I’m about to vomit out a bunch of thoughts, and I’m not sure any of this is going to make sense by the end, but. I’ve been thinking a LOT about these three lines in RE4make:
“You haven’t changed. You just think you have.”
“You can’t save her. You can’t save anyone.”
“This time, it has to be different...”
I’ve seen people focus in on that Krauser line and tie it directly back to Sherry, which is cool! Even as recently as five years ago, people completely glossed over Sherry’s impact on Leon’s life, and it’s cool that the remakes have had people digging into his character and realizing “oh shit, literally everything that happens to him after RE2 is because of his paternal love for Sherry.”
But... Krauser’s line is about more than just her.
With the remake turning Krauser into Leon’s combat trainer, chances are he knows about everything that happened in Raccoon City. And I don’t mean, like. He read a government file. Leon probably told him.
In OG, Krauser and Leon have this exchange of dialogue:
Krauser: “What is it that you fight for, comrade?” Leon: “My past, I suppose.” Krauser: “Hmph. Umbrella.”
It was axed completely from the remake, because it doesn’t make sense for it to happen in the remake. If Krauser was Leon’s trainer, that question was probably asked very early in their relationship. And since they weren’t currently in a fight to the death, and because they weren’t already six years removed from Raccoon City, chances are, Leon’s answer was a bit more involved than just “my past.”
So, let’s back up a little bit. In RE2make, they basically turned Kendo into a completely different character. OG Kendo was literally just there to point a shotgun at Leon and/or Claire and then go “oh my bad you’re not a zombie” and hook them up with some guns before he gets eaten. In RE2make, he’s a desperate and terrified father just trying to spend his last few moments with his infected 6 or 7 year old daughter before she turns. After he shuts the door on Leon and Ada, Leon turns to Ada and says, “Protecting people like that is why I joined the force.”
But Leon doesn’t protect or save Kendo or his daughter. He doesn’t protect or save... anyone. Every single person that Leon comes into contact with and tries to save dies horrifically -- and some, he even has to kill, himself (Marvin Branaugh). The only people who make it out of Raccoon City alive are people who saved themselves (Claire and Ada).
Of course, there is Sherry. But Leon didn’t save Sherry; Claire did. ESPECIALLY in remake canon, since nearly all of Leon’s scenes with Sherry got severely shortened or removed completely in RE2make.
But then, when Claire entrusts Sherry to Leon’s care (on his own insistence, per her RE3 epilogue), he goes and fucks that up, too. Gets her kidnapped and held hostage indefinitely by the federal government, and the only thing he can do about it is do exactly as they say and just hope they keep their end of the bargain and not hurt her.
So, when Krauser says “You can’t save anyone,” he means anyone. Ever. And even up to that point in RE4... Leon got the two officers who drove him into town killed, and he watched Luis die a slow, agonizing death right in front of him. And then, past that point, Leon has to kill Krauser with his own hands. Then he watches Mike die.
Ashley is literally Leon’s first and only success story, up to this point in canon. (And even when you go all the way up to current-day canon, Ashley is one of... three? People? I can think of? Total? Who Leon actually saves?)
So, Leon saying, “This time, it has to be different,” he doesn’t just mean Sherry. He means Ada. He means Kendo. He means Marvin. He means the entirety of Raccoon City. He’s staring down a repeat of what happened back then, not in terms of the bioterror situation, but in terms of his own personal failures. His survivor’s guilt. He can’t handle the thought that he’ll be the only person to walk away again -- and he refuses to be.
And that’s why Ada’s line bothers me so fucking much.
I mean, first of all -- Ada, you haven’t seen this man in six years, and you’ve spent a total of like five minutes with him since meeting up with him again here, so how the fuck would you even know -- but even aside from that...
To be clear: she’s right.
But she’s also wrong.
Leon has changed -- to an extent. In RE2 (OG or remake), Leon honestly believed that if it was lawful, then it was also morally right. He doesn’t believe that anymore. There’s no more “letting the law sort it out” or trusting in the power of authority for him anymore. His moral compass has been boiled down to: “If you hurt or murder innocent people, you’re a fucking asshole, and I don’t really care who you are, I’ll kill you myself.”
RE2 Leon was willing to hear people out and give them an honest benefit of the doubt -- even Annette Birkin. RE4 Leon just tells people to shut the fuck up before opening fire.
RE2 Leon was honest and trusting to a fault, and he felt stronger as part of a team. RE4 Leon is suspicious almost to the point of paranoia, and he just wants to be left the fuck alone to do his job.
These are all things that were really important to who Leon was in Raccoon City, and they’re reasons why things turned out the way they did for him, back then.
But at the same time, Ada’s right in saying that, at the core of it all, Leon is still that kind-hearted, decent guy who just wants the good guys to win and the bad guys to lose. That’s why it hits him somewhere sensitive when Krauser says: “You can’t save anyone.”
It’s just that, now, the way he approaches it is different. His outlook on life in terms of his goals is different. His expectations for it have changed.
So, if Leon had been smarter/wittier, he absolutely could have turned it around on her and said: “No, I’ve definitely changed. You just think I haven’t.”
And not only would that sound threatening as fuck, he’d also be right. They both would be, at that point.
And for all of those major parts of him to have changed and still be facing down the possibility of failing every single person he comes across, especially Ashley...
"This time, it has to be different.”
And this time, it was.

