SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Daydream Believer” " as filmed in May 2010 by PBS at Benedum Theatre in Pittsburgh PA w/Davy Jones, Jessica Pacheco, me, and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra—this clip has been re-broadcasted many times since 2011. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOT0INql6Ws   For me this was an auspicious occasion on several counts—including that, for the first time, I played guitar on songs that I usually played bass or keyboards on. Elsewhere on this shoot (we were there 2 days) was Jay Black (Jay & The Americans), Roger McGuinn, The Miracles (the classic line-up minus Smokey Robinson), and Gary Lewis & The Playboys w/my friend, drummer Mike Arturi. Also, I was blessed to spend time with Jackie DeShannon (who MC'd) and Chad & Jeremy. The project was produced for PBS by Jim Pierson.

“Daydream Believer” had been rejected by 3 bands before reaching The Monkees. The eternally-cheerful tune was written by John Stewart, who’d just left The Kingston Trio. Stewart passed the song to his friend, Monkees producer Chip Douglas, who tacked it on as “album filler” during the 1967 sessions for the PISCES AQUARIUS CAPRICORN & JONES album. All four Monkees worked on the track with The Wrecking Crew, with Michael Nesmith doing guitar harmonic stingers, and Peter Tork playing the piano opening that made the song pop. Davy was reticent to sing it as it was cut for a tenor and he was a baritone, but he soldiered through. Then the track was shelved.

Unexpectedly, in October 1967 Colgems Records released “Daydream Believer” as a single and it became a surprise hit for Christmas (like 1000s of kids with “a Christmas story” connected to it, I was given the pic sleeve 45 by my Aunt Lil). The song has since been covered scores of times in eclectic styles, including a punk version by Japanese band Shonen Knife. I calculated that, in his life, Davy must’ve sung it live upwards to 10,000 times. In shows he stuck to the common arrangement, though I heard him do it country style, and we performed it several times with symphony orchestras at pops concerts. In 2000 he and I released a techno-dance version of it, which got some club play in Russia and Scandanavia. Of the many stories Davy could tell about this song, one he liked was when he and Mick Fleetwood played it in the dead of winter at a Norwegian venue near the Arctic Circle. “He was bangin’ away with his mouth hangin’ open, doin’ the Mick Fleetwood beat. This set is culled from an online benefit concert for the San Mateo Medical Center Music & Healing Concert Series, a project created by Frances Ancheta Baker, singer-songwriter and creative arts therapist. San Mateo Medical Center was featured in Newsweek Magazine as one of the top 400 nursing homes in the USA, gaining a reputation for innovative and compassionate care to the most vulnerable and ethnically diverse populations of San Mateo County (California)—including many uninsured, minority, psychiatric, and chronically ill populations. The Music and Healing Concert Series is part of the SMMC's mission in providing a holistic and healing environment for the patients who need help and support, providing a calming, humane experience in a sometimes overwhelming and intimidating environment. I'm glad to be part of this "music as healing" movement in assisted living homes in California and Oregon. I was one of 10+ acts (including my friend Chris von Sneidern) that played in this 3-hour online concert marathon (read technical note below*). My set list: 1. Douglas Vandergraph continues his journey of teaching others how to accomplish their dreams and goals by reminding them, " What’s the greatest gift that humans have?" Douglas believes it is our imagination. It’s a gift we use to go anywhere and do anything we want. We used this gift very well and without doubting its power until age four or five. We used it to build beautiful pictures in our minds of things we wanted to do and places we wanted to go. We even saw ourselves with special powers, such as flying or leaping to the roofs of buildings. But that all started to change soon after we went off to school. Then teachers and other well-meaning adults scolded us for using our imagination. They called it not paying attention or daydreaming. So, we stopped fantasizing. In this video, Douglas advocates for connecting to the child that still lives within us. He asks that you dance, sing, take risks, and live the life you want by using the original behaviors that, as a child, made the world an adventure with limitless possibilities. Douglas is putting himself out there as an example to others so they can see how anyone can take a chance, improve daily, and make a difference in the lives of others. CASH-GRAB QUICKIE GREATEST HITS, #3. Only curmudgeons wouldn’t like this imitation of what the sixties sounded like. Lots of gems and with the studio cats backing them up the Prefab Four sound great. Except on this cheapie off-brand album the mixes and mastering are all over the place. So some songs (Clarksville, Believer, Pleasant Valley) sound clear and great and some (a lot of the ones I don’t really know plus Daydream Believer) are sort of distorted. Look at all the famous songwriters who chipped in, though. And they’re ripping off *everybody* from The Who and Mamas and Papas to Kinks to Lovin’ Spoonful to obviously Beatles and mid-60s Stones. Everybody’s a source! It’s not copy-catting, it’s seeking multiple sources of inspiration! Then creating, uh, tributes!
