So a bitch got the Dragon Age World of Thedas book and for once the bitch isn’t me (it’s my partner)
And there are RECIPES, so you know what we did

This is the Dalish Deep Forest Comfort, but we ah… we have enhanced it to a wild degree
So Imma preface this with “we have been making jokes about Lavellan’s parents being godawful cooks so he eats everything raw” for months long before we got this book
(There’s a ficlet about it for our Four Heralds AU that may or may not be out already and if not will be soon)
But then we saw this recipe, and… guys? Guys? Let the Dalish have nice fucking things
This here is a spaghetti squash casserole, and one we made with one spaghetti squash instead of three
In the original recipe, the ingredients for this casserole are:
- 3 spaghetti squash
- 2 tbsp butter
- 4 cloves garlic FOR THREE ENTIRE SQUASH
- 2 cups mushrooms
- 2 cups spinach (they lie and pretend elfroot is spinach but elfroot is weed so this might explain the quantities)
- 2 cups diced tomatoes
- teeny bit dried red pepper
- pinch of parsley
- 3/4 cup of feta
- wildflower garnish
Let me tell you right fucking now I don’t think they know how much you get out of a spaghetti squash because we put 2 cups tomato and spinach each in this baby with our 1 spaghetti squash and it’s perfect
So obviously we diverted right at the start, cooked the spaghetti squash with salt, pepper, roasted garlic and red pepper all rubbed in
And to the rest we added onions and a strawberry basil summer sausage that fuuuuuuuuuucks, herbs de Provence, more salt, pepper, olive oil, roasted garlic and red pepper, cracked garlic, allllll the sausage juices, and tossed her up
Crusted the top with aged white cheddar, panko, and more feta, back into the oven, and guys?

I thought I hated spaghetti squash but I just hate it when my sister cooks it cuz she cooks like the Dalish apparently, with just… no seasoning
Gonna bastardize many more recipes in future but this one is a winner once you beef it up a lil bit

We're backish!
This blog hasn't been updated since 2017, and I personally have never interacted with it, despite asking my friend for mod rights when I was playing dragon age.
But that's about to change! I have semi-recently gotten super into cooking with my partner, and as such I'd love to get involved in this blog again, especially since I'm getting back into themed blog content.
And here we go! I'll start with an introduction and a recipe I enjoy.
On here I go by Alioth, which is the name of my main Dragonage OC. I might share some stuff about his story here and my art of him occasionally as well, but this is mostly going to be a blog that shares recipes I enjoy. I've been playing dragon age for a long time and I've always felt a kinship with the Dalish, who simply resonated greatly with the experiences I had growing up different, especially in the context of my life where I was raised Christian, by a devout stepfather, and I am now (and have been for a very long time) very very pagan.
I enjoy being a ray of sunshine in people's lives, and while I'm far from perfect, I strive to be better every day so I can always do that for the people in my life. My favorite color is yellow, and I prefer to bake than cook, but I enjoy both. If you remember me from the old days of Tumblr, that's ok, but I'm a very different adult than I was sub-21. I hope you're willing to learn the new me. I'm 26, turning 27 in November, and my favorite animals are hyenas and cheetahs. Dingos get an honorable mention though.
I'm living in a Celtic region of the world these days and as such my inspiration for today's recipe is one I think is important to know (everyone who wants to cook should make bread) and also is a fun way to do so. I noticed a lot of Celtic imagery in the Dalish storylines in the game, so I have taken that into account (though not all my recipes will have specific inspirations, some just FEEL Dalish to me, and I will add those as well or I will quickly run out of recipes to put on this blog....) this recipe isn't mine, and I will therefore be linking the blog post I found it on here in this post, but for brevity's sake and just in case the blog is ever removed, I will also post the recipe as well as a picture of it here. In the future, I plan to add my own pictures, and I will always tag those pictures as my own. I will also add my own recipes, which I will also tag accordingly.
Today's recipe is Celtic Knot bread, which is fun and tasty. I will post it in another post so you guys don't have to dig through an introduction to find it!

"Dragon's Breath" is offered as an alternative name for this drink as it is served while lit on fire in the glass and burns on the way down.
The Golden Nug - Made with a base of effervescent white Seleney wine, sweetened with a dash of West Hill brandy and a splash of pomegranate juice. Muddled with raspberries and garnished with a sprig of Royal Elfroot. The goal is to imitate the soft pink colour of a nug.

