Fujimoto answers you directly in this chapter (yes)
Tumblr media
How about reading CSM differently? Or at least cut it up differently? Because the more the chapters progress, the more a certain pattern seems to repeat itself: Part 1 sounds as if Fujimoto is unveiling CSM in its purest form, then Part 2 sounds as if CSM is responding to its own reception by its fans.
I've already said many times that Fujimoto likes contrast in form and in writing, and this chapter, though brain-numbing, simply follows Fujimoto's own rules, only in an even more accentuated way.
To prove my point, I recommend you reread chapter 133 "Protest", which for me speaks directly to the divisive image represented by Fujimoto and his work Chainsaw Man.
Tumblr media
I've already done an exhaustive analysis of it, but let's get one thing out of the way: Fujimoto answers his fans in part 2.
Whether it's by posing a heroine who seems incompatible with Denji, hating the figure of CSM which is nonetheless the work in which she's included, whether it's through the themes addressed by part 2, the question of dual identity, creating antagonists like Fake!CSM, setting up a church (us) around CSM
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We're in a work that speaks for itself, as chapter 137 confirms, and for this very rule, we refer to the previous chapters (an eternal restart).
Chapter 136, entitled "Normal Life", refers to a more-than-CENTRAL theme in Chainsaw Man, the nerve that irrigated the whole of Part 1 Denji's disillusionment, a bargaining chip for the former antagonist, Fujimoto takes his fans by the hand and puts them back into the game they know.
Tumblr media
We see what we'd all expected to see, a Denji who doesn't know how to fit into normal life, who's not cut out for
In my previous analysis, I explained how not only is Denji incapable of having a normal life, not only because of himself but also because of Yoshida, who offers him this life, and above all because of Fujimoto, who abruptly breaks the rhythm of his own chapter with this aggression, frustrating (I'm sure on purpose) his own fans.
Tumblr media
What Fujimoto does is make you think you were reading in the right direction, showing you a Denji depressed by his normal life, and like a child amused by not wanting to be predictable, he breaks what would otherwise have been a logical thing to see. I mean… Who could have foreseen such a title?
Tumblr media
Chapter 137 simply follows the same logic: Fujimoto has foreseen your frustrated reactions and knows full well that you've become attached to Denji, hoping that he'll break out of the cycle of manipulation.
He plays you in this chapter by setting up a confident, emotionally well-adjusted Denji who pushes this stranger away, reminding her of the rules of respect and consent.
Tumblr media
It's not just Denji's thoughts, the way he would have liked to act, it's also the way YOU would have liked him to act.
Now I can explain why these chapters, which break with the previous ones in their absurdity, are surely the most important in CSM.
Many had pointed to the famous cinema reference in chapter 136, others had even noted that chapter 136 constituted chapter 39 of part 2, responding to Makima's date with Denji in part 1 in the same chapter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But chapter 39 of part 1 wasn't just interesting for the cinema scene, it was the one that set the rules for understanding CSM.
In fact, it was this chapter to which chapter 93 responded, with Denji's ideology (in favor of bad movies) confronting Makima (against bad movies).
In the same way, the second chapter 39 (the 136th) also seeks to lay down rules
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapters 136 and 137 have never been more responsive to CSM fans, stubbornly denying them what they want.
What Fujimoto does is to return to cinema in its purest form in the second half, using the codes of the middle-aged male slasher.
That's why the two high-school students go to Fujimoto's karaoke bar, because you're going to find yourself in its purest essence: having fun with the utmost absurdity.
It's no longer a question of representing cinema, as in the two chapters 39, but of making cinema.
Tumblr media
But why a slasher? Think of the mythical slashers that traumatized a generation… Yes… The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a work that has achieved cult status for having opened the door to a new trend in American horror cinema: the slasher movie. Nothing represents a slasher movie more than a chainsaw-headed hero?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inspired by the Italian "giallos", slasher movies feature a masked killer, a gang of youngsters and the killings of the serial killer in question. Fujimoto takes up this theme in his own way: Denji doesn't kill with his iconic chainsaw, he's not masked, and it's the young couple who hold the beats and the shady men who get killed.
Tumblr media
If we go back to the depression we all expected to see, it's actually more complicated to understand: Denji's depression at being trapped in a type of writing that's too serious for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here Denji follows the rules of the game, enjoying himself by killing all those old people, saying ironically: "not bad this normal life".
Because this scene is perfectly normal in Fujimoto's karaoke.
