To Boldly Go: A Camilla Noceda Character Analysis
I am of the opinion that Vee Noceda might hold a record for how fast a fandom changed their opinion on a character that they once considered untrustworthy and suspicious (and I’m sure the very intentional casting of the 2010s’ most sympathetic voice for a shapeshifter helped with that) but in terms of characters we already knew, very few other shows handled the reveal of a character’s true depth better than Thanks to Them did with Camilla Noceda. And a significant portion of that-at least from what I’m interpreting-is inherently linked to another major reveal of the episode: that Camilla and Manny Noceda were both involved in the early generation of what basically amounts to Star Trek fandom.
Bear with me here, and let me explain. (Info/theory dump under break)
Tumblr media
When Cosmic Frontier is first mentioned in the episode, it’s in the context of Gus pointing out the similarities to their current situation. When he lists names like Captain Avery and Chief Engineer O’Bailey, the Trek fans watching (particularly those familiar with DS9) have a little chuckle about the reference and how Gus and Hunter will definitely identify with the characters, assuming that will be the extent of this amusing copyright-friendly shout out.
Tumblr media
And then Gus reveals the closet, and we learn so much about Luz’s parents in this one brief shot (though I’m sure the TOH crew would’ve preferred a full episode):
Tumblr media
The sheer amount of merchandise, years upon years of ‘Galaxy Con’ loot and collectables and homemade props The amount of guest lanyards, each from a different summer of memories.
Tumblr media
The subtle but important suggestion that Manny had worked hard to update and improve his Circuit cosplay, countless hours of research and studying paused frames and crafting the fine details.
Tumblr media
The implication of Camilla getting prepared in a hotel bathroom, making sure her turquoise body paint was properly sealed and Manny’s mask was comfortably positioned before heading out to the familiar sanctuary of the convention hall.
The realization that some viewers might have, a link between Star Trek’s real-life impact on how many people who watched the show would later pursue scientific and medical careers and Camilla’s current job as a veterinarian.
How narratively fitting, that a girl who engages so passionately in modern fandom traditions like AMVs and commissioned fan art would be the child of two people who shared a love of the fandom that started it all, and quite possibly was how they met in the first place.
But then we wonder, why is this all hidden? What would cause Camilla to hide these clearly still important relics of her past down in the basement?
Tumblr media
We get part of the answer soon enough: She grew up, became a parent, and became far more conscious of how other people perceived and judged both herself and Luz. She tries being supportive of her daughter’s enthusiastic interests and strange habits, but social and societal pressure, along with the weight of her own past regrets, causes her to try to steer Luz away from making the same “mistakes” that she once did.
Tumblr media
Though, maybe when Luz was younger, she had a bit of time to go back to old habits. Manny’s enthusiasm would’ve been infectious, helping her remember the good times instead of dwelling on the bad. Perhaps one night they hired a babysitter for Luz and managed to watch a movie that, despite its unfortunate choice of lead actor, was an affectionate parody of Cosmic Frontier that showed its appreciation for what the series meant for its actors and fans.
Tumblr media
But without Manny, that spark of enthusiasm and nostalgia wouldn’t last long. Every record and reminder of what Camilla used to share with him would be boxed up, hidden, and left behind as another childish pursuit that she couldn’t afford to waste time on as a single mother. That plan to bury that part of herself deep and never let it grow too much within Luz might have continued as she expected, but Manny, fortunately, had other ideas. He must’ve recognized that spark of creativity and passion within Luz, he surely knew what would be left behind once he was gone.
Tumblr media
So he leaves Luz a gift, a memento, something that she would identify with and obsess over and create social bonds through like he and Camilla once did with Cosmic Frontier.
Tumblr media
And wouldn’t you know it, ol’ Circuit’s calculations were correct. Luz becomes hooked, enamored, she sees herself within Azura like her parents must have identified with their favorite show’s characters.
Tumblr media
Her love of the series is a constant theme throughout The Owl House, it inspired her to express herself, face challenges, make friends, defend the people she loves, and find someone who enjoys the fandom enough to understand her like nobody else could.
What does Camilla do in response to her daughter’s newfound hyper-fixation?