Emerald Soup
This simple, hearty soup is one of the oldest known elven recipes, dating back to the times of Halamshiral. It’s known for its beautiful green color from the borage leaves used to make it. Both Dalish and city elves make this soup, though variations exist based on what ingredients can be bought, foraged or (if necessary) stolen.
Ingredients
Four pounds of elfroot and borage leaves
Eight wild onions
Two small bunches of parsley
Two cups of white wine
Two cups of chicken or vegetable broth
Two potatoes, peeled and cubed
Salt and pepper to taste
Juice of two lemons
Directions
Set a saucepan of salted water on a medium-high heat. Cook potatoes for fifteen to twenty minutes, until tender. Mash or grind in a mortar and pestle and set aside. Fill a large bowl with melted snow or iced water.
Boil the wild onions in the saucepan for two to three minutes, then plunge into the ice water. Repeat with the parsley, boiling for two minutes, then submerging, and the leafy greens, boiling for one minute and submerging. Once the vegetables are cool, remove and place in a colander to drain.
Set a separate broth pot on the heat and bring the stock and wine to a simmer. Add the potatoes and crumble into the liquid. Simmer for fifteen minutes, until potato has dissolved.
Meanwhile, chop the greens and add to the soup when the potato is dissolved. Stir and bring back to a simmer. Add salt and pepper to taste. The soup should be emerald green in color and not too thin; if needed you can thicken with a pinch of flour.
Remove from heat and strain the soup through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer. Return to the pot and season further if needed.
Serve with a dash of lemon juice stirred in. Garnish with crumbled halla cheese.
Notes
Other leafy greens such as chard, parsley, spinach or dandelions may be used if borage is not available, or otherwise to taste.
Scallions may be used in place of wild onions.

The sap is high in vitamins a and c and has been used to fend off scurvy in the past. The sap can be drunk as a tea in the spring.

She has the summer caponata, the pasta frittata, rice salad, melon and prosciutto, arancini, panzanella, samosas and jalebi, sliced peaches and apricots and a watermelon in a net bag.
Nobody will starve on her watch. Nobody.
Oh and of course also some loose sandwiches, in case all that is too little and someone is still hungry. Or for a mid-afternoon snack.
Yes she did manage to put all that in quantity enough for the whole inner circle + advisors in that bag. It's enchanted.
If they're lucky she just supervised the cook about quantities and didn't help in the cooking.
Recipes are half from Nonna Pavus' recipe book (the most prizes relic of the family, the Circulum Infinitum comes second) and half from Clan Lavellan. (Panzanella is discussed: Dorian says it's a Tevinter recipe, Aisling that it's Dalish, nobody listens to Solas saying that he "saw in the Fade" that it's from Arlathan).
Will anyone be able to actually enter the water, considering that for Dorian at least two hours must pass after you eat? Debatable.