Tumblr media
In itself, Yoshida was right. Indeed, no, Denji is not the hero of the normal film that was unfolding before them. Because they're not in normal life, it's projected onto the screen. CSM's reality is an absurd slasher. It is in this slasher, in this false normal life, that the protagonist, Denji, is.
Tumblr media
Denji is the protagonist of another film. And maybe in this one, the world needs Chaisaw Man.

[Steve]
My feet drag painfully beneath me as I re-enter the living space from the hallway, my heart beating heavily in my chest. “Steve,"  Wanda’s voice echoes in my head as I make my way over to the kitchen, sliding past Bruce who’s cooking something on the stove. "Oh my god. You’d never believe me.”
After that, the shaken girl hadn’t said much more. Of course, I had asked her what she meant, what I supposedly wouldn’t believe her about, but her regret for allowing her worries to slip was quick to show. She dismissed my questions, simply stating that she ‘didn’t know what she was saying’ and that she was sorry. I saw right through her, of course. It wasn’t hard to. Sensing I wasn’t going to get much further in that moment, I offered to give her some space, and to come back and check on her later. The girl had gracefully accepted, making sure to let me know that I didn’t have to come back. She’s always been one to worry about burdening others; little does she know how important she is to me, to all of us, and how far her fears are from the actual truth.
Pulling a mug from one of the overhead cabinets, I fill it with hot water from the drip, grabbing a teabag from the counter and plopping it down into the steaming liquid. Glancing around the room, I notice that Willa and Peter are missing; I figure they must be off in one of their rooms. Taking a deep breath in through my nose, I decide I would honestly much rather hang out with the two youngsters versus all the adults in this particular moment. Keeping my head down to avoid catching anyone’s attention, I silently make my way back to the hallway, stopping in front of Peter’s door, which is right next to Wanda’s, when I see the light shining out from underneath it. I lean the side of my head against the door, barely able to make out the teen’s cheerful voice as he talks to his friend, “-I saw them and instantly thought of you! Man, there are so many things you missed during the past few weeks.” A grin forms on my face at the kid’s unfaltering enthusiasm as I rap my knuckles against the door a few times to signal my arrival.
“Come in!” Peter calls from the other side of the door. I gently turn the knob and push it open to reveal the pair sitting on Peter’s bed, side by side, as Peter shows Willa a sheet of stickers.
“Aminals!” the little girl cheers in delight, Peter giggling at her mispronunciation of the word. Willa’s eyes grow wide as she holds the clear plastic page out in front of her. “Oh- I love them so m-much! Th-thank you,” she adds, causing her friend to beam proudly.
“Hey Cap, how’s it going?” the teen greets as he looks up at me from across the room.
“Good, good. Just checking in on my two favorite trouble-makers,” I tease harmlessly, though I’m quick to realize my mistake when Willa’s eyes dart up to meet mine, her brilliant smile falling right off her precious face. My stomach drops in guilt as I internally scold myself; I know she’s sensitive. I need to watch what I say.
“In- in trouble?” she squeaks, those big frightened eyes breaking my heart just like they always do.
“No,” I assure her quickly, “it’s just an expression, doll. I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Yeah, Wil, it’s okay! He was just kidding around,” Peter chimes in, rubbing the girl’s back supportively. Willa swallows hard, keeping a wary gaze on me. Mild panic builds in my chest as my mind begins to race, searching desperately for a way to de-escalate the situation.
“You got some stickers there?” I ask in reference to the object she’s holding, trying to change the subject. When Willa nods, I take this as permission to take a few steps into the room, closing the door behind me gently while doing my best to maintain an easy posture. The child clasps the sheet of stickers close to her chest, her bottom lip puffing out to signal she’s on the verge of tears.
“Mhmm,” she hums softly, her face plastered with an anxious expression. “P-please don’t take them… they’re fr-from Peter,” she pleads nervously.
“Oh no, sweetheart, I won’t take them,” I soothe carefully, daring to take a few more steps towards the bed as I bend down on my knees in front of the little girl. “Of course I won’t; those are from Peter, just for you. He said he found them and thought of you, right? That’s pretty special, huh,” I try, causing the brown-haired boy to blush and scratch the back of his neck. I would ask Willa to show me the stickers, but I don’t want her to think I’m trying to take the gift away from her completely. It’s so incredibly sad to see how anxious she gets whenever she’s given anything nice or special. I wish she could know that I want to give all of the nice and special things to her; I would give her the whole entire world if I could.
