Finally getting around to showing off what the kids got me for Christmas! It was a very @damonalbarn Christmas (he’s the singer and a songwriter in @blurofficial and the main force behind @gorillaz , apart from the illustrator #jamiehewlett). I put various don’t-have-yet albums on a list and this is where they went (don’t tell them I might have already had a couple; easily remedied). #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylcommunity #vinylfreak #33andathird #33rpm #onmyturntable #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #hoppervinyl #cvhoppervinyl #nowplaying #nowplayingonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7HhJxEgOC-/?igshid=dm44ok6cmk9g

California, No. 4. Know what I like about all this vinyl nonsense? Listening so deliberately with no skipping starts putting songs I’ve heard so much I don’t hear them anymore back into their original contexts and refreshing them. Example: I’ve heard Fire and Rain too often and have learned to screen out the sadness and ignore that growling cello or bass or whatever it is, which only barely obeys the song chord changes. It’s really effective and ominous like a musical version of Churchill’s Black Dog of Depression, and lyrically elemental stuff like rain fire sunshine moonlight highways frost etc runs through the whole set. Note: hi, Russ Kunkel! I saw Russ play drums for Lyle Lovett in Michigan this summer but here he is preserved in 1971 amber. #jamestaylor #singersongwriter #1970s #sweetbabyjames #fireandrain #countryroad #russkunkel #peterasher #dannykortchmar #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylcommunity #vinylfreak #33andathird #33rpm #onmyturntable #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #hoppervinyl #cvhoppervinyl #nowplaying #nowplayingonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5UJVSEAiFz/?igshid=ju0whwckvquf

POLITICAL OVERTONES, no.1. Makes me think of the quote when Roger Ebert said that a movie is a machine that creates empathy. This is the play. I saw it produced at IU and I think it’s more effective than the movie which gets distracted by Liza with a Z, it seems to me, and I left this play feeling so empathetic to those Berliners than I would have ever thought possible for a cheerfully debauched, cleverly lyric-ed, fabulous Broadway show (it was the IU student actors and they were terrific, there in the 80s). Lotte Lenya’s plight in particular is so heartbreaking, even as she decides incorrectly. Talk about the wrong side of history. And again: it’s too GD relevant again! #cabaret #musical #musicals #joelgrey #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylcommunity #vinylfreak #33andathird #33rpm #onmyturntable #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #hoppervinyl #cvhoppervinyl #nowplaying #nowplayingonvinyl #latergram (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2AbQ5AgQxE/?igshid=ph93hozi8rvv

ALBUMS I HAVE BECAUSE OF DAVID HATFIELD #1. Over on the West side of Indy where David and I met and started a high school rock band, today was 500 Race Day. So “Rapid Roy That Stock Car Boy” isn’t exactly perfect for the occasion, but it’s so fun, why not. That is a fun song. David and his brothers had eclectic tastes like a lot of seventies album listeners, and for this post I could have gone with anything from Chicago to Zappa to Paul Simon to Led Zep. We Topher Graces and Ashton Kutchers listened to a melting pot of albums (David and I were pretty young, younger than the guys on That 70s Show, as we hung out listening to his and his brothers’ albums; but it was legit 70s contemporaneous listening). Today with the whole seventies vibe making a huge comeback I’m sometimes amused like when at work a guy was playing 70s songs on a playlist and that was cool but it went from Fleetwood Mac to Velvet Underground at one point, which wouldn’t have happened, at least on the west side of Indy. It’s similar to how my son was listening to a playlist the other day and I heard him jamming to “Operator (That’s Not The Way It Feels)” off this album and it was just so, I don’t know—Croce never shied away from sentiment to the point where a lot of his songs were dripping with sentimentally square mainstream maudlin-ness and probably not what a high school dude would have been blasting back in the day. Who knows, of course, but it would have just been on the radio all the time, everywhere, so... I guess I’m losing my point. My point is that the 70s stuff is all re-contextualized now. ‘That’s not the way it feels,’ as the song says. In other news, check the initial caps on Time and Eternity in the typed-out lyrics to “Time In a Bottle.” Heavy stuff, dude. Deep. #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylalbum #jimcroce #jimcrocesongs #youdontmessaroundwithjim #timeinabottle #operatorthatsnotthewayitfeels #rapidroythatstockcarboy #vinylcommunity #hoppervinyl #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx9E0XpA58J/?igshid=k5remjyzrzsl

