Star Wars Adventures Books Index
Reminders of what happened in them, links to quote posts, etc. This was a series of books, game books, and tie-in magazines published by Scholastic in 1999 and the early 2000s. The game element involves dice rolling and choose your own adventure type stuff - I dunno, I skimmed through the accompanying game books but it was just kind of baffling to an impatient reader like myself.
The actual books themselves are pretty interesting, though some of the later ones aren’t an awful lot different from the movie novelisations.
★ Search for the Lost Jedi - Ryder Windham, September 1999. Qui-Gon convinces Obi-Wan to disobey the Council and accompany him on a mission to rescue Adi Gallia. Obi-Wan is 25 and says: “B-B-But, Master…” Obi-Wan stammered. “Mace Windu said I should remain here.” Beautiful.
★ The Bartokk Assassins - Ryder Windham, October 1999. The mission continues... Sidious puts Darth Maul on the case. This book claims ‘because of Obi-Wan’s upbringing among the Jedi, fear was not something he easily understood’ which I think we can take with a giant tablespoon of salt.
★ The Fury of Darth Maul - Ryder Windham, November 1999. Obi-Wan whines about the lack of laundry facilities aboard their ship. Darth Maul is just busy being himself.
★ Jedi Emergency - Ryder Windham, December 1999. (TBA)
★ The Ghostling Children - Dave Wolverton, January 2000. There is so much interesting background info in this book! Some children are kidnapped to be sold as slaves and end up on Tatooine; Anakin and his friends help save them. Pala, a 16-year-old Twi’lek is due to be sold off from Madame Vinsett’s Charm School to an older man, so figures she has little left to lose. Jira, a juice seller in the market, offers to help them out. Anakin buys a holocron from a Jawa, and there’s also a very touching conversation between Anakin and Shmi about doing the right thing, even when it hurts.
★ The Hunt for Anakin Skywalker - Dave Wolverton, February 2000. Gardulla knows the ghostling children are missing, and we learn that she had the last thief who dared tamper with her slaves turned into a throw rug. A flake of skin was left at the scene that will identify them and Anakin needs to create a signal jammer for Pala’s slave chip, so she can go into hiding until they get her off world.
★ Capture Arawynne - Dave Wolverton, March 2000. The slavers are still searching for Princess Arawynne and the other ghostling children. Jabba makes Dorn an offer - if he hands over his accomplices he can go free. Dorn refuses and all of them, bar Anakin, end up in custody waiting to be executed at a big public execution that the Hutts are selling tickets for - though slaves get to go free so they can see what happens to their disobedient brethren.
★ Trouble on Tatooine - Dave Wolverton, April 2000. Anakin leads the ghostling children and his friends to freedom, and they find some treasure which pays the pirates to take the ghostlings, Pala and Dorn off world. Kitster recognises one of the pirates as his own dad but doesn’t reveal it; they can only take that number of people, and he knows his father will save him over Dorn who will undoubtedly be executed. (According to the wiki Kitster later helps Leia see his father wasn’t all bad... I would pay to see Kitster curse Vader out for being the selfish brat he is!) Anakin uses the leftover credits on his podracer, dreaming of freedom.
★ Danger on Naboo - A. L. Singer, September 2000. The events of TPM begin, Obi-Wan is understandably annoyed by Jar Jar.
★ Podrace to Freedom - A. L. Singer, October 2000. We get Anakin’s thought processes on meeting Padme and Obi-Wan for the first time... Unimpressed kind of covers it!
★ The Final Battle - A. L. Singer, November 2000. Conclusion of TPM ending with Anakin asking, “What will happen to me now?” Obi-Wan ‘reassures’ “I am your Master now” like something out of a newly freed slave’s nightmares...
In 2002 Scholastic started a new series of game books with a few actual new books, then reprints of The Ghostling Children onwards.
★ Hunt the Sun Runner - Ryder Windham, October 2002. (TBA)
★ The Cavern of Screaming Skulls - Ryder Windham, November 2002. (TBA)
★ The Hostage Princess - Ryder Windham, December 2002. (TBA)
★ Jango Fett vs. The Razor Eaters - Ryder Windham, January 2003. (TBA)
★ The Shape-Shifter Attacks - Ryder Windham, February 2003. (TBA)
★ The Warlords of Balmorra - Ryder Windham, March 2003. (TBA)

alright i have to admit, this one is a toughie. so lets just dive into it
despite literally everything about dave as a person seeming like he'd be completely incompatible with someone like amanda, through dumb luck, bad jokes, and sheer force of will hes accidentally created one of the closest friendships hes ever had, and that alone is enough to wig him out of thinking about their relationship too much. but when he does, it usually breaks down like this:
talking to strange people on the internet seems to break good once in a while, since he definitely started talking to her out of boredom and curiosity. who is this y2k-era edgelord? why is she on tumblr? what's the deal with the pig thing? it was curiosity at first, a form of escapism from his increasingly upsetting life, that spiraled into something way more. turns out the funny edgelord is actually packing a huge tragic backstory, a good sense of humor, and an existentially horrifying circumstance with an elder god. that was enough to turn this from joke to real. and then when it got real, it got real in a hurry
so, dave is an incredibly emotionally repressed person, in the same way any person that thinks "vulnerability = getting your ass kicked" tends to be. there are people thatve known dave for years that know less about him than amanda has learned in a few months, and honestly? its entirely because shes 10x worse at emotions than he is. the easiest way for him to bond with someone is through banter and, by extension, him fucking with them, and seeing someone seem so avoidant of getting vulnerable like that meant that he felt pretty comfortable doing it for the bit. plus, there was something extremely relatable about it, since he also had to be "socialized" like this once he moved out of the system. sure, he isnt the best at taking his own advice, but he's heard all of this stuff from his friends. about trusting people, and understanding that not everyone wants to hurt you, and knowing how to put yourself out there. all of that stuff
the fact that it was mixed with jokes made it way easier for both of them, he figures, since thats really all he knows how to do when it comes to socializing anyway. the fact that she was receptive to him fucking with her in the first place was surprising, when she started doing it back it was downright delightful, and somehow it was much easier to transition from jokey banter to serious conversations. felt decently natural, honestly, and thats what weirds himself out the most about it. no matter how weird and different their circumstances are, theyre on a very similar wavelength with discussing and contextualizing their problems, which is to say that they either avoid it until it kills them or turns it into some dumb overwrought joke. and the tendency for them to call each other out on doing both of those things turned it into a system of mutual responsibility, instead of like, living with a therapist that psychoanalyzes you every morning.
