As an unapologetic Jesse Pinkman apologist I can’t begin to tell you how utterly uninterested I am in fan work that excuses his actions by characterizing his parents as explicitly abusive or neglectful, especially because so much of his character arc centers around not only taking responsibility for his actions but developing a sense of agency. If anything, I’m interested in Jesse’s relationship with his parents as yet another subtle dig at the myth of the “American Dream” by Breaking Bad’s creators. Jesse’s parents are a “nice”, normal, suburban white couple, the pillars of the foundation for American propaganda. They clearly care about him, but based on their treatment of both their sons, it’s relatively obvious that they care more about keeping up appearances than they do the welfare of their children, who effectively act as status symbols. This is why they write Jesse off quicker than some viewers would have liked (although it should be noted we don’t know the whole story there), and why Jake is so weighed down with extracurriculars when we meet him. They provided Jesse with all the physical necessities afforded to children who grow up well-rounded, well-behaved and on good terms with their parents, but in their conditional love they left him without a support system, and with dangerously low self-esteem due to equating academic success with self-worth. And while Jesse’s mother demonstrates a clear reluctance to cut him off entirely, his father seems somewhat less conflicted, showing disinterest in Jesse’s sobriety and treating his infrequent reappearances as an intrusion on their lives. Jesse has a good heart, but starts the series selfish and without any real comprehension of consequences, not surprising for someone raised by “nice” people who weren’t really all that compassionate. Jesse doesn’t gravitate toward Walter because Walter acts abusively towards him but because Walt can give him the academic and parental validation he hinges his self-worth on, and because Walt, like his father, prioritizes the projected image of himself as a wholesome family man over actually being there for his family, or for Jesse.
In this essay I will-

This is a small moment but it leaves me with so many questions about the high school years…
There was apparently a point in the space-time continuum of Breaking Bad where Walter White cared about Jesse Pinkman for reasons that had nothing to do with himself and furthering his own interests. At least theoretically? You could make the argument that the success of Walt's students reflects well on him and gives him a sense of emotional satisfaction, but surely Walt doesn't have to leap to motivating the "hardest case" to get that. Why Jesse? We know Walt is painfully aware of having squandered his own "potential" in life, can he somehow intuit that the naturally intelligent but unfocused Jesse is in danger of doing the same? Is this empathy or projection on his part? While it's kind of darkly ironic/funny to chock it up to Mrs. Pinkman’s naïveté about science teacher Walter White and her wayward firstborn Jesse, it’s so much more interesting to take it at face value and assume Walt actually was capable of caring about someone outside his family for their own sake…at least, once upon a time.
Would Walt have jumped to partnering in the drug business with any ex-student he knew was in it, or is there something in Jesse in particular that made working together appealing for him? It’s funny how when Walt goes to his house in the pilot Jesse is expecting a lecture on the immorality of his actions, and instead we see that Walt is surprised and perhaps even a little impressed that his former screw-up student has entered a world that requires “moxie,” daring and leads to a big pay-out. I get the sense that Walt feels weirdly vindicated in his assumption that there was something more to Jesse, even though that “more” is doing highly illegal activities. Of course, a great deal of that satisfaction comes from seeing how Jesse's skillset benefits him, but as they go on he comes to genuinely care for his former student as much for who he is as what he can do to further Walt's own agenda.
His big mistake is to assume that Jesse shares the ambition that Walt squandered in his youth, when Jesse is in fact motivated more by childish rebellion, a craving for excitement/adventure and the desire for emotional connection far more than power, recognition or money.
So much of the emotional highs of the partnership on Walt's end seem to come from just how challenging Jesse is and how much he pushes back/is hard to manage that I almost wonder if Walt was so bored by his job as a high school teacher that he liked the class clown goofus kids the best because they broke up his days. It's almost as if Jesse's admiration/awe/loyalty and obedience are that much more valuable to him because they were hard-earned and come from the last person you'd expect it from (as opposed to Gale, perfect on paper Walt protege who kisses his ass and bores him in five seconds.)

