It’s always a warm delicious treat to sit down with James Lee Stanley. There’s a reason he’s opened for everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Art Garfunkle, Bill Cosby (before we knew), Robin Williams, Dionne Warwick, Robin Trower, and Steven Wright for 3 years. His 50+ years of friendship and musical partnership with Peter Tork were covered from start till two days before Peter’s passing when he was felled by rare cancer under his tongue. Shockingly, James survived his own bout of tongue cancer months later, when his beloved wife Evelina suggested an endoscopy, without cause. James was back performing mere months later. Last September, days after sitting down with us here, James fell off his roof, for the first time not under the watchful eye of his Evelina, broke his back, was airlifted for surgery, took no pain meds, and did a concert two weeks after surgery. This is a substance- sans substances. 

James treated us to a solo rendition of All I Ever Wanted, one of the many songs he and Peter recorded together.  Just today he posted a video of them performing it: https://youtu.be/9VmeUvSYS1A. James also treated us to fab, funny, apropos, Wake The Flock Up, one of my favorite cuts from his All Wood And Doors, Moonlight Drive, and to the ink just dried, brand new, Carnival. Gorgeous vocals and stunning guitars are James’ trademarks. 

We talked about his All Wood And Stones, Doors, and Led series, what inspired it, the players who’ve graced it, his upcoming album, his 36th, the documentary, The Opening Act – The Extraordinary Journey of James Lee Stanley directed by documentarian Gary J Katz (Badfinger, Humble Pie, Steve Marriott, Manassas), which has received a Peoples Choice Award,  was in the London Lift-Off Film Festival and was accepted into the LA, Chicago, and Atlanta Film Festivals, awaiting judging.

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Early Morning Blues & Greens” (live 2013) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v_Aud76QR8 This song was written by Diane Hildebrand and Jack Keller, who wrote several cuts in the early Monkees album catalogue. Keller was part of the Brill Building/Don Kirshner songwriting stable in league with Howard Greenfield and Neil Sedaka. Hildebrand was more of a free spirit. In 1969 she released her own "underground pop" album with this song as the masthead. She also wrote for other artists and TV shows and released music under the name Joya Diane Skye.

Peter Tork adopted this song, usually associated with Davy Jones as a "deep cut" from The Monkees's HEADQUARTERS album. On this performance, Peter sang lead and played a bluesy guitar at a Monkees Convention in New Jersey 3-2-13. I sang harmonies and played bass in a "Monkees House Band" (i.e. Monkees road band alumni) with (the late) David "Loafy" Alexander, Rich Dart, Aviva Maloney + guitarist Damian Fanelli sitting in. We backed Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork with a night of music. And, we’re good friends. Always crazy fun, James is a big man with huge talent. We’ll be chatting and he’ll be singing. Win/Win! 

James Lee’s shared the stage with everyone from Bonnie Raitt to Robin Williams, Dionne Warwick to Steven Wright, Art Garfunkel to Robin Trower; sometimes spending as much as 300 days a year on the road.

He’s released 35 CD’s, recording the 36th, and 37, an instrumental, is in the works;  three are duet CD’s with Peter Tork; A Beachwood Christmas with Tom Paxton, Peter Tork, and Pamala Stanley; All Wood and Stones-a duet CD with John Batdorf; All Wood and Doors-a duet CD with Cliff Eberhardt, All Wood and Stones II with John Batdorf, and All Wood and Led with Dan Navarro, as well as the original cast recording of Straight From the Heart - The Musical, which he produced, performed in and wrote the book, lyrics, and music.

James Lee wrote the Top Five hit, Coming Out of Hiding, as well as the hits I Don’t Want To Talk About It; Plenty of Reason; All I Ever Wanted; and Make It Tonight.; scored the Emmy Award Winning CATHY Specials for Prime Time CBS-TV, the Cable Ace Award-Winning Tom Parks HBO Special, and the Award-Winning Tom Parks Diabetes Documentary; has produced the artists' Mike Pinder/Moody Blues, Nicolette Larson, and Peter Tork, amongst many others.

Last October, just after our last visit,  James Lee Fell off his roof, broke 9 ribs and  2 vertebrae, had a concussion, and then spinal fusion surgery.  He did a concert two weeks after the surgery.  WHAT? His,  Another Radio Show on Folkmusicnotebook.com is in its third year. 

I adore this man and his music… he wants you to know, his hair still hasn’t grown back. I’ll happily take him as is. He’s got “it” with or without it.