ALBUMS I HAVE BECAUSE OF BRENT MCKIM, #2. Heeeere it is, I haven’t lost it (see previous vinyl album post). Been singing “Won’t Get Fooled Again” to myself since Jimmy Fallon and The Who (abridged) and The Roots did their toy instrument version, and it kind of felt unresolved when I went to listen to this and couldn’t find it the other night. So many FM radio standards here. Definitely bought this because of Brent, and I remember him sort of narrating and curating my first listens, including singing “Do ya?” along with low-in-the-mix-easy-to-miss Daltrey line, after the lyric “I know that the hypnotized never lie.” Favorite moments: 1. Entwhistle bass line in the “tip my hat to the new constitution” part of “Fooled.” 2. Entwhistle bass entrance in “Getting In Tune.” 3. Every Keith Moon drum entrance, including the multiple chances he gets to enter in “Fooled;” they’re all kind of the same but they’re all monstrous and awesome. 4. The nearly standardized pattern of “Daltrey on verse/chorus, Townshend on bridge.” 5. Pete’s new synth. And 6. I have always really *felt,* if you will, “Getting In Tune”’s verses. That’s just a pretty noise and a gettable feeling I’ve felt while “banging on my old piano,” singing a note because it fits in well with the chord I’m playing. #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylalbum #whosnext #babaoriley #behindblueeyes #wontgetfooledagain #petetownshend #rogerdaltrey #johnentwistle #keithmoon #townshend #daltrey #vinyladdict #vinylcommunity #hoppervinyl #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxyfW1BATjO/?igshid=1qk6efbj7fj1k

MUSICIANS I ENJOY FOLLOWING ON SOCIAL MEDIA #6. Besides leading @thedecemberists, @dullandwitlessboy (Colin Meloy) is married to @carsonellis who is an artist/illustrator/designer/mom/goat-haver and they’re both good at Instagram and maybe other forms of social media but this is where I see them. Carson gives the clearer picture of life at their house, and did the lettering and illustrations for this excellent #vinylcoverart. Got this album when I saw an affordable copy (looks like it got dropped on its edges slightly) because every time I hear the song “Make You Better” on a radio or restaurant PA I’m struck at how *good* it sounds—the production and engineering as well as the songwriting and arranging: when Colin and the backing vocalist really lay into the chorus it’s just gaw-jus, gaw-jus. And often on the album strings come in like musical servo motors all whirring and thrumming with purpose, really beautiful and full. Of course the lyrics are whimsical and tragic and full of choices like saying “or perhaps the obverse” when anyone else would say “reverse.” And there’s this unnecessary fourth side that Carson just decorated—an excellent use of blank #vinyl. #decemberists #thedecemberists #colinmeloy #carsonellis #vinylcollection #vinyladdict #vinylrecords #vinylcover #vinylcoverdesign #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwQnjYhnzIE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=nuhe03kq5fam

MUSICIANS I ENJOY FOLLOWING ON SOCIAL MEDIA #3. Whether you ever heard @parksvandyke solo or not, you’ve definitely heard his string arrangements on pop and rock records and some of the songs he cowrote, especially with #brianwilson. And now you can see what’s on his mind (and it’s all kinds of stuff: playful but pissed off political remarks, sixties reminiscences, conceptual stuff, tributes to people he either knew or respected, his attempts to get a photo taken when it was so rainy in LA...). This album, hm, hm hm hm. It was my first listen tonight—first impression, it’s kind of like if Esquivel, Captain Beefheart and Jimmy Webb made a Broadway soundtrack for a non-existent show? And it’s as if you can picture Neil Young masterminding “Broken Arrow” in the studio next door with Buffalo Springfield, and the whole building just taking a chance on unexpected decisions at every turn. I suppose I think it’s a cousin of Revolution No.9 including that little McCartney fragment of a catchy song at the beginning; though less dark and more orchestral and the album kicks off with an odd bluegrass thing that turns into a Randy Newman cover where Randy arranged the strings to sound like a Randy Newman record. I’m not sure I followed all the trains of thought but they seemed, uh, full of portent but playful, too, frequently. Anyway. Now Mr. Parks is an interesting older guy with an Instagram account and a lot of rich personal history. #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinyladdict #vandykeparks #songcycle #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv220LWHThL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=a7xhjpw0g1ia

Aw, I saw that Ranking Roger died while we were in Florida. Don’t usually try to time my choices to current events (it’s too hard to be prompt and then my select-an-album project starts to get away from me) but any excuse to listen to this, one of my favorite favorites from college, from the fun take on mental illness / vanity that kicks it off with “Mirror in the Bathroom” then, all of but I especially love “Twist and Crawl” “Noise in This World” “Best Friend” and of course “Stand Down Margaret” (which puts one in mind of #theresamay just now) and just, oh, I don’t know, multiple-listen-demanding covers of “Tears of a Clown” and “Can’t Get Used To Losing You”... noticed Roger singing goodbye at the end of “Jackpot” and thought it was kinda poignant.sn, every song on here is great. And “go listen to some ska” is like a prescribed medical treatment after driving 1500 miles over two days or whatever it was we just did returning from spring break. #riprankingroger #theenglishbeat #thebeat #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinyladdict #standdownmargaret #mirrorinthebathroom #twistandcrawl #rankingroger #ijustcantstopit #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvstQEnHSiO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=14ew80v4v0hri