im of the mind that jesse’s parents are not explicitly abusive or neglectful, like obviously it was shitty when they kicked him out of ginny’s house and you can make an argument about them “giving up” on him in the context of the show or even encouraging him to turn himself into the police in “el camino” but i don’t think they were abusive or neglectful at all. misguided, not always understanding, devoted to maintaining status and facades maybe but not uncaring towards their son. they probably didn’t understand what adhd meant, didn’t always encourage his more creative/offbeat interests and hobbies, didn’t know how to react or how to regain control when he started doing drugs. they probably made a lot of mistakes. but i genuinely like to believe that when jesse got diagnosed with JME and after he got in a minor wreck from seizing in the driver’s seat, his mom felt guilty. she wanted to connect with him, show him that she still loved him and didn’t ever want anything bad to happen to him. she went and got his medical id made after doing a little research on what a “cool” id would look like because he definitely wouldn’t wear a bracelet, and gave it to him. he turned it over in his hand, looking both surprised and hurt. “i thought you didn’t believe me,” he said, trying to sound snarky and mean but coming up short. coming up sad. “i do believe you,” she said even though she didn’t at first, she thought that maybe it was a drug thing before the tests came back, “i just want you to be safe, honey. no matter what.” and he didn’t say anything after that, but he put it on and he never takes it off, not until it’s taken by jack and collected as evidence and given back to diane. the talisman, the physical proof of her love for her son. the only thing left.

Breaking Bad!!
i just love the cinematic, plus i'm in love with every character, seriously, the actors are so chef's kiss.
+ Jesse and Jane :')))))
Tumblr media
The End Of The Fxxxing World :)
liking Alyssa is one of my personal traits, can't fight me on that.
the photography is soooo good and i fell in love with the vibes.
+ i think the plot is creative, and it has the right balance between more serious matters and lighter and funnier ones.
++ James and Alyssa >>>>>>>>
Tumblr media
Skins <3
actually the first two seasons, no hate to the others, i'm just very very affectionate to the characters.
at first i thought some instances would have triggered me, but i actually really enjoyed the ed representation Cassie gave.
+ i really like how some issues are portraied, and how every character is humanly flawed
Tumblr media
Bojack Horseman ;;;
well well well
this series formed me, and not in a necessarily good way, but u know...
i like to watch it every time i'm feeling blue, it doesn't cheer me up for sure, but it's a way to cope ig.
i love how issues are treated there, plus Todd is >>>>>>
and the fact that Aaron Paul is his voice makes everything even better.
+ some episodes are actual masterpieces
++ some quotes really made me cry n they are kind of relatable
Tumblr media
and that's all ig
i'm sorry if i made some mistakes, i'm not english lul ;-;

BIOGRAPHY( tw : // drug abuse, drug use, violence, neglect )
he was unleashed into a single bedroom apartment in queens; dingy furniture and a smoke screen, walls stained yellow and black, the air toxic in the form of mold and second-hand inhalation. he was just a child, his mother passing her sickness onto him and a father he'd never met, a name he'd never heard. he were raised on ruthlessness, survival, and necessity. he was never the most important thing to his poor mother, her illness always drawing her attention to other places, but even still, she’d always loved him. he wasn’t given the right to an easy life, primarily taking care of himself since he'd learned to walk and talk, and then by age ten taking care of their mother too at times. in the early years of his life he was a prodigy, infatuated with math and science and all things technology. the rise of the android had scarcely begun in those days, and he had no way of telling the technological advancements the city would soon make, or the dangers that would come with it. but this wouldn’t happen for years, by the time the first android walks among the city without the repulsion of the uncanny valley he would have long abandoned such passions, blood stained under his fingernails as he disguises himself as a goon.
first, he was a boy. thick-framed glasses and baggy clothes, a wide, child-like stare hardened into stone long before it began to soften once again. by fifteen he’d drawn blood for the first time with intention and brutality, a street scuffle between children verging on adulthood, the endless abyss between life forms, the open wound of youth taking over the rage of hormones; stand tall, defend what is yours. he walked away with shaking hands and hurried breath, footsteps pounding as he ran from the scene. it was just one slice of skin, a thin trickle of blood, not his first sight of its smear but the beginning of a new era. it took time before he grew a taste for violence, the initial promise of it making him sick, then in turn making him cold. he lost the passions he had, the innocence, for a time, becoming a machine built only for waking to see the next day. it took time to learn how to cope with this lifestyle, picked off the streets to run petty work by seventeen, no longer a boy but not yet a man; drops, pick ups, simple work ( illegal work ) to make the money to feed himself and his mother, to clean her off the floor a couple times a week. frailty turned into muscle and hardened stature, fear turned to mirth, mirth turned to humor.
