Massive cottage core vibes with this one. He is very taken by the idea of not being regarded as a killing machine. Immediately busies himself with the task of decorating your shared home.
Just take this man away. Elope to mountains and save him (hermit begs you).
Wedding planning is another demon. He debates every single decision. Asking you about your preference between white gardenias or white peonies. (You love him and he is too sweet for you to say out loud that you for the end of the world cannot distinguish the flowers)
He creates elaborate flowcharts to compare the pros and cons of different cake flavors, or insists on stress-testing the honeymoon resort's structural integrity with a cursed technique (much to the staff's bewilderment).
Let's not even get into Gojo's best man speech. No one really recovered from that.
DIY projects are his shit. Renovating a raggedy old dresser into a vintage masterpiece is where his magic lies. Let this man cook.

He is your Disney princess that rushes out to refill the bird feeder with the first rays of Sun, hums pleasantly at the sight of a perfectly baked batch of cookies, or paints the most delightful sceneries on your ceilings.
Geto Suguru was made to create. He loves the fresh scent of sheets, experimenting with new flavors of tea, or going down the path of BookTok with Faerie romances much to your astonishment.
It isn't long before, you both end up adopting teeny tiny twins from the local orphanage. Suguru's darling girls he spends his life nurturing.
He took to fatherhood with the same surprising zeal he brought to everything else. His days were filled with braiding tiny pigtails, reading bedtime stories with dramatic voice inflections (complete with a surprisingly convincing rendition of a grumpy troll), and building elaborate pillow forts that rivaled any jujutsu barrier.
And on nights when dreams of a different reality kept him away, you held his hand in yours. Calling your girls for a family sleepover in the living room. That was all it took to whisk the sadness away from your beloved's eyes.

Hey bestie any zutara fic recs. I feel like I’ve read all the classics.
Hello anon! Oh boy have you come to the right place because I have read several million words of these two dorks falling in love and though I plan to read several million more, I am always down to screech about talented fanfic writers!!! Here are most of my faves, some of which you’ve probably read but my enthusiasm simply needs an outlet. No WIPs to minimize heartbreak.
In the spirit of not recommending too many classics, I’m not including anything from the first page of the Katara/Zuko tag on AO3 sorted by kudos, with one exception. Same rule does not apply to FF.net because nobody visits that site anymore, yet we mustn’t forget our roots!!!

Long fics / series: 
Half Asleep, by crushinator | Rating: T | Word Count: 82,335
Summary: Five years after the Hundred-Year War, Fire Lord Zuko is hit with an assassin's dart, and falls into a coma from which he cannot wake. A week passes, and his prognosis is grim. But Katara could swear she hears him in her dreams.
My thoughts: this fic, in many ways, is novel quality. The pacing? Immaculate. The action scenes? Exciting and interesting yet super easy to visualize. The characterization? On point. Katara is peak Miyazaki heroine in this, setting out on a quest to the Spirit World to save her boy (who’s not really her boy) from whichever Eldritch horror has him in its clutches. I love the little glimpses we have of the mutual pining between Katara and Zuko, and there are no words to describe how much I love the resolution of Katara and Aang’s relationship in this story. And oh boy, is the climax of the fic super romantic. This is just a really well written, emotionally compelling, tight fic. Deserves to be a fandom classic. 
Southern Lights, by colourwhirled | Rating: M | Word Count: 769,274
Summary: A world where the Avatar has disappeared from memory. Where Sozin’s Conquest was successful. Where the unsteady order of the empire is threatened as members of the royal family are picked off one by one and lines are slowly drawn in the sand One last chance for peace forces an unlikely alliance between a homesick waterbender, a carefree Air Nomad, a runaway Earth Kingdom heiress, and the fire lord's inscrutable son. Together they must learn to shed old enmities and become the balance they seek to restore to the world.

My thoughts: Is it a Bildungsroman? Is it a war story? Is it a politics story? Is it a love story? Is it a friendship story? Is it a story about colonial violence and well-meaning complicity and finding justice in a world where it simply doesn’t seem to exist? Yes to all of the above, because at 700k+ words YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL. You know how Virginia Woolf once said that Middlemarch is one of the few novels written for grownups? Well, Southern Lights feels adult, not because of violence or sex or general grimness (looking at you, HBO), but because it’s fundamentally about having the courage to make choices, live with the consequences, and make more choices, and repeat that over and over again. If Katara is a Miyazaki heroine in Half Asleep, she is full on Daenarys (pre-character assassination) in Southern Lights, a heroine who gets put through her paces yet retains her unwavering resilience to find her place in the world. Katara can be pretty frustrating in this and I know a lot of the commenters on this fic wanted to smack her up the head halfway through, but I support women’s rights and women’s wrongs and her decisions make sense to me even when I also want to smack her for them, and isn’t that a symptom of good writing? I count my lucky stars that I joined the ATLA fandom after this fic is finished (which was only last year!) because I got to binge it in a few days and I have not been the same person since. Deserves classic status. 
Refraction, by caroe3725 | Rating: E | Word Count: 215,249
Summary: Making choices after the war was supposed to be the easy part. Her future decided and neatly packaged based on what everyone else wanted for her, what she should want, too. But Katara’s destiny had a funny way of being exactly what she wanted to run from. (As if anyone needed another Zutara post-finale slow burn after 15 years.)
My thoughts: YES WE DEFINITELY NEEDED ANOTHER POST-WAR ZK SLOWBURN OF SUCH IMMACULATE QUALITY. Both Katara and Zuko’s internal monologues are excellent in this, but I particularly love Zuko’s. The writer is so good at capturing his resolve, his earnestness, and his awkwardness. This is a very restrained fic — no great histrionics — but also incredibly romantic. The first kiss scene made me want to both sigh and screech. I’m also just a huge sucker for “Katara learns politics” which this fic has in spades, with a bonus of very thoughtful gender dynamics. Anyway, if you liked AJ Lenoire’s The Summit or andromeda13’s such selfish prayers, you’d probably like Refraction. Zuko and Katara are very much dumb teens in the beginning portions of this fic, which I personally like because it makes me nostalgic. Oh, and Katara is low key chaotic good in this, which is super in-character and hilarious.
Stormbenders, by Fandomme | Rating: T | Word Count: 171,000+ 
Summary: S3 AU from FBM. Deep in the Fire Nation jungle, the Gaang meets a group of rogue water ninja who send Zuko and Katara on a mission to retrieve Ozai's secret battle plans.
My thoughts: I’m aware that if you asked the average ZK shipper ten years ago what the ship classics are, the answers are probably Stormbenders, His Majesty Prefers Blue, and the Sparrowkeet series. The other classics are good (classics for a reason!), but Stormbenders remains my favourite. It’s funny. It’s exciting. It’s WELL PACED. The ZK relationship grows so organically, which is a huge feat considering this fic was started before we even got The Southern Raiders. The events are a little more adult than the show, but the tone remains very ATLA. There’s a lovely little animatic of the beginning of the scene on YouTube to show you exactly what I mean about the tone and the humour. I am always weak for a well-structured adventure romance, and Stormbenders stands the test of time because it’s just such a well-written fic. 
The Undying Fire, by Boogum | Rating: T | Word Count: 534,665
Summary: "He has the eyes, Princess Ursa." They were half-forgotten words, a whisper of fears never explained. Zuko had dismissed it all as nothing to worry about—until he somehow healed the Avatar. Fire healers weren't meant to exist, except he did. He'd saved the kid's life. Naturally, he wanted answers. Too bad finding them wasn't so simple...
My thoughts: This fic is mostly Gen, and Zutara shows up in the latter half of the series. Despite being a ZK shipper I like plenty of Gen fics too, and The Undying Fire gives me the best of both worlds. I love the world building, the humour, and the slow ramp up of the Gaang friendships. I absolutely love how the canon divergence is so subtle at first and gradually unfurls into something super different, yet retains much of its ATLA charm. Boogum’s written some other bangers too, and I have to give honorable mention to Zuko’s Tiny Dilemma (where a spirit transforms ponytail Zuko into his six-year-old self, and Uncle into a teapot, and somehow it becomes an emotionally compelling 100k word saga) and Following Blue (season 2 canon divergent Bluetara with a bigger focus on romance). 
Katara Alone & associated fics by cablesscutie | Rating: T | Word Count: 86,890
Summary: The war is over, and with it goes the only life she has ever known. In this era of love and peace, the world is becoming new, and Katara is unsure of her place in it. That's okay though. Katara has rebuilt her life from scratch before, and she will do it again.
My thoughts: I love post-war “Katara sets out to find herself and also finds Zuko” fics. Katara Alone is a fabulous coming-of-age story with some good old fashioned letter flirting during Katara’s solo travels. The sequel, Lady of the Tides, has some very thoughtful depictions of Katara’s place within the post-war Fire Nation, and the accompanying story from Zuko’s POV, The Fire Lord at Home, hits all my buttons. Like…Zuko is Fire Lord Good Boy! He passes legislation! There is political optimism! Swoon. 
Another Word for Alchemy, by FanPanda 13 | Rating: T | Word Count: 108,000+ 
Summary: Five years have passed since the Avatar defeated Fire Lord Ozai, and the members of the Gaang have all gone in their own direction. But when Aang invites them all to a Peace Summit at the North Pole and tells them of his new project, for which he will need their support, the group comes together again for adventure, fun and romance. AU. Zutara. COMPLETE.
My thoughts: Now this is a fic that thoroughly crept up on me. The first 3/4 is good old fashioned fluffy, funny, fourth wall-breaking Gaang shenanigans with plenty of Zutara. But the last quarter? Oh boy does it come right at you and slam you in the solar plexus with the platonic love and found family feels and the complexities of those feelings when you’re a teenager. The impact of Aang’s loss of the Air Nomads is treated very thoughtfully here, way more so than in the show. 
The Slow Path, by TazmainianDevil | Rating: T | Word Count: 125,723 
Summary: Eight years after the fall of Ozai, Aang returns to the friends he left behind.
My thoughts: This is actually a Taang story with a great ZK subplot. But what I love about it is that the whole Gaang (including Suki ALWAYS INCLUDING SUKI) is superbly characterized. The ZK banter is top notch. I could actually hear their voices in my head in some of the scenes. Their relationship is playful but has plenty of emotional heft. And the plot is exciting and well-developed. My favourite thing, though, is how the author treats Toph’s POV: it’s very thoughtfully written, with consideration towards how she perceives the world.
Simple Misunderstanding, by ShamelessLiar | Rating: T | Word Count: 80,965 
Summary: Katara was captured by Zuko, but there was a lapse in communication. Takes place after The Fortuneteller. Fierce Katara, honorable Zuko, and meddlesome Iroh. Also, music night
My thoughts: Generally I don’t love fics where Katara gets captured, especially by Zuko (just a personal preference, not here to judge). But! I love this one, because…well, the circumstances of Katara’s capture by Ponytail Zuko are simply hilarious. Katara is suspicious and stubborn; Zuko has a one-track mind and doesn’t understand why Iroh is treating his prisoner so nicely; oh, and Aang gets into an amazing side quest with some spiritual animals. The only thing about this story is that it ends a little abruptly since the author was considering a sequel, but it still reads as a standalone fic. The author also wrote His Majesty Prefers Blue and Call Me Katto, two ZK classics, but Simple Misunderstanding is far and away my favourite work. 
Clothe Me in Seasons, Dress Me in Snow, by sadladybug | Rating: T | Word Count: 62,026
Summary: It is not the memorial she deserves, nor the one she would want. But it can't be helped. He owns no property in the other nations, and he needed to keep her close. Closer than she was in life, anyway. Zuko's reflections on a life lived and a life that could have been.
Review: sadladybug lives up to the username by creating a sadness so contagious that I have yet to recover from it, and I cope by recommending this fic to other Zutara shippers so that more may suffer like I did. (Stop the cycle? No.) Look — I think there’s something extremely beautiful and poetic about a love that changes in nature and form and expression, but not in intensity and devotion, and that’s what this fic is about. Loved it. Never reading it again. 
One shots: 
There’s a category of canon-compliant Zutara one-shots that are all extremely painful, and I cannot get enough of them: in the next life by we-were-angels, taking place right before Katara’s wedding to Aang; water can heal, water can break by crazyache, about why Katara didn’t attend Yakone’s trial. 
To combat the above, here’s a few funny, fluffy ones that make me cackle: i am older now by ama (who wrote the banger that is The Blackfish and the Dragon), an old!ZK fic that I read to counteract the emotional damage inflicted by psychedelic_aya’s we hold our hearts in silence; all good things start with tea by yodalorian, where Zuko’s hapless Disney sidekick-esque advisors try to get him a wife; And Half at One Another’s Throats by songofhopeandhonor (whose account is deleted), about Zuko’s harebrained proposals to Katara; The Dragon of the West’s Guide to Flirting by bluesunflower44, which is exactly what it says on the tin and the awkward disaster you’d expect. Waiting on a Steady Sun, by nire, is a long version of my favourite tropes: fake marriage + idiots to lovers ft. pining for your spouse. 
I generally don’t love modern AUs, but akaiiko’s talk is cheap (and i’ve got expensive taste), where Katara meets Zuko at a frat party, is a whole damn delight; my old aches become new again by jamesstruttingpotter is a wonderfully indulgent modern AU based on Our Beloved Summer. 
And finally, some season 3 character studies: don’t tell me how to feel by paintingcranes, ft Katara at the Western Air Temple being increasingly incensed at both Zuko trying to be helpful and how other people react to his helpfulness; the other side of mercy by crazyache, where Sokka calls Katara “high-strung and crazy” and that really makes Zuko think; The Silent Garden by romilley (whose WIP The Horizon is also fabulous), where Katara and Zuko avoid their feelings through a reluctant-allies-with-benefits arrangement (ft a way of depicting intimacy and sex that makes me think of Normal People); a deep delight of the blood by eruthros, where Zuko asks Katara to practice bloodbending on him out of pragmatism but also a little bit of guilt (it’s unrated, but that “Kink Without Sex” tag is there for a reason).