eventually though, the whole amanda thing started getting him in his feelings in a way he didnt really know how to handle. heres someone with a way rougher life than him, screwed over by people over and over again, and he feels this deep existential dread realizing that an incredibly fun and pleasant person can be used like that! and hurt like that! and killed like that! honestly he can't even wrap his head around the idea of her being party to murder because he can't see her as anything but a horrifying sample case of "the universe is a shitty place that screws people over with forces outside their control," and he really doesn't know how to handle it. the addiction/self-destructive tendency thing really hits him in the sister issues, too, and he cant really figure out what to do to help, yet he still gets an overwhelming need to help. so he keeps up with the jokes and the bullshit and asks her to hang and tries to introduce her to shit that makes him happy in the hopes that itll make her happy
and it isnt entirely pity, and it isnt entirely charity, because he really does enjoy her company. shes like, his current closest friend (not counting rose), and all of the "helping" at some point became mutually beneficial in the sense that he has a friend that he can hang around with and enjoy life with through a new pair of eyes. one of his favorite things to do is to show her dumb shit that happened after she died, because she'll either hate it or love it, and both are great for him. its that sort of stuff that makes him feel, even if he'd never say it to her face, that hes actually extremely grateful that she got nabbed by an evil spider god. he doesnt know what he'd be doing without her and he has to imagine that her life is similarly improved by her cosmic murder jail.
so its a lot of good vibes, mixed with a decent amount of existential dread from her circumstances. the idea of an unstoppable deity being whats stopping your friend from just living in your apartment is one of those things that makes him want to tear his hair out, but it does feel pretty good to know that someone out there understands his current war against the cosmos and destiny and gods or whatever. and honestly? hes at the point where he feels like she gets him so much that hes worried about being too overwhelming. asking to hang out too much or getting too affectionate which are issues he almost never gets. so he gives her space and tries not to scare her off and instead does dumb shit like giving her house keys and becoming sworn brothers or whatever. hed pretty much die or kill for her and the fact that she refuses to ask him for anything makes him feel like a huge loser for even thinking that.

400 Words on THE HANGING TREE [1959] ★★★★
Tumblr media
The settlers ride into the skeleton of the mining camp, cresting a hill overlooking the river valley infested with prospectors like ticks on a dog. At the top of the hill a single bony tree stands sentinel. “Every new mining camp’s got to have its hanging tree,” the driver cheerfully tells his companion as they ride by, “makes folks feel respectable.” It’s a brief moment, almost a throwaway aside. Yet this juxtaposition of the reality of mob violence with the fantasy of civility brilliantly encapsulates the worldview and philosophy of Delmer Daves’ The Hanging Tree. A viciously cynical Western, it interrogates the false front of respectability mankind drapes over its meanest impulses and finds them laughably pathetic. The fifties had already seen Daves direct some of the darkest Westerns produced by the Hollywood studio system this side of Anthony Mann, beginning with the revisionist tragedy Broken Arrow (1950), the Shakespearean melodrama Jubal (1956), and the subtly anti-capitalist Cowboy (1958). But The Hanging Tree outdoes them all in terms of bare-teethed anger. The film follows Joseph Frail (Gary Cooper), a wandering doctor and gunslinger who sets up shop in Skull Camp, Montana. On his first day there he rescues a gold sluice thief named Rune (Ben Piazza) after he’s shot and almost lynched by mine guards. Frail forces the recalcitrant Rune to work as his manservant to pay off his medical debt under the threat of turning him in to the murderous authorities. Soon the two take in Elizabeth Mahler (Maria Schell), a Swiss immigrant hurt and blinded during a stagecoach robbery that killed her family while en route to Skull Camp. Elizabeth too falls under the influence of Frail, first falling in love with him, then being unwittingly bankrolled by him when she, Rune, and local prospector Frenchy (Karl Malden) stake their own gold claim. The pattern here is obvious: though Frail might have legitimately good intentions—his selflessness in caring for impoverished locals who can’t pay him is proof enough of that—he’s incapable of maintaining relationships where he doesn’t have the upper hand. The other Skull Camp villagers are hardly any better, with the womenfolk being vicious gossipers and the men violent maniacs egged on by the clearly insane faith healer Dr. Grubb (George C. Scott). The microcosm Daves creates here would make Billy Wilder pause, and the final five minutes are a masterstroke of nihilism.