soon small jobs became a full initiation, then they put a gun in one hand and a knife in the other. it was around this time he fell victim to the family habits, the drugs helping the mix of violence and hilarity, stoking it’s flames, creating a new persona out of the ashes of his history. he was a wild card; he was the one sent to do the things nobody else wanted to do, a butcher with a complete detachment from humanity, delivered with a fools wide grin and a quip readied at the back of his tongue. the hanging man destroyed him, but gave him a purpose, a twisted found family with the bitter nickname slipping past everyone’s lips, one he’d gained from days gone of pickpocketing and sucking the blood, so to speak, from businessmen and gangsters, “leech.” he embodied this, if nothing else to feel a sense of purpose, to feel needed. he was at best a glorified henchman, but his immense loyalty and perfectly grey morality made him essential, irreplaceable. he would do anything they asked between bouts of debauchery and recklessness, detriment balanced perfectly with chaos, unbridled destruction.
now he stays in his own apartment after having taken ownership of the bad monkey bar, visiting his mother every so often if only to check her pulse. he spends days outside of business indulging in drugs, alcohol, and other means of hedonism, his phone always close by. he’s most often found in clubs and bars, shrouded in smoke with an easy posture and a wide smile, bruised knuckles holding a drink in one and a cigarette in the other. don’t be nervous, his bark as loud as his bite is lethal, remains usually silent; a trained doberman with its tongue lolling out of its mouth, head cocked and lips pulled back in the image of a grin; only dangerous when his owner dangles a treat and says ‘devastate.’

Nervous Young Inhumans
Jesse Pinkman/OC/Jimmy/Saul
Chapter One
Halloween, 2004
"Hold still," she said, sitting between his crossed legs while he laughed. One of his hands on her waist, the other reaching behind her for the mirror where three lines were left.
She was finishing the eyeliner on him when he looked down behind her.
"Jesse!" she pulled away.
"What?" he kissed her, before putting the coke between their faces.
Ellie rolled her eyes and plugged her right nostril, grabbing the half of the straw they'd been using and snorting one of the lines while Jesse held them. He snorted the one next to it and set it down behind her again. Her legs were spread on both sides of Jesse's torso, their faces up close. She laughed and bit his shoulder.
"Now stop moving and let me finish this," she said.
***
2008
They'd been best friends in high school, and maybe something more, though it remained undefined. When Ellie moved across the country for college, they kept in relatively in touch. Kind of. Aside from him, she had no reason to visit Albuquerque. Her grandmother had died their senior year, and she'd grown up with her.
Now she'd been back for two months and she hadn't even let him now. She was working full time in the hospital, spending her weekends with the other doctors she'd met there, and pretending not to look for him in every face she met through the town. She hadn't bumped into his friends.
She'd visited his parents, who were happy to see her, proud she wasn't dating their junkie kid anymore, but was successfully finishing her surgerical residency. Though they didn't understand why she'd choose Albuquerque when any hospital in the country could've been a better choice.
It's true, there was nothing other than him keeping her there, and he wasn't even there. But even so, he was more than reason enough.
She was still in light blue scrubs when she pulled up at Jesse's house. Rather, his parent's house, the place she'd grown up calling his. From the passenger seat she grabbed the cookies she'd gotten as a thank you from a patient's family. Jesse's mom opened before she'd locked the car and ran out.
"Let me help you with that, sweetie!"
"Oh, it's really-"
"Diane? Is she here?" Adam called from inside.
"Hi Mr. Pinkman," Ellie called out while Diane took the cookies from her.
The two of them walked inside and she gave both of them a hug.
"Is Jake home?" Ellie asked.
"Yeah, yeah, he's upstairs, but he'll come down soon," Diane smiled, always fluttering, moving. She led the three of them to the dining room.
"Sorry I couldn't get changed before dinner, I finished my shift thirty minutes ago and just rushed over!"
"Nonsense! It's so good to see you like this! Isn't it, Adam?"
"Truly. We're so proud of you."
