ted lasso’s groundbreaking ending to their queer storylines with colin & trent … I honestly had to laugh a little.

- Colin and Michael kissing on the pitch and nobody saying anything? when the whole thing this season was him not wanting to come out to the world? are we expected to believe no one saw that & that didn’t have any real world repercussions? (not that I wanted to see any repercussions, but to have that be a public gesture was certainly a choice)

- Colin never getting a toy soldier from Ted.

- Colin never introducing Michael to the team as his boyfriend officially after the whole ‘wingman’ set up.

- Trent getting a throwaway line about ‘learning to accept parts of yourself’ or whatever.

- Trent never interacting with Colin again or meeting Michael? Despite most of his purpose this season being to gay mentor Colin? And the whole convo they had about Colin wanting to ‘kiss his fella’ after he wins a match?

- Trent still having zero backstory we actually saw in canon? Who did he come out twice to? An ex-wife? His mom? What’s his daughters name? What’s that situation? There was a pic of her on his desk but she was never addressed again after that throwaway line in Sunflowers

- Apparently he was wearing a wedding ring in the book signing scene but I’d have to go back and watch to confirm? So possibly maybe an implied husband somewhere in the background?

Not impressed. Not amused. Though I can’t say I’m surprised.

i know it's a small thing that literally doesn't matter at all but i often wonder why michael had a ticket under the name wynonna judd in the finale. could be there's no reason and it's literally just a callback to when ted had a ticket for roy under a fake name in s2 because he didn't want "folks messing with him." but if there is an in-universe reason, what would it be??

michael probably isn't a celebrity or any kind of widely well-known person, so he wouldn't need to use a fake name to prevent fans stalking him or something. unless he is famous on some level?? idk tho, i got the impression that he wasn't and that that's partly why colin started dating him, he didn't know about football and wasn't famous so there was no risk of colin being outed as they didn't run in the same social circles y'know? but anyway, colin is out to his team & coaches at this point and surely would've told them by the finale that he's dating michael, so it's not like he'd need to hide that he invited him (in any case even if he wasn't out or hadn't told people about their relationship he still wouldn't need to hide it because there'd be nothing weird/suspicious about getting a ticket for a friend). colin also seemed to know michael would be there as he's looking around the pitch when they're celebrating, clearly looking for michael, so it doesn't seem that michael used a fake name so he could surprise him.

maybe michael didn't want someone (like a friend/family member/coworker) to know he'd be at the match for some reason?? maybe someone in his life disapproves of his and colin's relationship so he didn't want them to find out he was going to be with colin or anywhere near colin, idk. or he didn't want them to know because then they'd start forcing him to come to more matches or watch matches on tv with them (the only ones he's willing to watch or go to are colin's matches). i also wondered if it was something to do with his job...like maybe he's a lawyer who has helped put away dangerous criminals so he doesn't want them to find out where he lives or where he's going. idk i think judging from his house (seen in 3x03) he definitely has a well-paying job so maybe there's people who are jealous of him, ex-clients or former employees who are mad at him, something like that. or it's none of these and it's literally just a funny callback and not that deep. i am still curious about it though.........

ted lasso really was the opposite of queerbaiting. they really said instead of having a pre-existing, intense, undefined relationship between 2 main characters and using the possibility of their future romance as a marketing tactic, we will:

out of nowhere, in the very last season,

reveal 2 side characters and a main character to be queer.

throw in a couple scenes of some good old-fashioned mlm and wlw kissing.

barely give the queer relationships any screen time that would get the audience actually invested.

break the sapphic couple up bc the lesbian is actually uncharacteristically victim-blamey and misogynistic for some reason. (lesbians can be toxic too, you guys.)

have the background queer couple kiss at the very end <3 bc gay rights <3

i genuinely think they said to themselves “gay people dislike queerbaiting… therefore… doing the opposite of queerbaiting… must be good representation, right?”

Ted Lasso is yet another perfect example of how straight people will actually write the most incredible queer stories accidentally and since they weren’t doing it on purpose it’s never actually mentioned or addressed and nothing ever actually comes of it

Like they can write a 😬 queer story on purpose (jackeeley) and they can write a ‘this one is for all you gays out there’ one where a side character has a coming out story and a 90% off screen romance (Colinmichael)

But the queer stories that are written into the fabric of what they’ve created? Those ones are just oopsie daisy coinky-dinks! Yes we had Roy and Jamie ride a bike together with romantic lyrics playing under them after we’ve developed them from enemies to friends to ??? for three seasons, no that wasn’t supposed to be romantic!!

Learning how much all of the queer subtext and text was just accidental is the rude awakening I needed to remember that unless the straights sit down and think “this one is going to be gay (and therefore undeniably obvious/stated outright)” it will always be straight, and I need to stop tricking myself into believing otherwise, even as a joke.

First off, the serotonin you two anons are giving me is insane, this is such a nice ask and I am very happy rn. Thank you for actively inviting me to discuss my hyperfixation.

So most of my thoughts are compiled in the aforementioned anon post, but I have more so here you go:

Since you mentioned Colin's arc, there's something I've noticed. Ever since Colin has been canonicalized as queer, and even before when people simply headcanoned him as queer, his entire arc and history has been pretty much erased. He's not just this closeted guy on the team. He was a dick to Nate for the most of s1 and maybe even some of s2, but then had an uno reverse card pulled on him and got bullied. His character was developed throughout the seasons, especially when Jamie left. He began to change and stopped being Isaac's cocky right hand man. This is something most people forget as he progresses, something I think we need to remember simply because it's a part of his character.

I think that when Isaac and Jamie find out Colin and Michael are dating they will not let Colin forget Michael's height. Isaac definitely makes fun of Colin's height even though he's the same height as Jamie, so for him to be dating a man smaller than him? Instant comedy.

As for bisexual Jamie... firstly, just look at that man. Singular dangly earring. Ridiculous sitting positions. Eyebrow slits. Istg if he turns up one day with black nail polish I'm gonna throw something at my computer. But also, I think he doesn't really understand attraction to men. Obviously, with a dad like that, he has his fair share of toxic masculinity hurting his chances of coming to terms with any kind of sexuality. But I feel like sometimes, maybe as a kid or maybe as an adult, he'll look at a man and feel something and immediately go "Nope this is jealousy I am jealous nope nope nope". Also he definitely had a crush on Roy as a kid. But I'm not to sure about Jamie x Roy in the present. They strike me as more big brother/little brother vibes, but I can definitely see where the shippers are coming from.

And since we're talking about gay Ted Lasso - Barbara 100% has a crush on Rebecca. It's just a fact. She has a crush on her. Maybe that will segway into bisexual Keely being brought back because even though it's already canon no one talks about it.

Actually, I'm going to touch on that as well. Keely is canonically bisexual. Colin wasn't the first queer character - Keely was. "If I'm going to dip my toes back into the lady pool, I can't think of a better body of water to do it with than you." I know it was played off as a joke but it's still canon. I'll actually be quite disappointed if they don't revisit that because the GA has completely ignored it. Keely. Jones. Is. Bisexual. This is a fact.

Okay I've once again diverged from the plot of the ask so I'll steer it back with a theory (kinda). I mentioned this briefly in a post but I really want Colin to stand up against Isaac and the team's comments. Nothing much, just "That's rude". And when Isaac jokes about if Colin's gay, he just says "Yeah. I am. And I want you to stop it". He needs to address the things he said to stay in the closet and I'd love it to be like that.

I actually wrote a random fluff oneshot for Colin coming out. I still think he'll be outed, but I'd love for him to have some control before that happens.
