The 1995 “Henry IV” tv film and why we all need it
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113549/
Here’s the IMDB link. But I’ll tell you about it here anyway. :-)
It was a combined version of Shakespeare’s Henry IV parts 1 and 2, conflating the two rebellions down to one. It worked perfectly script-wise, I note: bringing in all my favourite roles from part 2 (Doll, Pistol, Shallow) while the main plot was more focused on that of part 1.
It also brought in a bit of extra dialogue from Merry Wives of Windsor and, notably, it had an introductory scene in which Hal and Hotspur, as boys, were playing at swordfighting, and then overheard the scene in Richard II where Richard hands over his crown.
They had FUN with all the sun imagery.
ANYWAY. The cast. The fucking cast.
Ronald Pickup (voice of Aslan in the BBC Chronicles of Narnia) as Henry IV. Jonathan Firth as Hal. David Calder (who not enough people have heard of) as Falstaff. Elizabeth Spriggs as Mistress Quickly. Corin Redgrave as Worcester. Jane Horrocks as Doll Tearsheet. Rufus Sewell as Hotspur. JOSETTE FUCKING SIMON as Kate Percy. Paul Eddington (in his last ever role <3 ) as Justice Shallow. Toby Jones also turned up in a really tiny role!
And, in that introductory scene, ROGER ALLAM AS RICHARD II.
I can find a few photos on the internet of Pickup and Firth and Calder. I can’t find any of anyone else. Roger Allam fandom especially: if we can find them we need them. Because that was it, that was the moment, aged 17, when I fell in love with his acting. He was on for a tiny amount of time and he fricking owned it all. And up against Pickup who was no slouch. <3
Anyway. Does anyone have this? Because if so: please do things with it. It’s great. :D  (CW: I do note however that while Calder is great and gorgeously complex, it’s not the least fatphobic portrayal of Falstaff ever. :-/ I mean some of that is always a thing because it’s sadly in the plays, but if you want a portrayal that doesn’t lean *too* much in that direction, you want Anthony Sher for the RSC or indeed Roger Allam for the Globe, both available in film forms.)

First Look: Harry Styles Plays a Closeted Officer in My Policeman
Tumblr media
An exclusive peek at Amazon’s sweeping romantic drama, which features gripping performances from Styles, Emma Corrin, and David Dawson.
Robbie Rogers had finally reached his boyhood dream of playing professional soccer, first as a part of Columbus Crew in Ohio and then later as a member of the English soccer team Leeds United. But he was keeping his personal life—and the fact that he was gay—a secret. “My experience in sports was that you can’t be gay. The only person I knew about was Justin Fashanu, and he killed himself,” Rogers says now, reflecting back on that time. “I was very much struggling with who I was. I hadn’t had a love story of my own. I was thinking about regrets and where I would be in 10, 20, 30 years.”
While in Leeds, someone gave him a copy of My Policeman, a 2012 romance novel by Bethan Roberts. It shook his world. “It was kind of like my coming-out book,” he says. “I really think the book found me.”
The story, set in Brighton in 1957, follows a policeman named Tom Burgess who is gay, but living in a society where it’s illegal to be so. He begins dating a schoolteacher named Marion, but also embarks on a love affair in secret with a museum curator named Patrick Hazelwood. Forced to repress his true feelings, he decides to marry Marion, and as tensions rise between the married couple, Patrick’s life ends up in shambles.
It’s a powerful story of forbidden love, regret, and living as your true self. Rogers, who came out publicly in February 2013, has read it multiple times over the years and eventually shared it with his then boyfriend, prolific producer Greg Berlanti (they married in 2017). They teamed up with Sarah Schechter, partner at Berlanti Productions, and Cora Palfrey and Philip Herd of Independent Entertainment to produce the project and adapt the novel into a film.
The end result is a sweeping love story, starring three bright-burning stars—Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, and David Dawson, as shown in these first-look images—that captures the stifling hold of societal hurdles. It took about eight years to get it made, but for Rogers, it feels like the film, which Amazon will release in theaters in the U.S. and U.K on October 21 and on streaming worldwide November 4, is coming out at just the right time. “Unfortunately, we see what’s going on in Supreme Court, what’s going on in Texas, going in Florida, in different places in the world,” says Rogers of the recent string of antigay “Don’t Say Gay” bills and similar legislation. “The world moves forward slowly and then there are very ignorant people that want to send us back to the ’50s.”