Tumblr media
She supports Luz, as much as she can, despite the weight of expectation on both of them. Helping her buy the next books, the new merchandise, even costume parts. One year, not long after they move to Gravesfield, they manage to have enough money to buy convention tickets. Entirely for Luz’s sake, of course, Camilla is too old for this sort of thing, and hardly recognizes most of the characters kids are dressing up as nowadays. But if her eyes linger on some familiar faces at the autograph tables, or she starts absentmindedly humming along to a certain show’s theme song being played over the loudspeakers, well, that’s her business. Old habits are hard to shake.
Speaking of which, I only noticed this after a rewatch, but Camilla’s fandom experience arguably makes an appearance earlier in the series:
Tumblr media
When Jacob’s doing his whole “delusional defeated villain trying to claim he’s the hero” bit, Mrs. Noceda’s response before delivering the righteous justice of La Chancla is “Yeah...a lot of bad guys say that.” On first watch I thought this was simply calling out IRL examples of scumbags with a self-centered ego, but later I realized she’s commenting on it in terms of its use as a somewhat cliche trope. As if she’s watched and read this kind of speech dozens of times before.
Tumblr media
For a long time, possibly almost a decade, Camilla manages to avoid directly confronting her past. She works as much as she can to support Luz, the forbidden relics are locked away downstairs, everything’s fine. But then the Hexside Kids show up at her doorstep, bringing with them a bit of the same Boiling Isles culture that allowed her daughter to express herself freely.
Tumblr media
She tries to keep it quiet, awkwardly denying any knowledge of the merchandise in her basement, but these new kids are her kids too, for now, and she supports their interests as much as she did with Luz. So if Hunter needs help stitching together an Engineer O’Bailey cosplay, or Gus needs some show-accurate props for his own outfit, well. She’s just being supportive, in a neutral and parental way, that’s all.
Once the portal is open and Luz starts to say something she’ll regret, however, Camilla can’t maintain the facade of a responsible, respectful, socially acceptable parent any longer. That old spark within her, the part that never really left, shows itself more than it has in years.
Tumblr media
She offers an alternative, something Luz would’ve never expected, defiantly and proudly stating that she’d be going into the portal to the Isles alongside them. It’s the specific wording that gets me, though, “It is our DUTY to help your friends get back to their families!” Seems to invoke the sort of “I’ll be your fearless champion” type speeches that Luz sometimes makes. However, we recall from Yesterday’s Lie that Camilla knows she isn’t great with on-the-fly improvised roleplay scenarios. She’s “not imaginative enough”. So it’s entirely possible that Camilla’s taking inspiration from lines that she hasn’t heard in a while but still knows by heart, after hearing it recited at the beginning of hundreds of episodes. A socially acceptable single mother and hard-working veterinarian would never consider something like this, it’s too risky, too dangerous, too many unknown variables on the other side of that portal.
Tumblr media
But Camilla Noceda grew up watching others face the unknown, for the safety of others, because it was their duty. Their “ongoing mission”.
Tumblr media
She might not understand anime yet, but for Luz’s sake and Manny’s legacy, she’s willing to learn.

Rakshasa and Asura share a few traits, the most blatant being their shared Lawful Evil alignment and their penchant for reincarnation. Their reincarnation works very differently from one another, though; rakshasa who are slain are forced to seek out an unborn mortal being and take the place of the soul, which causes them to be born as a fiend (in rare cases, if this tampering is somehow undone, a rakshasa-blooded tiefling is born instead while the rakshasa spirit is destroyed) that slowly transforms over the course of its life from a normal mortal baby into a full fiend with most of the memories of its previous life.
Each time a rakshasa is slain, more and more of its power and memories are cleaved from it as it incarnates into weaker and weaker members of rakshasa-kind, until eventually it’s destroyed entirely... or loses so much of its previous personality that it may as well have died anyway. If a rakshasa instead dies from old age (unlike most Outsiders, rakshasa do age and die) or performs some spiritually significant task, it keeps more of its memories and power when it next reincarnates. A rakshasa that reincarnates enough in this fashion can eventually ascent to the status of a Rakshasa Immortal, who can simply no longer die through anything but concentrated violence.