“Willa, look! There’s a puppy,” Peter points out as he tries to distract his friend, his finger reaching over and landing on the cartoon dog. “You think he’s friends with the guys in Paw Patrol?” The girl’s attention is completely occupied by fear, though, and she keeps her watery eyes on me, her lip sticking out even more as she extends her arms to hold out the sheet of stickers as an offering.
“For me?” I ask, confused as I take the plastic in my hands.
“’m sorry- know I can’t h-have it. Don’t hu-urt me,” Willa begs, her last sentences crumbling as she struggles to hold back her tears.
“Woah Willa, hold on a minute-” Peter tries, but he’s too late, a look of absolute heartbreak crossing his face as tears begin pouring down the child’s rosy cheeks. As her head falls shamefully, I soften my gaze, my shoulders slumping slightly. The last thing I ever want to do is trigger her trauma responses. It’s discouraging every single time it happens, but I’ve come to learn that with a case of PTSD as severe as hers, there’s only so much I can do as her caretaker to avoid scaring her. Bruce has said, though, that each time she panics and is met with gentle care instead of punishment or violence, her brain is slowly retraining itself on how the world works. So, in the end, I know we’re working towards less fear and more trust, and I’m happy to do whatever it takes to work Willa through her episodes.
“Hey, hey, hey,” I murmur lowly, “it’s just me, sweetheart. Just Daddy. You’re okay.” As gently as I can, I reach out and place the sheet of stickers back on her lap. My hand moves to her knee and rubs carefully, earning a frightened whimper, causing me to pull away. “You’re safe, Willa; you’re home, remember?” I ask, trying to bring her back into the present moment. I imagine that her brain has probably shot straight back to Hydra at this point. “You’re home, with Daddy and Peter. Nobody hurts you here, right?”
“Please,” Willa mumbles, her legs bending to raise her knees up to her chest. The stickers fall off to the side of her lap, and Peter picks them up sadly, glancing at me with heartbreak shining in his eyes.
“Give us a sec,” I mouth at him warmly. The kid nods silently, rising off the bed and walking past me to the door. I hear it shut behind him, signaling that we’re alone.
Now that it’s just the two of us, Willa becomes even more distressed, the entire bed shaking as she quivers against the mattress. “Willa-bug,” I coo, returning my hand to her knee. “You’re not in trouble. There’s nobody here to hurt you. You can have the stickers; of course you can, sweetheart.”
As I speak as tenderly as I can manage to her, I notice a faint red glow beginning to appear, the first spark glittering behind the child’s right ear. Slowly, the color stretches out across her skin, inching its way across her body until her whole shaking form is glowing a muted red. “Willa-?” I begin to ask, but before I can say anything more, a vision begins to flash before my eyes, just as I experienced before when Wanda and I tapped into her dreams.
Willa is huddled on a cold concrete floor. Similar to last time, I’m watching the scene play out from the little girl’s perspective, firsthand. On the ground in front of her sits an off-white piece of cloth, a rag that’s been twisted and tied into some sort of doll. Just beyond the worn-out looking object, a familiar pair of black boots are visible. An indescribable sense of dread washes over me, and I can only figure that I’m literally being exposed to exactly how the child is feeling, or at least, how was feeling in this memory.
“Stupid child. You know the rules. No possessions,” a harsh male voice booms, unrecognizable to me, but at the same time, I can tell that Willa knows its owner perfectly well. There is no sense of questioning as to who it is. There is only fear of what sort of punishment is waiting for her. “When will you learn? You useless brat,” the man continues. The boots in my vision are covered as the body attached to them bends down in front of her, the face a mere blur. “You will be made to learn,” the voice hisses, and a red-hot pain strikes against Willa’s cheek as the man slaps her, hard. Tears cloud up the image, and when they clear away, I’m startled to see that the blurred man’s face has been replaced with mine. Glancing down, it’s now visible that the ragdoll has turned into the sheet of stickers. “You will be made to learn. Understand?” a new voice rings out, and my heart aches as I identify it as my own.
More blows are dealt to Willa’s tender face, this time with a fist that belongs to an imaginary me. The poor girl cries out in pain, her arms reaching out in front of her to shield herself from the attack. Evil me grows even angrier at this and rises back up to his feet, beginning to kick the child against the ground. I can feel the air being knocked out of her completely, her ribs beginning to crack as the hard blows continue. Soon, my ruthless double is standing over her, stomping down onto her mangled body, her bones crumbling beneath the immense pressure of his boot. The foot raises up and lands on top of her neck and she wheezes through sobs, beginning to cry out for her dead mother.