Ellie smiled. They kept talking while Mrs. Pinkman set the food on the table and called Jake down. The four of them sat down to dinner, for the third time since she'd moved back. She couldn't tell who was getting more from this, them or her. In either case, for all of them it was a substitute pleasure. What they all really wanted was the one person who none of them called.
"Well, rules are rules I guess," Diane was saying over dinner.
"Sure, rules are rules, I'm all for that," Adam replied, "but I'm telling you: you really shine on that oboe. You have real talent and I'm not just saying that."
Jake smiled proudly. "Thanks," he looked shyly at Ellie, who smiled back encouragingly.
"Do you like it then? The oboe?" Ellie asked.
"Uh, yeah. I think so."
"He's really talented," Diane insisted.
"Hey, uh, so how was soccer practice?" Mr. Pinkman asked, when the sound of the gate scraping outside made them all stop.
Ellie put her fork down, her heart raced. Diane and Adam looked at each other then back towards the sound.
"I think that was in our backyard," Mrs. Pinkman said.
The four of them stood up. Ellie moved faster than any of them and reached the door to the backyard, throwing it open while the whole family stood behind her inside.
"I'll check," Mr. Pinkman said.
Ellie walked down the flight of stairs, Adam behind her.
"Who's there?" he called.
She kept walking quietly, looking around. Her heart was beating quickly but she kept walking towards the lump laying in between the furniture.
"Get up," she snapped.
"Oh," she heard the relieved sighs behind her. She'd known from the first fucking sound.
"Shit," Jesse rolled over and looked up at her, "is this real?"
"Yes, it's fucking real. Get up."
He stumbled up, his foot caught on the lawn chair.
"Jesus," Ellie shook her head.
"El-" Jesse started but his mom cut him off.
"What are you doing here?" she shook her head, but unlike Ellie a small smile appeared on her face. The curse to being the parent of an addict is the codependence that never lets you forgive but also forces you to forget. You resent them, but you also love them to the point of madness, of wishful thinking and short-lived hopes.
"Hey mom, dad," Jesse tried to untangle himself from the chair, "I see you got new furniture," he looked back at Ellie, confused.
"I think I'm going, thank you for dinner," she said curtly, turning around.
"Ellie, wait," Jesse called but she gave a tight smile to both his parents and walked out of the house before he could catch up with her.
It wasn't until she parked her car outside the apartment building she lived in that she realized she could hear the blood flowing and her heart beating and she'd been crying on the drive home.
***
Diane must've given Jesse her phone number.
"For someone who doesn't want me dating her son, she's easily convinced," Ellie thought.
Thirteen missed calls since last night. It was a good thing they couldn't give him her address. Or was it a good thing? She didn't know how to feel. He'd clearly been high last night, sneaking into his parents house. Had he planned to knock or was he there to steal? She knew from him calling he was probably still there.
It was six thirty in the morning, he wouldn't be awake if she called him back anyways. Unless he was really coming down from something bad and was too tweaky to sleep. But she shook her head and put her phone away. She took a shower, packed herself some lunch and drank half a pot of coffee. Went through the motions of a normal day before work.
Didn't call.
Drove to the hospital, clocked in. Checked in on the patients, socialized with the staff.
Didn't call.
Lunch break. Surgery at 1:00. Surgery at 5:00.
Didn't call.
So went the day, Jesse's absence defining it as much as his presence.
***
Halloween, 2004
"Done," she smiled.
Jesse looked in the mirror smudged with both their breaths, flecks of coke.
"I look like a dick!"
"You look hot. Bowie in Labyrinth was my childhood crush."
"We've watched that movie like a hundred times, I know."
She laughed and kissed him, pulling his hair back and upwards.
"I should've gotten you a wig," she joked.
"Fuck you," he smiled.
She crossed her legs around his torso, pressed herself up to his chest. Nose to nose, her hands around his neck and his on her waist.
"I love you, dick," she whispered.
"I love you too."
He kissed her on the shoulder, on her neck, below her ear. He smiled before kissing her mouth, biting her lower lip slightly. They were constantly laughing against each other's necks, lips, biting and pulling each other's hair, childish, playful, the way they loved each other.
"We should get going," Ellie said.
"We should stay," he complained.
Her grandmother's apartment was practically hers at that point. She was living full time in the hospital now, even in between chemo sessions.
