I have vague memories of watching it as a kid, but I don't remember much now, apart from the dub's weirdly catchy theme song.

I remember picking up a Digimon magazine, seeing a picture of all the 'baby' Digimon, and speculating about what their final forms would be. Like, what's this guy's Charizard equivalent?

My current understanding, though, is that Digimon don't really have final forms? It's not like Pokémon, where your evolution is capped after two stages - Digimon can just keep evolving, and have all sorts of branched transformations and combinations.

The entire premise is that they're digital monsters, but I don't actually know what makes them digital. They seem to have bodies - but for all I know, the entire series takes place in virtual reality, so these 'bodies' might just be 3D models.

Were Digimon created deliberately by human programmers? Are they emergent lifeforms that developed spontaneously on the internet? Are they physical beings from another universe, using computers to project themselves into our reality? There are a lot of interesting directions you could take this.

What do you think of the one piece movies?

Oh boi, that's a loaded question. 😭 I will reply honestly but please remember this is my personal opinion, whatever you like it's all legit!

In general, I don't particularly care for the OP movies too much. I did see them, almost all, even enjoy some or part of them, but I'm grateful that they're non-canon. I don't hate them and I'm always happy when a new one is announced (more OP content!), but that's about it. Same goes for the special/OVAs, although they kinda stopped with those. I will only go through the movies in this post.

Movie 1 (One Piece: the Movie) and 2 (Clockwork Island Adventure) are basically like filler arcs in the early days of the anime. They are not bad, nor good. I haven't seen them in a long while but I remember being pretty neutral towards them.

Movie 3 (Chopper's Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animals) and 5 (The Cursed Holy Sword) actually SUCK. They suck so much I could hardly get to the end. The Chopper one is just a total bore with a super predictable plot, while the Zoro one is actually painful. Zoro and the crew are totally OOC, and the poorly-thought magic lore introduced in the movie just doesn't fit with the OP universe.

You'll noticed I skipped movie 4 (Dead End Adventure). And that's because this one I like. It's also like a filler arc, but it fits perfectly in the plot (love the quick reference to Navarone), it flows well, it's dynamic and engaging, and the original characters are actually good. Shout out to Shuraiya Bascùd, whose design is basically Ace in a different color palette, but has a complex personality.

Movie 6 (Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island) is a unique One Piece product, quite distant from what we're used to, and therefore I consider it a must-see. Not really for the plot, which doesn't make much sense, but for the art and the direction. In fact, it was directed by Hosoda, a very notable anime movie director (Wolf Children, The Girl who Leapt through Time, Summer Wars, Digimon...).

Movie 7 (The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle)... I remember absolutely nothing of this movie except Nami's bouncing boobs.

Movie 8 (Episode of Alabasta) and 9 (Episode of Chopper plus) are revised re-tellings of the Alabasta and Drum saga. They aren't bad, especially Chopper's, some dramatic sequences are very touching. They made a great use of the soundtrack, or lacking thereof.

I will place Movie 11 (One Piece 3D: Straw Hat Chase) here because it doesn't fit with the remaining ones. This may as well be a special: it's only 30 minutes long, most of the Strawhats barely appear, it doesn't feature a villain-based adventure, and it's in a graphic format never used again. Take it as a slice-of-life episode, and it's enjoyable.

Movie 10 (Strong World) is a turning point, because this is when OP movies became "films", Oda started to get involved, some original canon elements were dropped in, and there were theatrical releases. The difference in quality (at least plot-wise) is immediately clear. Strong World is the last movie set before the timeskip (excluding movie 11), and it may well be my favorite.

Movie 12 (Z) is probably close second. The villain is a great character, and I LOVED the inclusion of Aokiji and Kizaru, how different they were, the implications they brought to the plot.

Movie 13 (Gold) is okay. Enjoyable. Once again, good villain, nice setting, good animation.

Movie 14 (Stampede) has a special place in my heart because it included the Kid Pirates, and Kid & Killer have a few scenes. Buuuut if I have to be honest, the plot is quite weak and, if you take off the (scarce) screen time of my beloved, it's a little boring.