Books I think the crows would enjoy:
Kaz: Frankenstein, One flew over the cuckoo's nest, The catcher in the Rye, The secret history, Crime and Punishment, No Longer Human, The silence of the lambs, Demon Copperhead, Eileen, Trainspotting, Hesse's and Cormac McCarthy's works, Antigone, Hamlet, The Stranger, Sherlock Holmes (when he was a child), Attack on Titan & Vinland Saga (manga)
Inej: The color purple, all of Toni Morrison's books, Pride and Prejudice, Little Women, Jane Eyre, Love in the Time of cholera, Mrs. Dalloway, The Bell Jar, a lot of Shakespeare's work, Antigone, Medea, White Nights, Wuthering Heights, Valley of the dolls, Play it as it lays, On earth we're briefly gorgeous, Sex and Rage
Wylan (he'd listen to audiobooks): Giovanni's Room, The picture of Dorian Gray, also the secret history, The great gatsby, The song of achilles, The Illiad, Shakespeare, Letters to a Young Poet, Demian, also Jane Austen's works and Wuthering Heights, Confession's of a Mask, Joan Didion's works
Jesper: That man doesn't read for shit nor does he have the patience to listen to most audiobooks but he'd like to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Harry Potter, definitely a lot of fantasy partly ya, On the Road and also The Great Gatsby.
Nina: Let's be honest she would probably read a lot of trashy romance novels or fun, lighthearted stuff, not that there's anything wrong with it she has endured enough. Would enjoy tropes like enemies to lovers, smut and ya. I have a feeling that she'd like Sarah J. Maas' stuff. I think she would also like Daisy Jones and the six and the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
Matthias: He doesn't care.
Feel free to leave suggestions.