ENDEARINGLY LITERATE SONGWRITERS WHOSE “FUN” BAND NAME *MAY* HAVE MUTED THEIR POPULARITY, no. 4. Who knows, that’s a great name for a band where the leader writes songs based on #MartinAmis novels and stuff. There’s no way to overstate how important some of these songs are to our family, when I was putting them on mix CDs for the minivan when the kids were young, “Plea from a Cat Named Virtute” especially. It’s on a mix of songs that tell stories (alongside Johnny B. Goode and Space Oddity and Ode to Billy Joe, et al) and so often, so often I’ve been driving around five weeping people, each of us trying to hide from the others that ONCE AGAIN we were unable to make it through the bridge without stifling sobs. I dare all of you reading now, listen to the cat sing, “I know you’re strong” without a lump in your throat. Every time. Anyway. My wife went on errands so I turned this up really loud and the guitars are just so big and the lyrics so elusive and sad and catchy. This is one of my favorite albums I forget when discussing my favorite albums. But it will always be there in the kids’ memories of Dad making them listen to CDs in the minivan. @shushmuckle and @uriahaf20 , you went up to Chicago to see #johnksamson and #theweakerthans, didn’t you, when they toured this album? #weakerthans #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylrecord #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl #pleafromacatnamedvirtute #iknowyourestrong #psalmfortheelkslodgelastcall #beforewesaygoodnight #timesarrow #ihatewinnipeg #anewnameforeverything #reconstructionsite (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuPgU4PnZY7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1jwdc9bbfbjmk

ENDEARINGLY LITERATE SONGWRITERS WHOSE “FUN” BAND NAME *MAY* HAVE MUTED THEIR POPULARITY, no. 3. Okay, after enjoying the set from @thenudeparty this afternoon at the @wttsfm stage in our building I was in the mood for The Velvet Underground, and recently had picked this up for (relatively) cheap (for a VU #vinylrecord), and “the Velvets” definitely seem like their success MIGHT have been muted by naming themselves for a novel about sado-masochism or whatever it was. So here we are. This sounds like a friend of theirs brought a cassette recorder to a random live show and that’s what it is—if I’d shelled out $7 for it in the 70s I might have been disappointed when I put it on my fancy stereo set-up. Tonight it was just fine as an #ellipticalsoundtrack and it reminded me a whole bunch of cassettes @johnsheets made of our @mikeshouse shows in the 80s and 90s, complete with rambling between-song patter and tuning, then some songs launched without a perfect tuning achieved. It’s nice to hear some of the Nico songs in this loose rock band version with Lou singing, because I’m not really a fan of Nico. I prefer this version of Femme Fatale and I’ll Be Your Mirror even if it’s lo-fi. Anyway. Not a bad substitute for not seeing #thenudeparty tonight at the @thebluebirdbar in Bloomington, maybe. #vinyl #vinylcollection #velvetunderground #loureed #thevelvetunderground #liveatmaxskansascity #maxskansascity #sweetjane #beginningtoseethelight #femmefatale #imwaitingfortheman #lofi #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuF646VH9LL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7abd53a8lp98

Kind of got a Portland thing going. Started with Broken Bells and Elliott Smith and then, over New Year’s break we watched an episode of #portlandia and I recognized @dullandwitlessboy as a band guy checking into a self-consciously hip hotel, and IMDb ‘d it, and saw the other guy in the band was Shin’s/Broken Bells’ James Mercer.... anyway, I was going to skip working out to a record tonight but Marj made cookies and I couldn’t keep my stupid hands off ‘em, so I had to do some elliptical and I wanted something I knew I would like. I bought this awhile back when I was frustrated I couldn’t find any reasonably priced @rem #lps I didn’t already have, but this was relatively cheap and Peter Buck is all over it and I knew the radio hit, “Down By the Water” always makes me want to sing “Fire!” over the harmonica solos like it was a rewrite of “The One I Love”... but I didn’t know Gillian Welch is singing backup throughout. Generally it’s exactly what I expected in a good way. (“Calamity Song” sounds a lot like “Catapult” crossbred with a sped-up “Talk About the Passion”.... to me....) #vinyl #vinylcollection #decemberists #peterbuck #gillianwelch #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl #portlandmusic cc: @freeformpdx (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsUm2LlH9Lx/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=bqqdc5o5jz1x