Summary: A bustling airport lounge had Mycroft contemplating the future and what his life could become with you.

Prompt: Airport. Seeing them with kids/baby. Making you taste test. “You know you’re stuck with me, right?”
A/N: This is the penultimate part of my Build-A-Festive-Fics so thank you to the utterly brilliant @anonymoussherlockandmarvelgeek who put these prompts together for the lovely Mr Holmes. This can be seen as a second part to my first Build-A-Festive-Fic is you like.

Another year, another airport. There were times Mycroft wondered if it wouldn’t be more economical to invest in a private jet. The airport lounge at Christmas was a festive oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of holiday travel. As travellers awaited their flights, the lounge became a haven of seasonal cheer and comfort. Twinkling lights adorn every available surface, casting a warm and inviting glow throughout the space. Garlands of pine and red ribbon drape elegantly over counters and railings, infusing the air with the nostalgic scent of Christmas.
A towering Christmas tree, adorned with an eclectic mix of ornaments, took centre stage, its branches sparkling with lights and reflecting the colours of the season. Beneath the tree, carefully wrapped presents create a sense of anticipation, adding to the overall festive ambiance. Soft instrumental renditions of classic holiday tunes play in the background, creating a melodic backdrop that adds to the joyful atmosphere.
Mycroft lingered by the bar, a gentle smile gracing his lips as he observed you near the resplendent Christmas tree. You stood with a small girl in your arms, enthusiastically pointing out the various types of decorations that adorned its branches. There was a warmth in your interactions that tugged at his heart, an ache that had become all too familiar in recent times. The sight of you with the child painted a poignant picture of familial bliss, a scene that both touched and unsettled him in equal measure.
Sherlock's deep voice sliced through Mycroft's contemplative silence, injecting a note of teasing smugness. "Thinking about the future, brother mine?"
"I was simply observing," Mycroft replied, his tone steady, though a subtle softness lingered beneath his composed exterior.
Sherlock, ever perceptive, leaned into the banter. "Observing the love of your life holding a small child and absolutely not wondering about what that might look like if you had one of your own."
Mycroft's lips tightened imperceptibly, a flicker of irritation crossing his otherwise impassive features. "It had not even crossed my mind," he declared with a carefully measured hum, attempting to deflect the conversation away from the unspoken thoughts that lingered in the recesses of his mind. Yet, a keen observer might catch the hint of vulnerability in his eyes, betraying the depth of emotion stirred by the scene before him.
In the quiet recesses of his mind, Mycroft found himself entertaining the notion of what life might be like with a little one in tow. The prospect of sharing knowledge, moulding a young mind, and experiencing the unpredictable chaos that parenthood promised had begun to weave itself into the fabric of his contemplations. An unexpected warmth enveloped him at the mental image of guiding a curious mind through life's intricacies, embracing the potential chaos as a welcomed disruption to his meticulously ordered existence.
Despite these musings, Mycroft had yet to broach the subject with you. The various paths to parenthood lingered unspoken, a myriad of possibilities silently contemplated but carefully kept in the realm of his private reflections. Whether through traditional means, adoption, or other avenues, the desire for a family remained a quietly nurtured aspiration within Mycroft's heart.
Sherlock chuckled knowingly, taking a sip of his drink. "You may fool the entire everyone else, brother, but you can't fool me. You're a romantic at heart, even if you hide it beneath layers of bureaucracy. You are not the Iceman you once were."
Mycroft shot him a stern look, but Sherlock merely raised an eyebrow in response. The truth was, Mycroft Holmes, the enigmatic and powerful government official, had a softer side that few were privy to. The prospect of family, of a life beyond the intricacies of political manoeuvring and clandestine operations, was something he couldn't help but entertain since you had entered his life.
As you approached with Rosie and John, Mycroft smoothly shifted the conversation. "And what have you been conspiring about over there?" he asked, his tone impeccably composed.
You grinned, the little one in your arms giggling. "We were just discussing the best strategy for decorating the tree. It seems you have a budding interior designer on your hands, John. She has very definite ideas about what belongs on a tree."
Mycroft's gaze softened as he looked at the two of you, a twinge of warmth in his eyes. "Indeed, it appears so. Perhaps we should let our young prodigy take the lead in the decorations next year."
Sherlock smirked, detecting the subtle shift in Mycroft's demeanour. "I never thought I'd see the day when my brother willingly allowed his home to be decorated for the festive season. It seems we have a Christmas miracle."
Your laughter echoed through the air as you handed little Rosie over to John, a sense of warmth lingering in the atmosphere. Placing a gentle hand on Mycroft's arm, you remarked, "It's a season of surprises, after all."
Meanwhile, Rosie, in her father's arms, couldn't contain her curiosity, her tiny hands reaching for the enticing display of sugar cookies on the bar. Without hesitation, you purchased one, starting to unwrap it before a thoughtful pause crossed your face.
"Oh, do you think these might be a little too sweet for her? Mycroft, darling, can you try a bit?" You turned to him, holding out the cookie, expecting him to automatically acquiesce.
Mycroft raised an eyebrow, a mild protest forming on his lips. "Me?"
With a playful grin, you teased, "Well, you are the one with the sweet tooth."
The accusation, albeit light-hearted, was one Mycroft couldn't deny. With a small sigh of mock frustration, he broke off a corner of Rudolph's ear and placed it into his mouth. Chewing thoughtfully, he declared, "Not as sugary as one might think, given the season."
John accepted the cookie gratefully, making his way to an empty table where Rosie eagerly indulged in the festive treat. As you and Sherlock observed the adorable scene, Mycroft slyly purchased a couple of cookies for himself, slipping them discreetly into his jacket pocket.
Sherlock sauntered over to join John and Rosie, his penchant for imparting unconventional knowledge evident as he began explaining to the small child the reasons why Rudolph might be a female reindeer rather than male. Mycroft, standing nearby, couldn't help but wear a bemused expression as he watched his eccentric brother engage with the little girl.
"Your brother is infuriating, but he is surprisingly good with children." You mused, leaning against Mycroft and letting your arm slip around his waist.
"Unnervingly so," Mycroft replied, his attention momentarily divided, a faint frown forming on his usually composed features.
Sensing a slight distraction in Mycroft's demeanour, you decided to break the quiet moment with a question, hoping to offer some reassurance. "You know you're stuck with me, right?"
The unexpected inquiry caught him off guard, and Mycroft looked down at you, raising an eyebrow. "I am not 'stuck' with you; that would imply I am unhappy with the arrangement. I rather fear it is you who is 'stuck'."
Your laughter filled the air, and Mycroft couldn't help but allow a small, fond smile to grace his lips. The banter, the shared moments, and the ease with which you complemented each other had become an integral part of his life—a fact he wouldn't trade for anything.
Your words carried a tender sincerity that caused a subtle shift in Mycroft's usually composed countenance. The glint in your eyes hinted at a depth of understanding that made him wonder if you had somehow glimpsed his recent musings.
"I think you would be a rather brilliant father, just so you know," you declared nonchalantly, your eyes twinkling with genuine affection.
Mycroft, momentarily caught off guard by the heartfelt compliment, allowed a softness to touch his features. "Perhaps that is a discussion for the New Year. Right now, we have to sit through an eight-hour plane journey with a toddler."
His attention returned to Rosie, who was thoroughly engrossed in creating a masterpiece on Sherlock's shirt with crumbled cookie and icing. The amusing chaos brought a small smile to Mycroft's face, a silent acknowledgment of the unpredictable joys that parenthood might bring.
"First things first," you agreed, acknowledging the immediate reality of the plane journey ahead and the shared journeys which might present themselves in the not too distant future.

2023 Year In Review
This year once again I invited some friends and colleagues to reflect on 2023

2023 was an intense year. The year began with the premiere of my symphony for Alarm Will Sound and ended with guesting vocalizing with Dinosaur Jr on some Stooges classics. I completed the final season of Archer. Wrote a lot of material for new Xordox and Foetus albums. Released an album of string quartets and scored a Venture Bros movie. Worked with some great singers and premiered my Ensemble project in London. I spent several months traveling and set up a small studio in Melbourne for a bit. Road tripped through NZ with my partner, Dora. I played some excellent shows in London, Colchester, Auckland, Wellington, Melbourne and Sydney. I still woke up 5am in a panic on too many occasions. And I saw some great concerts.It was difficult to whittle down this list but here are a lot of albums I enjoyed in 2023, in no particular order.