Have you ever thought about Hawke being of elf heritage? I usually imagine Malcolm being mixed and teaching his kids not to be too "elvish" in public cuz the last thing they need is bigots paying attention to a family with 2-3 apostates.
And just... Hawke and their siblings grieving all the stuff they missed out from their elvhen heritage. Whispered Dalish words when no one is listening, sneaky prayers to their gods, and the small hints pierced together from whatever Malcolm could remember of his elf parent before he got taken by the circle.
Hawke listening intently to Merrill because that is their culture, too! Desperately wanting to tell the truth to Merrill's clan, but being so, so, so afraid of being rejected due to the "elvhen blooded" bullshit they grew up hearing.
Merrill being so excited when Hawke tells her. Comparing stories and dialects and asking a million questions because maybe she can figure out what clan Hawke's grandparent was from.
And, I dunno, I just think a lot of da2 quests involving elves and half-elves would have been more compelling if Hawke had more of a personal insight into them.
OH OH OH THIS IS SO GOOD
This got long and I am so sorry for that.
Oh man, what if Malcolm had been Dalish though? Mixed or not, what if he was born into a Dalish clan and became one of those "abandoned" mage children? A tiny, half-starved elven child found in the woods and brought back to the alienage, to be raised by whoever was willing and able to have another mouth to feed. When he was told of his heritage, of how he was found, he was also told the stories of Dalish clans abandoning children in the forest to die, for being half-human or being a mage or whatever else. Malcolm grew up getting pitying looks from the adults and knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that his clan did not want him.
That wasn't true. He wasn't abandoned, he was just lost and his clan never stopped searching for him. I wonder if that would've been a comfort to him or just another source of pain and grief, for the life he could've lived and the family who had to mourn him.
The other elves in his alienage didn't know what clan he was from, hadn't heard of any passing by the area, but there were some people there who had left their own clans or were the children of Dalish elves themselves and they taught him what they knew. Pieces of their language, prayers to their gods, history hidden in folk stories, a ton of varied recipes, etc. One of the oldest elves in the alienage, a tiny woman who was nearly blind with her fingers all twisted and knobbly from arthritis, even taught him the weaving and embroidery that she had grown up doing in her own clan. Each lesson was done in private, away from the eyes of the human guards, and with the other children in the alienage who deserved access to that heritage even if they weren't born to Dalish parents.
And he passed those traditions onto his own children. He taught each of his children the things he remembered from his childhood, before he was taken to the Circle, and the things he had picked up later, as he met other elves. Leandra worried over it, over teaching their children the "savagery" of the Dalish and even over teaching Carver (and a male Hawke) "womanly" skills like weaving and cooking, but she kept her complaints and concerns to herself except for hushed arguments when the children were in bed.
Maybe Malcolm did remember some things from his childhood; the colors of the tapestries and blankets used to keep their aravel warm, snippets of the lullabies he fell asleep to, the spicy-sweetness of the nuts he was given to snack on during long walks. He can even remember how his mother smelled, the herbal tang of the elfroot oil she used to comb through her hair, but he couldn't remember her face. He kept those early memories a secret his whole life, something just for him, but he shares them with his children.
And long after he's gone, Hawke and their siblings are viciously, furiously protective of their heritage, even when they don't always feel like they really deserve to claim it. They despise the "elf-blooded" bullshit, but since they can all pass as human (though they've been clocked by quite a few Dalish merchants), they feel like it would be hypocritical of them to point out the ridiculousness of elf blood never appearing in mixed children. They fight like hell for the elves they encounter though, arguing against the slander aimed at Dalish clans and picking fights with guards and random bullies who think the local elves are easy targets. They may not look traditionally elven, they can't even tell anyone that they're elves at all, but they can take advantage of that and protect the people who aren't able to hide.
But even with all that, they were all still wary of Dalish clans. They knew about their dad's childhood, how he was left to die in the forest by a clan who didn't want to deal with another mage, how Bethany and possibly Hawke probably would've suffered the same fate if they'd been raised Dalish. It wasn't until years after Malcolm had died and the surviving siblings meet Merrill that they found out that it wasn't true. She tells them about how those stories are either lies or misunderstandings, that clans aren't going around killing their children, that those "abandoned" children either ran off and got lost or were hidden away during an attack or fight and there was no one left to find them again.
I think that's when Hawke would've told Merrill. And, eventually, they told her about their dad's memories too. They described the little things he remembered from his childhood and maybe, just maybe, the vague patterns of the tapestries and the half-forgotten songs were enough for her to help them find their clan. And for the first time in decades, the clan that lost a child and the children that lost their heritage were able to get some kind of closure.
I wonder if this Hawke would've gone to their clan after things in Kirkwall went to hell. If they would've dragged their sibling and possibly even their lover behind them to join the family they never thought they'd have, or if Hawke would be convinced that it was too dangerous, that they would just bring suffering and death to their clan.

thinking about dinners at the hawke estate.
it starts with just leandra and frances, the two of them eating leaning against the kitchen cabinets because the old dining table was termite-eaten and neither of them could be bothered to go to the market just yet. varric joins next, offering decorating advice with a whiskey in hand while fran shifts around him in the kitchen, magic grabbing utensils and spice jars. carver finally gets leave and appears just in time to help aveline lug in the monster of fran's new dining table, and the siblings bicker as always until leandra lays out an indulgent feast.
there's a rotating cast of guests, never just the hawke women after that first, lonely night - isabela attends to raid fran's liquor cabinet and gossip, merrill waters the plants dying on the windowsill, even anders reluctantly attends because he adores leandra's cooking. fenris takes longer, unused to friendship and family after so long, but after a few months he too gains a dedicated chair at the table (a chair that, ever so slowly, inches closer to fran's).
after leandra's death, the dinners stop. fran avoids the kitchen like it's haunted, their group converging on the hanged man like they had all those years ago instead. orana is the only one who even enters the room for weeks, until varric quietly lets himself in one night to help with the cleaning.
nights in the estate aren't quite the same for months, until finally, slowly, they are. isabela gifts fran an orlesian recipe book, half joking, but smiles as fran offers her a sweet pastry when bela's by next. things with fran and fenris settle into love, and he suddenly has not only a chair but a bottle of his favourite wine on the shelf and a side of her bed and a spot to hang his coat in the entryway. carver, anger and grief and guilt aside, makes more of an effort to duck in for dinner, even if he and fran only sit in companionable silence. merrill brings tea leaves and house plants and old dalish tomes for them to look over at the table. aveline invites donnic for the first time and is given so much shit about it. anders slips in through the latch in the storeroom and pretends as best he can that things are going to be ok, if only for the night.
fran isn't quite as good of a chef as her mother, but it's a close thing. varric sits with his chin in his hand, shares a soul-tired smile with fran across the table, and eats his dinner.