And finally! The most recent, movie 15, Red. I haven't had the chance to watch it yet because it didn't get a theatrical release where I live, so I'm waiting for the DVD to be out. What I can say is that I've watched reviews from my two favorite OP youtubers (Tekking101 and Sawyer7mage), and they were not particularly impressed with it. My best friend also watched it and found it incredibly boring, so my hopes aren't really too high. I think they went waaaay too hard on the marketing for this one, they pushed Shanks and Uta SO MUCH. (Also it doesn't help that I'm one of the very few people that don't really care about Shanks, huh). I heard the songs and they were amazing, Ado is a masterclass singer. I read about the plot and I do think some details are quite interesting, like Uta's whole psychology and possibly the ending (?). I guess I'll have to update my opinion when I actually watch the movie.

Title: Ghost Cycle

Genre(s): Adventure, Romance

Summary: Mummymon and Arukenimon are reborn in the Ghost Game Universe, with no memories of their previous lives as Oikawa’s underlings. Following different paths of life Mummymon becomes a doctor and Arukenimon an explorer (no she’s not the unhinged one we see in episode 21), both having no idea the other exists- until the pair find themselves in the Human World at the same time. Suffering from simultaneous visions and an overpowering sense of déjà-vu, they decide to work together to find out more about their previous lives- and why they had to come to an end.

Title: Digimon Adventure 03

Genre(s): Adventure, Friendship, Mystery

Summary: A few months have passed since the events of New Year’s Eve 2002. The second set of Chosen Children finally returns to the Digital World- only to find a new threat looming over them! Thankfully they’re not alone, as a trio of Digimon make their appearance to help them along the way. But who really are Dokugumon, Bakemon and Ajatarmon- and why do they feel so familiar? (Pretty much a “Season 2” to Adventure 02 where the Chosen deal with a new threat, with a subplot revolving around Mummymon & Arukenimon learning about who they used to be and how they came to be)

Title: Savestate Refresh

Genre(s): Friendship

Summary: After being killed by BelialVamdemon, Mummymon and Arukenimon are brought back to life by the Digital World- at the cost of their data and biological makeup being altered to allow their rebirth. Mummymon’s human DNA is completely purged from his body to make him a regular Digimon, whereas Arukenimon loses all her data and is left as a normal human.

Summary: Arukenimon and Mummymon have returned among the living, but Vamdemon and Yukio Oikawa’s treason have left them with scars ; too many to count. Arukenimon seems the most affected- making the snap decision to do ‘better’ than those who used her. She is going to destroy the Digital World, whatever it takes. Even if she has to die with it. And even if the Arukenimon he fell in love with is long gone, how could Mummymon ever give up on her?

Summary: She had never thought much of it at first. It was just a few glances, a few prolonged looks she caught here and there. An eye that stared just a little too long at her makeup set ; hands that held her dress just a little too firmly when they did laundry... But then came the question.. "Arukenimon… Have you ever felt like you were meant to be someone else…?"

Title: Bond of Blood

Genre(s): Horny

Summary: Following a sudden and brutal accident, Arukenimon’s data is heavily damaged and begins to deteriorate rapidly. In order to stop this process and help her recover, Jyou Kido determines that she needs to intake new data to repair her system. Unfortunately, pure data seems to conflict with her own and regular human DNA simply won’t do the trick. The only solution is for her to intake a mixture of both- and there is only one other person who can provide her with it. (a.k.a a Vampire AU with no actual vampires)

AI: The Somnium Files

This murder mystery VN full of dirty jokes, puns and references to other media as well as mentions of urban legends has changed my life for worse. Play it!

Digimon World Next Order

This is a vpet/RPG hybrid where you have to look after two Digimon partners while also exploring the Digital World and recruiting Digimon to rebuild a city. It's on the grindier side but once you get the hang of everything it gets rather addicting. The PC version features a run button and a beginner mode, something the PSVita and PS4 versions didn't have.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition. This is a collection of PS2 esque traditional turnbased RPGs. Like Next Order, these are on the grindy side but the grinding is extremely satisfying and building the optimal Digimon team is a lot of fun. Also great to play while doing something like listening to podcasts.

.hack//G.U. Last Recode

A remastered HD collection of PS2 RPGs featuring a brand new and original fourth episode unique to this collection. These games are are actually set in an MMORPG and you play as the protag's player avatar, Haseo. Track down the mysterious Tri-Edge and unravel the mysteries of The World.

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series

A collection of two classic scrimblo 2D platformers remakes, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa: Lunatea's Veil. Cute visuals, simple yet engaging gameplay, catchy music and stories which may or may not make you cry.

A really cool and fun action RPG with visuals that aged REALLY well. An all around classic with a fun protagonist.

BlazBlue Centralfiction

A really fun 2D anime fighter with lots and lots of characters and tons of mechanics, now also with rollback!

