the issue with watcher trying to adopt the dropout format is that they are not focusing on long story-based shows (like dimension 20) that people will come back again and again to see & will likely watch every season of, are seemingly just ceasing to release anything on youtube (instead of releasing censored or limited versions like dropout does, which boosts engagement and allows more people to see their content) and don't have a lot of fan engagement with their paywalled content as it is. idk that this is gonna fix the problem besties. people cannot pay for this shit and frankly i'm not gonna pay $6 a month for a ghost hunting show i put on in the background while i play minecraft bc it's mildly funny and has familiar voices in it. they're also not easing into this transition at all they are simply just suddenly doing this which is...not gonna bode well!!!

their shows are also, not gonna lie, not super innovative in the same way that dropout is. "ghost hunting show but we have one guy who kinda doesn't believe it and one guy who kinda does" isn't spectacularly new. neither is "vaguely educational history show with puppets." what they're failing to understand is that the main draw for their audience either has to be strong and bold show concepts (like game changer) or strong and bold personalities (like in dimension 20). right now they are focusing middle of the road with both and aren't branching out a ton with the talent they're including (which i think was one of the reasons puppet history was so popular! they had so many interesting people on there, but have not done the same for subsequent seasons of most other shows which is why they start to feel stale, or have done this with shows that are extremely low quality concept like top 5 beatdown). all in all does not seem like it will work but for their sake i hope they surprise me

Really loving this series so far!

Been a long time since I thought a "cool protagonist" was actually cool. Love how important their blue eyes are to their character and plot. A bit of Japanese history that I don't see often talked about.

I enjoy all the characters; dialogue is both witty and heartfelt. Animation is S-tier with great fight choreography. The lone samurai seaking revenge trope as existed as long as samurai have existed but the anime brings more to the table and its refreshing instead of the same ol' stale sake given to prostitutes.

love that you can tell immediately if homestuck fanart is from 2013 or more recent based on a sliding scale of how fat and race diverse the characters are. every 2013 fanart makes everyone skinny animecoded and twinkifies the boys but recent fanart is so much more fun & endearing

tim burton tends to piss me off because the extent of his understanding of The Other, despite many of his films centering it, is entirely limited to his experience as a slightly edgy middle class suburban white man. his characters are often, aside from their stylized appearance, entirely normal and only barely able to be categorized as the Other by whatever single strange trait they have that’s driving the conflict. all style no substance

every time i think about dan and phil becoming the internet’s go-to example of the Dangers of Shipping Real People it makes me so exhausted. for their entire fourteen year career together they have encouraged people to write fic about them and draw fanart and generally “be creative” as they always phrase it. dan specifically, outside of 2012/2013 when he was aggressive towards fans pestering him about it, at one point said he likes reading fic and that he’s often surprised about how good they can be. hell, they wrote fanfic of themselves in their own published book and hired a popular fanartist to illustrate a manga of them.

and then dan came out. and in his video he mentioned how stressful it was to suddenly blow up and have a bunch of people speculating about his relationship, and how it triggered him due to his trauma from being heavily bullied in school. and then followed up the segment talking about how past that point the fans’ support was actually very healing for him, and hearing people tell him that he had helped them be comfortable with who they were without him even being out was one of the things that made him confident in coming out in the first place.

but the people who write angry posts about the evils of rpf or whatever don’t care about dan and phil’s actual opinions. they saw or heard about how annoying the fans were, heard along a thousand-step telephone game that dan and phil hate their fans, and have now christened them the platonic ideal of creators whose lives were ruined because of shippers. it’s ridiculous. it’s unfounded. and it’s disrespectful to the actual existence of the people they’re propping up to support their argument
