1. what is your favorite film of all time?

It was and always will be 'The Matrix'. My uncle introduced it to me when I was 13 and it stuck with me ever since, I'm still obsessed with it and the whole Matrix universe almost 17 years later 💚 (and I mean OBSESSED. I even know the behind the scenes footage by heart)

Honourable mention: 'Papillon', fantastic movie and based on real events. Steve McQueen is marvellous in it 👌🏻

8. what’s your comfort film?

'Gone with the wind', reminds me of comfy movie afternoons with my mother and I love the book which the movie is based on 🤍

Honourable mention: 'The adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the desert', absolute wholesome and unhinged road movie 🚐

38. in your opinion what is the most overrated movie?

Hm, that's a tough one...after some thinking, I would say 'Titanic' (way too overrated for it being essentially just a romance movie) and 'The Irishman' (watched it and did not see the appeal of it in the slightest. Way too long for it being just meh in the storytelling department as well as not a good pace of events). Just my opinions though.

In a movie full of flamboyant costumes, this minidress adorned with pink and orange flip-flops definitely stands out for its original materials. It's got a definite 1960s vibe, between the length, the colors, and the "pop art" feel to it. Accessories include matching earrings, knee-high "gladiator" sandals, a cotton-candy-pink wig, and many large rings.

This was the first movie I ever saw Hugo Weaving in, so he wasn't cemented as "Agent Smith" in my mind, as he seems to have been for those who first encountered him in The Matrix. Consequently, I had no trouble shifting to viewing him as Elrond in the LOTR movies.

Thinking about the Holocaust in Africa.

Here, European notions of anti-Blackness and antisemitism became intertwined.

There was a fusion between the dispossession and racism of European imperialism and colonization projects of the late nineteenth century, and the prison regimes imposed by European fascism in the early twentieth century.

Scholars Sarah Abrevaya Stein and Aomar Boum have recently written much about the importance of recognizing the trauma of labor and internment camps in North Africa during the second world war.

And I want to express my gratitude for their work. I want to share some of what they’ve written in a couple of recent articles.

In their words: “Nazism in Europe was underlaid by an intricate matrix of racist, eugenicist and nationalist ideas. But the war – and the Holocaust – appears even more complex if historians take into account the racist and violent color wheel that spun in North Africa.” [1]

France's prison camps in North Africa were filled with Algerians, local Jews, deported European Jews, Eastern European refugees, domestic political dissidents from France, people fleeing fascist Spain, Moroccan residents, Senegalese subjects of French rule, other West Africans displaced by French occupation, and more.

The anti-Blackness and antisemitism that had fueled Europe's colonial expansion was finding new expression in fascist Europe.

Seems France is a central antagonist in the story of evolving approaches to empire, racism, and resource extraction.

After their 1940 alliance with the Nazis, the Vichy French government maintained technical control of French colonies across Africa. Beginning in 1940, the French government “alone built nearly 70 such camps in the Sahara.” [1] This was in addition to another six labor camps which the French government built in West Africa (in Senegal, Guinea, and Mali).

By the beginning of the twentieth century, French-influenced or -controlled territory in North Africa was home to around 500,000 Jews, many of whom had been living in the region for centuries or millennia, speaking many languages, “reflecting their many different cultures and ethnicities: Arabic, French, Tamazight – a Berber language – and Haketia, a form of Judeo-Spanish spoken in northern Morocco.” [1] The Vichy French government officially stripped North African Jews of formal citizenship and seized their assets.

Then, deporting residents of Europe and political dissidents in “early 1941, the Vichy authorities transferred hundreds of Jewish and non-Jewish refugees, including women and children, to the Saharan labor camps.” [2] Under French rule “in Algeria [...], it was estimated that 2,000-3,000 Jews were interned in camps [...] resulting in a total prisoner population of 15,000-20,000.” [2]  France pursued an “unrealized dream of the nineteenth century” [2]: the completion of the Mediterranean-Niger railroad line in the Sahara, a transportation route across the vast desert to connect the prosperous West African port of Dakar with the Mediterranean coast of Algeria.