The coolest gender thing in the 2009 Japanese video game persona 3 100% how hard they coded shinjiro as the dead mom
#.txt#i got soooo mad in the car driving home thinking about how his drug addiction is essentially the classic anime heart condition.#in that the only side effect of the suppressants is that they will kill him. like?#i realized for the longest time i had assumed the chest pain and sweating came from the drugs but thats. castor. obviously.#it doesnt affect his mood or his awareness its like a mood stabilizer pain relief pill?#its so odd that hes framed as like. being addicted to illegal street drugs. BY THE NARRATIVE.#when its more like hes on the most insane experimental medication that they wont even test on like. rats.#also im not fact checking any of this before posting. so i might be lying about things.#idk if it was all of strega that had trouble controlling their personas but like. chidori was because of the Experimentation.#and shinjis just like. mentally ill coded. in a bad way 😭#The inability to regulate a mood/stimuli to the point where he can be unsafe to himself or others.#broad ass symptom of disorders that are not treated well. its also interesting that its not brought on by a specific event.#like the childhood fire is there. but you have akihiko right there to directly compare it to. and hes arguably more effected by it all.#and he seems to be coping well 10+ years on like some coping mechanisms are kind of weird (protein) but nothing super out of the ordinary.#so the problem is really the october 4th incident which was just a pure honest to god accident.#the fact that it gets covered up as a car accident does feel like the best like. emotional equivalent.#because it being shinji being unable to control his persona his true representation of himself and it resulting in death is sooooo bleak#and it weighs on him for 2+ years of being suicidal and unhoused until finally he goes through with his suicide by martyrdom.#i lost the plot a little bit on the gender situation with the vague allusions to fraility when story convenient#acting as dorm den mother and cooking and sewing long hair jacket sillhouette reading like a dress#was referring to that before mental illness took over. woman under the influencing this anime boy.#long way of saying i think he should have a over the shoulder ponytail when hes older. and he should have a mood disorder.

21 pages into Emily Wilson’s introduction to her translation of The Iliad and already feeling absolutely stripped raw and entirely gutted.
I love how you can genuinely feel how much love and dedication went into the process of translating this beautiful piece of literature. I’ve been looking forward to reading for so long and when a friend gifted me the book over Christmas I was dead set on it being my first read of the new year.
I’ve got her translation of the Odyssey lined up for number two 🫡

The point of A Christmas Carol was not to teach morals by example; it was to teach morals directly. Ebenezer Scrooge was specifically made to be a reader insert. The lessons of A Xmas Carol can mostly be divided into 'you don't want to be this guy (he's suffering)' and 'you don't want to be this guy (he's evil, like ultimately, Biblically, very un-Xtian)', afforded by the third category of Basically Everything In The Book 'you don't want to be this guy anymore (he's deeply relatable to the upper-class Victorians the book is targeted at)'. The fact that he doesn't spend money on himself is not a sign that he needs to care for himself more; it's to show that he's so greedy to the point that it is useless, to show that valuing money this much is bad and senseless. The fact that he were to die if he didn't change for the better is an example of Cosmic punishment. Maybe the story does have a hint of teaching Scrooge to take care of himself, but that's only for the same reason that Scrooge is given a 'workaholic billionaire' backstory. The rich like(d) to see themselves as hard-working, and were the target audience, and Dickens didn't want to insult his target audience while trying to teach them basic human decency. So he also took the opportunity to slot that into the 'you don't want to be this guy (he's suffering)' method of teaching.
#that post just frustrates me so i decided to write out my thoughts#ebenezer scrooge is a reader insert!!#a christmas carol#also charles dickens' mindset at the time of writing is fascinating to think about. a xmas carol was written in response to a government#report on the conditions of mines factories and mills for child labourers (which before writing charles dickens also conducted his own#investigation i think). dickens vowed he would deliver a 'sledge-hammer's blow on behalf of the Poor Man's child'#and xmas carol is... not that. from a 2023 perspective it feels really toothless actually. it's about a guy who learns about the magic of#xmas and being nice to poor people. but thats because it's not MEANT to be a sledge-hammer's blow clearly. he reconsidered#and wrote a persuasive letter and it's actually really interesting to pick apart! so there's my recommendation#and regarding accusations of antisemitism: dickens probably was really i havent really read many of his works outside of school so.#but the book is pretty (n yes pretty is doing a lot of legwork here) divorced from that. its antisemitic but thats mostly#because it uses classical Xtian models of morality (eg celebrating xmas) to equate not celebrating xmas to cruelty to show how bad cruelty#is. not to equate cruelty to non-xtianity to show how bad non-xtianity is. yes theres some fucked use of carciature but the antisemitism#i read as very casual? like nowadays. its hooked nose = evil. antisemitism was absolutely not the intent at all its just very much an#artifact of its time. which. i dont think anyones learning nazism from ACC. its not challenging antisemitism but. most books dont even now#sweet talkin'#long tags#sweet whisperin'#charles dickens#classism