My Policeman jumps between two time periods: the 1950s, in which Tom (Styles) is navigating this love triangle with Marion (Corrin) and Patrick (Dawson); and 40 years later, when Tom (Linus Roache) and Marion’s (Gina McKee) strained life together becomes more complicated when Marion agrees to take in Patrick (Rupert Everett) after he suffers a stroke.
When director Michael Grandage, a prolific British theater director who found himself drawn to the story as a gay man, began looking for the trio of young actors to star in the 1950s-set story line, Styles was not on their radar. His team actually came to Grandage’s, saying that Styles had read the script and was very interested in the film.
Grandage met with Styles in his London office, and was immediately impressed by the pop star. Styles, known best for his time as a part of boy band One Direction and his successful solo career, hadn’t done much in the film world yet, making his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 war film, Dunkirk. But Grandage says Styles came to that meeting as a fully formed actor. “He had read the script so many times that he knew every single beat of it at that meeting. I found that incredibly impressive. He knew other people’s lines; he knew all of his lines. He knew why he wanted to talk about it, why one scene worked this way and another worked another way,” says Grandage.
Styles’s career onstage and the massive fan following he’s amassed also made it clear that he and Tom actually have a lot in common. “This story is about two people that are in love with Tom, slightly obsessed with him,” points out Rogers. “Harry—the world is so transfixed on him, on his every move.”
And it would turn out, Styles’s limited experience as an actor worked well for this part, says Grandage. “Because he hasn’t done much, he hasn’t developed the ability to work out tricks or even lie. He can only do it truthfully and as he knows it,” he says, likening his naturalistic work to that of a young Albert Finney or Tom Courtenay. “They just bring themselves to the role, and it seems to be very uncomplicated in the way they achieve it and Harry had that,” he says.
While there’s been a diversifying in the sorts of love stories that make their way onto screen (including the recent release of gay rom-com Fire Island), conversations about who should be cast in the lead roles in a film like this are still ongoing and nuanced. Rogers and Grandage said there were several discussions about casting their three stars, and the importance that the LGBTQ+ community was represented. “We thought it would be wonderful to do a film like this and at least have some people in it who could speak to an experience that was authentic for themselves,” says Grandage. Since Patrick is the character who is most open about his sexuality, Grandage says it was important to find a pair of actors that would “be able to bring something of themselves to it and also be able to speak to it as well.” They found that with Dawson, whom Grandage had worked with several times in the theater, and Everett.
Corrin was cast before their breakout season of The Crown had been released. Marion is a relatively progressive character; in Corrin, who came out as nonbinary last July, the creative team found someone “you can’t take your eyes off of,” says Rogers.
As for Styles, who has grabbed headlines for his gender-bending fashion but doesn’t speak much on his sexuality, their focus was on casting someone who could come to grips with the character’s inner turmoil. “The whole point of Tom is that he is a character who is confused. It’s made more problematic by the fact that he’s a policeman, and he’s in a career that is about upholding the law. And the law in the country at the time is about everything he feels—the complexity of it is something that whoever was going to play younger Tom and older Tom needed to somehow understand and absorb,” says Grandage.
Grandage and the cast had about three weeks of rehearsal, a process he says went especially smoothly. “It was very, very easy, because all three of those younger actors are very open—they don’t make acting difficult and they don’t make the process of filmmaking difficult,” he says. “They come open-minded, wanting to please each other. They were there for each other.”
That rehearsal also gave the cast a chance to work through the film’s the sex scenes. Grandage says that they were carefully choreographed to avoid prurience: to “quite literally show something that was about ‘lovemaking’ in the broadest sense of the word, something that was choreographically interesting and not just some kind of thrusting sense of sex going on.”
Grandage was inspired by the 1959 Alain Resnais film Hiroshima mon amour, in which the body language is “very sculptural,” and brought on an intimacy coordinator to help the actors feel comfortable during the most sensual scenes, which were between Tom and Patrick. The most heartbreaking part of My Policeman, says Grandage, “is that these two men, when they’re together, seem to be free. And then when he has to have an act of lovemaking, or a sexual act, with his wife he seems to not have that freedom, just even in his body language.”
Despite having a star-studded cast and what felt like a unique story, Rogers says My Policeman wasn’t an easy film to get made. “I won’t be specific [with names]…but I think for the last eight years, we’ve always heard the most political versions of ‘this is going to be difficult to make’ or ‘no one’s going to watch this,’” he says. So to see it finally make its way to screens will feel especially sweet for all those involved.