CASH-GRAB QUICKIE GREATEST HITS, #3. Only curmudgeons wouldn’t like this imitation of what the sixties sounded like. Lots of gems and with the studio cats backing them up the Prefab Four sound great. Except on this cheapie off-brand album the mixes and mastering are all over the place. So some songs (Clarksville, Believer, Pleasant Valley) sound clear and great and some (a lot of the ones I don’t really know plus Daydream Believer) are sort of distorted. Look at all the famous songwriters who chipped in, though. And they’re ripping off *everybody* from The Who and Mamas and Papas to Kinks to Lovin’ Spoonful to obviously Beatles and mid-60s Stones. Everybody’s a source! It’s not copy-catting, it’s seeking multiple sources of inspiration! Then creating, uh, tributes! And I like almost all of it. #vinyl #vinylcollection #monkees #heyheywerethemonkees #lasttraintoclarksville #pleasantvalleysunday #imabeliever #imnotyoursteppingstone #daydreambeliever #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq9HTWPH2fO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1rmgzjhv6ghiq

CASH-GRAB QUICKIE GREATEST HITS, #2. Too harsh, too glib, that subsection title—this is a terrific album. But it’s barely a half hour long, including the flip-over. Surely even early Jones had more hits or hitlike songs than just these, at this point? Plus I found it in a cut-out bin, back in the day. But it sounds very “high fidelity,” unlike some quickie cash-grab greatest hits (like the one after this). And not too many songs are more fun than “White Lightnin’” (by Sheb Wooley, of “Wilhelm scream” and “Flying Purple People Eater” fame) or “The Race Is On.” And “She Thinks I Still Care” is an air-tight idea executed perfectly. #vinyl #vinylcollection #treadmillsoundtrack #ellipticalsoundtrack #georgejones #theraceison #whitelightning #shethinksistillcare #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq9FwwunnVR/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=sgezxywfm1s

ALBUM OF THE MOVIE, #1. More British Invasion. Took a girl to see this rockumentary in college at @iubloomington @iuunionboardfilms with two or three of her friends and we had so much fun I married her. Not right away. I might be oversimplifying the connection. This here record package is a generous souvenir, with multiple pieces and so much music I couldn’t listen to it all at once today. A thought I had as I was finishing it tonight, listening to the “Tommy” selections, is Townshend is like Taco Bell: his songwriting and guitar work have like 7 to 9 ingredients but he just keeps recombining them in interesting ways. And Moon and Entwhistle never stop doing things. It’s not how rock bands are supposed to work. They shouldn’t be doing so many things. But the more they do the more fun it is. Oh! And Tommy Smothers, who I share my birthday with, starts the whole thing out. “Tommy, can you introduce me...” #vinyl #vinylcollection #thewho #wontgetfooledagain #magicbus #icanseeformiles #happyjack #aquickonewhilehesaway #youareforgiven #pinballwizard #tommycanyouhearme #substitute #mygeneration #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtKmANInGYI/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xogbt1ib2ot3

CHRISTMAS, WHAT ELSE? #2. Two things I enjoy, responsible interpretations of carols and seasonal songs, and Mister Fahey. When we put this on, my son Ted said, “Oh, Pachelbel’s Canon,” and I superciliously said, “No, it’s Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.” But in the car today as I ran Christmas errands with the Christmas radio station on, they played that one boy’s choir rendition you may have heard where they put Christmas words to the canon, and by gosh, I started singing “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” right over the top just fine. I came home and apologized to Ted for correcting him incorrectly. #vinyl #vinylcollection #christmasmusic #christmasradiostation #johnfahey #johnfaheychristmas #fahey #pachelbelcanon #pachelbel #tacobell #tacobellscanon #jollyoldsaintnicholas #samechords #drivingaround #christmaserrands #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrwU9Zin7xx/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=l6gvgd3gynji

#TONICINDY this year our band, Black Plastic Glasses, with the help of @dysfunktionbrass, will do two #eltonjohn songs, neither of which are on this. Got home from band practice and wanted to listen to more #elton but was tired of the songs we just ran through a half dozen or so times each. Gotta say, when he and #bernietaupin connect they’re amazingly great (“Rocket Man”) or at least pretty dang great (“Honky Cat,” “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters”); when they miss, they miss huge, oy. Anyway. It always sounds good. #vinyl #vinylcollection #sireltonjohn #honkycat #rocketman #monalisasandmadhatters #ellipticalsoundtrack #treadmillsoundtrack #nowspinning #nowspinningonvinyl cc: @tonicindy (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp02g3An1kx/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=194kgitftsa5v