Just as the boot is lifted to be sent flying down towards her face, the vision is cut off and I’m back in my own body, on the floor beside the bed in Peter’s room, kneeling before a sobbing Willa as she shoves herself back against the wall behind her, my hand no longer rubbing against her knee. The red glow has disappeared completely, and for a moment I’m entirely stunned, struggling to take in everything I’ve just witnessed. Slowly, my brain struggles to fit the pieces together. She entered one of those open-brained phases, and my hand on her knee must’ve let me see into her mind. She was having a flashback of something that happened at Hydra; then her brain replaced some of the details with those of the current situation.
It’s Willa’s muffled sobs that finally snap me back into action, and a familiar fullness builds up in my throat, my heart aching endlessly for my poor little girl. Cautiously, I lift myself onto the bed beside the panic-stricken child, reaching out a tentative hand and placing it on her shoulder. “N-no,"  she whimpers, her voice heavy with pain, the same pain I felt as I was experiencing her episode alongside her. "Mm- n-n- h-h-help, p-ple-ease. St-sto-op.”
“Willa, hey- oh, oh sweetheart,” I ramble through tears of my own, trying to shake her out of her paralyzed state, though I have a feeling that my less invasive attempts might be futile. “Honey, can you look at me? Come on, sweet girl. Where’re those pretty green eyes, hmm?”
Willa keeps her head down, sobs pulsing through her body steadily as she continues to choke on each syllable she spits out. “P-please, n-no… M-M-Mommy… want M-Mommy…"  The ache in my chest intensifies at her cries, the cries of a broken child whose body and soul have been crying out for her mother ever since she was born; a child whose cries have never been answered.
Deciding I can no longer stand sitting back and doing nothing, I reach out again, this time with both arms, and pull Willa over onto my lap. She thrashes against me, putting up more of a fight than usual to escape my grasp. "Hey, hey,” I ease, doing my best to keep my movements gentle while still holding onto the squirming little girl who’s so desperately trying to flee. “Shhhh, Willa. It’s okay. Just focus on me, doll. Can you try?”
The child’s puffy eyes struggle up to meet mine, and when they do, a whole 'nother round of tears begin, but at least she’s finally engaging with me, here and now. When a memory arises like this, I’ve learned that’s the important part. Grounding her, easing her back into the present and establishing safety. “Pease, p-please,” she stutters.
“Shhhh, sweetheart. There’s no need for that; s'just you and me, doll. And I would never hurt you, Willa, of course not. You’re always such a good girl for me; there’s no need to cry.” Just as I’m offering my soothing lines of comfort, there’s a knock on the door, and it swings open to reveal a worried-looking Peter.
“H-hey, I brought this,” he rushes out, holding up one of Willa’s light pink pacifiers in his hand. “I-I just thought- I don’t know. Maybe it would help? If not that’s okay- ’m sorry, should’ve waited after I knocked to-”
“No, that’s okay, Peter; it’s just what we need. Thank you,” I smile, a look of relief washing over the boy’s face as he nods, walking up to the bed and offering the child the object. Willa flinches back from it, causing guilt to flash in Peter’s eyes.
“Here, I can do it,” I offer quickly, not wanting him to feel bad about scaring her. At this point, that’s beyond the control of either of us. Taking the pacifier from Peter’s hand, I lay Willa back slightly in my other arm, and her big green eyes look up at me and the object in fear. “Hey sweet girl, you’re alright; it’s not scary, remember? It’s just to help,” I croon, raising the nub up to her lips. Willa presses her head back against my supporting arm, whimpering fearfully through tightly sealed lips, but I keep the pacifier in place, humming, “You’re okay, sweetheart. You just gotta open your mouth for me; there you go,” I soothe as she defeatedly lets the tip slide through her lips. Just like always, once the nub is settled nicely in her mouth, her stiff body almost instantly relaxes, all of her muscles releasing at once. “All better,” I coo mildly. She turns against my arm, her forehead pressing against my chest lightly.
“Daddy,” she mumbles against the pacifier.
“I’m here, honey. I’ve got you. You’re okay, it’s over now.”
“D-Daddy,” she says again, her voice growing quiet and tired. “Here with Daddy. ’s over now.”