Super Kiwi 64

(I know this game is rather cheap when not on sale to begin with but I'm plugging it anyway shhh)

This is a cute and fun bite sized 3D platformer that harkens back to 90s platformers, particularly the Nintendo 64 ones. The movement is really tight and fun and the game takes around an hour or so to 100%. Highly recommended for quick breaks between huge games!

Snake Pass

An unconventional 3D platformer in which you don't jump and maneuver through the air with complicated movements but instead slide, crawl and climb as a snake. With beautiful visuals, cute and colorful characters, unconventional but fun gameplay as well as music by David Wise, you can't go wrong with this one!

i havent played that many digimon games, but i definitely feel like they should be more popular. one of the things i really like about digimon is that they’re constantly changing the universe which means there’s at least an attempt to keep things new and exciting. And that goes for the games too! most of the stories in the games are pretty unrelated, so it means a completely new experience than any of the games you’ve played before, or any of the shows you’ve watched, though sometimes mcs from the shows show up in the games depending how related they are.

that’s why I really want the appmon game to come out in the US. Normally, there’s a couple mechanics that stay the same--there’s always side quests, always a digimon farm, always complex evolution patterns--but with appmon you already know the evolution’s going to be completely different because you’re fighting with different monsters, and since you’re fighting with different monsters, it means that NONE of the appmons are anything from the previous games. that’s so exciting! Nothing about the game will be like rewatching the show. It’ll be like a totally new show, just set in a world you already know, and I’m genuinely looking forward to that

This project clocks in at almost 400,000 screencaps / over 230GB. So you might want to take that into consideration if you’re looking to obtain, uh, all of it at some point.

Each season post contains all of its episodes and, if available, some number of the following: creditless openings/endings, eyecatches, evolution sequences, title cards, and all Digimon Analyzer type images. There’ll also be some bonus images - the various Digivices, for example, or things like Digimentals and Spirits. 

Movie posts have, well, movie stuff. And some bonus images.

I keep all of my screencaps around for personal use, so feel free to ask for new uploads at any time if links stop working, if other sites work better for you, if you need bigger files broken up, etc. I want anyone and everyone to be able to enjoy these, so if there's something I can do to make it easier for you to obtain them, please let me know! I’ll do my best to try and accomodate as much as possible.

If any other new seasons/movies/whatever end up appearing down the line, this post will be updated to include them as well. Same goes for if/when blu-ray rips become a thing for the remaining stuff. Digimon’s been my big love for 20 years now, and I’ll keep loving it as long as I can.

World building notes:

Logania World-Building

Fanfiction world, also applicable to Gregania, the parallel world with all “the serial numbers filed off”.

* Geography

* Primary imports & exports: none, it’s economically isolated; the city must provide all of its citizens’ needs

* Natural Resources: none, really. They rely solely on thaumatological magic for their resources.

* Without Lord Logan’s imaginenergy, a cosmic force he wields, the city’s placement on a rocky wasteland with dense soil would inevitably force them to move. This is a problem because most of the fauna of the Loganic Isle is incredibly hostile.

* Religion

* Non-denominational Christianity has a religious monopoly on the people, by their own volition. People believe what they want, but the unifying belief is that Jesus was the Son of God and that he died for our sins.

* Logan constantly professes he is ***not*** a god.

* Very rarely do the different denominations clash with each other.

* Achievements

* Most works of art and literature have been migrated from Earth. A majority of people lack the drive to create “Loganic” art or literature.

* Most achievements are either technological or supernatural: e.g. the Comm Watch, a smart watch that can create 3D holograms, or warp rings, bronze rings that can pierce the veil between realities.

* Politics

* It used to be an Absolute Monarchy, then, from Earth Year 2013 to 2015, it had Lord Logan’s advisors elected by direct democracy, now it resembles the UK’s system of government.

* Lord Logan’s still the monarch and can still release executive orders.

* Laws are created by the system of checks & balances identical to that of the USA government.

* Laws are enforced by a police body.

* Economics

* The most valuable resources are foodstuffs, as they’re incredibly hard to come by with the dense soil.

* Silver-standard barter system (Fixed price based on price of silver; however people frequently trade goods for goods).

* Society’s wealth is comparable to most first-world countries.

* Social Structure

* The most important people are the people who have had larger-than-life heroic achievements. Protagonists from shows like Pokémon, W.I.T.C.H., Digimon, or the Original Teen Titans cartoon are in this category. Those who have made “ultimate sacrifices” are honored to the highest degree.