I started off the year by releasing a project very close to my heart: Fifth Continent, a collaboration with the late Keith Collins, partner and collaborator of film maker and artist Derek Jarman. The album was partially recorded in Jarman’s cottage in the desert-like landscape of Dungeness, on the South East coastline of Kent, in the UK, with elements constructed from Collins own spoken word pieces, and environmental recordings. The album was released on James Ginzberg’s Subtext label, and we also produced Fifth Quarter, an anthology publication of writing, recollections, photography and newly commissioned artworks about Jarman, Collins and Dungeness.
Although I probably made more music than usual this year, and had a greater focus than ever on the various projects I have underway, 2023 felt like a weird and often frustrating year for me and music. About five years ago I set about teaching myself modular systems, experimenting, and recording the results as I went along. This culminated in a new solo guise primarily for electronics and the synthesis of voice and acoustic instruments, MICROCORPS (the debut album Xmit came out on Alter records in 2021). Using these systems is at the same time liberating and incredibly frustrating. For a while this year nothing felt good enough: I could feel the potential of my ideas glimmering in the distance but was unable to catch up with them. I decided to take a short break from the modular, and focused upon compositions for cello, saxophone, and clarinet. But the pull of electronics is never far, so I began processing these recordings, using granular synthesis to stretch, mutate and reorganise the audio into new pieces. As soon as you want more from your practice and yourself, things can become more laborious - it’s difficult to be in the moment and focus on what’s in front of you. I used to be happy with the immediate effects I produced, but I think this is being replaced by a different approach, something more considered, which is exciting and, in some ways, sobering - even if the results are far from what you would describe as sober. I’m also so lucky to have many friends and fellow artists around me to offer help and suggestions, to whom I’m eternally grateful. As R.Crumb says, “Keep on truckin”.

Comics: In 2023 I produced a new issue of my ongoing oblique and nonlinear comic series, Entity Reunion. For this issue I drew upon my love of HP Lovecraft, using the repetition of the comic format to peel back layers of the everyday to reveal omnipotent entities underlying all reality. The viewpoint of each page is from the point of view of the protagonists, who hold an electronic device, photographing their surroundings only to capture the blurred features of some insidious face. There are also references to Lovecraft’s own fictional grimoire the Necrononmicon. I wanted that dreamlike sensation of being the protagonists of the dream but also viewing yourself as separate entity.
Books: I read nearly all of Patrica Highsmith’s ‘Ripley’ books, a bunch of John Le Carr�� novels, Mark Kermode’s book on The Exorcist and I’m currently working my way through the spy novelist Eric Ambler’s books. I also re-read Bruce Robinson’s analysis on Jack the Ripper and Victorian society, ‘They All Love Jack’.

BOOKS My phone has pretty much eliminated my ability to read. I did read the first 100 pages of more books than I care to admit. I finally finished Mark Andrews’ Paint My Name In Black and Gold: The Rise of the Sisters of Mercy and I recommend it if, like me, you think The Sisters of Mercy are better than the Beatles (or whatever inane comparison annoys your friends the most). I also discovered Gene Wolfe and read the first book in the Book of the New Sun trilogy. Otherwise, it’s pretty much been just using Louise Glück poetry as inspiration to write terrible versions of Louise Glück poetry.

Movies Didn’t watch any new movies this year but I did have a lot of youtube videos playing in the background while I did other things, and sometimes those videos would be three hour long screeds about what was wrong with a number of movies I’d never heard of. So I feel like I got the gist. 
LIFE Converted to Islam and married Zohra in January. Both choices have proven to be rewarding as all hell. Cashing in my “as a Jew I…” argument card—while simultaneously being too new a Muslim to reasonably claim either special knowledge and/or marginalization status—has really fucked with my ability to be self-righteous online. But the love that Zohra and her family have shown me has more than made up for my newfound inability to really wipe the floor with a motherfucker in the instagram comments. In fact, I liked marrying Zohra so much that I did it again in December (first time was a religious ceremony, the second time was our rendering to Caesar etc). If you know me/us and weren’t invited to either that’s because essentially no one was. As my parents couldn’t attend (on account of being dead) I didn’t really see the point of a big party. That was perhaps selfish. We love you (probably) and will have some sort of to-do in 2024. 
Otherwise, I am still very much enjoying working for the new CREEM Magazine (please subscribe) and doing my newsletter (please subscribe). Musically, I lived vicariously through Zohra and the release of her first solo album. Murder In The Temple, with amazing production by Ben Greenberg and contributions by Lydia Lunch, is a synthesis of so many of Zohra’s obsessions. It’s unlike anything in the post-goth-dark-whatever sphere and I can’t express how proud I am of it and her. As for my music, I did some neat-o Scientists-esque stuff with Telematics (Sohrab Habibion, Robert Austin, and Alexis Fleisig) and Zohra and I did a Sheer Terror cover in the style of Tindersticks to commemorate Paul Bearer’s marriage. Also, I’m pretty sure my most successful band (Publicist UK) got dropped by our label (apparently taking eight years to finish a demo is a long time) so get at me if you have a low-to-mid tier label and want to put out an album of eight minute gothic metal songs with zero mosh parts, about an aging hipster loving his wife and cats and missing his dead mom and dad. C’mon, do it. You’d be printing money.

If 2022 was the Return of the Show and the Return of Travel, 2023 was about Building Stability (i.e. making my teaching studio a primary income source), Hunkering Down to Finish Two Albums, and Re-Learning How to Be a Human Being. I also played a bunch of cool shows with Dither (collabs w/ Carla Kilhlstedt, Lee Ranaldo/Brian Chase, Amirtha Kidambi, AJ Santillan, and Laurie Spiegel; playing Electric Counterpoint on GFA), a couple fun Scarcity shows (playing with Liturgy, improvising on graphic scores by Anthony Hawley) and did some performances with Whimbrels and Contemporaneous.

This year was full of firsts for me! 
Definitely the most musically eventful year of my life to date. I went on my first tour playing bass with my great friends in COP/OUT, supporting Days n' Daze (A band I'd been listening to for years as a young punk kid.)  I immediately realized touring is really all I want to do.  I also got to tour alongside Subhumans in Cop/Out. Meeting them and getting to know them was mind expanding.  They were all kind and humble thoughtful individuals, completely down to earth and engaged with everyone they spoke to. Every night across the midwest they brought the crowd to a cathartic screaming euphoric mess. Working with COP/OUT, whose message is so clear; to be good to each other, question everything even when it means swimming upstream with every bit of strength you have, filled me with hope.  Playing on that tour with them, and watching Subhumans every night reminded me the power of music to affect real social change which is something I believed to have been  lost in recent years.  I met my great friend Jessica Mills on that tour and we still talk all the time. 
I also started playing guitar in The Art Gray Noizz Quintet. One of my longtime favorite bands (that my very talented cool boyfriend happens to play bass in.) We went all across the West Coast, landing in Las Vegas. Playing with them has demanded I advance as a guitarist, stepping into Andrea Sicco's shoes. Andrea is a complete beast of a musician and all of his musical projects are awesome. Check out MOVIE MOVIE, his most recent project. 
I also joined Crazy And The Brains on second guitar. They’re a super fun high energy punk band. I love being around such positive fun loving musicians and watching them bounce around while I do my best to keep up. 
I recently finished recording my album at HOBO SOUND in Hoboken by James Frazee. The time and effort it took over the several years since I started, was at times grueling. But James never stopped caring or checked out. He helped me shape this album into something I am truly proud of, along with Richard Dev Greene, one of the first people to ever believe in my music. I am so grateful to both of them.
I started spending time with Victoria and Kay of Puzzled Panther. They quickly have become two of my best friends. It is so meaningful for me to have found such badass, driven young women to share a dream with. Puzzled Panther is raw and hypnotizing. They have a unique strong hold over their audience and every show of theirs I’ve been to has been fantastic.  Victoria has joined me a few times on a song at my shows, and every time I believe has been one of the strongest points in my set. 
I Met Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello (the first huge band I ever went to see as a young teenager.)  He will be releasing my upcoming single and video for “Come And Go”  on his label Casa Gogol Records in early 2024. 
I just played the biggest show I’ve ever played with my solo project that plays under my name.  We were on a bill with Gogol Bordello and JON SPENCER (Also one of my favorite artists.)  Being on that stage standing there in front of more people I’ve ever seen in an audience from that vantage point, I felt like every second of my life was leading to that moment. Each song brought me back to the time in my life when Id written it and it felt very much like watching my life projected in front of me. It was indescribably satisfying to be on that stage. Later, in the audience, I screamed along to Gogol and watched my mom dance to songs she'd heard me blasting through the house as a kid, and felt just as moved by them as I did as a young teenager the first time I saw them.
I am so grateful to be working with Eugene. He is kind and thoughtful in his feedback and hugely supportive of me and my dreams. 
I will be playing New Years Eve with the Art Gray Noizz Quintet before Kid Congo Powers and The Pink Monkey Birds !!
This last week I can honestly say, has been the best of my life to date. Like looking out over a valley after climbing for years.

I got to see Richard Dawson three whole times!!! it was his first US appearance. He is a completely unique force. I’ve never seen such a captivated crowd. we all cried and screamed along with him. 
PIGS X 7 
One of those times he was playing with Pigs x7. They quickly became another favorite band of mine despite having severe technical difficulties. it was actually kind of a highlight because their front man just started joking around and had the entire audience laughing along with him and talking for about 10 minutes. I got to see them two other times that went perfectly. What a band.. 
JON SPENCER AND THE HIT MAKERS
I saw them at TV Eye. I had been able to squeeze myself into the DJ booth for their set. They hammered away into some kind of magical hypnosis that made me feel like I'd taken MDMA. (I had not.) I had to lean against a wall to keep my balance. They played with Licks, a badass 60s garage rock inspired band fronted by my friend Skunk.

Also driving and hypnotic and loud as hell. I was left with a similar feeling of having been dosed with something at all of their shows…

The first time I saw Joseph perform was at TV eye with Lydia Lunch. He’s completely unique. He writes gorgeous songs that he sings in an incomprehensibly wide range, sometimes in languages that he has invented himself! His seamlessly mixes humor with honest beautiful songwriting.