And while My Policeman feels especially timely, it is, at heart, a story about romance and letting yourself find love. It’s a story that helped many, like Rogers, find their way to their true selves, and he hopes perhaps this film can do the same for others. “It’s never too late to have a love story,” says Rogers. “Don’t allow regret to weigh you down—there’s always hope.”

I’m not big on Persuasion but I prefer the 2007 version myself. Then 1995. I’m not sure where to place 2022 - I enjoyed it (yes, I know) but it's different.

Clearing my desk before The Ink Black Heart.
Finished one ...
.
Finished reading Anatomy of a Scandal. It was a good holiday read. The interleaving of many points of view worked well and it was generally well-written although there were a few times when I winced. Strongest point was the description of arriving at university and trying to belong. Weak point was the ending, which is just complaisant and left a bad taste in my mouth. I would not reread it but it was OK.
.
Watched Persuasion (1995). My favourite is the 2007 movie but I really enjoyed this - like a much needed detox after watching the Netflix one (I don't want to talk about it). I felt it presented the emotions of Anne and Frederick beautifully.
See you on the other side. 🖤

Corine Myers Analysis (with a bit of comparison to Jake Rogers)
Heads up: this is a LONG analysis--in my Google docs, this is over 2100 words lol
So, after reading @naancypants really good Jake Rogers analysis (sidenote--I’ll probably make one, too at some point when I get the energy to write another long post), I was reminded of another often-overlooked evil genius character--Corine Myers. I thought I’d be fun to analyze Corine and also compare and contrast her with Jake.
So, Corine Myers. She’s got one of my favorite, most relatable, in a way, motivations out of any Nancy Drew culprits (technically, she has three motivations: find Poe’s manuscript, get the scholarship, and, at the very least subconsciously retaliate against her classmates). The game isn’t clear if she was planning on selling Poe’s manuscript or not (I have a feeling she would either keep it to herself or sell/give it to the school in order to increase her reputation with the faculty and garner some respect with her classmates, but she definitely wouldn’t, like, drop it on eBay). All three of her motivations tied nicely into each other--if she got rid of the competition to be valedictorian, she could retaliate against all of the people who treated her poorly, and the less people around, the easier it would be to find the manuscript.
It’s the scholarship and retaliation motivations that I really want to talk about. We’ve had (very boring) culprits whose motivations are “money,” but, like I said, I think Corine would be very selective with who she’d be willing to sell the manuscript to, and would probably only consider Waverly itself. But a culprit who’s also somewhat motivated by wanting scholarship money? I think that’s a unique twist on the cliche money motivation of other culprits (and is another game that once again shows how expensive college is). But even with this unique twist on the “greed” motivation, that’s not even her primary motivation, either. The following is an exchange between Nancy and Ned:
Nancy: I think she’s real bitter about how the kids here treat her, and is doing all this Black Cat stuff to get even with them.
Ned: What about being valedictorian?
Nancy: I think that’s just another reason she’s bitter. I think she thinks she’s got being valedictorian in the bag, and she resents being compared to kids she feels are clearly inferior to her.
Nancy is right. Corine is very proud of her intelligence. When Nancy asks if she got in on a legacy, Corine says, “I earned my way into this place. I was accepted because I was the most deserving applicant like ever.” And she makes it very clear that she thinks that she’s the only one who will actually get the spot of valedictorian, even if she isn’t as popular as Leela and Izzy. (Sidenote: Waverly’s faculty is absolutely terrible, but that is a post for another day). Becoming valedictorian would be amazing for her: she’d finally get respect, her political aspirations would benefit greatly from such an honor, and she’d be getting revenge on her classmates who treated her poorly (especially Izzy, who is equally as confident that she will become valedictorian). This leads right into her third motivation, which Nancy calls her “subconscious desire to retaliate against her classmates.”
This is where I think it’s interesting to compare and contrast Corine with the franchise’s other high school senior evil genius with a penchant for blackmailing people, Jake Rogers.