gonna sound stupid for a moment let me have this ive been listening to the clash i never got into them really despite having a huge punk and hardcore phase and as a result a phase of like the bands that inspired them. like OG punks New york dolls ramones and later sex pistols who are more punk sounding comparatively (even tho johnny rotten wouldnt agree. he sucks i dont want to agreee with him). early white kid ska punk Op Ivy and then thatd lead me to minor threat black flag fugazi then like post punk emo stuff that kinda stuff ANYWAY what im saying the clash is right up my alley and i jusr kinda skipped over them so im going back and what i think is so cool about art is releasing stuff that is derivative of what YOU enjoy but it has your own flare to it (consciously or not, through the lens of a different time than your influence was released and with the considerations and influences of pop/counter cultural etc) and even if its not successful now it may speak to people in yhe future who expand upon the sounds or ideas of your work and from there it becomes a genre with a name. like the clash was british punk rock OGs but their music kinda sounds like ska. which wasnt really a popular genre with a name back then it only became so because bands like Op Ivy (and other cool ones) were influenced by the clash anD MORE. ska & the clash are just an example i thjnk its cool with a lot of genres anyway it reminds me of when you used to have a really good socratic where everyone contributed their little thoughts and then the whole group walked away with a much larger fleshed out thesis i just think its so lovely we’re all sharing

Working some more on this Weird Little Guy (Patreon)
#Doodles#The weird little guy is me#Much closer now! Nearly complete! Just one more push#I actually did the entire design iteration process in one sprint and it was really fun :D#So these are very close! But there's still a few details to get right in the next set >:3c See if you can guess them before they appear!#I think the rattails were really the biggest and best addition - darkening and adding opacity to the inner hem of the fabric is good but ♪#The hair! Oh and the Center lol finally decided on a nice simple design :) I'll go into it more in the next one but it's a pink-drip heart!#Since they're at least partially Fallen but still an Angel I don't think I'll be following the AGE lore that closely#Just something unique to all the established angels haha#Not cleaning the guidelines was really hard haha I was like ''But...but I could! I could do it!'' No that defeats the purpose lol#Gotta do the classic over-the-shoulder kicky feet pose! Did the same with Celestrians it's a good pose!#I'm just glad they're finally at a point where the details are Enough that it's fun but not So Much that it's hard to keep track of#I'm pleased :) Balanced ♪#The goop panel lol >:3c#I mentioned in the first one thinking along the lines of Charm and [Purple Text] but I didn't want to just make Geode again - distinct#But I love the ink/candle gloops! Same with Sky and Hiraeth's angel forms! And Hiraeth's god form! It's just fun shapes!#So I was thinking of making the goop a conditional form for High Emotions - positive or negative causes melting haha#It reflects their Center :) It's just an extension of the base of self#Also did some testing with different feathered tails - I like the peacock one but it might be a bit busy haha#The little tail is cute but I don't like it at all lol#And the bird legs were definitely too much! Haha but they were fun to test out ♪ That's what concept art is for :D

CARLYYYY what if it’s a situation where lucy is in the building with the fire/shooting/danger or whatever and tim is worried so he goes in to try and help her but she gets out on her own and just misses him and then when grey tells her he went in for her that’s why she looks so heartbroken in that one promo pic because he gets put in danger 😭
ABBYYYY i wanna kiss you on the mouth, but i could also throttle you right now cause WHAT THE HELL !!!!!!
oh my god, but what if she didn't actually get out before tim stepped in??? and that promo pic of her lying in shattered glass is her watching tim getting his ass beat, or the shooter(s) pointing a gun to his head and we get a parallel of tangled, where lucy just starts begging and pleading with them not to kill tim. that they can do whatever they want with her as long as they stop hurting him.