* The least important people are those who deal in “dishonorable acts” (e.g. exotic dancers and “dirty” comedians). These people are viewed with the lowest degree of honor. Protagonists from shows like South Park, Drawn Together, Family Guy, Robot Chicken, Futurama, and the Simpsons are in this category.

* Theses classes of people clash frequently.

* Exception: Stan Marsh of South Park and Coco Bandicoot from Crash Bandicoot have formed a rocky-at-best/nonexistent-at-worst friendship founded on the basis of a dislike of the Pokémon franchise.

* Terra from the Original Teen Titans cartoon is a cover-artist Pop Star. Her album with a cover of Britney Spears's "Oops, I did it again" went multi-platinum in 1 month.

* John Arbuckle of the Garfield comic strips is a freelance guitarist, akin to Slash. He has worked with Deformed (Pokémon Punk-Pop band), Hydra (Electro-rock band from the Hero Factory universe), and The Guardians (Karata from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Misty from Pokémon, Fiona from Zoids, and Sakura Haruno).

* Everyone has their "native technology" and prefers using stuff from that.

* People who have children via an "epilogue" (E.G., Digimon Adventure & Harry Potter) have had their "adult" forms severed from them to take care of their kids.

* People don’t die, even if they've died in their source material. They believe Jesus will give the people true eternal life rather than reviving after 30 minutes of being “dead”.

* Matoro from Bionicle and Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars essentially live off the state’s dime.

* People don't age.

* The analogous G.I. Bill used to be the only option for post-secondary education, before Logan realized he was becoming too war-like.

* Occult Magic is different than Thaumatological Magic.

* No other sapient life other than the Loganic Colonists.

* Those who have had their memories erased or altered have had their memories restored (EG, Terra, the Matoran of Metru/Mata Nui, Ash Ketchum).

* Those who share an actor or voice actor feel a special kinship with each other.

* Characters from Butch Hartman Cartoons, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Outlander have rebelled against their creators for various reasons.

I’ve finally gotten around to the Ace Attorney anime

And boy am I disappointed so far!

Not sure I need spoiler breaks for an anime that’s already been out for a few years and a game that’s been out for over a decade in the states and more than fifteen years in Japan, but I’ll still pretend no one knows about the sled, so to speak.

FIRST POINT: Animation

Seriously, the animation is shit.  I’m having flashbacks to Sailor Moon Crystal.  I didn’t take a million screen caps of it like I did for Crystal, but type the following into Google and take a look: ace attorney anime bad animation.  When Phoenix bows to Grossberg, his hands did the same thing Jadite’s did, and in the very beginning when he’s apologizing to Mia for being late, again, the hands.  His hair spikes are constantly changing size, the 3D is egregiously terrible when they pan the courtroom in the first episode (not so bad when they don’t pan the model), and the gallery in the second trial (ep. 2-5) could have been made with better models back in the original game’s launch year...of the Japanese version!!!  The use of effects only in the trial of ep. 1 just highlights further what a dumb idea it was (albeit one sort of taken from the live action movie), while the whole magic screens coming from the paneling thing seems just plain dumb given at this point the setting of the games has turned around and become “present day” instead of “fifteen years into the future.” Inconsistencies with things like Mia’s boobs and Phoenix’s hair spikes aside, the actual models they came up with...are pretty terrible, actually.  Phoenix’s forehead is just plain wrong, Gumshoe’s head is all...something...Mia looks like she has an animation error instead of a mole, the whole makeup thing when Maya channeling is idiotic and kind of sexist when taken in context with the credits animation, Mia wears slight heels and is only 8 cm/3 in. shorter than Phoenix in the first place yet she’s way shorter standing next to him in court -- for that matter, Maya is 22 cm/8 in. shorter than Phoenix, yet she only seems to come to his collar.  This tends to be true in all the official art that she’s absolutely diminutive, but it’s always irritated me there as well, so I’ll just grouse about that one on the entire franchise.

On pan outs, the judge is literally a tan ball with a beard.  Contemplate that quality kwality for a second.