Corine was smarter than Jake, in my opinion. Even if it took astute observation to stalk/observe his classmates enough to discover their secrets and intelligence to leave around a bunch of clues nudging along whoever he hoped would solve his murder and/or bring his classmates to justice, Jake ended up biting off more than he could chew and paid with it for his life. He also directly went to people and blackmailed them, while Corine hid behind her threats, and her two blackmail victims didn’t even know it was her blackmailing her, since she never directly approached them and always used a different email to contact them (contrasted with Jake, who directly approached people to blackmail them and, in the Remastered version, literally gave the professional criminals he was trying to blackmail his name and phone number…bit stupid there, Jake). Jake’s also described throughout both versions of Secrets Can Kill as lazy (most likely primarily academically, since works enough at his job at Maxines in the Remastered version to avoid getting fired). Compare him to Corine, who is swamped with work but is determined to graduate at the top of her class, and is very confident that she’ll get the scholarship (though she does make you do her homework on one occasion, so I guess she was lazy in that one instance and that was definitely cheating, though if we reported all the cheating going on in the game all of the valedictorians save Leela and Mel would be out of the race). Corine also survives the game (though with a ruined academic career and not much of a future) while Jake gets himself tossed down some stairs. I guess both are pretty bad and not ideal but…I don’t feel too bad for getting her expelled, since by the end of the game, she’d tried to kill two innocent people and deeply traumatized another person.
Oh yeah, she tried to kill two of her classmates. While an argument could be made whether or not she was intending to kill Megan or not, since Megan says she’s been to the hospital several times on account of her allergies and eventually recovered, she was CERTAINLY trying to kill Nancy/get Nancy killed in the endgame. Even Jake didn’t go that far.
In a way, Corine is also a lesson regarding the potentially negative consequences of bullying, because as you play the game, it is impossible to not pity her. She’s a bit awkward and lacks a filter, which she hastily tries to cover up, and she openly admits to being insecure. It’s also just depressing when talking to her about Izzy and, conversely, Izzy about Corine, because Izzy was just horrible and, in my opinion, one of the cruelest non-culprits in the franchise. But…wow, the hatred Corine ended up having for her classmates was alarming, and, as sympathetic her motivation was, by the end of the game, her actions were beyond justifying.
Another contrast: Jake is described by Hal to be a bully. Conversely, Corine was obviously being bullied and, unlike Jake, was NOT excluding herself by choice. The nicest emotion characters have is ambivalence towards her. Mel and Rachel/Kim aren't popular either, but they’re content with this, and thus are more respected by their classmates, unlike Corine. While Jake was a loner/outcast by choice, who didn’t seem to care that everyone hated him and was introverted to the point that in the Remastered version, his goal for the rest of his life was to literally move away from everyone and live in solitary luxury (sometimes I feel that, not gonna lie), Corine was very, very clearly lonely and wanted to belong, she wanted her reputation to improve, she wanted people to like her. But when she discovers through her research that the manuscript was hidden in the school, and that she REALLY wanted to find it and needed everyone gone in order to most efficiently do so, she realized this would be the perfect opportunity for revenge.
I don’t think we as a fandom recognize how twisted the things she did was, and how observant she must have been, and, like Jake, the technical accomplishments she’d have to do to carry out some of her sabotage (and she was planning on majoring in English, good on her for having some STEM knowledge, too, couldn’t relate…). She targeted people perfectly, and, while Megan’s allergies were and Danielle’s claustrophobia likely was common knowledge to everyone, she somehow (and I do mean somehow, since the game gives no explanation as to how she found out), discovered Rachel was, in fact, two different people. And she was patient, too--unlike Jake, who seemed to have immediately jumped into blackmail once he found out his classmates’ secrets, Corine discovered the twins’ secrets months before the start of the game, but then waited until she had something that the twins could do to her--be her backup, leave the notes, so that they could take the fall if something went wrong. Jake was kind of a chaotic evil since he didn’t seem to have a grand overall plan except “buy this island,” Corine’s blackmailing did tie into her grand scheme. She was more careful and methodical than he was.
And later, she successfully reformats Izzy’s hard drive to wipe away any trace of her essay. Maybe that’s common knowledge or easy to do or something, I wouldn’t know, I suck at tech-y stuff. But I certainly didn’t know how to do that as a high school senior. Though I think that’s more cruel than we realize, since, while Megan was rushed to a hospital but able to recover, Izzy had to watch a semesters worth of material get wiped away and be forced to realize that becoming the valedictorian was no longer possible. She likely couldn’t get any accommodations, since she wasn’t in the hospital like Megan. So…I doubt Izzy became valedictorian. (My personal headcanon is that Leela became valedictorian, but that’s a post for some other time, too).
