Clozemaster Pro-Tip:

Might do a long post on how much I like this app (esp as an anki-disliker), but what people NEED to know is that the radio mode is great but you have to unselect 90% of the English voice options because they sound so cursed. I don’t know why they have a death rattle option, but it is absolutely frightening. Save yourself the nightmare when thinking of falling asleep while studying and turn! them! off!

Okay do people normally use the term 参加 in the context of "attending" a funeral?

Because I've only ever seen it before when referring to participating in a sports match or attending a birthday party.

1st half of January

This month I decided to learn french and get back into korean. This is how it's going!

French

French was pretty easy to begin, I began with doing 1 week of the Language Transfer course and after that I began with duolingo (14 days already!). I haven't continue with the Language transfer course but I want to get back into it since it was very easy to understand for me.

Korean

Korean is a bit more difficult. Last year I studied korean for a couple months and then got so overwhelmed to the point that I stopped learning all together. It is a shame since it was my hobbie and something that I found genuinely fun, but after that I had a really rough time getting back into studying it. For now, I began Clozemaster to remember all the vocabulary I forgot, and I plan to keep at it for a while.

My Study Plan for the rest of the month

Duolingo for practicing french everyday

10 new words in Clozemaster daily

5 French Language Transfer lessons (no lessons on weekends)

Goals

My only goals right now are to finish the 100 most common korean words on Clozemaster and the Introduction to French Language Transfer course. None of these have a time limit it could be this month or the next, I just want to be able to finish them both

I'm not going to rush through this, it's always better to do a little bit everyday than a lot every so often. I'm trying to create habits right now, that's what is important to me at the time being.

I thought I'd show off the Clozemaster improvements.

Below is an example of a japanese/chinese conjugate where the same characters mean effort in both cases.

I can click to expand the sentence explanations. Or I can click into the words to get details about the Japanese Kanji, word, origins (and explanation of grammar if it's a verb), and scroll up or down to see the chinese explanation (or in some cases the Korean one if it's also a word in korean). So this new click-words feature is a nice way to dig into background on words, and in multiple languages if you're studying a multiple with characters. The non highlighted words can also be clicked on for explanations which is cool.

curious if anyone learning chinese has used Clozemaster - and if so, how are you finding it?

as soon as i saw the chatgpt generated explainations, alarm bells went off! I don't know if I'm letting my chatgpt/AI sceptic mindset cloud my judgement but not super convinced by the accuracy of it...

So while a lot of canto resources presume that the learner has some familiarity with Mandarin, I can't find Anything that has a spaced repetition-like course (like an Anki deck) for canto-specific expressions, especially ones that don't use characters coined specifically for canto (e.g. 因住 as "to look out for" or 夾硬 as "to force oneself") which is just, really bizarre to me?

I have finally, after almost two years of focusing solely on Greek, completed the Greek Duolingo tree except for legendary. Unfortunately gaining legendary on everything will cost like a million gems. Also unfortunately, no other free and useable app tends to have Greek as an option. So that’s fun.