Meanwhile the “Vichy regime [...] continued racist policies begun by France’s Third Republic, which pushed young Black men from the empire into forced military service,” including forced recruitment from “Senegal, French Guinea, Ivory Coast, Niger and Mauritania; [...] Benin, Gambia and Burkina Faso; and Muslim men from Morocco and Algeria. In these ways, the French carried on a wartime campaign of anti-Blackness and Islamophobia, pairing these forms of racialized hatred from the colonial era with antisemitism. Antisemitism had deep roots in French and colonial history, but it found new force in the era of fascism.” [1]

In late 1942, during the Nazi occupation of Tunisia, the SS “imprisoned some 5,000 Jewish men in roughly 40 forced labor and detention camps on the front lines and in cities like Tunis.” [2] The fascist Italian government had been experimenting with racist and anti-Black policy in their colonization of East Africa; these policies were expanded in Libya. Here, “Mussolini ordered the Jews of Cyrenaica moved” as “most of the 2,600 Jews deported [...] were sent to the camp of Giado” while “other Libyan Jews were deported to the camps of Buqbuq and Sidi Azaz.” [2]

Stein and Boum describe the diversity of prisoner experience: “In these camps, [...] the complex racist logic of Nazism and fascism took vivid form. Muslims arrested for anti-colonial activities were pressed into back-breaking labor” and “broke bread with other forced workers” including ‘Ukrainians, Americans, Germans, Russian Jews and others [...] arrested, deported and imprisoned by the Vichy regime after fleeing Franco’s Spain. There were political enemies of the Vichy and Nazi regime too, including socialists, communists, union members [...] overseen by [...] forcibly recruited [...] Moroccan and Black Senegalese men, who were often little more than prisoners themselves.” [1]

As Stein and Boum describe it: “Vichy North Africa became a unique site [...] where colonialism and fascism co-existed and overlapped.” [2]

They write: “Together, we have spent a decade gathering the voices of the diverse peoples who endured World War II in North Africa, across lines of race, class, language and region. Their letters, diaries, memoirs, poetry and oral histories are both defiant and broken. They express both faith and despair. All in all, they understood themselves to be trapped in a monstrous machine of fascism, occupation, violence and racism.” [1]

like it’s no secret that google collects your data and censors and manipulates the search results based on that, but here they said “what if google had direct access to your brain tho?? and didn’t just sell collected info to advertisers, but also without your knowledge used your brainpower during sleep to fucking mine bitcoin? bc like what could you do to stop it, when the society demands you to use it?” 

Akademiya is a very straightforward stand in for corporations - monopolistic force that de facto holds all the power in the country and ignores\manipulates the nominal leader (Kusanali). Ppl want to get into Akademiya bc that where all the power is cultivated, but from the researchers we meet we can see that it’s a cesspool of intrigues, with grueling demands where ppl have to abandon the themes they actually want to study bc they don’t get the funding, and often forced into military research bc of that. One woman literally ran away to the desert and paid the bandits to keep her locked in a cage bc thats better than Akademiya career fucking her over. But if you try to get away with research that is deemed a secret, they will send police enforcers to drag you back

the theme of broken and eaten dreams is also surprisingly coherent and poignant so far. We have many quests emphasizing how ppl had to gave up on their dreams and settle for career they didn’t want bc they needed to survive, and then in the Archon quests we learn that the adults don’t dream, bc their dreams are literally stolen and used by the Akademiya. They legit said that the broken dreams are not a coincidence of growing up, the system uses them as a fuel to keep up the matrix and tells you it’s your fault you couldn’t reach them

Any fiction recommendations? I’ve repeatedly read Locked Tomb, natch. I’d love something similarly brainwork inducing but maybe a touch lighter. Also not fantasy or sci fi…I need something to listen to while I do a ton of chores, and those can be hard (for me) because the unfamiliar proper nouns get confusing. :/

I'm terrible at reccing anything based on “if you liked TLT” because TLT is like five different genres in a trench coat, but I TRIED (⭐) Here are some brainworm-y recs that aren't sff — where by brainworm-y I mean that they stayed with me for a while after I finished them, but aren't overly confusing. (most of them are books, but available on audio)

Podcasts: a tumblr pal recced me the deviser based on me liking the eldritch elements of tlt; it's short and horror-y, and I really enjoyed it.

I haven't checked out the new TMA yet but I see many TLT peeps who are enjoying it (or S1 of the original The Magnus Archives could be a good entry point if you haven't ever listened to it)

TV: Unfortunately I hardly ever watch live action stuff BUT if you haven't seen either IWTV (the series not the film) or Yellowjackets, I do rec those! There's a lot of overlap between these fans and TLT fandom on my dash. His Dark Materials also goes hard and you might enjoy it (dysfunctional characters! worldbuilding! religious weirdness!) but it has more sff elements than other stuff I've recced. Oddball out of nowhere but The Great is a fun show if you enjoy the meme moments of TLT + people being gleefully horrible + having feelings despite your best intentions

Animanga: Utena (!!!!!) also Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, which occupies a very similar space to TLT in my brain

Books!

