Blog Post # 7: designing a system of poor relief

If you were designing a system of poor relief today, what would you copy from the American Poor Law and what would you leave out? Why?

I don't think I'm the right girl to design something like this, but if I have to, I would take the parts of the old American Poor Laws that were more caring. Like how a vast majority of town taxes went to poor aid and welfare, though I would also include schools and libraries and other public services in there like the newer systems. I would absolutely leave out the poor houses and the work houses, as I find the critics to be absolutely right, they were horribly inhumane. I would take the parts that had emergency medical care as part of poor relief that the old laws had, I think how American Healthcare works is abhorrent, how trips to the Emergency Room or Urgent Care can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars is awful.

As I've mentioned in a previous assignment, I hate the idea of judging "worthy" and "unworthy" poor. If someone needs help, they get help. But I'm not really sure how it would all come together, and I'm not sure how well these ideas would work. I just would want to help everyone if I had to build a system for poverty aid.

Sorry for a long absence (no posts since December 6th excluding the previous one?), I'm quite busy trying to finish all of outstanding tasks in college. Here's the one of them - my graphic design assignment (I'm not a designer tho). I had to create a character design according to the theme I've picked (random one in fact), write their history & then draw a logo for a fictional company with this character

Honestly speaking, me & my friends created this character quite fast, without deep dive into the topics we've picked (forests as the main topic, Canada as the sub-topic), but I must say that I didn't try to offend anyone,,,,,,,,, His name is Boreal tho, he's forest watcher. Very creative, I know, right? Drew him until 4 AM btw :,)
