My Deardorff in Patapsco Woods. The shutter broke, and I neglected my 25+ years of movie camera assisting and didn’t bring a backup. I should have expected it to break, it’s happened before, it’s a 1950′s shutter. I do love the Petzval lens. Canon 1V, Sigma 24mm. Kodak TRI-X. NIK

“Boiler Bay, Oregon, December 2022”
©2022 Gary L. Quay
I took a trip to the Oregon Coast for my "Places of Doom" project. I was there to get pictures of a little body of water called Dope Creek, which turned out to be nigh impossible. Boiler Bay almost qualifies as a Place of Doom because of the way it git it name. A ship ran aground and exploded in 1910, and all that remains is the boiler, which can be seen at very low tides. I did manage to photograph Dope Creek at a distance, and got some Lensbaby pictures of the "Devil's Punchbowl", which is on the list of Places of Doom, but the feature - a sea cave where the roof fell in - is not very picturesque. I hoped that the Lansbaby Edge 35 would bring it to life.
I'm mostly happy with the developement of this one, but there was a light leak in the lower left corner, which I leaned up in Photoshop. I will have to test that film holder.
Camera: Deardorff 8x10
Lens: 10" Kodak Commercial Ektar

Massive step up lens board adapter. This adapter goes from a 8 inch lensboard and takes a 10 inch board. It has to mushroom forward about an inch to clear hardware on the front of the camera. #skgrimes #lensboardadapter #deardorff https://www.instagram.com/p/Cr1JDUSuG1U/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Lindenwood MCC: Spring Year 1 #109
Tumblr media
And now for a mini tour of the Military Barracks. The original lot is called Medieval Fortress by Versailles1798 on MTS. I just made some small changes & gave it a new coat of paint. 😁
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The barracks has a small library. The more studious members of the military spend a lot of time here researching battle tactics and historical technology.
Tumblr media
A door in the library leads to the tiny jail cell, where Anne Bellwether will be spending the next few days.
Tumblr media
The barracks also boasts a workshop where soldiers can repair their armor & work on their horse's gear.
Tumblr media
There are several lookout areas. This one is right outside the sleeping quarters. The scouts trade off who is on lookout each night.
Tumblr media
From the tower and the highest lookout spot, the guards can see all the way to the sea.
Tumblr media
Every night, the guard dines together in the mess hall.
Tumblr media
After dinner, someone always burns incense on Gilgamesh's altar before the night watch begins.
Tumblr media
Making sure all the torches are lit is a nightly duty...
Tumblr media
...as is cleaning out the gong pit.
Tumblr media
Finally, the night watch takes their posts.
Tumblr media
And the barracks remain quiet until daybreak.

One of his earliest recollections is of being sick when he was six and a half. "I had appendicitis. I remember being carried downstairs to the ambulance. I saw all my aunties and uncles sitting around in the kitchen as I passed. At the hospital there was this doctor. he may not have done it - this is just how it felt - but he was sort of bashing me in the stomach, or so I thought. And I remember" - he exploded into laughter - "I remember thinking, He shouldn't do that! I'm not well!"
-
Ringo was 13 when his mother married again. "What is funny," he went on, his voice filled with incredulity, "is that she asked me, you know: 'Do you mind if we get married?' No! No! Because I loved him anyway. He'd been coming around for four or five years, and he was like a dad to me. You know, there was none of that 'Look here, we're getting married!' It was nice to know that you counted, even at that age. [...]
After the wedding, Ringo continued, he began calling his mother Elsie and his stepfather Harry. "I didn't call her Mum any more because, the thing is, I didn't like saying 'Mother' to her and then 'Harry' to my stepfather. I changed that to make him feel better, and my mother understood.
"Harry," he said softly, "is a gentle man. You know, gentle. Not as in gentleman, though he's that too. He's patient and kind. He loves kids and animals. You know, people say that kids and animals can always tell if someone's good or if he's dirt, and they always like Harry. I know I always did."
-
They stayed in Brighton for several days. A local shop wrote to ask if Ringo and his wife would accept a poodle as a wedding present. There were no strings attached, not even publicity for the shop, and Ringo and Maureen accepted gladly. They are devoted to the dog.
"It's the smallest poodle you can get, just a tiny ball of fluff - peach fluff," he told me. "We call him Tiger, only it's a she. Well, you see, when she came she was so small we couldn't tell; we thought she was a boy. She's house-trained, though - anywhere in the house," he quipped.