✧ I went through my “women unhinged” goodreads shelf and found some books that are avaliable in audio format, and might appeal. These are wildly varied in scope and ngl the criterion was just “at least one person (besides myself) who enjoyed tlt also this book” and the similarities stop there. It's all vibes baby! Still, I tried

my heart is a chainsaw by stephen graham jones (horror, slasher), bunny by mona awad (horror, wildly unhinged), the witching hour by anne rice (horror, gothic)

matrix by lauren groff (historical, lesbian nuns), anything by sarah waters (historical fiction + lesbians), rebecca by daphne du maurier (historical, gothic)

the plot by jean hanff korelitz (litfic, thriller), sadie by courtney summers (thriller, coming of age). anything by gillian flynn (thrillers with terrible women).

✧ I really enjoy Tana French thrillers for the strong sense of place, great prose, and the complete emotional turmoil of her character-centric narratives. If anything sounds up your alley, I enjoyed the witch's elm + dublin murder squad series. They're murder mystery procedural but the messy characters really elevate the novels. Available in audiobook also

✧ American Elsewhere, technically scifi but set in New Mexico. Somehow, cosmic horrors who have taken over a quaint little town and worse! They are enforcing HETERONORMATIVITY upon it! They also have tentacles. The main character rocks

✧ Sundial by Catriona Ward: insane, gripping psychological horror. A mother and her unsettling daughter take a trip to the isolate desert ranch where the main chracter grew up. Surrounded by unsettling science experiments

✧ A Touch of Jen by Beth Morgan: when the parasocial relationship is so strong, it accidentally summons a hellmonster from another dimension

✧ SFF adjacent, sorry, but set in the real world (historical, tho) — Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge, a middle grade novel with fairytale elements that gave me more brainworms than any kids book ought to, mostly because I LOVED the main character. She occupies a very similar place in my brain as Gideon does. This is actually the only book on the list that I'm not sure is available in audio format, but if you get a chance and it's up your alley, I'd check it out

the night is quiet at 3 AM. in the Michigan cold of the week past Martian ides not even the peepers chirp in the waxing moonlit bright. at this hour there is but one car in the road.

in a red shitbeater truck half rusted at the undersides from winter salt and aged abuse, a young woman sits at the wheel. her leather flight jacket, a scratched up she/her pin and "a better world is possible" pin tagged to a pocket, tucks a greasy black fastfood uniform close to her uncomfortably sweaty skin, the once warm moisture drawn clammy with the chill air. the heater hasn't warmed yet.

a nametag beneath the jacket reads "Adelaide".

she's distracted, admittedly. she self-consciously thumbs at a bit of hardly noticable stubble on her chin. the drive home is always long at this hour. her attention, usually rapt to the narrow two lane highway (as well as it can be when exhausted) is instead drawn away to the phone in her hand, its Bluetooth on and connected to a speaker in the passenger seat; the console of the truck still ran a tape deck she didnt have casettes for.

she doesn't notice the deer. not until it's too late, of course. her training as a driver quickly echoes bullhorn-like through her skull: don't swerve, brake. she slams the pedal as hard as she can, keeping the wheel steady. she braces for impact.

impact never arrives. adelaide watches as her truck rapidly disassembles piece by piece, it's hood shooting away as if possessed by the hand of God - but it doesn't end there, for each part in front follows like a wave outward: the radiator grill tears assunder, fan blades shred, a battery is reduced to its component lead and acid and casing respectively, a piston comes free from the engine, then another and another, until the front cabin and front chassis are stripped bare like a carcass in the desert sun.

but it continues. the frame, the wheels, the glass, all torn away with the cold grace of a tornado's breeze. it crumbles to unfine dust, all of it in pieces at once, but to the poor girl in the driver's seat the once is many moments, cycles of eternity in terror transfixed over brown eyes. the steering wheel, the driver's console, the tape deck, flies away like birds fleeing catastrophic weather. the first pieces of debris make impact with the road, skidding with unholy screeches and pings of ricochet.

