Round 2 A Match 2
Propaganda under the cut
Telephone Wire
This made me cry when I saw it in the theatre.
On a drive that will turn out to be their last night together, Alison (gay) struggles to connect with her father (also gay). She internally tells herself to say something that she isn’t able to actually say, he remembers a boy from his first year of college (and we’ve just seen Alison fall in love with a girl in college).
It’s a heartbreaking, moving moment that also perfectly captures what was going on in the very different graphic memoir the musical is adapted from
Die Schatten Werden Länger
It's a duet between Kronprinz Rudolf (the only son of Empress Sissi) and his suicidal thoughts personified in the form of the grim reaper, who has been following Rudolf sincw his childhood and urges him to join him.
The writing is beautiful, Uwe Kröger plays Death/the grim reaper like an otherworldly entity
The choreography and staging works really well to show Rudolf desperation and helplessness and symbolizes how he feels trapped and only sees one way out.
It's like a creepy subversion of the classic love duet in the way how, as the song progresses, Rudolf gets less and less resistant towards Death's advances.
The choreo also very erotic at times which makes sense because in the show Death is portrayed as a lover to those he wants to take and he kills his victims with a kiss
sopping wet pathetic gay prince got seduced by sexy eldritch entity representimg his suicidal tendecies and mental illnesses

Musical Theatre Song Contest: Round One B
Submitter’s propaganda under the cut
Die Schatten werden länger
This song is haunting in how simple it is with minimal instrumentals, symbolising the sorrow and loneliness of Sisi. You can hear the shadows grawling after sunset as Death's voice gently seduces the listener. This song is like witnessing the last star slowly die as it's shimmer fades. And the lyrics in this piece are gorgeous! For example: "It was evening before your day began / the shadows grow longer / the world dies with you, don't hold on to it"
(With some spoilers): It’s a very enjoyable song melody wise, it captures the ominous feeling of Death (Der Tod) approaching very well. It appears in both acts 1 & 2, which draws a neat comparison on how Elisabeth (of Austria) has struggled mentally and how through her actions, has pushed her son Rudolf (Crown Prince) into a similar situation of her earlier years. It effectively illustrates the tragedy of the mother and son, and also the foreground and seductive Der Tod gets a little kissy with Rudolf which is always a bonus haha (Pollrunner note: this submitter added a link for both versions of the song; the part with Rudolf is in the act 2 version of the song)
El Tango de Roxanne
It's so freaking good and way better then the original Roxanne also aaron tveit
Aaron Tveit.
Bcuz aaron tveit's voice is magical

Got a new mic so this is more of a test than anything else, so feel free to ignore for your safety if you’d like. But anyway here’s “Die Schatten werden länger” in English.
Your Shadow’s Growing Longer
Death
Remember when we held each other
At our dance, our night together?
You loved me, yes, you loved me
Love me more than day loves darkness
Than that man you call your husband
Though you try to save him from me
You’ll lose him in your night
Your shadow’s growing longer
It was midnight when your day began
Your shadow’s growing longer
First your death and then
Your world will end
In night…

Die Schatten werden länger (ungarisch/hungarian)
so i just watched this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5C7XaZtmU0g and like
what the fukk
you should 100% go watch it yourself but i’m gonna narrate my favorite bits lol
starting off with a relatively normal serious face from the conductor. get fucking ready.
not really anything to see here (except the old man falling asleep in the back)
we got these two doing their gay shit (seriously look at rudolf’s pose)
and then:
rudolf gets fucking lifted
ope let me just
szilveszter’s expressions kill me in these
also not sure why they thought green lasers were the way to go here but sure
he also jumps off a bed?? like??? sir??????
conductor having his moment
(that man is definitely asleep)
reads like a meme format tbh
anyway yeah that’s it. i just. what.

Literally 0% surprised, almost 400 times seems low to me tbh. 😅 But it’s funnier if you consider that the Japanese version is my 4th most listened to song and the Essen cast recording version is in my top songs as well. Also Wenn ich dein Spiegel wär is like number 8 or sth.
Yea my mental health in 2023 was definitely not a dumpster fire why would you think that?

My translation of "Die Schatten werden länger" from the musical Elisabeth
Time we finally speak together
Time we both confess our tether
You know me. Yeah, you know me
Remember when, you were just a child
My promise made as I smiled
I’d not miss a day with you
Oh, You I have always followed
My one friend whom I may call on
When by my fears I am hollowed
I came, since you’re in need!
The shadows here grow longer
Yet everyone lingers blind and still
We sing the piper’s song or
Our strings just jerk of their own free will
The shadows here grow longer!
It is five to twelve!
Our time is almost nil
Time we see the world is rotten
To stop this course so misbegotten
But I'm forced to wait, forgotten
With my hands still in shackles
Nothing's worse than to acknowledge
how disaster makes its progress
while you’re stuck but must bear witness
It makes me sick to death!
The shadows here grow longer
While the tunes we hear grow cold and shrill
The chance of doom grows stronger
And all want to die on their own hill
The shadows here grow longer!
It is five to twelve!
Why wait for blood to spill?
What holds you back now?
It’s time for self-defense
Seize what is yours
You have to strike back!
Strike back?
The shadows here grow longer
What must be done can't be done too late
The chance of doom grows stronger
Stop this disaster they’ll create
The shadows here grow longer!
Kaiser Rudolf will dare to meet his fate

I love Die Schatten Werden Länger (1. Akt) and I must say that the 2004 version isn’t that bad.