I want to thank JG Thirlwell for inviting me to submit my 2023 Year in Review. I had never done one of these before and it's been a fun challenge to go through my calendar and social media to remember and realize how much I was able to pack into this year! Selecting and writing down all of these things also helped me further grasp and understand how tremendously privileged and lucky I am to be able to do what I love all year around, year after year, and to live my life to the fullest and according to my own wishes and my own design. I don't take this lightly and I don't take it for granted. MUSIC SHOWS It's always hard for me to recount the shows I've seen because I usually see about 300-500 shows every year. LPR (Le Poisson Rouge) definitely shines through as my favorite venue and the one I've visited most often! Here are some of the highlights of 2023:

MOVIES There are soooo many movies I still want to / need to see… I love movies but I prioritize work and live music in my life and I will only watch movies on planes, on (very very) rainy days or those rare times when I don't have a concert on my calendar, so here are a few of those rainy/non-concert films, in no particular order:
Killers of the Flower Moon (for the story, the acting and the soundtrack)
Equalizer 3 (because aside from its Hollywood-ish story and ending, it's a realistic look at how organized crime works in Italy)
Little Richard: I am Everything (for his story, his character, his music and his courage!)
Psychedelicized: The Electric Circus Stroy (for the amazing portrait of a time that's past but that changed NYC forever!)
American Symphony (for the amazing story, talent, spirit and courage of Jon Batiste)
32 Sounds (because my life is about sound…)
Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song (because Leonard was an amazing artist and songwriter and singer and so many friends are in this movie)
Oppenheimer (because that history is so complex and so divided as the country in which it took place)
TRAVEL Travel is the richess of life! I travel SO MUCH that I am on a plane AT LEAST once a month and usually it is to an international location… This year was no different, so I've decided to only list 12 trips for this section:
January: Ringing in the year in a medieval tower in Barcelona and spending the first 4 days of the new year trying all the tapas bars, restaurants, food stands this beautiful city has to offer and seing the Sagrada Familia cathedral for the 3rd time in my life
February: Living in Amsterdam for 3 weeks visiting all the musuems, all the music venues and all the while working at the Dutch National Opera with some amazing folks (see list above)
March: Snowboarding the Swiss and the French alps
April: Visiting Knoxville Tennessee for Big Ears (easily the best independent music festival in the US!!!) for the 2nd time in 2 years, and hopefully the beginning of many more visits in the future!
May: Spending time in sunny Los Angeles and plotting a way to spend more time there and make music
June: Visiting London twice in one month to work and see amazing music shows, theater shows and art exhibits
July: coming back from London on July 6th only to realize that strangely there is no travel for the rest of this month! So weird and unusual!
August: Spending the month in Puglia, Southern Italy eating good food, kitesurfing in the Adriatic and Ionium sea, seeing tons of concerts and playing one myself!
September: arriving in Mexico City and getting my very own police escort motorcade to make it in time from the airport to the theater
October: On tour with John Zorn in Italy, France and the Netherlands
November: Flying to Los Angeles with a 36 hour notice for a concert I was hired for in secrecy having been told "we need a mixing engineer who can mix music for a room full of musicians" and showing up for the Robbie Robertson tribute orgnaized by Martin Scorsese with people like Joni Mitchell and Leonardo DiCaprio in attendance
December: DC-to-DF aka flying to Washgington DC to work at the White House and then flying straight to Mexico City I've finished the year with travel to my motherland of Switzerland, my fatherland of Italy and my second home of London UK!

a/n: okay so it's more of a blurb, than a blurb. i hope that's okay. so sorry this is extremely late! also i don't think i really portrayed z as drunk but yeah. its still decent i think.

Everyone was in town for one last hurrah before their various training camps started up. For the last the night the idea of going to a karaoke bar was brought up. You loved the idea and even offered to find the bar.
"Trev we have to do a duet!" You urged when the group was signing up for songs. "We could do Don't Go Breaking My Heart or The Time of My Life or Islands-"
"Can we do our own songs?" He piped up. He had a certain song that he wanted to sing for her and a duet was not it.
"Or we could do that too." Trevor noticed your face fall slightly. He did fell kind of bad for that but he could make it up to you.
Sensing his friend's need for help, Cole offered to sing a song of your choice with you. He turned to Trevor and mouthed You owe me one.
The real fun began once everyone had entered in their song choices. Most boys chose some country song or hit classic rock song. Some people where better singers than others, but who really cared how well one could sing when you were having fun.
After Luke had finished with his rendition of Black, it was finally Trevor's turn. By the time his song was up much of the group had already had a few too many drinks and weren't really paying attention to the intro of the song. In fact it wasn't until you heard your name being mentioned over the sound system that you realized he was up.
"This. This is for my Y/N. Love you baby girl." Trevor giggled pointing in your general direction as an instrumental version of a popular Taylor Swift song played.
"The moon is high, like your friends were the nigh that we first met ..."
"Oh no." You mumble, eyes going wide. Paper Rings was not his normal karaoke song, that was Wildest Dreams. What was your hockey player boyfriend up to?
You could feel everyone's eyes on you while Trevor was up on stage singing and doing a little dance, giving everyone a performance they weren't going to forget anytime soon. It was almost as if this had all been planned in advance or something.
"Jack, what's he doing? He changed his song."
"I don't know. He never told me anything." Jack lied. He knew exactly what Trevor was doing, they all did, you could tell by the goofy smiles the boys were giving you. "Just thinking about it and watch!"
So you did, you sat with your friends, sipping on your fruity little cocktail and enjoying the moment.
"Darling, you're the one I want, In paper rings, in picture frames, in dirty dreams ..."
It was a stupid idea and he knew it. That's how Trevor knew that you would love it. A couple of days ago when he was brainstorming with the boys on how to propose, it was suggested that he should do it at karaoke.
That's why he was on currently on stage, singing one of your favorite Taylor Swift song. Everything appeared to going as planned, he wasn't messing up the song and you were bopping your head along to the song. The only snag was he may or may not have a few too many drinks and was a bit drunker in the moment than he would have liked to be.
Trevor's big moment was coming up. There was a small break in the music and he called you to join him on the stage. It took you a hot second to make the trek up there.
"I know you like shiny things, but would you marry me with a paper ring?" He nervously asked you, reaching into his back to grab the literal paper ring he had to give you.
"I squished it. I'm sorry, it's not supposed to look like this." Trevor pouted looking at the smooshed ring.
"Trevor?"
"Hmm?"
"Yes." Trevor slipped the ring on your finger, it really didn't fit, but he could replace with the actual diamond ring he had sitting at home. You pulled him in for a kiss, a loud cheer erupted from section where the rest of your group was sitting.
"Now does anyone know where I marry someone tonight?"

Oh boy... OH BOY... I was reading through comments and tags under that Flint vs. Stede post (and before that in Silver vs. Oluwande post) and OH BOY RANT INCOMING
Feel free to ignore. No, I'm prickly about this.
I LOVE how people are like "Black Sails fans are so mean why are they like that T.T ?" in the tags and comments.
LET ME TELL YOU.
So we have this show that has been marginalized and has been pushed to the side for years. A show that has excellent plot, wonderful intrigue, magnificent representation and well-written, 3D characters that are complex and relatable. You get your edgy queer men (whether you want to characterize Flint as gay or bi, doesn't change the fact that he likes dick whichever way), you get your edgy queer girls (Anne), you get your flamboyant whatever-the-fuck-Jack-Rackham-is (<3), you get sweet gays (Thomas), you get confused bisexuals (Eleanor, Silver), you get straight sweets (Miranda) and straight angery dicks (Woodes Rogers), and competent, edgy straights (Vane). Oh! A competent, master-of-the-house lesbian? Check (Max). You even have asexuals, or that is what I shall forever classify Billy as. You have a f/f sex scene in the first damn episode, ffs. You get threesomes (sexual, romantic), you get couples, you even have Silver in a brothel orgy.
But sexual representation is not ALL! You get goofy pirates (Jack Rackham), you get serious pirates (Blackbeard), you get balls of rage (Flint), you get chill, laid-back sea dogs (Gates), you get competent little weasels (Silver), you get incompetent rats (Dufrense). You also have marvelous extras and side characters (Beauclerc the marksman, Captain Fruit-Fruit, Idelle... OHMYGOD IDELLE <3333).
There's the political plot that's historically accurate, the story's plot that's Flint's big gay rage, there's the sociological context of being painted as a monster, there's the gold hunt, there are ships correctly operated by crews of more than five fucking people, there are guns, blood and realistic injuries. You get quotations and allusions to Shakespeare, Cervantes, Julius Caesar, Marcus Fucking Aurelius, a metric ton of other classical writers. You get so many tropes done right it's astonishing and too effing long to list them all here.
On top of that, there is the picturesque landscape, absolutely gorgeous ships and very accurate portrayal of how life looked back then.
We had to defend that show when it first came out, the actors had to fucking fight homophobic assholes upon the airing of season two (IMAGINE THAT), people who loved it had a hard time going around, although admittedly it's a "fandom" hard time, not a "real life" hard time. We persisted, we persevered, and now we're here, clinging to what's left of our fandom, because we are admittedly all over the place and we don't have "troops" on any one social media, which makes our numbers small in comparison to other fandoms, and makes fandom interactions very limited.
Now imagine that there aired a show... a pirate show promising a lot. And then the show turned out to be an office-type comedy with no lesbian/bi women representation (I may be wrong, but I did watch it out of curiosity, didn't see any, just guys). A show that the whole plot of is just a rendition of the Beauty and the Beast for pirate times with so many historical inaccuracies (couching your crew like a bunch of office workers? Plz. The way they speak and the concepts they talk of that weren't there? It's like they were sitting around a fire, holding hands and singing kumbaya). And don't get me wrong, there's place for those shows as well, and maybe it works for you (and great for you too!).
We tried to ignore it, really we did. We basically gave it the eyebrow-raise-huff-ignore thing that you do on the internet when you want someone to enjoy their stuff and are not interested in it yourself.
But you know what happened? Suddenly there were people on twitter tagging everyone and their dog from Black Sails with renditions of Flint/Izzy (Izzy who comes across as an extreme asshole at best and a homophobic shit at worst and you can't fault people for reading it like this). Let that sink in - our fandom babe Flint, who had his whole life ruined due to homophobia and homophobic assholes is suddenly being shipped with a guy who suspiciously fits the description a bit too much for our tastes. Wouldn't you get angry? Of course you would, we're all very protective of our babes. We are, you are, everyone is. We asked you not to do this, and while I admit that hurling curses your way might not have been the most polite way of asking you to stop, the message was clear enough. What does OFMD fandom do? They all double down. Double fucking down on fanfiction and tagging everything in BS again, pairing Flint and Izzy together, writing things way out of the realm of any possibilities because most of the writers didn't watch BS (I did read their comments on that. They weren't even sorry). If you take such character and throw him into a work of art that can and will be seen as controversial, you should at least have the decency to do your homework on the original work he comes from. Otherwise, to our eyes, you're taking the most wronged man from our beloved show, wronged due to his sexuality, and throw him together with a literal asshole just to see them fuck because they would look pretty (and that's an actual comment from one of the artists, I shit you not). Wouldn't you feel a bit angry about that? I bet you would.
What's worse, people loving Black Sails and not liking OFMD usually point out how narrow the representation is, how improbable the show is and how they're not remotely invested in the plot. It's a cheesy show for your average Sunday afternoon, don't make it into something it's not. It's not a political statement any more than Guess The Tune is.
What's more, when I've seen attempts at people pointing out the obvious flaws in plot, in logic (how many people crew that ship exactly? How is he not dead after being stabbed clean through with a sword?), all we've gotten was "Oh it's not that type of show, OBVIOUSLY", "it's just a comedy, duh" and my personal favorite "you just DON'T UNDERSTAND IT BOOMER". (I'm a late Millennial, thx). Every attempt was chucked out the window. What got me most, tho, was the high praise of OFMD IS THE FIRST SHOW TO [insert whatever queer thing it did supposedly]. No, it's not. There was even a post on twitter that debunked all those claims one by one. I get it, you're happy that you got your gay pirates, good for you. But give credit where credit's due, otherwise you're gonna piss off a lot of people. People who watched our show struggle and crawl so that your show can run today and be fine and accepted widely.
And personally, I felt disappointed watching it because of the lack of representation. Disappointed that Ed turned out to be just as rainbowy as Stede. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against rainbowy, ultra-sweet characters that are big softies. I love them. But not everyone in the lgbtq community is like that. Actually, it's the minority. There are your sweets, there are your glittery rainbows, but the majority is on the more... inconspicuous part of the scale. And there are edgy people (like myself) who don't like glitter, pink, feathers, fluff and a shitton of other things this show had in abundance. You know what made me wince while watching? When I realized that the only person who I could remotely like for the way they weren't so glittery-rainbowy-sweet was Izzy, and I hated him because he was an asshole. Even Jim got the fluffy af oranges arch. So not my (and others') cup of tea.
So yeah, our recent anger and rabidity is not based solely on one post about an insignificant poll (that you're winning only because our fandom is significantly smaller and most people are dispersed between different sites). It's all those things combined and it's the result of them.
And no, I'm not going to finish it with a "please forgive us if we seem a bit angery, we're coping". Flint wouldn't.

