Most likely this change was due to censorship, however all of us agree that we think the change was for the better. S1E04: Teacher’s Pet

Xander’s obvious dream sequence becomes apparent after he saves Buffy from a vamp, performs a guitar solo, and has every intention of kissing her like she’s never been kissed before. Cueing the catalyst for this episode; male infatuation with the opposite sex.

This infatuation will be the downfall of a few as the new substitute teacher Ms. French takes over from the now headless former science teacher Mr. Gregory. When Xander goes to Ms. French’s house for an “assignment” and doesn’t return the following day, Buffy, Willow, and Giles must save idiotic Xander from his testosterone…… and a giant praying mantis.

While this is a pretty cut and dry episode, the best parts are the interactions between Buffy and Angel, the relationship takes itty bitty steps, but it is fascinating to watch and fills us with potential happiness.

***Spoilers*** ‘Enemies’ is a brilliant episode that not only adds to the complexity of the season and its characters, but it is also incredibly fun to watch. The reveal that Angel is not actually Angelus, is one of the top 5 “gotcha!” moments of the series for me. Writer Doug Petrie seamlessly blends the themes of choice and responsibility with the motif of shadow selves, all while progressing the plot, Buffy and Faith’s conflict, and the Bangel storyline. On top of this, the decision to have Angel pretend to be Angelus allows the show to again raise the question of whether Angel is responsible or culpable for Angelus’ actions—a topic that becomes the foundation for his spin off show. David Boreanaz does a fantastic job of subtly creating a distinction between the two characters, yet also making it believable enough for a first-time viewer to think that Angelus is back. Angel’s subdued and almost passive approach in confronting the Mayor, his willingness to let Faith take the lead in interrogation, and the open hand when he hits Buffy, all contrast Angelus’ more overtly arrogant and theatrical nature. Like Willow in ‘Doppelgangland,’ Angel tries to separate his actions from those of Angelus, however the writers strongly hint that both sides might be more connected than we think. Specifically, once Angel and Faith bring Buffy to the mansion, Angel taunts Buffy by reciting almost word for word, her plea in ‘Innocence’ that there must be some part of him that remembers who he is. Since Buffy is in on the ruse, it makes no sense for Angel to bring up something so personal when Faith wouldn’t even know the difference—unless it was actually Angelus coming to the surface. In the end, ‘Enemies’ demonstrates through Angel that regardless of Faith’s circumstances or desires, there is always the choice to do what’s right. She has no excuse. Do you think Angelus was brought to the surface? Or is it that Angel tapped into what he knew of him?