SECOND POINT: Sound

The use of music from the games is a lot more understated than I was expecting, which is a crying shame because the franchise’s music is beloved by fans, and has been acclaimed repeatedly for years.  When I did hear the motifs from the games, I started to feel a shred of hope for the anime.  The opening is just fluffy nonsense, generic OP stuff that will be forgotten immediately and probably skipped if VRV will stop being a pain in the ass every time I jump around. I like that VRV gives me the option of dubbed or subbed.  I also appreciate that if I go to Crunchyroll itself instead of its VRV channel, I can choose the English or Japanese names on the sub track.  I wish that option was on VRV as well, just because I find it interesting, but meh. I don’t hate the credits song, but I’m not...happy with aspects of the animation on it.  But that’s for character reasons, not technical ones.

THIRD POINT: Voicing

I’ve watched both the dub and the sub, and I have to say, I like the fan VAs better from the years of fan-dubbing of the games.  Slightly British Edgeworth and scratchy Phoenix Wright are better than either official VA.  That said, I like Japanese Wright and Maya better than English, and I was so disappointed when I heard Edgeworth’s lack of posh accent that I went immediately back to subtitles, which is a shame because this is the kind of franchise where I might have actually gone with the dub.  And yet, that shrieky “WHAT” to open Ep. 4 in English...yeah, that lost me.  Sorry, US English Maya.

FOURTH POINT: Subtitles

Just gonna say, just because they kept the English names for one of the subtitle tracks doesn’t mean they had to keep all of the localization aspects.  Hearing Maya say “miso ramen, RA~MEN!” and seeing “burgers” gets weird.  To be fair, this was similar to the dissonance I had to wrap my head around when Digimon Adventure Tri came out.

SIXTH POINT: Compression

Actually, no complaints.  I think they’ve done well with what to cut and what to keep, and using the time they have to make the characters feel as over the top as they were in the games, so far.  Little sad the cute moment where Phoenix carries Maya to the couch was lost, though.

FINAL POINT: Characterization

This section is mostly gonna be about Maya, but I’ll knock a couple other things out of the way, first.  One is that Mia sounds a lot more...motherly, than I was expecting.  Another is that it seems weird Maya heard Mia in Ep. 4 when that’s...not a thing.  At all.  The judge seems less like a doof so far, and Edgeworth’s pompous ass has yet to seem quite as pompous as it should.  Gumshoe seems even less competent than usual, though, given his weird posing when entering the scene.

Maya got to point things out during the case and show signs of intelligence, which is nice, because half the fandom has her as Phoenix’s cool sis or something akin and recognizes her common sense wisdom and the other half has Crya the burger monster.  In the games, Maya gets Phoenix to actually pay her share way less than in fanon.  Her sprites present someone who’s a lot more solid and steady than the promo art does, which I’ve never been able to wrap my head around.  I’d finish a game, unlock that final CG, and be like “wait, what?”

So then this anime comes out, and I hear her voiced, and I go, “Wait, so she is the high-pitched adorable mascot?” I’ve never understood the universal need for them in every single anime and take great joy in subversions like Kyubey and the “Fairy” guy in Mahou Shoujo Ore.  It’s not that I don’t like them when done well, it’s just, if the series isn’t fantasy, they seem to squish a female into the role.  “Mayushii-de~su.”  Like that.  So hearing Maya done like that...ew.  Just, ew.  It also makes her seem much, MUCH younger than 17.  I moved out on my own when I was 18 and hadn’t come to terms with my gender, but I wasn’t sitting there with makeup to try to be more “adult,” either.  I think most girls go through that, sure, but it’s more of a middle school thing.  Even I did, and if 13 year old me (who wore makeup every day) was told “I have a magic ray that will make you a boy” I would have thrown my compact away and asked “Can you make it look like an accident?  My parents are Fundamentalists.”  And maybe I’m wrong for bringing my experiences into this, but then again, I’m not trying to give a professional critique, but my personal review, and in the end, that boils down to what I like and don’t like, which, meh, what can I say, I’m an innately selfish creature and myself doesn’t like seeing girls pressured to use makeup to be “grownups.” Sailor Moon always did that, too, and that’s one of my all-time favorites but LORD I hate that aspect, and hate that it’s persisted across adaptations for decades.  I hate that Maya’s new look in SoJ has lip gloss, too.  Like, “Hey, we back-stepped on all the growth at the end of AA3, so how can we show she’s matured?”  “I know!  Lip gloss!”  “Perfect, give that guy a raise!”

CONCLUSION: I’m gonna go over to AO3 and read “Archeology” again because it’s the Ace Attorney characterization we all really deserved and probably still come back and watch the entire series, but I’m gonna pray really hard it improves as it goes.  Maybe it got some actual money for the sequel seasions.
