BLOOD LUST // accepting // @thatslayer sent — 15. our muses looking to the sky as it rains blood

Elektra thinks she’s done the right thing, driving her sai — a special demon hunting pair now, tipped with wood, because maybe she’s getting with the program— through the monster partway through his emphatic monologue. He keels and crumples just like she’s seen a thousand times. And she turns to Faith with a rather cavalier surety about it, some fresh blood dripping from her blades undisturbed, probably about to ask where to next.

When a heavy raindrop hits her dead between the eyes. Even before she looks up, an instinct recognizes it as thicker. Not water. Warm. There’s a smell to it. She looks up at the rickety ceiling of this condemned building to a dark stain centered on them, steadily expanding. More drops begin to fall, faster, a clear bright red. Elektra gets to Faith’s side just as one catches her lip and reminds her to shut her mouth. The blood fills to the very corners, and begins to paint the windows outside in long crimson streaks.

“Tell me this sort of thing happens...” she asks, rather softly, still staring at the problem. “Right?”

S4. Ep15. This Year's Girl

Season 4 truly is a seesaw when it comes to episode quality. After a string of incredibly mediocre episodes, we have arrived at the beginning of one of the best crossover events of both series. Usually the first part of a two-parter is mostly set up and less action, making it more difficult to analyze, and maybe it’s because we’re so starved for better episodes and deeper content, but “This Year’s Girl” was riveting from beginning to end.

Almost entitled “Rise and Shine” or “Rise and Shatter,” depending on IMDB or the Buffyverse Wiki, “This Year’s Girl” is a reference to the 1978 Elvis Costello song, written as an answer song to the Rolling Stones’ 1966 track, “Stupid Girl.” Costello felt the original song was misogynistic and painted women in a less than flattering light, so he wrote “This Year’s Girl” to be about the way men project their fantasies and expectations onto women.

Given the nature of Faith’s relationship with the Mayor and with the past men in her life, it’s possible that Petrie is hinting that Faith’s hardened and overly sexualized persona is a front, hiding the scared and vulnerable girl behind it. She is being who she thinks society wants her to be in an effort to survive.

In their paper discussing existentialism in Buffy, Richardson and Rabb argue that this episode and the next explore the impact of Sartre's Look - the outside view that causes a person to redefine themselves from the perspective of the Other. They interpret Faith's defection to the Mayor and relentless dreams of Buffy stalking her as Faith's attempt to escape Buffy’s judgmental Look and the accompanying guilt it brings. When the two Slayers meet again, Faith immediately denies her possession by Buffy, saying, "You’re not me." However, she is beginning to acknowledge the guilt brought on by Buffy's Look; when Buffy expresses concern for the innocent people surrounding them, Faith claims there is no such thing as an innocent person. Richardson and Rabb point out that, therefore, Faith herself "must realize at some level she is not innocent, but is in fact guilty of horrendous crimes."