New rakshasa are born when a mortal performs an unspeakably vile ritual that binds their soul to the world itself, hence their alternative title: Earthbound Evils. This act distorts their mind and body, though the body’s change is significantly more dramatic (animalistic features, reversed limbs, and other such changes). Rarely, new rakshasa can also be born when one of the fiends births or sires a child with a mortal; rakshasa cannot reproduce with one another. Usually this creates a tiefling, but if the other parent is Evil enough, a full fiend is created.
On the other side of the Lawful Evil spectrum, we have the Asura. The first asura of a given breed are born when a god commits a terrible mistake or causes a divine accident; the greater the crime, the greater the fiend. Asura can also craft mortal souls into more of themselves, either by tithing a selection of Petitioners from Hell (in which they reside), or tearing them directly from living mortals and transforming them whole cloth. Anti-theists and other god-haters are often claimed by asura even if their souls rightfully belong to the devils, something that causes no end of contention between the fiends.
Their reincarnation works slowly but inexorably. No matter how many times an asura is slain, its spark will always return to Hell and be reborn over the course of years, decades, or centuries. Like with rakshasa, an asura that’s slain always comes back weaker (though there’s a floor--the Tripurasura--that they cannot go below), while an asura that achieves some impressive deed or meditative breakthrough returns more powerful than before... whether or not they they were killed by the hand of another, or simply ended their own life to prompt this new growth in a manner akin to burning down a forest to assure it grows back stronger.
An asura that impresses an Asura Rana can also convince them to donate a ‘cache’ of quintessence that they can tap into to prevent any loss of power when they reincarnate, like a save point, or simply accelerate the speed at which they reincarnate. This cache can also be used to evolve the asura into new and stronger forms when it reincarnates, even if it learned nothing on its own to prompt its own spiritual transformation. An asura that disappoints or infuriates an Asura Rana may meet a terrible fate, smelted down into raw quintessence and used to create something actually worthwhile, their personality and past utterly obliterated. Typically, this is done by the Rana eating the disappointment, and either evacuating them as Tripurasura (which can be reshaped with more quintessence investments) or absorbing them entirely. This cannibalism is one of the few ways in all of creation that can permanently destroy an asura, as even the gods cannot put a permanent end to the fiends on their own.

The Ballad of Kazimir Littlemoon, Part 2: The Surface (1/2)
"That was your son from the minute you set eyes on him.”
Kazimir, or Kaz, Littlemoon is a Dungeons and Dragons character, and now a BG3 Tav, of mine. This is his story.
Contents: Menzoberranzan (1/2) Menzoberranzan (2/2)
The Surface (1/2) The Surface (2/2)
Waterdeep (1/2) Waterdeep (2/2)
CW: some mention of anti-drow and anti-tiefling sentiment
Quindelline Littlemoon was born in Farwallow-upon-Dessarin, a small suburb of Waterdeep nestled in a foothill. Not more than 500 people inhabited the village, composed mainly of Lightfoot halflings. Unlike their brethren in the city, they had decided a more idyllic landscape was suited to their sensibilities, so broke off many years ago to form the town.
From a young age, Quindelline, or Quin as she preferred, had the taste of adventurer in her heart. She longed to see this realm and others for all they had to offer. Her father, Milo, gifted her the first shortbow she ever fired for her 8th birthday. And it was love at first shot. The little halfling girl found herself at home in nature, on the hunt. Beaming with pride as she brought home rabbits and squirrels to her mother. And when she was finally given the opportunity to track a troublesome coyote that had been tormenting their livestock, she knew that being a ranger was her life’s calling.
Her calling brought her to the big city as a young adventurer, itching to get her feet wet on contracts and jobs. She scoured taverns for job listings, billing herself as a skilled ranger and tracker. Eventually finding herself ingratiated with the others much like her. Fortune and fame seekers, do gooders and devotees of gods she’d never even heard of. And steadily, she learned of the art of horizon walking from rangers far more skilled than she.