The end of the Original Modern Lovers? This might've been the band's final official gig — thanks to Jesse J for passing along a recently surfaced tape. Jesse calls the recording's quality "atrocious," and he's not wrong (though it's as much the fault of the venue's cavernous acoustics as it is the tape's). Whatever, atrocious quality audience recordings are what Doom & Gloom is all about, am I right? So adjust your ears and take a trip back to a bitter New England winter just about 50 years ago.
Historic/interesting stuff! The set sees the Modern Lovers attempting to bring together their older, more VU-inspired material with the quieter, more innocent songs that Jonathan Richman was writing. There are tunes that will certainly be familiar — "Roadrunner," "Government Center," "Pablo Picasso," etc. And then there are several strong songs that — as far as I know — don't appear anywhere else in the Modern Lovers' discography (officially or unofficially). And hey, it all works pretty well; in some alternate universe, the band might've been able to reconcile their two sides and finally record a proper debut LP. It was not to be, alas — soon, Jerry Harrison would head back to Harvard to get his master's degree in architecture. And today, he is renowned as one of the world's greatest architects ... right???
Of course, we have to note the truly bonkers lineup — a heretofore unknown alignment with the Velevet (sic) Underground and George Thorogood galaxies. Though if the description below is correct (though the source says the date was Valentine's Day), Moe Tucker didn't even get to play because of George. That's truly b-b-b-b-bad. But, as Jesse pointed out, Jonathan and Moe did make it into the studio a few days later to record their charming rendition of the VU's "I'm Sticking With You." Was Moe's band really called the Bloody Virgins?! Hmmm, further investigation is warranted.
An eyewitness account? Although the Modern Lovers broke up in 1973, they reformed in '74 (maybe late '73) with a different drummer but that didn't last long because the drummer hated Jonathan. They did at least one concert: Valentine's Day 1974. I was there early with Jonathan so I got to see all the sound checks for all three bands. Unfortunately, the idiot promoters let the mediocre opening band, George Thoroughlynogood and the Delaware Destroyers, play for one hour and 45 minutes. They should have had 25 minutes max. Thus, the Modern Lovers could only play one hour. And the second band couldn't play at all, which is very unfortunate, as it was Mo Tucker's excellent (and totally unknown) all-girl band the Bloody Virgins (but me and Jonathan got to watch their excellent 25-minute sound check). Seven or either years ago, an internet music forum was discussing Mo, and I talked about seeing that band. A noted music critic (and friend of Mo) was pissed off and said that Mo never had any such band and that I was a liar. Luckily, I still had the concert ad and uploaded a photo of it to the forum.
Ernie Brooks: At one of the last gigs we did, when we played “Roadrunner,” we still didn’t have a record out, but that was always a catchy song, and we actually got some applause—and then Jonathan said, “People like that song too much; I don’t think we should do it anymore….” I think it was just part of Jonathan’s natural inclination that when things seemed to be going well—to go against it. He was very contrary. He was very difficult. I mean, anybody who is on to something new has some element of being a contrarian, because they’re rejecting the status quo. They’re doing something in the way they’ve figured out how to do it—and they don’t want to hear something different, even if it could make things better. When Jonathan said, “I won’t play 'Roadrunner' anymore,” it was pretty much the classic case—you can’t really get any more contrarian than that.

"Hey," Robin calls out. You lift your head from your sketchbook to find her in the action section, holding a VHS above her head. "Date night or no?"
You squint just a little, getting a slightly clear view of the title. "No," you return. Robin nods and turns back to the couple in front of her. Her voice is distinct as she rambles on how much she holds your opinion to a higher standard than anyone else's. She then goes on to recommend a film you hated.
If it weren't so funny watching her clearly trying not to flirt with the girl tucked up under the guys arm and keep herself on task of helping them pick out a film, you'd want to interject and tell them that the pick is garbage. But you refrain enjoying the way Robin's cheeks flair a bright red and she nearly runs out of breath with how fast she's talking.
The couple decides to go with something more classic action adventure that Steve recommends, which you do like. The couple leaves without so much as another glance backwards. "Figures," you laugh.
"Whatever," Robin huffs. "Clearly, they don't have taste."
"Clearly," you snort. "Rob, thoughts?" You turn the sketchbook around and reveal the portrait of her that you'd been working on over the last couple of days.
Her jaw drops, hands reaching up for the book. "Holy moly," she gapes. The 2D rendition of her own face is uncanny but she inspects all angles to see if somehow she'll come alive off the page, all graphite and smoky, but she doesn't. "You are a God amongst men," she exhales.
The bells chime yet again from the front door and the trio of you turn to the sound. Robin and Steve prepared to greet the new customer and there, hair billowing just a little from their face is Eddie Munson. He only gives a nod to Robin and Steve before turning to the left and heading for the thriller and horror section.
You watch him as he walks and right before you break the eye contact, Eddie looks back, a smile softly lifting his cheeks. You're not sure if you actually witness it or not, but you swear he winks at you and the thought that Eddie would ever have half the mind to give you more than a two second look over is enough to make your knees nearly buckle.
"I'm literally going to throw up," you whisper. Robin hears it, slapping the back of her hand into your chest. The action alone gets you to tear your gaze of the back of Eddie's denim vest.
Robin grins up at you. "Ask him out."
"Oh get off it," you hiss and then take your sketchbook back from her. You flip it close and stuff it into your backpack. You were supposed to be helping out, considering Friday night would get undeniably packed with people preparing for the weekend. Rather than going home before your shift, you just came immediately here.
"Oh, c'mon," she calls out to your retreating figure. "I'm sorry! I just--my brain and mouth are literally are on two different speeds and timezones. C'mon!" she calls even after the doors to employee room closes.
"Ouch," Eddie comments. "Trouble in paradise?"
Robin turns to the voice and notices a copy of Children of the Corn in Eddie's hands. "Again?" she laughs.
"Jeff keeps chickening out at the best part. It's his fault," Eddie laughs, sliding the box over the desk. He rattles off his phone number without Robin having to prompt him. But his gaze keeps lingering on the employee door. "He okay?"
Robin scans out the copy of the movie and looks over her shoulder in the direction that Eddie is still staring. "He's okay. I'm just an idiot." Robin gets what it's like--there's no telling who isn't and is like them. There's no telling who's going to accept you or shun you. A lingering gaze that last too long or even just a date could be social suicide if not actual suicide. She just knows that you and Eddie would work out.
She can see it right now in the way that Eddie keeps looking back over her shoulder. Like he's got something else to say or something else he wants to do. But he doesn't. He nods at Robin, smiling but it doesn't quite reach his eyes. His exit is swift soon after and Robin swears in that moment that she cannot let you or Eddie miss out on the chance of at least one date together.
She find Steve, flirting with a girl that clearly is not looking just for herself and politely recommends another film for her to read through before dragging Steve away from the customer. "Does Eddie like care about the town fair?"
Steve blinks for a moment trying to understand why Robin has such an investment in Eddie's taste of extracurricular activities. "Why-Do you think I would know?" he asks.
"I just need to you ask Dustin for me okay. Just get Dustin to agree to get Eddie to the carnival on Saturday. 6PM sharp."
Steve watches Robin's retreating figure as she jobs to the employee room. He gapes at the ghost of her. "Henderson is not going to be able to convince Eddie alone," he whispers, scrubbing a hand over his face, knowing he's somehow getting roped into something and it most likely involves you if Robin is asking about Eddie.
And on Saturday, 6PM sharp you stroll up to the ticket line, hands slipping into the front of you front of your jeans. You're not sure when Robin or Steve are going to show up. You know Steve probably grabbed Robin before heading here and so you're more than willing to give them a few minute grace period. Besides, it's a strangely warm night. With the hint of summer approaching, the days were growing warmer. But there was nothing quite like the MidWest to keep you on your toes.
You resolve yourself to waiting and from just behind you, someone calls out your name. You turn and spot Eddie, strolling, hands tucked into his jacket pockets. He stops just a couple feet shy of you. "Fancy seeing you here," he teases.
Your heart stammers in your chest and your tongue grows thick and dry. "Oh, uh, hi," you stammer out.
"Are-are you waiting on someone?" Eddie asks, elbow extending out to the crowd that is approaching.
"Uh, Robin and Steve. You?"
"Steve," he returns slowly. "And Henderson, Sinclair, and Wheeler."
Your brow furrows. "Dustin? And both Wheelers and Sinclairs or?"
"Just Lucas and Mike. They, uh, they asked if I'd come and I couldn't really say no to them even if I wanted too." Eddie laughs at his own tendernes and then gazes back up to you. "They told me to wait for them as Steve was picking them up."
"Robin said Steve was picking her up."
"Steve's beamer seats 5 anyway. Do you mind if I wait with you? Since we're sort of waiting for the same people?"
You shake your head. "No, no, I don't mind." It's a miracle now that you're thinking in the silence that's settled for a moment that you've managed to keep a conversation up for as long as you did with Eddie. You always felt way too nervous around him to get the words out before. But he's easy to talk to. It definitely helps that Eddie seems to be able to keep a conversation alive even if it feels like it's fallen silent for far to long.
"How'd-how'd the art show go?" Eddie noticed it being judged when he was sneaking out after lunch to the woods. He saw you standing in front of your drawings, judges peering at the displays. He stopped only for a minute to watch you.
"Good. Placed second overall."
"Shit, dude, that's awesome." The happiness is real, but Eddie cringes at his use of dude. He doesn't want to just be friendly but he's sure he can't outright flirt with you. So far, he's able to keep you enganged. Your face lights up as you talk about your art and you catch how after a few minutes you've just been rambling about things you're sure Eddie doesn't care about.
"I'm sorry. I'm totally just on a soaobox. I-I heard you're playing at The Hideout now?"
"Yeah, yeah, Tuesday's nights."
"Better than Gareth's garage?"
"Ten times better," Eddie laughs. "You-you should come by. If you want of course. If that's your scene."
"As-as long as you sure you want me there?" you return, not wanting to overstep through the yes is burning the tip of your tongue.
Eddie nods. "Oh, I'm sure." He happens just to check his watch to see fifteen minutes have passed. "Huh, would've thought they'd be here by now?"
You check yours too and noticing how much time has passed. "DO you think they're okay?"
"I would hope. I mean, it's not that far," Eddie laughs. Silence falls between the two of you for another moment longer and then Eddie reaches out, his hands ever so gently grazing your elbow. "Do-do you want to get tickets and head inside? We could do stuff near the front for when they show up?"
"Oh, I-oh." You want to articulate that you'd love to do that but then you're worried you'll miss Steve and Robin and the kids.
"Just say yes! You idiots! Oh my god!"
You turn behind you to see Robin peering around from the ticket booth. "Just say yes. This was supposed to be a magical moment for you two have a date but I swear to God, I have to spell everything out for you."
Your eyes widen like saucers and you're whipping around to see who's around. There is no way Robin would do this to you and you can feel your feet carrying you away before you can really process what's happening. The tears are brimming around your waterline and the lights are blurring.
"Hey, wait," Eddie's touch is soft on your shoulder. You pull out from his grasps. He calls out our name again breaks out into a jog to stop in front of you. "I like you too," Eddie whispers. It's all he can say, panic crawling up his chest. "I'd love to go out on a date with you."
The words, once they process, feel like you're breaking through water. At first muffled but then slowly it's clearer and clear. "You-you like me too?"
Eddie nods, his curls bounce at the action. A tiny smile breaks across his face, lifting his cheeks and causing a couple wrinkles to become pronounced around his eyes. "Yeah, a lot actually. No one has to know it's a date, but us. And well, Steve, Robin, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin. But like, we can keep it on the low, if it's easier for you. But I know half the reason I even agreed to this is because Dustin basically swore with 100% certainty you'd be here."
Your heart flutters at the news. Eddie agreeing to show up because you're here? It didn't seem possible. But there's Eddie smiling softly at you, his hand still cradling your elbow gently. "I hate heights," you answer.
"I love them," Eddie returns. "And I'll make sure that the heights won't hurt you."
You give a tiny nod. "Okay, promise?"
Eddie holds out his pinkie. "Promise."
And if you ever thought a pinky promise would land you here, pressed into the warmth of Eddie's bare chest, the rising sun now hitting you more and more in your eyeline, you think you might've asked for one sooner. Eddie's breathing is steady against your back. You've always been an early riser and you know Eddie likes to sleep in until noon, so you don't mind the few minutes of feeling his breathing tickles your neck.
After a while your bladder gets the best of you so you push up as gentle as you can from Eddie's heavy embrace and pad gently into the bathroom. By the time you return to the room, any lingering hold of sleep has slipped away. Eddie doesn't seem to have noticed your departure from the bed, but you don't want to go paddling about in the kitchen just yet, so you sit at Eddie's desk.
The morning continues on in relative silence. Eddie stirs, the bed creaking and he settles down, seemingly not waking. You watch him, on his back now only for a second before you go back to your page. The drawing is truly nearly done. But you're trying to capture the curl just right and are careful with each stroke of your pencil.
The bed creaks again behind you. A huff hits the air and you turn now, to see Eddie on his stomach, one arm splayed out where you know it would be over your stomach and waist. He lays there for a minute or two before he picks his head up. "Baby?"
"I'm here," you return softly, sitting now on the edge of the bed.
Eddie stretches out for you, palm settling on your knee. "Why are you up?"
"Had to pee."

