The official death toll given by the government of Puerto Rico for Hurricane Maria was originally 67, until it was later amended to 2,975 after backlash from the people who lived through it and knew that it was far worse than they were trying to portray. With this information, do you still honestly think that a Hawaiian native who is currently living in Maui is overexaggerating the impact of this disaster for personal gain?

Idk if it's for personal gain. I do believe this is a genuine effort to get people to care about the subject and donate, especially after seeing subsequent posts.

There's not much they could gain besides likes/replies/notes, which could be alluring, but I did state from the get-go that the information I took issue with could have been innocently/genuinely posted even if it's proffering unverifiable claims.

The death toll is assuredly going to go up. Idk if it will be as dramatic as Puerto Rico's situation as the scope of the disaster was larger, as was the associated need for resources. Unlike Puerto Rico, I'm not seeing immediately contradictory material on social media that makes evident an extensive government cover-up. That could of course unfold as more people return and share their experiences, but Puerto Rico was it's own deplorable situation and it's deplorable unique failures should be treated as such.

Don't trust the government, don't trust private corporations. But also don't assume EVERYTHING being presented is inaccurate and any alternatives are infallible until you actually have evidence or sources to back up the truth of it.

the day of love, many people call the 14th of febuary. valentines day.

“hey trey!” y/n shouted out, stumbling to catch up to the tall vice housewarden. the green haired boy turned to look at them, walking backwards as he watched them get closer.

“hey prefect, what can i do for ya?” he hummed, smiling playfully.

“well, stop being so tall for one!” y/n panted, making him chuckled.

“cant do that one, but whats number two? im sure its much more reasonable.” he stopped moving so the prefect could catch up fully.

“i hope it is.” y/n hummed. “could you help me make chocolate covered strawberries for riddle? im not a great baker and want to give them to him for valentines day.”

“much more reasonable. sure i can help you prefect. come with me” y/n beamed before nearly tackling the boy in a hug. “woah, dont knock me over!”

“you were not kidding when you said you were not a good baker” trey sighed. they had managed to finish a tray of chocolate covered strawberrys, but at the cost of the kitchens cleanness. the only thing not covered in chocolate was trey himself. the hearts kitchen was covered in splatters of chocolate, and so was y/n. y/n had chocolate all over their face, and their hands, and their apron, and pretty much everywhere else.

“i tried to tell you” y/n chuckled, resisting the urge to shake their hands off.

“what in the wonderland happened here?” there was a familiar voice to the both of them as y/n slid to try and cover the strawberries.

“trey was just trying to teach me to bake, im sorry for the mess, ill help clean it up, darling.” y/n quickly stated, before riddle crossed his arms.

“then why are you hiding a plate strawberries, lovely?”y/ns shoulders untensed as they moved out of the way of them, approaching riddle.

“your right. he was trying to help me make them for you, but well, i cant bake for the life of me. “

“i can see that,’ he said, before taking y/ns hand and holding it. “thank you, either way. true hearts day is a big deal back in the queendom of roses,.” he stated, before playfully bringing their hand up to his face, and sucking the chocolate off of their finger, making y/n flush softly. he smiled as he pulled away. “though the taste is perfect” he stated, flustering y/n. “now, go clean up and then clean up in here, ill send the diaster two in to help you. “

riddle said before leaving, leaving a flustered chocolate covered y/n stuttering.

🌸 It’s only been a day or two since she had moved into her dorm at Hope’s Peak - and there was no end to the amount of things the Aikido master had never before within this building alone. Growing up in the mountains, far away from civilization or electricity...it was proving to make this whole experience pretty overwhelming to her. She’d never really had trouble sleeping before, and even if she knew it was due entirely to her nerves, it didn’t stop the fact that it was making things far worse for her.

She’d already forgotten what these electric lamps were this morning ( being more used to candlelight or ones that ran on oil ), and the flicker of a dying light-bulb in the library  had startled her into knocking it over in her paranoid, sleep deprived state. She’d just started thinking about the best way of going about it when...

“Hey, degenerate! Watch where you’re stepping!” She takes the other student by the arm, pushing him back gently enough that he wouldn’t fall over with how she almost sees him step on the shards of broken glass. The consequences of what she’d just done didn’t hit her until moments later, to which she let out a growl of frustration.