In a medium bowl, mix sugar and water. Sprinkle with yeast and set aside for a few minutes while you gather the remaining ingredients.
Stir in the olive oil, salt, and both flours.
Knead for about 10 minutes, or until you have nice smooth elastic dough. Add a bit more flour or water if needed to get the right consistency.
Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover. Place in a warm place and let rise until doubled in size, about an hour.
Punch down the dough, then let rest for about 10 minutes. Then place it on a lightly floured surface and roll it into a rectangle. Cut into 8 equal pieces. Roll those pieces into “snakes” about a foot long.
Shape each piece into a U. Then cross the ends, wrap the ends back over, and pinch them together. See the pictures above for a visual.
Pinch all of the places where the dough overlaps itself to secure and pinch the ends to give them the Celtic knot shape.
Place on baking sheets that have been greased or lined with baking mats. Cover with towels and allow to rise again for about 45 minutes.
Preheat oven to 400°F.
Bake rolls for about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, place melted butter, garlic salt, and chopped scallion in a small blender bowl and buzz for a couple of seconds.
When rolls are finished baking, brush with butter and serve warm.

Tastes of Thedas Lore:
New Fauna, Food, Ingredients, and General Lore Introduced by the Cookbook
I'm putting this all in one list separate from the master list so it will be easy to find. I am also including all the information we've known from the sample pages for completeness. Source of all this information is from Dragon Age: The Official Cookbook: Taste of Thedas.
I have not included anything that was mentioned in previous media, for a complete list of all the lore mentioned in the cookbook as well as the other sources that mention it, please see this post. I'm putting all this below the cut in case you are trying to avoid spoilers, as well as the post itself is long.
NOTE: I did not include any of the ingredients from the recipes themselves, just the lore blurbs as it has been made clear the recipes not only do not match up, but are also rooted more in reality than Thedas.
Culture
Anderfels has a robust pig farming industry, the climate being well suited for them to grow to a generous size.
Kirkwall is known for their crab cakes.
Nevarran's culinary practices view food to be a feast for the eyes and mouth and thus place heavy importance on plating.
Orzammar holds a competition for the Best Sauce and participants will hatch plots to steal recipes of competitors. Leading recipes to be closely guarded secrets.
Some Orzammar dwarves insist that the proximity to lyrium and darkspawn only improve the flavor of edible deep mushrooms.
Tevinter seems to be the origins of cupcakes. They historically would use them to poison people.
There are custard connoisseurs across Thedas.
General Notes on lore
Isabela has a drinking game based on the number of enemies one has. The game has killed at least one man.
Krem suggested that Bull and the Chargers use the rice they were paid with to make rice pudding.
Krem seems to hold knowledge of all dishes the Chargers eat.
Varric and The Iron Bull love sweets.
Vivienne eats croissants every morning.
Vivienne is known for dressing blancmange with white chocolate curls and whole jasmine flowers, serving the dish on a black plate.
Wyverns, like phoenix, can be deadly if not prepared right.

Suggested Food
As in these might be eaten or not, it is unclear if the narrator was simply suggesting them out of pure speculation due to the dish's mystery.

Dragon Urine - Suggested that the drink name may or may not be figurative.
Giant
Additional Notes
I included fried young giant spiders on this list because it is technically different from the roasted giant spider legs we see in the TTRPG adventure Buried Pasts.
Stuffed Vine Leaves may have appeared previously in the comic Deception. However I didn't feel I could make that determination unlike the desserts clearly shown in the comic Magekiller that are easily identified to me.
Quillback was mentioned in Unidentified Meat but isn't included as suggested or speculated food due to it being eaten by Inquisition soldiers in the Western Approach.
Saffron isn't a new spice to Thedas, as it was originally mention in the Last Court. It's origins seem to come from Antiva both due to the recipe and the fact they import most spices from Antiva in Serault.
Roasted turkey was first mentioned in the Dragon Age TTRPG. Thought it is common in the Free Marches, this dish is also popular among the Chasind.
Cupcakes seem to originate from Tevinter, as Cherry Cupcakes have been tied to them both in the cookbook but also the comic Magekiller.
Pumpkin Bread referenced to Tevinter, however we know that other nations such as Ferelden and Orlais, also grow pumpkins. The dish likely originates from Tevinter given the reference of it being used to tempt one to visit the Imperium. But thought it would be worth noting that pumpkins also exist in the south.
Licorice is previously mentioned by Dorian, referencing salted black licorice candy. But it may very well come from Riviain as the Rivaini tea blend has a variation that uses licorice root and they export the tea blend.
Additionally it seems peppermint and oregano also originate in Rivain.
Chocolate is not a new item to Thedas, however it is known to be imported to other nations from the Donnarks and Rivain.