You could argue that you're not tired, but you know it's a losing game. Eddie will get what he wants. You're too soft for him to argue seriously. "Can-can I show you something?"
Eddie groans, but pushes up with a heavy exhale. "This is going to cost you exactly ten kisses for waking me up."
"I can pay the toll," you tease, and gingerly guide him up and out of the bed.
Eddie lumbers behind you, eyes still not fully open but cracking more and more as the seconds pass. You settle Eddie down on the desk chair and he tugs you onto his lap, holding one arm securely around your waist.
"Now, what is it that you want to show me, love?" he asks pressing a kiss to your exposed shoulder. Both of you are shirtless, though you wear boxers and Eddie wears sweatpants.
You push the sketchbook closer to him. Eddie takes it gingerly, not wanting to smudge anything or get oils onto it and ruin something. He takes in the resemblance of his face and has to do a double check. That's his nose--undeniably his by the slope and shape. He continues over his own face--the big eyes, wild hair, and takes in the bare torso. The tattoos are rendered almost perfectly.
Eddie takes in the sight of his own naked form for more than a minute solid in complete silence. Like ghost he catches another pair of hands holding around his torso in the picture too. Eddie stares at them, the way the fingers trace him so delicately. The silence causes you to squirm a little in his lap, unsure if he hates it or not. "It's-it's not done yet, but I was thinking of--
You don't even get the chance to explain what you wanted to do for the background, or the other set of hands before Eddie sets the book down and turns your head to look at him. "It's beautiful," he whispers. Your lips brush as Eddie speaks. "Is it for me?"
You nod. "Do-do you like it?"
"Like it? Sweetheart I love it. M'ere," Eddie commands. There's only centimeters between you two, but you close the distance and seal his mouth into a kiss.
Eddie's one hand slip up onto your cheek. The other kneads at your waist, pulling you closer into him. The movement brings you higher onto his lap and his erection is evident now. You grin just a little at the feeling. "Already?" you tease.
"Oh, darling, when it comes to you, I'm always hard," he laughs, kissing you again. "Thank you, for drawing this. For sharing it with me."
"Of-of course," you stutter out as Eddie's plump lips find your neck.

Camille. I know more girl with that name, but it is not gendered. And was the name of the author sometimes describe as "Belgium's Zola".

A. Agreste (aka Chat Noir) Headcanons <3
Kind of a lot tbh—just headcanons that I like to apply in my AUs when they don’t clash with their particular premises. It’s just a hot mess under the cut yeah? Cool.
He was actually in ballet classes as a kid—the same ones as Chloé.
What’s funny is that Marinette was there too. However, boys and girls were kept separate and so he only really knew Chloé.
He only found out when he was going through his closet and found a shoe box with his old shoes and a bunch of class photos; he noticed Marinette in the corner of one.
He’s still really flexible though.
He actually used to go to see a live rendition of The Nutcracker each Christmas.
He wanted to play the Rat King rlly badly.
He’s got a killer steady hand that makes for rlly good cursive.
He has the neatest handwriting in the class, and takes rlly good notes too—particularly in physics.
He’s also got terrible sense in fashion. He knows good stuff when he sees it, but doesn’t know bad stuff is bad at all.
He really likes milk; in some horrible twist of fate, he’s also lactose intolerant.
He’s totally touch starved and rlly touchy feely w/ certain people.
He refuses to kill bugs. He once screamed and lifted Alya up off her feet for trying to squash a spider in the middle of science class.
He put it in a cup before disappearing for a good five minutes so he could walk all the way over to the park to release it where it would be safe.
He’s English and French.
He really likes gelato—specifically passionfruit; peach is a close second tho.
He knows how to run in heels; has a subtly burning hatred for them.
He really likes light up sneakers though and always wanted a pair.
He knows Morse code.
Rlly ticklish.
Sneezes super loudly.
Really crappy immune system thanks to never being allowed outside his castle walls; he got sick like three times within the first two months of school.
He really likes Piano Man by Billy Joel and can sing and play the whole thing.
Honestly his music taste consists of five types of music: Heavy/classic rock, classical/classical-style music (In The Hall of The Mountain King slaps ok), Billy Joel, chill-somber-sad-theatric-feels-y, and whatever the heck that migraine-inducing bs he’s got stashed in the back is.
His Spotify is a hot mess tbch; lots of spontaneous playlists depending on how he felt at the moment. The titles are usually smth along the lines of “ifykyk”, “vibe”, or “yeah”; either that or just the playlist #.
He has like five that are nice enough to send ppl, and those are the only ones he’s listened to more than twice. They’re called “Classical Vibes”, “Cheese Demon”, “Billy Joel Aesthetic”, “sad”, and “Spontaneous 2am Dance Party OST”.
He’ll literally save recommended playlists and never listen to them.
He never bothers to clean it up though, and has 600+ playlists sitting around.
Also he used to drink a ton of pediasures as a kid and his father doesn’t let him drink them anymore bc he’s not a little kid anymore obviously but he would kill for a muscle milk.
He’ll throw up if he ever tries to eat kale again; it’s a trauma response ok.
Emotion smart but social dumb.

He resists when in civilian form but once he’s transformed it’s Full Gremlin Mode activated.
He’s not good at drawing but he does try; he does a lot of blob style digital and is slowly getting better.
He overcomes his feelings of being stuck and not knowing what to do in life as seen in wish maker when he spends time with the Dupain-Chengs and realizes that that is what he wants. He then dreams of working in the bakery one day.
Cannot for the life of him resist eating the batter, ok. He needs it. He’s gonna get heckin’ salmonella one of these days and it’s going to have been worth it.
He gets really good at frosting “flower” cupcakes. He switches to succulents pretty easily after learning how to airbrush. They’re adorable.
Also really good at modeling lil fondant animals and things.
He’s developed separation anxiety surrounding both ladybug and Marinette—he rlly just wants to have both of them in one place at once and he’s rlly sad that it somehow never seems to happen; he’s rlly happy post-reveal.
He rlly loves babysitting; like honestly he loves kids, so so so much; if he weren’t thinking of taking over the bakery (and/or tied down as Chat Noir), he’d probably become a pediatric nurse or a daycare attendant or smth bc 💞💞💞
He’ll leave the press to Ladybug so he can talk w/ the akuma victims and make sure they’re okay.
He’ll escape out his window and climb to high places when stressed to pace.
Once lost a Chat Noir look alike contest.
Has referred to his civilian self as, and I quote, a “dipshit boytoy” whilst en costume.
He became a total night owl thanks to his miraculous but he’s just rlly good at pretending to not be tired.
He’s more cat than he’d like to admit:
He’ll react to catnip when transformed;
He’ll also chase laser pointers;
He subconsciously stares at birds;
Once a bird got stuck in the classroom and everyone was freaking out trying to catch it in a wire trash bin and stuff but it kept evading them so Adrien looked up and pulled out his music, watched it for a second, and then caught it by the feet mid-flight;
He brought it closer to himself and calmed it down as best he could, petting it as he walked over to the window to let it out;
Everyone was flabbergasted but no one said anything as he went back to working and by the time anyone could speak it was kinda late for questions;
He gets the zoomies at the most inconvenient times;
He’s made incredibly uneasy by dogs despite actually being more of a dog person.
Also more destruction powers seeping in alongside the cat attributes:
When he’s is in a funk, there’s crappy cell service, lights flicker, machines go haywire and burn out;
If he’s REALLY upset, drinking glasses and crystal can spontaneously combust;
His powers trickle over into when he’s a civilian;
He just keeps getting more and more frustrated with his computer as it begins to function less and less and keeps giving increasingly worse error codes;
He’s in a funk for the first half the day at school and for some reason the wifi is down;
His mood is lifted after a good lunch break and all of a sudden the computers are working super fast;
Though it frustrates him at first, Adrien learns to hone his powers and either repress or, if needed, direct them.