Something that I think is interesting is that the people she targeted the most viciously--the twins, Danielle, and Megan--weren’t even her primary bullies, Izzy was. In fact, the twins were social outcasts themselves, and Megan hated Izzy, too. And don’t get me wrong, reformatting someone’s hard drive is a very malicious thing to do, as said above, but pales in comparison to trying to kill someone via spiking their food or taking advantage of someone’s fears to psychologically torture them. All of this was very opportunistic, and if you ask me, not necessarily an effort to target the people who had made her suffer the most, and was more of an effort to exercise control over people, and retaliate the social environment that had wronged her.
Corine has much more sympathetic motivations than Jake. While Jake’s ultimate goal was to buy an island and he was a bully himself, Corine was being bullied. I think part of us can all find something relatable in Corine if we’ve ever been mocked, excluded, or even bullied. And yet, by the end of the game, she completely lost her humanity and sunk to violent lows that, as I said, Jake never did. She tried to kill Megan and, at the end of the game, Nancy. I do believe that eventually, finding the manuscript while important to her, became less important, or at least, having control over the people that had treated her poorly, making them scared of her, rather than the other way around, and having their lives in their hands, became just as important, and why she was on a power high and willing to kill Nancy, who had treated her well throughout the game, in order to preserve her secrets. I feel like we don’t recognize how twisted the line, “You’re pretty smart. But are you smart enough to live to tell the tale? I don’t think so” is when it’s coming from a SEVENTEEN/EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL. Like Nancy/us are used to being threatened by middle-aged adults, but by a high school senior? Yikes.
Corine was proud of being the Black Cat; at the very beginning of the game, she’s the one who initially brings it up to Nancy. Now, she was bullying people, she had their lives, in Megan’s case, social and academic reputation, in Rachel and Kim’s case, and grades, in Izzy’s case, in her hands. And she would kill someone in order to keep that power and control over Waverly Academy. She’d find the manuscript, perhaps give it to the school, and destroy everyone else in order to become valedictorian, and show them exactly what she was capable of, despite the years of bullying and exclusion she’d suffered at their hands. But, like a lot of tragic villains, in my opinion, she had some morals--she never hurt Mel, who she considered to be the only person kind to her, her only true friend, since the plagiarism issue was likely orchestrated by Izzy, since there’s no indication Corine knew who Jacob was, and would have had little sway over him to frame Mel for plagiarism. And that kind of villain--one who does horrible, despicable things, but still has some sort of moral compass and feels like everyone around them deserves what’s happening to them, because they never did anything to help them when they needed it the most--that is a well-written villain.
Corine was an incredibly smart, calculated, cruel, yet tragic villain. She knew how to play her cards and should definitely be recognized as one of the best, most intelligent villains of the franchise.

Summer of 2006. I waited to take the trip to Philadelphia for a month to see Sleater-Kinney since my former ‘friend’ and fellow DJ D-Klein offered tickets for people to go with him. We had no idea who else would be playing up until then. With us was Elizabeth, D-Klein’’s friend and a huge Sleater-Kinney fan. And off we went to Philadelphia in a sweltering partly cloudy 95* day.
We travel through Coney Island when out of nowhere D-Klein and Elizabeth decide to stop at Astroland to ride the Cyclone. It put the trip on pause like a video game to take a spontaneous time out. But they enjoyed themselves, and why not? I wasn’t going to keep them.
We then drive through the Verrazano Bridge, then Staten Island and through New Jersey. I see all the industrial areas, petrol-storage facilities, the many rest stops, restaurants, and Sunocos lining the New Jersey Turnpike. Last time I checked, the Sunocos averaged no more than $3.05 a gallon. The music played nothing but, you guessed it, Sleater-Kinney, a taste to what to expect. So Olympian, so Kill Rock Stars. Also on the player was D-Klein spinning almost the ntire X-Ray Spex CD as well. We finally arrive in the Philadelphia outskirts at around 6:30 PM and shortly thereafter we cut through Chinatown. I didn’t know Philadelphia even had a Chinatown, but the three of us riding around assumed this was where we would go for some sushi.
Eventually we drive past the venue and see the young Philadelphia hipsters do nothing but stand in line waiting for the show to start and others walking the Philly streets towards the venue as well. We park in front of the bistros and tables and chairs set up on the sidewalks of Philly. At this point we still had no idea who else was playing other than Sleater-Kinney.
