25. proposal in front of the sea - levi ackerman.

It hasn't been a long time since the Survey Corps discovered the sea near the end of Wall Maria, and since then, it has been your personal spot to pass your free days. It didn't change when you and your captain, Levi, admitted the feelings for each other. You like bringing him to the beach as much as he loves coming with you, whenever he has time or free days. The summer was almost hitting its end as the sun while you walk towards the sands, hands tangled and a towel to share under Levi's arm as the sun disappears quietly under the ocean, giving a sweet golden color to the waves that break softly against the shore. The salty breeze hits you both as Levi extends the towel, sitting on top of it and palming the place by his side.

Even when autumn was about to start, the weather was still hot. That's why you two are wearing your summer clothes, without all the leather bands that tangle your body to the gear, but still the tight pants and the short-sleeved t-shirt that you still think that look too good on Levi for being part of a work uniform. It must be illegal to look that good.

He lets his head fall back, arms against the towel and hands supporting the weight of his body as he sighs. It's strange, and he doesn't know why, but he feels in peace. After all those years, all those things he has seen and he has done, after all that blood, those screams, those dead comrades. All the responsibilities, the training, the way he had fought for surviving while he was just a kid, nothing more than a 4-year-old orphan that only had an assassin as his source of parenthood. After losing every single important person on his life, from his best friends to his workmate and his most loyal team. He thought there wasn't anything more for him, that life has been a shit towards him and he only gets to suffer after all the blood he spilled.

But, you appeared.

It wasn't his thing, this about dating. About having someone waiting for his return. He never thought of it and, if the feeling of being alone ever crossed his mind, it was just to remind himself that he doesn't deserve anyone by his side. That, if he ever lets anyone in, they will die. As everyone has done before.

But you were almost like a dream. You were exactly all the things Levi has been waiting, no, hoping to find. He was so desperate for being cared for, for someone that cheered on him on every single battle he participated into, even on his own internal battles, those that no one could see. You just looked so ethereal he thought he was dreaming, a cruel reminder of the gods, as if they were telling him that no one would ever be by his side.

Luck – or maybe Hange – was on his side when you got admitted on his team, and then, the problem did nothing but keep growing. More, and more, and more. You... Always there to help, showing concern for him, even prepared homemade soup for him when he catch a cold. He didn't want to be unpleasant towards you, but he discovered he doesn't know how to act in front of you. His tongue twists when he talks and his eyes are unable to be on yours.

Even the rest of your team laughed that night, after seeing the most uncomfortable "thanks" coming from the Captain's mouth towards you.

"He seemed like he was about to bite his own tongue." Eren laughed.

"He was so blushed!" Sasha said. You just looked to the floor. You didn't want to say you found that incredibly cute and charming, and, as they kept talking, you felt a hand on your shoulder. Armin was smiling quietly at you, also away from the main conversation.

"I think you should try. I've never seen the Captain nervous and you have that effect on him. If you both like each other, why don't try to make the other happy?"

Armin was basically your best friend on there. He was the only one that knew all the things that happened to you during the fall of Shiganshina. Were you lost your family. Your friends. Your home.

You've felt so empty inside since then, unable to even form a basic bond with any of your workmates, as news kept coming from outside the walls and more and more falling soldiers got buried, and their names added to the list. You then knew you were a little coward. You didn't want to lose anyone else.

Your pasts were similar as the weight on your hearts was, and knowing that you both were risking the only safe piece of your hearts, you wouldn't mind to repeat it. Even if it scratches and breaks you, the happy memories you've made by his side are more than enough to bear with the loss.

You don't like to think about that, in any way. You care so deeply for him as he does for you, always searching the other on the battle, always sharing a hug so tender and full of love after the fight, sitting together and sharing your blankets while all of your team sits around the campfire, considering Paradis a little more safe. For the families still inside. To avoid your suffering to them.

Levi sighs again and you let your thoughts go with the breeze. He looked at your profile, as your eyes where still fixed on the golden waves. He sits near you, a strong arm around your waist as you let your head fall on his shoulder, with all the softness that he loves. You both remain silent. It's comfortable for you both to be like that, fighting your own demons by the other's side, as if you were floaters, helping the other to stand still against the darkness that try to drown you.

"It's been a time, isn't it?" he whispers. You know what he means by that. Flashbacks flood your mind. How his eyes were full of tears as he held your hand. How blood ran down his forehead. How weak you felt, and how weak he was. You thought you both would die on that battle, and it scares you how you were so desperate to find each other, to reach the end on the other's arms. You take his hand. "And we're both still here."

Destiny was good for you for once, letting you live, even when you had to stay for some nights at the hospital, with several titan wounds and bites. You recovered next to the other, hands holding between your beds. He even got scolded more than once for sleeping on your bed, searching your body and your heath, and making sure you're still there, with him.

"That day... I was more than ready to face even death for you." he whispers, tears almost falling down his eyes. He turns to look at you. "I wanted to make sure you would still live. For me." your eyes get teary as well. He takes a deep breath as he sits facing you. "My heart would easily let go yours if that mean that you would be happy and alive." his hands took yours, as tears were already running through both your faces. "And since they gave us the opportunity to build our life together." his hand searches something on his jacket. "I would like to ask you... If you want... To build it by my side. And marry me." his hand takes a shining ring out of his jacket, as your hand trembles.

The sun is still a golden shining against the sea as you nod towards him, while the ring slips down your finger. His lips guard the promise against yours, with the soft sounds of the sea behind you and the stars appearing on the summer sky, while happiness tears make the kiss taste like the ocean.
