7. Florist AU & 16. Prison AU

Given that I am in fact not actually writing this I make no apologies for the fact that I'm approaching this with zero knowledge of the US or UK prison systems and only the AoNZ prison system lol.

Okay. So we have Henry, coming close to the end of his sentence, has very much kept himself apart from everyone due to his upper-middle-class sensibilities re: The Types Of People Who Go To Prison even though he himself is A Type Of People Who Goes To Prison. But towards the end of his sentence Because Reasons he starts working in the horticulture department where he—of course—meets Alex. And of course there's the instant attraction, and they're working closely together, and Henry soon realises that Alex knows a TON about flower language etc. He finds out it's because June got really into it at one point, and then there's a lot of bonding over sisters, falling in love, etc etc. Right before Henry's sentence is up, though, he puts his foot in his mouth in a pretty major way, says something pretty out of touch and massively pisses Alex off, and doesn't get a chance to apologise before his release.

Cut to, like, a year later. Because ?reasons? Henry is looking for a bouquet of flowers for... idk his mum or Bea or someone and he walks into a little boutiquey flower shop to find Alex behind the counter. And, like, the first thing Henry does is apologise because he's spent the last twelve months trying to navigate a post-prison life and learning the hard way just how fucked up and stacked against true rehabilitation the whole system is. And... they fall in love ii: electric boogaloo. Love confessions via flowers, probably.

hello! :)

favorite thing about fandom...absolutely the people. i have made so many lovely friends over the last 13 years on this hellsite. folks in fandom are so so so talented...I learn so much from y'all and it makes me grow into a better person both creatively and personally/emotionally. My background/career is in DEI and psych, and I've always been so invested in fostering community and love and care in all the spaces I've inhabited, virtual or otherwise.

because of the people, fandom is such a wonderful space for all types of growth and relationship building!! keeps me sane and well. :) I love that I get to try new things (writing, for one) and turn to amazing people for support and guidance in a safe space. dulls the sting that comes with a fear of failure.

Hello, fellow disaster! I, personally, am a disaster because I'm asking this on Monday, rather than on Nice Ask day, but... What's something you do to reset when you've kind of reached your limit? Whether with work or social interaction or anything at all - what's your go-to relaxation reset???

Oh no, Nice Ask Day extending out into Nice Ask Week, what a tragedy for all of us. ❤️

Anyway, I completely forgot what my blog title was set to, and I read this message and was like "well I've only interacted directly with ccf a few times so far but I'm impressed by how thoroughly she has the measure of me, honestly" and then I remembered my blog name and now I'm marginally less impressed, sorry.

So there's the short-term answer and the long-term answer, or I guess the "I've reached my limit for right now" answer and the "Okay, I'm fully drowning" limit.

So. I'm a bit people'd out? One of my clients has been pissing me off? My dog's anxiety is playing up and he's been barking at every-fucking-thing all day? I am a Bath Bitch. When I was renting, I always did my level best to make sure I was living somewhere with a bath; once I became a homeowner, it became a requirement—twenty years of severe endometriosis/PCOS goes a long way to hammering home the virtues of a bathtub, but after yeeting my uterus last year they're a pure indulgence. I'm talking bubbles and candles and, like, two hours just soaking in the tub with a book (or fic).

But my major relaxation reset is driving. Properly driving, not city driving. When I'm on my own, I blast the absolute shit out of my driving playlist; when I have passengers, I usually crank it down just enough for conversation. But, yeah. There's a psychological root to this I won't bore y'all with, but driving is the one time I feel truly free and in control of my life (even flying isn't quite the same—probably because I have to concentrate on what I'm doing a little more lmao—although getting up in one of the open cockpit planes is pretty close) and I've definitely been known to just, like... get in the car and jump on the motorway out of town and back again if I'm truly spinning out. I'm gonna be back in the States in a few weeks for the first time since Covid kicked off and I cannot express how deeply I'm looking forward to hitting the open road, even if I will be on the wrong side of the car—the States does motorways much better than we do, and I'm not in the best place mental health-wise at the moment. (You know it's bad when I'm looking forward to being on the 5 again 😂)

look, an interesting question. @kiwiana-writes has very recently introduced me to the most intriguing little demon birds i've ever seen (the kea). apparently, they can pick locks! i didn't know they existed until today, and now i am one part terrified, one part absolutely enthralled. i'm not sure i'd choose them as my one pet, but i'm definitely considering it.

side note, apparently they make friends by attacking each other! wish it could be me.

i've also become very obsessed with kiwi birds who - unbeknownst to me - scream like a banshee despite their very cute packaging! what a lovely surprise!

I do very firmly and genuinely believe that everyone should be able to write what they want to write, and I will Simply Not Vibe With Everything and that’s okay! I’ve been fandoming for a lot longer than tags/filters/etc have been easily used, so I’m pretty liberal with my use of the back button when something isn’t for me 😅

BUT this is an author ask game, so my number one pet peeve AS AN AUTHOR is people kink shaming in my comment section. I pretty liberally delete comments of this nature these days, because I don’t ever want someone who is specifically seeking out a particular type of content that I write to read the comments and wind up feeling bad about themselves. I tag the absolute shit out of my kink both so those who want to avoid things can avoid them AND so people who want to seek things out can seek them out. The characters might be fictional, but the thoughts and feelings and scenarios are very real, and respecting that is really important to me ❤️

@heybuddy-drabbles: a 911 Lone Star!AU very angsty but with a happy ending. Alex going through grief felt really fucking relatable. It's also spicy in contrast with the angst.

@dot524: This firefighter AU is one of my favorite RWRB fics ever, and I’m glad I was able to follow it from WIP status to complete this month. Alex as a firefighter is irresistible (Henry thinks so too) and somehow these two feel so true to character even in a completely different context. There are so many fun scenes here - riding a bull, an airport scene, shenanigans at a fire station, sentimental piano playing - but none of them are forced. Truly a wonderful fic that I know I’ll be returning to again and again.

@wilmonsfolklore: seconding this one so so so much!! read it in one sitting and have been thinking about it ever since then. there are so many heartfelt and sweet conversations in it. everyone's so true to their character in such a different situation. can not recommend it enough