Horizon walkers specialized in banishing beings back to the realms they belonged to, and maybe even travel to these far off realms themselves. And it was clear that this conclave of rangers was for her. Her line of work brought her to the Feywild, the Underdark, and even Avernus on occasion. Guarding planar portals and befriending the benevolent forces of other realms to aid them in keeping the balance between worlds.
But many of those valiant exploits would come later in her life, when she truly made a name for herself not only as a ranger, but as a friend to many other great adventurers. And as the mother of one very special son.
For this story, we ought to begin in the summer of 1371. Quindelline had freshly turned 25 in the spring, and the festivities of a halfling wedding had just commenced in the heart of Farwallow. Her wedding, in fact. To a fellow young halfling by the name of Rosina Tulriner. Rosina was a halfling of unique background, the Tulriner name traditionally belonging to gnomes. And assuredly, in her ancestry there was gnomish blood. As such, they were magnificent tinkerers and designers by family business.
Rosina was a jewelry maker, having inherited the trade from her mother, Ida. And her father, Kellen, being a finesmith allowed her unfettered access to a forge to practice her craft from the time she could hold a pair of tongs. She originally hailed from Waterdeep proper, operating out of her family’s small basement shop in the North Ward. But she traveled with her mother every year to the surrounding areas to sell their wares and attend artist’s guild events. And one of their many stops was Farwallow-upon-Dessarin.
There she met Quindelline, and it was as close to love at first sight as any real relationship could be. They met each other every year as Rosina traveled with Ida and steadily their close friendship blossomed into love. Rosina was a gentle, even-keeled presence that brought Quin’s fire-filled heart back down to the ground. It was like magic.
However, there was one question in the backs of their minds as they planned their wedding, and their future life together. Halflings put a great deal of importance on creating families. Both of them were no different, and longed to be parents someday. But didn’t take into account the possibility that they’d be marrying another woman. Making that prospect of children start to look slim. However, not impossible.
Halflings also bore a tradition of adopting children in need to supplement their large families. So Quin and Rosina decided that they, too, would look for children that needed a loving home. As it turns out, they wouldn’t need to look for long. Because life would seemingly drop a child into their laps.
Quindelline was contracted to delve into the Underdark that summer with a party of three other warriors, hired by a royal alchemist in search of rare ingredients. Her three companions were already familiar to her, other adventurers from Waterdeep. A half-drow paladin of Eilistraee, well-versed in the mapping of the Underdark and how best to fight when encountering drow. A tiefling rogue who still owed Quin money from their last card game. And a dragonborn fighter who had a penchant for picking Quin up in the heat of battle.
The quest itself was simple, and it went with few hiccups. The party traveled to a known planar portal into the Underdark that would put them in the area known to be abundant in the ingredients of their quarry. Once arrived, they camped for several days while searching and collecting. Off in the distance, the lights of Menzoberranzan glowed against the cavernous stones. So long as a distance was kept, and the party was strategic in their movements, the party would be safe from any patrolling drow in the outskirts of the grand capital city.
On the last day of their quest, finally having found a coveted mushroom that eluded them thus far, they heard a noise piercing the eerily silent underground air. It sounded like a baby’s cry. Before they went to investigate, Quindelline and the rogue swept the area for drow. Or any other creature that could have set the trap for unsuspecting do-gooders. When they found nothing, they followed the noise as it waxed and waned. Until they came upon a small cavern.
Laying at its mouth, in a woven reed basket covered with spider’s silk, was an infant. So new that his little wrinkled face was still bruised from birth, it seemed. And the remnants of his umbilical cord still clung to his bloated tummy. Immediately identifiable were the fine points of his ears. The infant was elven.
And finally, upon looking at him closer by their torchlight, they found he wasn’t bruised purple from the trauma of his birth. He was purple by nature. He was drow.
His cry was growing weaker by the second when the party reached him. Clearly hungry and tired and forgotten. Wailing out in a final effort to save himself.
Quindelline fell to her knees and cleaned the boy of his spider silk, searching for anything to identify him. A name or a note. But found nothing. Turning then to the issue of the boy himself. She held him to her chest to try and soothe him, rocking him and cooing to him. She reached to her pack and began to rummage for her rations.