"What about Petey and Badger?"
"They'll manage."
"We're all dressed up," Ellie looked down at her white dress, nudged his made up face with her nose.
"I can fix that," he mumbled, pressing his face to her chest before starting to undo the laces of her dress.
Their senior year of high school she thought the world started and ended there, in that bed. Four years later and she still didn't know what else was supposed to be important to her.

Get to Know the Fanfic Writer
I got tagged by @hrh-spinach ! I haven’t been long on tumblr and haven’t followed a lot of my fellow fanfic writers yet, so if you stumble on this and want to give it a try, consider yourselves invited to :)
When did you post your first-ever fanfic?
2005, when I lived in the USA (no relation between the two facts, though). But  started writing as a teen in the glorious early 2000s I guess (yes, I’m ancient, ’83 baby you guys!)
First Character(s) you wrote?
Wrote for myself? Louis de Pointe du Lac from the Vampires Chronicles by Ann Rice. I loved Louis – but never hated Lestat though!
For actual online publishing value, I don’t remember if it was a Vision of Escaflowne fanfic (I was an anime dork) or a Michael Lee fic from Witch Hunter Robin. My most serious fanfic was starring Michael though. If you don’t know him he was a poor teenage white hat hacker imprisoned by the shady organization he hacked into for funsies. He was then forced to do computer related tasks for them to be allowed to stay alive. Poor kid even wears dogtags. Little did I know it was the start of my obsession for dog-coded characters that end up paying a heavy price for just wanting to have fun…
Main Character(s) you're currently writing?
Why, Jesse Pinkman of course.
It always sounds a little ridiculous to state it this way but I relate to him on so many levels... I'll keep it at the fact that his character development actually really helped me realize there were some things I owed to myself to refuse…
He is an advocate for anyone who's struggled with addiction, has ever felt inadequate, out of place and belittled for it... I love how so many different people will reinterpret and embrace him thanks to that.
Character(s) you haven't written about before but plan to soon?
Diane Pinkman? It’s the chapter after the one I’m finishing and I’m looking forward to writing her. Two Sides of a Coin has just been a huge excuse for writing from the POVs of many of the characters that are still alive around the timelines of Ozymandias/Granite State/Felina.
My favorite one of these chapters is Andrea’s though.
I'm still surprised I included Walt as a regular POV through the fic, never thought I had it in me to write him (but then I also wrote from Welker's and Kenny's of course Todd's POV, so... I have this need to understand the rationales that sustains assholes and what/who scares me... It's a trauma thing ^^;).
Fandom(s) you're currently writing?
Breaking Bad/BCS mostly. I’m a huge fan of Charlie Broker too - and of whenever Aaron Paul stars in a story that criticizes toxic masculinity, so I have a Black Mirror WIP as well.
Would love to write about some of my favorite French shows (Black Hearts, l’Opéra, very recently Polar Park a brand new series that I just binged, or Engrenages, or the Holy Grail Quest parody Kaamelot… so many of them!) but that would not touch many readers and for fanfics, I’m a comment whore.
Besides, I want to finish my 4 WIPs (I count the post ElCamino fic that will follow Two Sides of a Coin as an ongoing WIP because I’ve started writing it already in order to stay sane while I finish TSoaC!)
I also need to focus on my personal stories, so, not enough time for other fandoms!
Platonic Pairing(s) you're currently writing?
Oh my… I have this silly AU where Walt gets decommissioned and Jesse and Gale get to work together in the Superlab and they develop this silly puppy cute friendship. I was afraid it would be a bit morbid given what happens in canon, but I don’t know… I really think they could have been a support for one another in different circumstances! It's a crack fic this one XD
Next chapter: Gale feeds Jesse healthy food and Jesse is a bit upset that he has been given vegan food without knowing it because vegan food is weird, ok (even though he liked it)! As a retaliation, he will call Gale’s bullshit regarding the “freedom” of addicts to buy and use drugs once they’re hooked – especially when you produce a super pure crystal that is even more addictive.... Hypocritical much, Gale?
Jesse calling out anyone’s bullshit is always a treat to write!
Romantic Pairing(s) you're currently writing?