Finally. “Metallic Rouge” can be streamed in different platforms. Four days ago when it was announced, the rights were forfeited outside of Japan and other territories.
First off, it is a collaboration among Yuma Yamaguchi, Taisei Iwasaki and Towa Tei. The soundtrack contains 42 songs, less than two hours of music spanning different genres with one specific theme and a curious choice of classical rendition of Claude Debussy’s famous “Claire de Lune” (Moonlight), which we have seen Rouge’s “brother” Gene (Jean) Junghardt was playing on the piano on episode 3. Debussy was inspired by Paul Verlaine’s poem with the same title and set forth to create this piece to accompany it.
All sing in a minor key / Of victorious love and the opportune life, / They do not seem to believe in their happiness / And their song mingles with the moonlight…
I wonder if Iwasaki thought about it.

The soundtrack opens with the lounge/jazzy “Falling Starlight and Moonlight I.” This piece has different interpretations that you just have to choose which one you like.
I prefer Viola’s (Celeina Ann, artist) when she sang this piece in a club that opened the first episode. It was so elegant and seductive at the same time.

Then it followed with one of the best fight songs imho, “Crimson Lightning,” which is the overall theme of the series.

One of my favourites is “Escobilla,” a flamenco-esque track that encourages you to do some dancing. The guitar opener is somewhat reminiscent of “Trigun 1998’s” “Never could have been worse.” Must’ve been the guitar pickings.

As the soundtrack is manned by three people it is interesting to note that one can differentiate the style of each sound. Somehow I can identify Yuma Yamaguchi’s. Not because I love “Undead Girl Murder Farce” and I listened to it almost every day last year making it my most streamed album, but it is the familiarity that he imbues on his composition and that is not bad at all. They give off a certain mood, very atmospheric. “Red Madness I” is a techno/industrial music that already landed on my jogging list.

Taisei Iwasaki often delves towards the aesthetic of orchestra, the jazzy, the piano pieces, which he also utilized on “Belle” for example.
While the pieces Towa Tei (of Deee-lite fame) contributed, who has established himself as one of the pioneers in electronica/house music, will leave you out of this world.
Towa posted that this has been the fastest track he’s ever composed.

qala and the style over substance argument
so, i watched qala (dir. by anvita dutt) immediately when it came out - a story that exposed the music industry and the position of women in it, especially focusing on the toxic nature of indian classical music? it was like they made the film for me (someone who's spent a good chunk of their life trained in hindustani classical music). however, i was sorely disappointed.
in essence, qala, along with other films that did commercially well that came out in bollywood last year, solidified my understanding that the audience of today's generation of movie-watchers genuinely puts style over substance and in fact, uses it as a way to defend their favourite movies from criticism. the recent resurgence of praise for om shanti om of all films, only strengthened this opinion.
my criticisms for qala are in plenty, yet i will choose to expand on the ones that strike out the most to me, all of which range from the lightest to the harshest criticism:
the choice of music
the acting
the direction + writing
the handling of the serious issues that are the main theme of the film
before you read ahead, please know that there are spoilers.
in indian classical music, there are two distinct forms: hindustani (or, north indian) and carnatic (or south indian) music. each have their differences and similarities and even someone who hasn't trained can tell them apart upon listening. within hindustani music - which is the genre of music that qala learns from her mother - you have many different styles of singing, ranging from shastriya sangeet (classical form of singing) to laghu sangeet (semi-classical and sometimes, light music). of course, this categorization also has its roots in religion and caste. shastriya sangeet has forms of singing like dhrupad (the oldest form and a strictly devotional medium), khyal (the most common one, telling tales or speaking of human emotions), bhajan (also a devotional medium), etc.
laghu sangeet has forms of classical music like the thumri, a form of singing popularized and invented by courtesans. the lyrics were sensual, romantic and more explicit. of course, owing to these, they were looked down upon. even the british had a huge role in diminishing the status of indian women performers. the "other woman" concept was specifically one that they propagated and the rise of the "perfect housewife" phenomena began since the seventeenth century. the extreme effect of that? the courtesans lost out on their patrons and were forced into prostitution.
hence, that was the primary history behind qala's mother, urmila, shaming her into never being a performer, i.e, in a more derogatory term, a "singing girl". a courtesan, essentially. which is accurate, considering the film is set in the 1940s. if a girl was too "out there in the world", i.e, her achievements being publicised in newspapers or her getting recognition for her academics, her future marital prospects were ruined. and the "shame" that befell the family if she was learning music or dance was worse. a significant number of the prominent female musicians that emerged from this era of pre-independence to post-independence were unmarried. or they had many patrons and salacious rumours regarding their love life were in plenty. the film pakeezah (1972) explores such themes quite well. and the many renditions and retellings of devdas also serve as a good example of the stature of performing women.
however, it's the music itself where it goes wrong for me. the choice of songs as well as qala's singing (of course, all of qala's songs are sung by the amazing sireesha bhagavatula), is in a style all too similar to laghu singing. the years of egregious training, no matter how much her mother dismissed her, would've developed a voice which would've sounded a lot more like what a lot of classical singers would sound like, unless they were singing a lighter form of singing. and it isn't a matter of pitch or using falsetto. qala's mom is referred to as a master of qawallis, which is a sufi form of devotional singing (and comes well under hindustani music too). even the lyrics of qala's songs, while full of very obvious foreshadowing, do not match the overall orthodox classical upbringing that the film portrays.
while bhagavatula has an amazing voice well versed in classical music (especially since she sings bhajans so often), considering the time that qala was set in, you would've expected a sound similar to something along the lines of noor jehan or even roshan ara begum. instead, it sounds a lot like a mix of semi-classical instrumental with a more pop-based voice. which is easier for our generation to digest and consume, however, it comes at the cost of a sound which is very typical of the 50s-70s era of bollywood.
one that qala does right are the costumes. they do their job well. not the sets as much, which i will get into later. at some points, they are well in line with the rest of the era of the film, other times it just sticks out like a sore thumb. here's where the "symbolism" comes in.
one of the most jarring examples is the song qala sings at the first performance, a very light classical song just by the sound of the vocals. even the song jagan sings is very contemporary at its core. despite the characters having an allegedly strict, traditional schooling of music (jagan's voice is devoid of the typical heavy accent or dialects that those who are from underprivileged backgrounds tends to have), the songs at hand present a very modern take on qawallis, despite bollywood being a flourishing ground for many iconic qawallis. therefore, the compositions sometimes falter at some points specifically because of the vocal choices. choosing to do away with alaaps, especially in qala's part, less aakar and more bariki, are all signficant details that feel jarring to someone who's lived in the world of classical music as long as qala. otherwise, there are some signature sounds retained from the era that the film is set in.
and while still on the topic of singing, a very important issue that i find least addressed is the acting of it. despite there being little vocal variations in the compositions, the actors don't show that they are singing. and in the film specifically revolving around music, that's an extremely important detail that i find amiss. hardly opening the mouth, the movement of the lips, the posture as well as the hand gestures (yes, a very important detail!), are all obvious flaws. a recent film that does that does those details well is the disciple (2020). the first scene of urmila teaching qala singing displays urmila wearing an elaborate piece of nose jewellery that covers half of her mouth, and that's when they're doing rehyaas (practice), not a performance. it's huge details like these that don't sell the film to me.
the acting is quite underwhelming and here is where disagreements with my opinions might enter. i find trupti dimri's rendition of qala extremely, for lack of politer words, exasperating. she tends to show the same expressions for all of her problems, i.e., there is no great difference between her feeling anger or feeling despair or feeling depressed or feeling cheated or just plain exhaustion. qala's character is a complex one and difficult to act, which is a concession i will give, however, the hype around her is a little unnerving when the audience is given such an unremarkable delivery of dialogues and emotion. it comes off as school-play acting at times. swastika mukherjee, who plays urmila, is quite two-note with her acting, which sometimes suits her character and sometimes just feels very low-effort. babil khan has his moments, yet there is such less versatility. you'd think the babil of qala's hallucinations and the one who existed in real life would have some distinct characteristics (which they do), but they never come off as that. it feels so half-hearted at times.
the whole point of symbolism is that it's subtle at heart and not on the face. qala has on-the-face symbolism, which is an irony in itself. the black swan scene, the frosty room in the beginning, the ghostly jagan, etc. almost made me bump my nose into a wall. it comes off as pretentious at best, as if the viewer is stupid. it is also very off-putting in some scenes. for example, the black swan scene - there is very little buildup and it feels very predictable in the sense that "it all goes downhill from here". however, there is one scene which i like, which is the gargoyle one (a very traumatic scene, for those who recall, it is the one right before ghodey pe sawaar gets recorded for the final time). i think that is the most effective filmmaking in the entire film. the best thing about symbolism is always the subtlety. it makes the viewer keep coming back to pick up on something they might have missed in the first watch, it helps them pick up the pieces along the way instead of being able to tell the twists thirty minutes before they are revealed.
and one of the most egregious crimes of the entire film is the direction. here is where we get a little more technical (but just briefly, do not worry). the way it cuts from one scene to the next is like watching a poorly edited reel put out by the team of an out-of-touch marketing firm. the editing could have been better at many places. the writing falls flat specifically when it comes to the characters. i'm pretty sure on paper, the script must've been a delight to read. the story has so much potential - considering that it's based on two books, where there might've been even more depth given to the characters - it isn't new in any way but it offers a different, feminist perspective of the indian music industry. yet, the characters are paper thin on screen - in their ambitions, psychology and sociology. hence, urmila suddenly turning a new leaf in the last ten minutes of the film is something that feels wrong, because all along, she has been portrayed as a heartless mother. qala's actions make sense because her character has nearly always been rooted in self pity and rage. jagan is nothing without music. there is very little dimension to them apart from me summarizing their characters in one sentence with less than thirty words each.
that is why, the film feels even more half-hearted when it speaks of the issues that it centers around. all of these elements add up and make for a tiring watch. i gave qala a second chance, to be fair and omitted some of my pettier criticisms, yet the more serious ones remain. to a certain extent, it does aestheticize depression, which i have a huge issue with. however, baby steps as always with bollywood. it's no dear zindagi considering it is set in a different period with a different ending. however, the writing of the characters could've been so much better. a little more exploration of urmila's intentions would've given her so much depth. a few more interactions between qala and jagan might've given qala the chance to befriend him and not just see him a rival, thus intensifying the decision she took. the characters do not feel human, they are strictly white or black and qala being the anti-hero feels very off since it requires better writing and a stronger plot. and of course, much better acting.
however, qala re-opened up discussion of a nearly-always forgotten discourse - that of the position of women in music. and for achieving that bare minimum, i give it full credit. however, when there have been films with much better writing, characterization and cinematography in bollywood itself, with a similar theme, qala needs to be seen for what it contains than what it displays. just because it glitters, doesn't mean it's gold.