We choose Swanky Bubbles, a champagne and sushi bar. For a small eatery it was pretty neat with well-lit ambience and matching low-volume music to go with it. Me, D-Klein, and Elizabeth sit down and talk about the difference between the Philadelphia and Long Island punk scenes, some college student economics, party appearances, and other fine places to eat over our sushi dinner. We order between us wasabi mashed potatoes, a lychee drink, six spears of buttered asparagus salted with parmesan cheese, and sushi rolls such as California, Tuna, Philly, Spider Leg, Time Bomb, and Double Dragon (wasn’t that a video game?); and for dessert, a crispy Thailand banana split. $110.00 was the bill. Sold.
We walk back to the venue and the valet parking guy allowed us to park right in front of the entrance. It was now Club Polaris, formerly the Starlight Ballroom. We get there and find people with extra tickets to give away or sell. In the meantime, we hang out with the organizer of the venue. D-Klein was talking to him about the past shows of yester-years and decades ago. The promoter informs us that Clear Channel was trying to buy out both their venue and Philly scene. It’s depressing to think that Clear Channel would buy out the punk, indie-rock, and hardcore kids and tell them to fuck off so that Clear Channel can put their clean, polished, packaged industry acts in there, with no other outlets for these kids to go who call the streets their own. How we thought that pretty soon, the scene could implode with nowhere to go and be swallowed up into nothing. Where else would we go but further down?
It was when we stand in front of the Polaris waiting to get in that we heard music from inside the venue. We all finally find out to our surprise from the organizer the band was sharing the bill with Sleater-Kinney:
…The Roger Sisters.
Me and D-Klein were floored and it was then we knew that a great show was already going to become even greater.
We go in and this truly was the scene the magazines always talked about. Guys dressing hardcore, some moppy, some Napolean Dynamite cartoonish, and some slim t-shirts. The girls were pretty cute as well with their art-school haircuts, skirts, funny tees, piercings, and either Olympia-type or Williamsburg-type super-feminist style. Imagine makeoutclub ever having a meeting center.
Polaris was dark and crowded. All around us were many bars to get beer. There were many booths where kids sat around and mostly in groups drinking beers and water. (Remember, this was during a heat-wave. The Eastern board was hit with 90 degree-plus weather with lots of humidity). Some were quiet, arms crossed and minding their own. Others were very delighted to see each other and were greeted with hugs and kisses. We witnessed a couple of lesbians making out as well. And you had to give it to one fan who came to the show in a wheelchair.
The ballroom, as expected, was huge with lots of standing space. When the three of us got there, the front of the standing room was taken up but we managed to make our way about ten feet from the speakers, with a very lucky few who took a spot standing right under the vent. We had a good view to see the Rogers Sisters perform. Miyuki Furtado (bass / vocals) dedicated a song to Spiro Agnew, but took it back and later dedicated it to Condoleezza Rice. Jennifer Rogers (vocals / guitar) applied her lip gloss to prepare for the end of their set. Miyuki whipped himself around in a frenzy, performing sonic guitar tricks and creating feedback for all of us. We literally see the sweat and mist come off of his forehead. Laura Rogers (drums / vocals) whipped herself into a frenzy, too. The set lasted only 45 minutes but it was a good set. As we didn’t even know that the Rogers Sisters would play, it was no loss and all gain. Everyone wins.
The three of us hit the merchandise tables. I score Sleater-Kinney’s self-titled CD for $15.00 and I wanted to get some Rogers Sisters stuff but no one was at the tables yet. We sit around taking in all this humidity and heat observing the scene for a little bit more before we hit the merch- tables again where Miyuki and Laura finally set shop. A d.i.y. ethic. For $7.00 I grabbed three 7” singles from the Sisters who came off as very nice and gracious people. Elizabeth scores a Roger Sisters CD and matching Sleater-Kinney tees for her and her friend.
What hooked me to the Rogers Sisters was that I discovered them on WUSB’s Riot Grrrl Plus show in Summer 2003 and happened to record “I’m A Ballerina” on tape. And every chance I had I aimed to play them on the air. Why not? I figured people can be art-smart from getting into them. Bonus.
Sleater-Kinney finally came to play for a good 90 minutes. I believe D-Klein’s life has now culminated into this one night: he’s a huge fan who never had failed to play them on his show on a consistent basis (and he’s known to do that with Sonic Youth as well). Without him he wouldn’t have made this attempt to see them one last time.