“Quin, what in the Hells are you doing?” the tiefling rolled her eyes.
“What does it look like I’m doing? Someone left the poor thing out here all alone. He’s gonna die out here.”
“That’s my problem how? He’s a drow. They’ll make more.” she whisper-shouted to Quin in frustration, trying to get her to hurry up and move on.
“Excuse me?” the paladin crossed his arms, “This child is no less deserving than you. Watch what you say.”
The tiefling opened her mouth to fire back with vitriol, but no words came out. She realized how her comments sounded. She’d been told many times how the world could do with fewer tieflings. How unfair her judgment of the defenseless child was. She dropped to her knees beside Quin and began to search for something suitable to feed the starving infant. They settled on a small container of deep rothe yogurt that the rogue acquired from traders while they were camped.
The fighter stood watch as they prepared the infant for travel. Quin made it clear that the boy was coming with them to the surface, come hells or high water, and the paladin agreed. He helped swaddle and affix the infant to Quin’s back while he carried her rucksack. Once secured, they were off to the portal out immediately. They did their best to disguise the infant in layers of swaddling to not arouse suspicion.
Once they made it to the surface, the party let out a collective sigh of relief. They emerged in the forests of the Sword Coast as morning was just breaking over the hills. And Quin unwrapped the boy from her back and properly looked him over for injuries. Miraculously, he was safe and sound apart from being filthy and starving. She took him to the river nearby and gave him a proper cleaning. The paladin emerged as she was swaddling him back up to trek back to Waterdeep.
“What will we do with him when we’re back to the city?”
Quin sighed, and looked at the infant. His wide, pink eyes looked back. She got to work clothing him and wrapping him up.
“I imagine you’d like to take him to your people. Back to the Dancing Haven. Raise him up in the Church. Make him into a good, Eilistraeean boy.”
“I would like that. That doesn’t mean that’s what’s best for him.”
Quin still worked at swaddling the boy, letting the paladin continue.
“You just got married, did you not? That jewelry maker. Rosie, you called her. I remember you talking about her on the last job we went on together.”
“I did, this spring. Her name is Rosina. I call her Rosie. We just bought a home.”
“How many bedrooms?”
“Three,”
“Then it’s settled,”
Quin paused, looking up from the boy to the paladin.
“What’s settled?”
“The boy. He’s yours.”
Quin’s eyes widened. There was no way he was serious. A drow on the surface was usually a serious business, sometimes even grim. Keeping them out of Lolth’s hands and into Eilistraee’s was a tough job, and this infant could pose no smaller a threat.
“But what of Lolth? Why was he abandoned? What if we interfered with something much bigger than him,” Quin gestured to the now sleeping bundle, “He needs the Church, he needs you to protect him. I and Rosie can’t do that alone.”
“And you won’t do it alone. You have me, and you have the Church. I’ll be reporting on the boy, it’s part of my duty. They’ll always be there to protect him. But what he needs now is a loving home. The Church will have undying love for this boy, but it isn’t a proper home. I haven’t the time nor the skill to raise up a child.”
“What makes you think I have the time or the skill to raise him up any better?”
“I know you, Quin. You’re too utilitarian to buy a three bedroom home for all but one of those rooms to sit empty. You’ve a wife, a wife that doesn’t venture out as you do, where I remain regrettably solitary.
Quin remained silent, looking at the now dozing bundle before her.
“And I know your heart. I saw the way you went to him. That was your son from the minute you set eyes on him.”

Schroedinger's streaming service just died
Tumblr media
When you buy a vinyl record, cassette or CD, you own it, thanks to copyright law’s “first sale” principle. I have real criticisms of copyright law, but at least it’s a law, created by a democratically accountable legislature. When you buy a digital download of a song, your use of it is governed by private terms of service, not copyright law.
These terms of service are outrageous. Not only are they incredibly long and dull, but they confiscate all the rights that Congress reserved to the public when they crafted copyright law. You can donate your old CDs to a library, you can leave your mix-tapes to your kid, you can divide your CDs in a divorce, but none of that stuff is on the table with digital media.