the brother within: #3
3) being liminal, the dog is the guardian of the threshold, and is thereby a protector of hearth and home, of structure and tradition; and, – Daniel Deardorff, The Other Within: The Genius of Deformity in Myth, Culture & Psyche
When Sam was two months old, a wasp flew in the window and landed on his tummy. Mom had fallen asleep for just a minute, Dean knew she needed a minute sometimes so he didn't wake her up, he stood by the crib and watched the wasp's pointy brown body moving in circles against Sam's so-soft onesie. Sam hadn't noticed yet. Dean put two of his fingers on Sam's tummy and the wasp crawled onto them and it felt gross but he held his breath and walked to the window and the wasp flew back out before he even got there. He went back and Sam was looking at him, and Dean said, "you're ohhhh-kay," the way Dad said it sometimes, which meant that it was.
---
Dean started crying and couldn't stop when Mr. Darling sent Nana out to the doghouse when he watched Peter Pan. He never did finish the movie.
---
There comes a time when Sam has an imaginary friend and Dean doesn't much like it. There comes a time when Sam has a secret dog during secret Flagstaff and Dean doesn't like that either. There comes a time when Sam has both a girlfriend and a dog that Dean doesn't know and that's shitty too.
Dean doesn't like dogs in his car. Dean paid attention to that one Aesop's Fable about the manger, but he doesn't think it applies to him, not really. Who uses mangers anymore anyhow? They'd just burn up in the fire and take the baby messiah with them.
---
"Good boy," Dad says, tired, and hauls Dean onto his lap all sprawled and sideways so he can swizzle his fingertips into Dean's hair and then wrap him up in a tight hug. "You're always taking care of us," Dad mumbles against the side of Dean's head, fingers moving behind Dean's ear as he sighs. They both smell like the tomato and rice soup Dean had managed to cobble together out of a tin of Campbell's and some leftover fried rice, and the tang of it isn't exactly the nicest but it's comforting. Like home. Sam's on the other end of the sofa conked out from eating the last tin of pudding, and Dean turns around until he can settle against Dad properly. The rise and fall of Dad's stomach, the occasional thick way he clears his throat -- he swallowed some kind of ectoplasm on the last hunt and it's still working through his system -- and the swish of Dad's fingers through his hair. Dean's getting too big for this, he knows. But for tonight he made it all feel right, he did it all good, and his brother and father are sleepy and quiet and Dean's a good boy.
---
He wasn't gonna fuck a poodle, come on. Not one that looked like that.
---
"You're me but backwards," Chuck says to him at one point. Dean's still stinging from the don't confuse me with your dad remark, especially since technically Chuck is supposed to be basically everyone's dad, otherwise what's the whole frigging point of the Our Father?
"You're backwards," is what Dean says, and Chuck grins and shoots finger guns at him. "You should've kept your dad's dog tags," Chuck says. "You know what I do with lukewarm things. You should commit to the motif."
Dean doesn't ask what the hell Chuck's talking about. Dean leaves it alone.
---
Sam's the one who guts the hellhound. Dean can't do anything but watch.
---
The bunker is the best place they've ever been and Dean doesn't waste time in making it a home, because Dean knows better than to waste time. For a while after that extra forty in Hell he'd counted his age in dog years, because that seemed to make more sense. But most of that wasn't really living. Most of that was a choke chain, and sometimes he still feels it biting into his throat in Alastair's voice, and Azazel's, and John's. He feels bad about that last one and he doesn't. Dad had outlasted him in Hell, after all. If anybody would understand it would be him.
---
Sometimes, Dean thinks, all of their hard work and sacrifice isn't what they're left with in the end. It all comes down to a miracle.

Still messing around with these Patapsco Woods, Deardorff 8x10 shots. Using an old 1900′s Petzval. Not sure what I’m getting at or going for, but working at finding a new genre to travel with a diff lens, and format. Just soured on two image directions I’d worked for over 20 years. Now to next step, publish both of those series. Ilford HP5. NIK

Museo d’Arte della città di Ravenna October 11, 2020 - January 10, 2021  Exhibition curated by Chiara Bardelli Nonino
Paolo Roversi – Studio Luce is a unique opportunity to get to know the work of the great photographer Paolo Roversi. Paolo Roversi was born in Ravenna in 1947. In 1973 he moved to Paris, where he still lives and works in his studio in Rue Paul Fort – the very same Studio Luce the exhibition/book is named after.
The photographs contain numerous references to his hometown, Ravenna, the place that more than any other has shaped his imagination. His first fashion photographs and a series of portraits of friends and artists, are alternated with still lifes of stools collected in the street or those of Paolo’s long-trusted Deardorff camera. Among his most recent works, some shots for the Pirelli 2020 Calendar, as well as a series of previously unreleased fashion shots from his decades of work for brands such as DIOR and Comme des Garçons and for magazines such as Vogue Italia.
As a tribute to the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante Alighieri’s death, there’s a vast selection of shots directly from Roversi’s archive that celebrate and reinvent the figure of the muse – as an ideal reference to Dante’s Beatrice from the Divina Commedia – interpreted here in a contemporary way by iconic women such as Natalia Vodianova, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Rihanna.