“Ah- g-geez! What did I do that for? Touching a degenerate male like you...t-this is exactly the type of thing my master warned me about! Now whatever energy I had this morning is bound to be sapped away because I tried helping you...”

hey, i get misinformation is a problem and all, but have you considered that interrogating someone who allegedly is going through a national tragedy about whether or not it's real might like.. upset them? also, how would this benefit the person posting? all they did is spread awareness about something happening and post links to donate. i feel like it's overly cynical and kinda hurtful to assume someone is lying just because they talk about something you're not sure is happening.

Asking for sources isn't an interrogation and using that terminology is just as hyperbolic and non-persuasive as some of OP's language.

I never stated they were doubtlessly lying. I considered it and immediately also mentioned that this could also be well-meaning and genuine but still unreliable without sources and thus unacceptable as a source attempting to inform people and push them to donate their money.

I've since reiterated that they likely aren't lying and that their subsequent posts have been to their credit. It's not a matter of me not believing what they're saying. It's a matter of holding a post that's eliciting donations and action accountable; such a post could impact later energy among donations- if some of the unsourced claims aren't confirmed by reality, people might be discouraged or figure it's all not as severe as presented and thus not as worthy of their later donations. (Any suffering is worthy of combatting with donations; going to go ahead and reiterate I'm not implying it's okay to think something is less deserving; I'm stating it as a hypothetical risk for potential donors' perspectives that I've seen at play during prior disasters requiring long-haul donations)

so are you gonna read that person's response to you and apologize for being a piece of trash and actively downplaying the experiences of someone actually living through the disaster or what. btw being of indigenous descent does not remotely mean you can't be anti-indigenous yourself. this country doesn't give a damn about natives and you really immediately think someone's lying because the news ain't bothering to cover what's happening?

They've yet to provide anything to back up their claims. The links they've provided are useful but don't address any of the matters they've mentioned.

I haven't responded to it directly because I've been asleep or at work and would prefer to sit down and offer the responses the full availability of time they deserve.

I wasn't aware it was anti-indigenous to seek sources when someone is pushing information to entice people to donate money. They're pushing information that smacks of over-exaggeration and which could ultimately dissuade people from continuing donation efforts. Say someone donates because they've been led to believe multiple hundreds of people have died and there are people actively burning to death whilst on the phone with loved ones; when all of that isn't revealed to be true to the extreme extent stated, do you think the people who donated will feel compelled to keep doing so? They'll either be discouraged in the face of falling for inaccurate information, or could think the situation is so comparatively "better" than the extremes presented that it's not as crucial to donate.

This person still hasn't provided sources. This person hasn't even linked to threads where the presumed true information and state of things is being discussed. I'm aware the possible death toll is projected to be higher and have been told OP is somehow in the ineffable right because of it all being covered up and nebulous; but if it's so nebulous, WHY are they throwing around the specific number of "hundreds" of people, and where are the sources for that specific number? It's like they took the widespread and valid reports of the number being "high" and ran with that with hyperbolic aplomb; which is...annoying and at risk of being wrong but isn't anything nefarious.

But it becomes a problem when you're presenting it as an informative post of real, actual info. attempting to reinforce fear/upset and push people to donate their real, actual money in a manner that will hopefully inspire repeat donation or other momentum behind their concern.

I don't think they're lying and even mentioned that in my reply. I mean it's a possibility, but I'm leaning more toward this being founded on genuine concern for the situation and genuine experiences/genuine collection of information. I just don't trust these alternative sources when there no freaking link to them nor any elaboration to go on. Have you tried googling the points? There's nothing. The internet is a space that provides for those seeking voices besides corrupt government and private interests. When those voices aren't audible after a search? When I can't find a lick of evidence of some of the mentioned dramatic wretchedness and tragedy even from trusted counter-cultural and real-time community sources? That's weird. And hey, apparently they couldn't find them either or didn't deign to share them with the people they trust enough to push to donate money.

I do have more to say on the other topics mentioned in the original post which I can share, but I'll try and reserve that for my later response that isn't as rushed while I stand in my work break room, lol.