but it continues. after the steering column the wave of destruction consumes adelaide. her hands shred apart bone by bone, muscle and tendon unhooking from sinew; and then greater as bone unhooks from marrow, vein unhooks from interstitial matrix, arteries unhook from capilaries, joints unseat and separate. her sinew sprays apart in neat lines, meat lines, their strands unweaving less like the total body disruption of a grenade and more like a careful undoing of fabric stitches. she screams but it is cut short as her teeth unslot from her jaw with sickening noise, tongue unsticks from the bottom of her mouth, and aveoli are split into bubbles of cellular interface. blood, at last, begins to splatter against what remains to splatter against. the rest becomes fine mist.

adelaide's eyes lock with the deer's cold black beads as they are torn from her sockets. the moonlit night goes black. all is truly quiet.

gasping.

She wakes up gasping, already running. Her lungs ache for air as if they have never before, loud body shaking pants echoing in the night air around her.

the ground feels rough and graveled beneath Her paws, Her body lunging in long strides forward as She flees the horrible screech of sirens and flaring lights. it's cold; the frost aches and chills against Her fur, matted and bloody with shards of glass and metal. the scared beast skitters off the highway black into dew-tippled green, leaving a trail of red dripping from Her shaggy coat as She runs, runs as fast as the wordless thought in Her mind can carry Her, through fields and forward through forests as fences flatten under her stride. run, gotta run, gotta run away. the frightened limb numbing adrenaline of flight or fight carries Her long into the moonlight, even as behind the gargantuan, sinewy beast, a coterie of ambulances and firetrucks pull up to the flaming wreckage of a red pickup truck circa 1995 pulled apart so meticulously as to not be even recognizable as a truck, even while a deer near by eats from the lowest boughs of a maple.

the night is quiet at 3 AM. in the Michigan cold of the week past Martian ides not even the peepers chirp in the waxing moonlit bright. at this hour there is but one car in the road - scattered and disassembled, surrounded by parked emergency vehicles.

I got way too many ideas, and now they're performing crossovers:

Like Do as the Romans had Done getting zapped into G1.

June: There is no such thing as the perfect man.

G1 Optimus making puns and being sweet with the kids when their Optimus and Smokescreen are handling new active hotspots that may be their ticket home.

June: Dammit.

June's internal struggle with G1 OP because she's has to deal the intimate knowledge she banged his alternative self and knows the sight, taste, and feeling of his dick as well as how sensitive his audials are.

Cyber!Earth inhabitants - newly transformed, acquired, and/or conquered - appearing in the Bayverse!AU where Mikaela is a Dragon.

Bayverse (Autobots, United States military, and the Foundation) is flipping out because of the active Titan. But said Titan refuses to budge away from the shores of Diego Garcia base, much less let anyone else into its space of its city-mode.

It's gonna be awkward for Bayverse!Optimus since he's a Prime of Prima's spark-lineage, and Titan doesn't like that particular Prime.

Diego Garcia will become quite a hotspot because not only does it host space alien refugees and the first Dragon in several ages, but a living city and quite a few active practitioners and alchemists.

The confusion by Cyber!Earth inhabitants have with Bayverse since their Earth is terrifyingly different: these oceans have limits? There are no catastrophic storms or immense whirlpools? Where are the towering forests of semi-sentient trees and the deserts filled with ghostly spirits? The cities here are bustling alive with millions and not empty hellscapes of metal and winter? Plus, them trying to hash out the existing agreements by the other Primes with the Bayverse!Autobots.

More Other!TFP!Humanformers and G1 because I totally imagine Miko, the tiny War-Forged Seeker sparkling she is, would try her damn best to take a huge bite out of a Quintesson if it ever showed its tentacles and five-faces in that verse.

The June-is-Megatronus!AU meets Bayverse: a moment where she accidentally transports herself, injured Optimus, and Smokescreen to Diego Garcia.

The Hammer is still functional because June picked up some things Ratchet... and then through caution to wind by hooking up her own systems and cabling into Optimus and basically jumpstarted him like a living battery, spark to spark. (TFP!Ratchet would be yelling at her. Bayverse! definitely done so)

TFP!Optimus is having some weird visions by the Matrix, June goes into a trance and walks into the sea with no notice, and Smokescreen is Smokescreen.

Optimus vomits salt water and cockles and aquatic life as June hauls out a revived Jazz... who then stabs her out of reflex and she freezes the mech out of defense.

Now, there are multiple people having a meltdown or a crisis, but June has an idea (a dangerous and ridiculous one) on how to get back to their universe.