The 2019 light installation “La Science des Ombres” by Yves Charnay and Ralf Warnecke on the outside of the library of Magdeburg University demonstrates that if you take a coloured and a white light source illumination an object, they cast coloured shadows, a fact Otto von Guericke found out in an experiment in 1612. There are two similar installations in the same vein by Charnay in Magdeburg (one in Jakobsstraße and one in the parliament).

Round 1 A Match 4
Propaganda under the cut
Judas
god is satan is jesus, and judas is just some guy who was thrown into the thick of it all.
the way god/satan/jesus insists that she "needs it" (the betrayal) makes me think. the strange tenderness of it all. the malloy typical forlorn-ness.
the fourth wall breaking when judas asks "who made this puppet" in reference to satan who is represented by a handpuppet on the actress who plays god/jesus.
IDK it's absurd it's existential it's almost sweet idk man i love this show

Elisabeth fans!!
Under the cut you will find my singable English-lang fan translation of Die Schatten werden Länger (reprise) 😎
I'm somewhat unsatisfied with the simplicity of some of these lyrics in comparison to the complex intertextual prose of the original, but 1) it's nicely singable 2) it avoids weirdly placed syllable stress, which is something that always grinds my gears lmao. (Also, credit where credit is due: some of my choices were inspired by the official French translation used in Elisabeth Bruxellons 2022.)
Please credit as Fitzrove's translation if you use this for anything 😌❤️
The Nights Grow Ever Longer (reprise)
[DEATH:]
Time for us to talk some things through
Time to speak the way we used to
You know me
Yes, you know me
Now you're past being young and frightened
Yet our bond has only tightened
For I will never leave you
[RUDOLF:]
Oh, my friend, the night is darker
Than back then, and I am desperate
When my pain grows even sharper
[DEATH:]
I'm there whenever you call
[BOTH:]
The nights grow ever longer
And the songs we sing are shrill and cold
The madness taking over
While some cling to idols long grown old
The nights grow ever longer
It is five to twelve, the end will soon unfold
[RUDOLF:]
Time to watch as light is fading
Watch the people suffocating
It's so cruel and so frustrating
I'm helpless, they have bound me
[DEATH:]
Nothing's worse than staying silent
When you know the world is twisted
Evil grows and thrives on blindness
[RUDOLF:]
It hurts me to my core
[BOTH:]
The nights grow ever longer
And the foolish few still lead us on
Injustice shall grow stronger
They won't stop it till the chance is gone
The nights grow ever longer
It is five to twelve, we need to turn the tide
[DEATH:]
When will you fight back
This is the time to act
Do what you must
Reach for the power
[RUDOLF:]
Power?
[BOTH:]
The nights grow ever longer
What will be must come to pass right now
Dark shadows seek to conquer
A new world must reach its dawn somehow
The nights grow ever longer
Kaiser Rudolf will rise up and bring us light

Learned Rudolf's part and now I can't remember the main melody. 🫠 Only me, I guess. Anyhoo, I'm shocked by how okay this turned out; I thought this would be a harder song to sing. It only took me long because I decided to learn Rudolf's harmony like an idiot.
The Shadow's Growing Longer (Die Schatten werden länger)
Death
Now it’s time to break the silence
Time to offer you some guidance
You’ve known me, yes, you’ve known me
Cold, alone, still, you have known me
Even as a boy you’ve shown me
What you could be if you’d at last decide
Rudolf
Death, you’ve come when I most need you
Dearest friend, I knew you’d be true
In this world of madness, greed, you—
Death
Am here
To be your guide
Both
The shadow’s growing longer
But mankind is blind to his own folly
The darkness growing stronger
In his hate, his greed, his melancholy
The shadow’s growing longer
Either change the tide
Or watch the whole world die
Rudolf
Captain of a ship soon sinking
Wracked by gales, so close to brinking
And I’m trapped, so helpless, thinking
I’m bounded
Tied and grounded
Death
Still, you can prevent disaster
If you’re brave enough to try it
Though the tide moves ever faster
Rudolf
It makes me long to die!
All
The shadow’s growing longer
But mankind is blind to its own folly
The darkness growing stronger
In his hate, his greed, his melancholy
The shadow’s growing longer
Revolution’s nigh
So why do you/I linger still?
Death
What are you waiting for?
Do what you have to do
Do what you must
To reach for power!
Rudolf
Power?
All
The shadow’s growing longer
What must happen has to or it’s too late
The darkness growing stronger
But the world is blind and deaf with hate
The shadow’s growing longer
Emperor Rudolf will soon make war with this fate

yknow, for the longest time i thought the mayerling dress was the same as Elisabeths mourning gown in the scene after and it was like weird freudian foreshadowing or something, i think it took me watching the mayerling walzer like 5 times until i realized. mourning gowns dont usually show that much cleavage