Cliff and Lana Stanfield from Black Mirror’s “Beyond the Sea”. I really love how the interpretation of the characters’ relationships evolve as you delve into the story. Not going to spoil but there is one scene between them that really turns the table and reveals the truth of their relationship and that really got to me…
Your top AO3 tags?
Character study would be the main, because I take writing fanfic as a character building exercise. A nice sandbox to practice in.
Toxic masculinity is also one of the main topics I end up regularly tackling one way or the other…
Backstory brainrot is another one, I guess? I can’t help falling into interpretative backstory madness…
Current platform you use for posting?
A long time ago, I used to be on fanfiction.net… But the interface hasn’t evolved and feels less user friendly. Nowadays only on AO3. I’m aware of the controversies. I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t looked into them because the platform is convenient and I’ve read some great fics there…Not proud of that.
Snippet of the WIP you are currently working on?
I’m not good at snippets! I tried and was about to share around 2500 words of next chapter ^^; So I won’t!
Regarding Two Sides of a Coin, I would love to publish next chapter soon(ish). I would actually love to start publishing my ElCamino/post ElCamino sequel sometimes at the end of the year but that doesn't seem realistic...
Next chapter is from Todd's POV (the last one normally, I cannot with him anymore but I have to commit to my writing plan no matter how hurtful it is to my soul!). I’m realizing most of the structure of the chapters of Part 4 will be built on the same model: flashbacks that allow me to give into my backstory frenzy and “current events” (we have made it to early July by now I think, September is getting closer!).
This chapter heavily rests on the working theory I’ve developed in the fic that even if Todd and Jesse were not friends per se during the Vamonos era, they had some kind of friendly relationship going on, though Jesse would have kept a bit of distance.
I see Todd as relationship starved and he started projecting more onto his intractions with Jesse than there really was (just always rememer this will never be a Todd/Jesse fic, ty!). Jesse on the other hand, at this point of the series, had been efficiently cut from all his supports - by Walter of course (Andrea, his family…) but also by Mike. The scene where Skinny and Badger stop by to bring the roadie cases and Mike is on the look-out so Jesse kicks them out asap is so sad and kind of infuriating. Full confession, I'm not a Mike stan even though I love him as a character and love what he brings to the story. So… regarding dudes his age that his two “mentors” allow him to talk to… Jesse’d have been limited to Todd at this point. And he needs connection, we know that… which is why I think and explore the idea that they did have some form of camaraderie that meant something very different for each of them until the events Dead freight…
Back to next chapter, Todd is really hard to write, so I take my time… I actually want to go a bit further with his character study and test some of his limits without breaking out of character. Tough ballance! It’s a bit of a challenge right now…

Every other aspect of Jesse’s trauma makes me go oh no poor blorbo :( but his relationship w his parents and thinking ab it in the context of the series aftermath actually makes me unwell… they never even knew him they only ever saw the worst in him and now they’ve had that validated by his own actions and they’ll never know how sorry he is and that he was a good kid at heart and they didn’t imagine it and they still love him but how can they have loved him if they never even knew him and only ever saw the worst in him *flatlines*

So, I finished Breaking Bad last night (watched Felina and El Camino.) Extremely gutting and tragic. What a freaking ride.
I keep thinking about the scene where Jesse calls his parents and reassures them that his decisions were not their fault and that they did their best. It was so beautiful—just an amazing moment of moral maturity for that character. The last time he saw them he literally blackmailed them into selling him back his aunt's house with the knowledge of the meth lab he put in the basement...and now he's apologizing in the only way he can, when he knows it's the last time he'll ever speak to them.

something that always kind of bugs me in brba fanworks is the portrayal of jake as this like prodigy supergenius. like, yeah, he was obviously smart, but really mostly he was Easy!! jake’s parents favored him over jesse not because he was special but because he was expected. he fit within the convential metric of success— straight as, sports star, band kid, upstanding citizen— so they could tell themselves, hey! we’re good parents!! we did something Right here. because at the end of the day, they didn’t neglect or abuse jesse, they really tried to help him— it’s just that they weren’t equipped for jesse. they didn’t know what to do with him, because he didn’t fit into any convential metrics for success. the world was not designed for neurodivergent people, and neither was their parenting!! it was designed for people like jake!!! when they looked at jesse, they felt like they had Failed at something. when they looked at jake, they felt like they had Won.