Chapter 15
November 1977
Elvis was back on the road performing his latest tour. This tour was thirty days spent out through six weeks so he could spend Thanksgiving and Christmas with his family. Elvis didn’t want this tour to be just a greatest hits tour. He wanted to give each audience something different and exciting to look forward to. He did the classics like “Love Me Tender,” “Jailhouse Rock,” and “Hound Dog.” He performed his own renditions of his favorite songs like Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.”
You and the kids weren’t able to be a part of the tour in early November due to school schedules and other various activities, but Elvis was adamant on having you and his family with him during the December leg of his tour. Every single night before and after his shows, Elvis would call you to make sure all five of his babies were alright. He talked to Mallory, Elvis Jr, and John separately for ten minutes each before the show because he knew they would be asleep by the second call. That second call was all for you and baby Kennedy. He would ask you about the most mundane things like the weather, but you loved that about him.
November 23, 1977
Before long Elvis was home from the November leg of his tour. He came straight home from his NYC show in order to get home quicker. When he walked into the house, he wasn’t surprised that all the Christmas decorations were already up. He knew you loved Christmas just as much as he did, so he was ok with you decorating early. It was nearly 1AM so he didn’t expect anyone to be up when he quietly walked up the stair to the master bedroom. He didn’t see you in bed, so he went to the nursery to see if you were there. Just as he suspected, you were in the rocking chair holding Kennedy, oblivious to the fact that your husband was in the doorway. It wasn’t until you looked up for a quick moment that you saw him. It nearly startled you seeing him in the doorway.
“I thought you were never gonna notice me, Satnin.” Elvis started walking into the nursery to get closer to you.
“What are you doing home so early? You told me that you weren’t gonna be home until Wednesday night.”
Elvis was in front of you knelt down so he could be eye level worth you. “(Y/N), technically it is Wednesday. And besides, I couldn’t wait any longer to see my babies.”
You gently kissed him right on the lips. The taste of cigars and Coca-Cola still lingered. “Well, you ain’t gonna hear me complain. Welcome home baby.” Just in that moment, Kennedy’s eyes shot wide open, like she knew her daddy was home. “I don’t think I’m the only one who missed you Elvis.” You gently placed Kennedy in his arms. His heart melted every single time he saw you or his babies.
“Well hello there little Kennedy. How’s my little princess? You’ve gotten so big since the last I saw you baby girl.”
You softly giggled to yourself. “Elvis, she hasn’t grown that much in two and half weeks.”
“Satnin I’m telling you now, she’s grown at at an inch or two. At least she’s finally got some hair bless her heart.” He was right on that. Her hair was just starting to grow and of course, it was dark just like it was with her older siblings.
“Okay, you’re right Mr. Presley. Now can you please let her sleep?”
“Alright princess your mama said it’s bedtime. I’ll see ya first thing when the sun rises. Daddy loves you Kennedy.” Elvis gently kissed Kennedy’s head and then put her into the crib. “Come on (Y/N), it’s your bedtime too.” He gently picked you up and carried you into the bedroom. You could hear his heart beating while he carried you. Elvis carefully laid you down on your side of the king size bed and tucked you in. He was careful not to turn on any lights while he changed into his pajamas. When he finally got into bed, he saw that you were almost asleep so he wrapped his arms around your waist in order to pull you closer to him.
“Good night Satnin. Sweet dreams my baby doll.” He kissed the top of your head several times and then both of you feel asleep.
November 30, 1977
Elvis was so excited about today because his whole family was coming with him on tour. The whole Presley household was excited. For first time ever, all four kids were going on tour with you and Elvis. It wasn’t going to be easy, but it was sure gonna be worth it in the end. Elvis helped get everyone loaded on the private jet plane, Hound Dog II. The plane was custom made for your family with plenty of space.
By the time everyone was loaded on the plane, you were worn out. You tried your best to hide the exhaustion, but Elvis could see it. He got the kids settled down and ready for take off and then, he tended to you. As soon as the plane took off in the air, Elvis walked back to the queen sized bed that was custom made for you and him to find you curled up in a ball, almost halfway asleep. He got on the bed which made you jump almost clean out of your skin.
“Shit Elvis, you nearly gave me a heart attack.”
“I didn’t mean to scare ya baby. Come here and let me take care of you Satnin.” He carefully pulled you into his lap and held you close to his chest. He started gently kissing your face and rubbing your head until you fell asleep. He kept saying sweet nothings into your ears while you sleeping. “I love you so much (Y/N). You’re always gonna be my queen. Sweet dreams Satnin. Elvis held you the entire plane ride so you could get some much deserved sleep.
In two hours time, you were almost to Chicago. Elvis started peppering your face with kisses to wake you up because knew you didn’t like to be startled when you were asleep. You slowly start to wake up and smile at the thought of still being in your husband’s arms. Elvis brushed your (Y/HC) hair away from your face so you see the Chicago skyline. You were in complete awe of the view.
After the plane landed, you and Elvis got the kids unloaded into the limousine and headed to the hotel for the night. Elvis softly tucked you and the kids into bed before getting himself into bed. This was the life he had always dreamed of. Sure, it was great being the King of Rock n Roll, but his whole world revolved around you and his babies. Elvis thanked God and his lucky stars every night that you had come into his life when you did, changing it for the better.
December 1, 1977
The day was already going a hundred miles a hour by the time the six of you left the hotel. He was already in his jumpsuit that you picked for him to wear that night, the blue swirl. You loved the way that jumpsuit brought out his blue eyes, even through the blue tinted sunglasses that he was wearing. Elvis loved it when his little family matched it so you did it every single chance you could. You and Mallory are matching in white bell bottom pants and blue blouses while baby Kennedy was in a baby blue long sleeve dress. Elvis Jr and John are in navy blue button up shirts and black slacks.
When you got to Chicago Stadium, you all were escorted by security and the Memphis Mafia to Elvis’ dressing room. Elvis was pacing around the room out of nerves. He had been doing this for twenty plus years and still questioned himself. What if he forgot the words? What if they didn’t like him?
“Babe, you’re gonna make track marks in the floor if you keep pacing around like that.”
“Satnin, I’m nervous as hell and you know that.”
“Now hun, you are not just any performer. You are Elvis fucking Presley. Every single time you go on that stage, lightning strikes. More importantly, you’re my husband Elvis. The father of my children. I love you so much baby. Now go out there and sing your heart baby. The kids and I will be out there watching you.”
“Alright (Y/N), I’ll be looking for my babies. Don’t get mad at me if I decide to surprise you night baby.”
“I expect nothing less from you Mr. Presley. I love you baby”
“I love you too Satnin.” Elvis took your face in his hands and kissed you right on the mouth. By the time he got done kissing you, your nude pink lipstick was all over his lips. He chuckled as he saw the lipstick on his lips. You and the kids were led out to the front row. The nervous energy of the crows was exciting for you.
The 2001 Space Odyssey started to play. Moments later, Elvis came out calm, cool, and collected. The crowd was electric and screaming for him. His performance was amazing like usual. About half way through the show, Jerry came out to get you and the kids. You were puzzled on why he was coming to get you because it was too soon. He didn’t say a word when he escorted to you and the kids to stage area. Elvis introduced the band and orchestra like he always did. After two more songs, he took a breather before he spoke to the crowd again.
“Ladies and gentleman, I’ve introduced you to my band, but there’s a few more people I wanna bring out. Daddy, come up here.” Vernon slowly came up the stairs and met Elvis. “This is my dad, Vernon.” The crowd applauded for him. After Vernon left the stage, Elvis began to speak again. “Now I wanna introduce you to the love of my life, (Y/N) Presley. Come on out here baby!” You were hesitant to come out, so he went over to you and took you by the hand so he could lead you out himself. “Now I don’t know why she’s actin’ all bashful, there’s no need for it she’s so beautiful. This woman right here has put with me for at least fifteen years, being married to me for eleven of those years.” You couldn’t hide the fact that you were blushing and Elvis chuckled to himself.
“I love you baby.” You tried to walk off the stage, but Elvis gently grabbed your hand. “Sorry baby, but you’re staying up here doll. Now I’d also like to introduce our beautiful children. Mallory! Elvis Jr! John! Come on out!” Your three older children came running to you and Elvis. The twinkle in their eyes was something to behold. They hugged both of you like they haven’t seen either one of you in a week even though they just saw you. Elvis looked at you and mouthed go get Kennedy to you. “Now ladies and gentlemen, as you all know we just welcomed another baby in August. Little miss Kennedy came a little early, but I’m happy to say that she’s alright. My wife’s getting her now.” You saw the tears in his eyes as he saw you holding baby Kennedy in your arms. “Here for her very first concert, Kennedy Grace Presley.”
While the whole audience was applauding, Elvis took the moment to softly coo to his littlest baby. “How’s my little baby girl right now? Are you being good for mama? Come here baby, daddy wants to show you off little darlin.” You handed Kennedy to your husband and then he proceeded to show her off. “Isn’t she beautiful people. She gets it all from her pretty little mama.” You chuckled and nudged him. You knew for a fact that Elvis was the most beautiful man alive and here he was calling you beautiful. He took any chance he could to embarrass you or show your whole family off.
“Thank you very much honey. Now kids go back with Uncle Jerry, I got one more surprise for your mama.” Jerry came out to get Kennedy and to lead the older children off the stage. You glared at your husband wondering what he had in store. “Come here (Y/N), there’s one more thing I have in store you baby.” You walked to him and he wrapped his left arm around you. You tell this man was forever in love with you. “This next song is for this beautiful woman right here. My wife, the mother of my children. My world. My rock. I’m ready whenever the band is.” The music began playing and you recognized the song immediately: How the Web was Woven. He knew you loved that song so much that he decided to surprise you with it. The tears began flowing from your eyes as he was singing to you. When the song ended, Elvis hugged you tight and whispered in your ear “I love you so much (Y/N) (Y/M/N) Presley. Don’t you ever forget it Satnin.” He gracefully walked you to the stairs and kissed you one more time. When we saw you had made it down the stairs, Elvis continued on with the show. When it came time for “Can’t Help Falling in Love” you and the kids were escorted out to the limo to wait for Elvis. Minutes later, Elvis came into the car with you and the babies. He loved on you and the kids.
“You did amazing tonight baby. I love you Elvis Aaron Presley.”
“I love you too Satnin. Now let’s get to the Hound Dog II and go to Indianapolis baby. I know you’ve always wanted to see Christmas lights in every state, including Hawaii so cross Indiana off the list.” This man knew you like the back of his hand. His main goal in life was making you happy and he was willing to do anything to do that.