Virtually no one has ever read these terms of service. That makes sense — not only are they written to be impenetrably soporific, but they’re also so manifestly unfair that just trying to parse them risks an aneurysm. Perhaps the only way to read the Itunes ToS with your sanity intact is via R Sikoryak’s incredible graphic novel (!) adaptation:
https://memex.craphound.com/2017/03/03/terms-and-conditions-the-bloviating-cruft-of-the-itunes-eula-combined-with-extraordinary-comic-book-mashups/
The confiscation of your rights to your digital media depends on the fiction that you are licensing the music, not buying it. The fact that there’s a giant “buy now” button on the interface notwithstanding, tech and entertainment companies maintain that you are engaged in a licensing deal, like an advertiser buying synch rights for a hamburger commercial.
The digital media industry wants to eat its cake and have it, too. Even as they tell you that you’ve just bought a “license” and therefore have no rights under copyright, they tell their workforce — the creative laborers who composed, arranged and performed the music — that you’re buying your music, not licensing it.
That’s because all the record deals from the prehistory of digital music have two different royalty rates: when a musician’s work is sold, they get a low royalty rate (12%-22%). When that same work is licensed, they get a 50% royalty.
When the digital music industry was getting started, they invented a new form of quantum indeterminacy. When a customer paid $0.99 for an Itunes track, they were engaged in a license. When that transaction was recorded on the artist’s royalty statement, it was a sale. Like Schroedinger’s alive/dead cat, digital music was in superposition, caught in a zone between a sale and a license.
Because only music executives were allowed to open the box and collapse the wave, they could ensure that it always collapsed into a state favorable to the record label and its tech partners. If a listener was involved, the wave collapsed into a license transaction, and the listener was deprived of the rights the legislature promised them. If a musician was involved, the wave collapsed into a sale transaction, and the musician was deprived of majority the money their contracts guaranteed them.
Now, a musician has managed to drag digital music into the realm of classical physics, ending its quantum indeterminacy. Electronica pioneer Four Tet has successfully wrung a settlement out of his label, Domino, who will now be forced to treat his digital recordings as licenses and pay a 50% royalty, rather than the 13.5% they’d insisted on.
https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-61871547
Four Tet will get £56,921.08 and 5% interest compounded over all the years the label was screwing him: “I really hope that my own course of action encourages anyone who might feel intimidated by challenging a record label with substantial means.”
It’s great to see Four Tet get some fundamental justice. One way that heritage acts can get some justice of their without going to court is through copyright termination. In the US, artists can terminate their copyright deals after 35 years and get their rights back:
https://doctorow.medium.com/take-it-back-e3689628f4f0
This has enabled many creative workers to cut through legal messes; for example, George Clinton was was able to terminate copyright assignments to 1,413 of his works, comprehensively ending the otherwise endless litigation against an unscrupulous manager whom Clinton accused of stealing his catalog:

Ringrazio @theprettysimmersblog per averla tradotta
GEN UNO:
- Avere almeno 3 tatuaggi
- Padroneggia le abilità di fabbricazione/maneggevolezza/benessere.
- Ama i tratti all'aperto/fregano
Sei cresciuto estremamente amato e accudito dai tuoi genitori.
Comincia persino a sembrare scoraggiante.
OBIETTIVI:
- Adotta 4 bambini
- Non deve avere una relazione fino all'età avanzata
- Sposarsi come un anziano
- Completa l'aspirazione Super Genitore

🐰⭐️ for the ask game!!
@/creati-craft
🐰 Who is your favourite hermit?
Oh gosh... I don't think I could pick. But Tango is definitely very high to the top of the list, along with Bdubs and Impulse. And Doc. And Ren. And... yeah. My "favorite" is probably whichever one I'm watching at the moment. XD
⭐️ If you could meet your favourite hermit, what would you say to them?
Again, I can't really pick a favorite hermit, but the one I think I'd currently most want to meet would be either Impulse or Tango. And for either of them, I would probably very awkwardly say something super trite about how much their content helped me get through the nightmare that was 2020. I'm terrible at meeting people, but I don't know how different my life would be if I hadn't discovered their streams and videos in the middle of that very lonely, very hellish time. <3