One last time? Yes, Sleater-Kinney would finally call it quits after eleven years of making Kill Rock Stars a lot of money. This was their last tour and The Woods was their final record. They had to go out with style big time.
They came on and it was deafening. These ladies knew how to rock. Listen to the way they sound as theirs was rivaled by no other. Mid-set, Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker faced off and play their guitars towards each other and it was amazing. I was taken over. For 90 minutes I was trying to follow and absorb everything that Sleater-Kinney performed. Janet throws drumsticks and Carrie shakes out water bottles at the crowd to cool themdown. Fans screamed for them to keep going, not to go. They really loved this band that truly represented the indie-rock crowd and grrrls / femmes in general. One guy even ran on stage and urged the crowd to get ready to catch him up as he was about to stage-dive. He jumps off and instead lands on his feet. Sorry, Charlie. It’s not how it goes here at a Sleater-Kinney show.
After a while, they walk off-stage and fans just did not want to get it, so they stand there cheering and clapping heavily for five minutes more. And yes, they came back to play a few more songs, some off of The Woods. And that’s all she wrote in Philadelphia. An extended ovation as one-by-one Sleater-Kinney walks off-stage and acknowledge their fans with handshakes and smiles.
I don’t know about D-Klein or Elizabeth, but my head was about to explode. Throbbing. My entire body dripping of sweat, my shirt damp from the humidity. We leave Polaris and start driving home, a very exhausting three-hour drive compounded by listening to more Sleater-Kinney, X-Ray Spex and now The Rogers Sisters, taking home a still-pounding headache and wonderful memories from the last day of July that year.

Narnia media I would rather have than a Netflix adaptation of the series
Buddy cop movie starring Bree and Hwin as the overconfident/over-cautious cops, respectively
Rom com about Cor and Aravis. I’m thinking When Harry Met Sally vibes.
Sports movie about Corin fighting the Lapsed Bear of Stormness, complete with a training montage
A Rogers and Hammerstein-style musical about the Golden Age starring Lucy as the young, soprano ingenue. Edmund is the sensible bass-baritone and Peter is a tenor with a Gordon MacRae kind of voice. Susan gets a ballet number.
The life of Caspian as an epic tragedy equal parts Shakespeare and King Arthur. The scene where he confronts Drinian after Rilian goes missing will make you WEEP.
A lush 2D animated short depicting the creation of Narnia, the last sea in VDT, and/or night falling on Narnia. No words, just beautiful music and incredible hand-drawn animation.
A documentary about literally anything narrated by Puddleglum
A black and white, 30s-style swashbuckler starring Reepicheep
War movie about Digory’s WW1 service, with not-so-subtle parallels to Lewis’s own life.
Workplace mockumentary sitcom about a bunch of random gnomes working under the Lady of the Green Kirtle in the Underland
Polly’s excellent adventure around postwar Europe. Kind of a road trip feel. She wears some awesome 20s dresses, runs into Hemmingway at one point, and ends up publishing her first novel at the end.
A police procedural set during/after The Magician’s Nephew where some poor, beleaguered detective tries to figure out what was going on the day Jadis was in London. He interviews the Ketterleys’ housemaid at some point. He never actually gets any answers.
A melodramatic soap opera about Lasaraleen’s life in Tashbaan
A movie about the fall of Charn. Dark and atmospheric, with beautiful sets that loom over the actors. Should end right when Jadis says the deplorable word.
Something set Experiment House where Jill and Eustace showing their classmates how to live like Narnians. Very similar in tone to Dead Poet’s Society.
Political drama about Lord Bern cleaning up the Lone Islands in the years after Gumpus is ousted. Sort of an Aaron Sorkin feel.
Sitcom about Frank and Helen trying to figure out the whole ruling thing while the newly-created Narnians continue to be kinda clueless about things

currently wanting to cry thinking of din and corin calling each other my love :((( do they have any other pet names/nicknames for each other?
I think the 'ner kar'ta' will always be their special name for each other, but I also think if they get to grow old together they would add more names and nicknames as they grew even closer and more confident with each other/Corin learns to handle Din teasing him.
At first it would probably be the sweet and romantic kinds of names and the funnier and inside-joke-kinds would appear later on.
"Come on. Get a move on, Snow Streaker, or we're going to be late."

A Possessão de Deborah Logan
📷

Atuações me agradaram bastante.

Enfim, vale apena assistirem.
