute, filed an amicus brief in support of the petitioners in SFFA v. Harvard, according to the WSJ.
"How could Justice Jackson make such an innumerate mistake?" he wrote.
Frank wrote that Jackson's claim came from a 2020 study, according to a footnote in the dissent, but added that the study didn't match Jackson's claim.
"The study makes no such claims. It examines mortality rates in Florida newborns between 1992 and 2015 and shows a 0.13% to 0.2% improvement in survival rates for black newborns with black pediatricians (though no statistically significant improvement for black obstetricians)," he said.
The Supreme Court rejected the use of race as a factor in college admissions at the end of June, citing a violation of the 14th amendment.
In a 6-3 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion that, "A benefit to a student who overcame racial discrimination, for example, must be tied to that student’s courage and determination."
Frank said the study cited in Jackson's dissent was "flawed."
"So we have a Supreme Court justice parroting a mathematically absurd claim coming from an interested party’s mischaracterization of a flawed study. Her opinion then urges ‘all of us’ to 'do what evidence and experts tell us is required to level the playing field and march forward together.' Instead we should watch where we’re going," Frank continued.
