all of the “Hunter has to get a customer service job” posts are hilarious and i love them so please don’t think this is me trying to shit on the concept, i treasure each and every one of them i see, but

real talk? i think Hunter would end up in for real actual human prison if he had to work retail or food service.

Hunter is a former child soldier. Hunter was a high-ranking government official in a dictatorship. the right-hand man to a tyrant who ruled through fear and violence. he spent a chunk of his teens with authority second only to the literal emperor.

the very second that some lady tries to scream at him for not letting her wear new shoes out of the store to her car or someone gets snippy with him for not returning their 3 year old blender or a dude throws a fit because he said “no pickles” but what he meant was “extra pickles, hold the mayo”? Hunter is going to vault over the counter and put them in a headlock.

I get that it’s mostly people venting their frustrations about JK Rowling getting another hundred million bucks because society at large including ostensible trans allies don’t care that she’s making money off the game but like when people are like “if you EVEN PIRATE this game you are going to TURBOHELL FOREVER” it’s just like…. What are we even trying to accomplish here

#like it isn’t rigorous at all because if your objection is financially supporting a brand that does incredible damage with their money #then we could talk about like fruit company coups or nestle abusing water rights or any of the other billion ways the corporations we rely #on to live regularly get people killed #and that’s like not to say that Rowling hasn’t done incredible damage with her fortune #just like. idk it’s so clear that there’s no logic to this other than gut reaction outrage #because we hate this author in particular

if i had a nickel for every time the CIA has helped boot a well-loved and supported politician out of office in another country (where said politician was either democratically elected or fairly appointed to their position) because some company didn't like that the politician was looking out for human rights, i would have AT LEAST two nickels. there may be more.

The term "banana republic" was originally coined to describe countries in Central and South America (mainly Honduras and Guatemala) whose economies were rendered dependent on the production and export of bananas (among other agricultural goods, but mainly bananas) by American fruit corporations leveraging the power of the U.S. government, the U.S. military and the CIA.

Throughout most of the of the 20th century, American corporations such as United Fruit, Cuyamel, and the Standard Fruit Company owned large portions of these countries' lands, to the point that in some cases they controlled their railway, road, and port infrastructure, and they engaged in a variety of imperialist actions to lower production costs, such as violence against labor activists and anti wage reform lobbying.

The pinnacle of this phenomenon was the 1954 Guatemalan coup, when United Fruit convinced the goverment of US president Dwight D. Eisenhower that the elected president of Guatemala, Jacobo Árbenz (who had expropriated some of the company's unused land and given it to Guatemalan peasants) was secretly working with the Soviet Union, resulting in a CIA coup which deposed the Árbenz government and replaced it with a thirty-year right-wing military dictatorship which effectively acted as a puppet government to protect the interests of United Fruit and the U.S. government.

Nowadays the term has broadened to refer to any small, economically unstable country with an economy which has been rendered dependent on the export of a particular natural resource due to economic exploitation by a more powerful country.