This chapter confirms that Fake!CSM is the CSM Devil
According to me, according to me, according to me!!! Fujimoto will surely trample this theory but that doesn't stop a little effort of interpretation is always fun
Fujimoto's writing (I'm beginning to understand the character) consists of references, whether to previous chapters or the use of symbolism. Several draw through this part 2, I had evoked the one of the cat, there is also... the birds and the dawn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You will see that all this has a link with Fake!CSM and proves to me that he is indeed the CSM demon. When he mentioned the sunrise, it automatically reminded me of chapter 111 when Yuko died.
Fujimoto wanted to emphasize the time of day, the morning... without any of our dear characters being awake yet: the dawn marked by the awakening and the singing of the day birds. Fake! CSM appeared at this moment to attack Yuko in order to decapitate her
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now let's think by symbolism.
The bird symbolizes social cohesion at the moment, tying in with others. It was initiated by Bucky, whom Asa hates not for his demonic nature but because he was appreciated by all. Bucky that she continues to crush whether it is when she makes an immoral choice, or when she closes herself in solitude: her nightmare, the social rejection. This is logical since, after the death of this mascot, Asa was harassed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the chapter of Yuko's death, there is a preponderance of birds surrounding her, symbolizing the fact that she still has a link with Asa whom she has just left. But these birds might have a connection to Fake! CSM as well.
Tumblr media
According to the CSM Devil theory, CSM is as much admired as feared.
This would have given rise to CSM Devil the fake CSM.
There are several points in Chapter 128 that support this theory:
the size of his chainsaws and his size at all. Much larger. As if he was an exacerbated CSM, sublimated in horror.
Given his vocabulary, and his annunciatory manner of address, he also seems to prove a certain intelligence, yet another trait that makes him more powerful over Denji whose contrast is operated by the fact that he wants to take Asa's ass with him. Not to mention the fact that people today may fear Chainsaw Man more than chainsaws per se.
Mostly ironically, the door which is a symbolism that follows Denji enormously is more beautiful, better presented. As if it were his best version in every way, even in terms of the horror that surrounds CSM. An ironic way for Fujimoto to tell us that the trauma will be even worse, and that it evolves. No matter what form it takes.

But why talk about the dawn? What does it have to do with birds? Is he an ally and an enemy?
If Fujimoto refers to the dawn, it is first of all to push to the reading of chapter 111. In this one Yuko confides first of all to Asa: I dreamed of becoming Chainsaw Man! This already inserts the image of following the steps of the hero. To become like him.
Tumblr media
Yuko is killed for 2 reasons in my opinion:
Denji in itself had not finished the "job". The goal of a demon is that we fear him because his strength will be proportional. So he has to look invincible.
A reason that can't be conscious: Yuko's impertinence to have taken herself for Chainsaw Man. Her usurper having recalled his rank, by eliminating her.
The birds in chapter 111 would then not only echo the relationship between Asa and Yuko. But would also serve to initiate the theme of social relationships... but para-social. CSM Devil is the result of this fear and paranoia around Chainsaw Man.
And the dawn? Is it simply a symbolism that acts as a hint to the reader as Fujimoto did with the mention of the "bad movies" in chapters 39 and 93? Fujimoto is not content to make the symbolism simply a hint, the dawn must have a meaning. The bad movies foreshadowed the conflict of ideology between Makima and Denji, one wanting their extermination, the other accepting them as a part of existence. Symbolizing the evils of society.
Tumblr media
The dawn for me, will be the image that will be associated in itself with CSM Devil. When the dawn submerges, CSM sleeps. The purpose of CSM Devil is not to claim its own existence. It is only meant to act when CSM is inactive, symbolized by sleep.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's why CSM Devil helps Denji in this chapter. His goal is not to kill or replace Chainsaw Man immediately.
Because he is not Chainsaw Man himself, which is his vector and his reason for being. He's not an enemy, I wouldn't say an ally either, but his interest is that CSM continues to exist.
If I say that he is not an ally it is because I think that in the long term he would like to replace him in order not to depend on him. To devour him, when he has enough strength. And to do that, he has to create fear. And CSM must continue to exist. He is what fuels it. Fake! CSM is a long-term enemy, or a deuteragonist not only of this arc. And that whoever after Asa is another antagonist.
Tumblr media
As such, part 1 and part 2 follow each other with the same theme. Love, okay... Relationship with others, okay... But above all: identity.
Who is Chainsaw Man? The teenager that nobody knows in the back? Or the bloodthirsty demon who feeds on fear?
